I love the ancient tribal look and noticed now that it is more upper body work, while the classical cabaret style is more hip and leg. Thanks for the comparison.
I LOVE Egyptian or Cabaret belly dancing personally. I love the Egyptian culture and feel more connection with this kind of style even though i listen to Metal music lol. Also, i feel like i can do more movements and be more creative and graceful with Egyptian/Cabaret style. :)
As danced in this video, the nightclub style probably can be called "pop" - but I doubt if it is a good representation of the style. You definitely get many dancers with rock star personalities who display passion and technique. While Tribal (as originally conceived) is about the beat, traditional belly dance is about the whole of the music so you get a more nuanced approach as the dancer switches between beat, melody and shape of the music according to his or her interpretation on the day. This is why I prefer traditional belly dance.
I've been watching tribal and I enjoyed it despite it being gloomy sometimes, well, most of the time. After this video I looked at cabaret style and WOW, is that cheery! The dancers actually smile! Which really is more of a big deal than you'd think. Thanks for this video!
This is super fun! I love both styles. I love the dark, bohemian beauty of Tribal, and the joyful, feminine grace of Cabaret. What a good comparison if the two.
Andrea, so interesting! A main difference between tribal and cabaret has been that in it's initial stages, tribal was "of the tribe" which means it was always done in a group with the leader cueing. Cabaret is mostly a solo dance. Cabaret incorporates much more intricate movements than mentioned here because the classical songs especially are much more complex. Tribal was easier to teach because of the simpler movement vocabulary and also because you can perform on stage quicker through the group security. P.S. The word for tribal hand moves is mispelled. It is "floreo" which comes from the Spanish flamenco meaning "flower". Also the word "taxim" is also got a typo. Taxim or takasim or taqsim is more correct. ;-)
This was fun to watch! You make all the dance styles look easy (which I know they're not.) Costumes are nice, too. Well done. I like both. I suppose my mood in the moment of watching/dancing would dictate which I prefer... Right now I can't decide on a preferred style.
Cabaret is definitely better! It's actually authentic belly dance. Tribal is a made up American version. ATS means American tribal style. I'm so sick of Americans taking something beautiful from another country's culture bastardizing it! We only started calling authentic belly dance cabaret bc ppl had to have something to call it to make sure ppl know it's not tribal. Cabaret is better in every way! The dance itself, costumes, the feel of it. It's happier more celebratory & beautiful! Tribal performances are too long & so boring that they lose the audience most of the time .... they make ppl wanna to end it all!!!! Btw, I am American in case ur wondering ;)
Looks like Tribal is in the lead. It is 3 votes for Tribal, 1 vote for Cabaret, and 1 fun vote for the Jazz number in the video. Thanks for your votes :)
For me the difference is tribal is about control or at least tribal fusion is(as in the movements) and cabaret or oriental is more about letting go, (or at least that is what a good dancer will do)
The term "cabaret" is a bit of a put down. Where the dance comes from "cabarets" are dives and "cabaret dancers" just a step up from prostitutes - often in skin tight mini-skirts. Over there quality nightclub dance it is called "(danse) orientale". Sticking to English probably "Nightclub" style would be a better term. And of course not all non-tribal is "nightclub"; there's beledi and folk as well. Plus there is a huge variation within the nightclub styles.
Its that Anatolia? They're arms are amazing, beside the fact that they are just incredible. I cannot seem to get graceful hands down, I'm from a tech trick end instead of graceful dancer end & trying to make the most dramatic effect possible is so hard. Great vid, best~
Many thanks, No it isn't Anatolia. I assume she is a wonderful dancer Anatolia? I will have to look her up. It is great you have the technique down sometimes the graceful part of it takes a little time. I am sure you are on your way!
Andrea de la Torre so sorry I confused you for her, you 2 look similar & are both amazing dancers! Yeah she does fire fan tutorials her channel is anatoliaparties. Love you're videos & style!
Great question, belly dance has many categorizations. I am using Tribal and Cabaret as a general title to encompass as much as possible. Correct, in this case I am encompassing Turkish/Egyptian under cabaret. Enjoy your day!
there are many styles: classical Egyptian (raks sharki) cabaret-bellydance, shaabi (popular arab music), folklore, American Tribal Style (ATS) , tribal fusion, indian fusion, etc.
I grew up doing jazz and ballet but favored jazz over ballet, I love both these styles but definitely feel partial toward the tribal. Can you tell me what music you played at the 5:10 mark? I love the sound, but I'm new to belly dance I wouldn't even know what genre to look for in music. Thank you!
Hi Glitter Kitten, That is awesome that you grew up doing jazz and ballet. A really good dance base to help you with any dance form. The music in the video is just music from the video editing software that one can use without worrying about royalty fees. Here are a couple of good Tribal Music suggestions. 1) Beat Antique - a group mainly Tribal Fusion Bellydance music. 2) Gypsy Caravan - a group more traditional Tribal Belly dance music feel. Have an amazing day!

As stated here, Tribal is more analogous to rock & roll and the classic stuff as Wagner and the like. "Mystique" and "fire" would be two buzzwords. For me "Cabaret" is not a fair term for the belly dance style when done from a girlish, princess-like mindset. It's suitable for popsters, and optimistic people. Given its sweetness, "cuteness" and "delicacy" are the words.
Both is hard decide both are amazing and have different speed if you pay attention to the dancers and take your time to look at it and img . Trible is slow speed and amazing great for sexy dancing while caribel dancing is medium speed is great for dancing at a party or something similar but like I said both are amazing and dancers are both beautiful . I'm a metal freak and my husband and I love the movement of belly dancing I am not that great at it but I been inspired and wanted to learn since I was 12 but since I'm having to vote and choose I'd say tribal is because when married or like that you'd want not to rush and take slow speed as your dancing for your spouse . I listen to alot of dark metal music that can sound like a tribal instrument sound . Caribel dancing is very great with dancing to like a party and med speed music like they said think pop music your dancing to have fun and sexy etc but your speed is a little more fast but not extreme . My opinion not to go speed constantly is because it will give you out faster before it'd do if you go slow like in the tribel dance . For longer performance both of you are beautiful and amazing .
Thank You so much for all of your videos :) What is the name of the song/ instrumental that is played during the Snake arm segment as well as at the closing of the video? I've been working on fluidity- especially with snake arms (You're tutorial on that is awesome by the way!) - I notice I always have lots of tension in my traps and shoulder area. I spend lots of time performing deep stretching exercises etc., but I still tend to get stiff sometimes during practicing. As a result, I will take frequent breaks to stretch and loosen up. Is that normal for dancers?
Thank you Chenoa for the positive feedback :)!! To answer your music question my Adobe Elements video editing software comes with different music and this one is under the Music Score - Atmospheric and is called New York Night. Here are some thoughts about the tension in your traps and shoulder area. Are you focusing so much on your movement that you are forgetting to breath and relax the upper body when you are practicing. Could you be over stretching and not giving the muscle enough time to recover and so the traps stiffen up because they are soar. Sometimes it can take a while to build up strength in your arms and shoulders to hold them up for a long time. Are you under a little or lots of stress at work or daily life. The traps are one of the first to tighten up when under stress. Make sure to have proper posture when doing the moves. When doing the movements switch directions to even things out. I know my arms get tired after holding them up for a long time. Be sure to listen to your body and it sound like you are doing a great job spending time on your stretching exercises etc.
Thanks for the info!! Yeah, it is most likely a breathing issue. When focusing too much on executing a movement properly, the breathing becomes dysfunctional; holding the breath without realizing it. No good. I just have to be a little more aware. Thanks again Andrea, you're awesome! :-)
No mention of folkloric here. Not all of us are cab girls. I don't see much creativity in tribal. The limited number of moves make all the dances look the same, there doesn't seem to be any change of dance interpretation from song to song in group performaces. There might be something I am missing in on when I watch that dance style. I do like fusion more than tribal.
I love the ancient tribal look and noticed now that it is more upper body work, while the classical cabaret style is more hip and leg. Thanks for the comparison.
I love both styles but love Tribal more because I'm drawn to how earthly and mysterious it is
Cabaret seems more airy and flirty. Tribal more intense and serious.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Lee :) I agree!
I love cabaret styled belly dance the best, because it makes me feel like a princess.
Pretty!
They are both beautiful! Why choose? We can have both!
Great comment!
I LOVE Egyptian or Cabaret belly dancing personally. I love the Egyptian culture and feel more connection with this kind of style even though i listen to Metal music lol. Also, i feel like i can do more movements and be more creative and graceful with Egyptian/Cabaret style. :)

I love both! I've only ever done cabaret, but I'm looking into trying Tribal soon. :)
Tribal, hands down. It’s so much more beautiful and sensual...mesmerizing. Cabaret is the Pepsi to tribals Coca Cola
Awesome Pepsi and Coca Cola comparison. Thanks for sharing!
I would have to vote for tribal. :)
Thanks for your vote :)
I've been watching tribal and I enjoyed it despite it being gloomy sometimes, well, most of the time. After this video I looked at cabaret style and WOW, is that cheery!
The dancers actually smile! Which really is more of a big deal than you'd think. Thanks for this video!
Tribal for me. It's the strong movements and dark costumes that do it for me.
I like them both but would vote for Cabaret. Tribal is a little depressing and cabaret seems more joyful
Thanks for your vote and sharing your thoughts about them :)
Tribal yes
Tribal is the one I most enjoy!
Tribal💥
This is super fun! I love both styles. I love the dark, bohemian beauty of Tribal, and the joyful, feminine grace of Cabaret. What a good comparison if the two.
Thanks for your wonderful comments Christiana :)
I have spent months studying how to belly dance and found an awesome resource at gabs mover crusher (check it out on google)
You're great! You dance much like me. I danced cabaret in my career. After breaking my pelvis, I do ballet for exercise and tribal for fun. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this video! I now understand the difference between the two. I personally LOVE the tribal style
Good to hear :) Thanks for your vote & have an amazing day!
I'm saying yes to the jazz dance outfit🙌🙌🙌🙌
Yeah Its a fun costume :)

Thank you for helping me decide what to learn. I'm going with cabaret.
So glad it helps! Thanks for sharing your comment :)

Hi Leonel, This song is called Middle East and it comes with the video editing software I use Adobe Premiere Elements 13.
