It is all about self-control, I lived many years in Asia, 4 in Thailand and many guys in their countries don't get women and then they think that in Thai they suddenly become handsome and develop great personalities and get overwhelmed and trapped, then when they look back they have no money, no women, no friends, and regretting a lot of poop they did.
A good rule of thumb seems to be about $1800 USD a month to live a good life there for the average person. This doesn't mean partying every night or supporting a 21-year-old super-hot girlfriend. Keep in mind if you can't get a 10 in your home country and you think your moving there and you're going to get one. You can, but you're going to pay, and a lot. the 1800 is for living in a nice place, partying 2-3 nights a week, and maybe getting a girlfriend once a week. I personally wouldn't move there without at least 2 years' worth of living expenses in a savings account for emergencies and a source of income that was over $1800/month. You should be saving some money while living there to keep up with inflation and to cover trips, and other expenses that come up that are unexpected.
The main thing is having medical insurance, you never know what is going to happen. I have seen so many foreigners also getting in motorbike accidents, and going to the hospital.
A little steep for me but nothing wrong with having more to spend if needed. Im in the 1500 range myself can do alittle more if needed but dont want to spend more if I can help it.

After several years I got to thinking about my retirement. About 1997 the Thai economy crashed. I was offered a high paying job in Southern California which I accepted. I remember sitting in the big bird on the runway thinking that I may never see Thailand again. I was excited about making the big move to the land of great weather and beach bunnies. I soon learned why I had a high paying job. The cost of living was sobering. I had found a pretty nice apartment not far from the factory. The apartment had a laundry on the premises. I was washing my clothes and a very attractive woman walked in to do her laundry. Of course we got into a conversation. We were both divorced and we got to talking about what we missed about our marriages. The conversation went downhill quickly from there. She was a feminist and she told me her ex husband did his own cooking and laundry. I pretty well ended the conversation by telling her that I knew for sure why she was divorced. She never spoke to me again. It didn't take me long to really hate California and the culture. All I could think about was how great Thailand had been. I quickly decided that as soon as I could afford to retire, I would be headed back to Thailand. I lived very frugally and saved every penny possible. After five LONG years, I was financially able to retire. I had planned my retirement carefully so money has never been a problem. I have a comfortable surplus from my pensions every month plus a nest egg for any emergency that I have never had. I have never looked back and have no regrets. I have NEVER even considered going back to the US. After my parents both passed away, I have never been back for a visit. I am now an old man at 79 years old and have been married to a Thai lady for 23 years. She told me that she is now too old to train a new husband so she will keep me. LOL.

Great video. Thanks. I've visited Thailand and The Philippines a few times recently. I'd recommend someone thinking about living anywhere in the world. Definitely go there for a month to try it out before you burn your bridges. Always have the ability and a plan to return. Know. Like changing your career. It's going to be a culture shock. And your ability to adapt and compromise is vital. Lastly. Holidays are different to living there. I've been on some great holidays in my home country Australia. But there's places even here I wouldn't be happy living in.

I used to work away from home for many months at a time and found that homesickness, at its worst, was after a big night out and being hungover! If your prepared for it you can tell yourself it’s only because of the hangover and you will feel much better about where you are the next day!

My housing village in Pakkret, Nonthaburi is located next to ISB (International School Bangkok) which was relocated to Pakkret, north of Bangkok from Sukhumvit Rd about 4 decades ago. ISB is arguably the most expensive/prestigious and one of the oldest international school in Thailand. It is about 5 km away from Muang Thong Thani's convention center, the largest of such in Thailand. This center holds major exhibition events especially auto shows twice a year in April and December.

Yes, when I visited Bangkok 10 years ago the heat stepping off the plane struck me like a hammer. But what really killed me was the humidity. It pulled down my entire system, my motivation, everything. I only wanted to stay inside with AC. I also have Asthma and breathing definitely felt more difficult. If you are healthy and 30 and not a heavy sweater this is a fine place to be. I will go there once more for holiday and decide. Unfortunately my favourite place for retirement - Vietnam - isn't any better.
Words of wisdom coming from you. I think people are getting caught up by the Pattaya night life videos that other people post. It gets a persons mind all wound up, and one wants to go there to experience that night life. But in time there is only so much you can do if you go that way. I eventually watch the same person's with their videos just walking around the same night life streets, and they don't go anywhere else. I really don't think they are there to stay, and it's a long way too go just to go a massage parlour, or connect with a lady of night. but then, maybe some guys are only into Asian women. You offer good advice if a person tries to move to Thailand. Don't even consider opening a business there, one has to know a Thai person who will be a stakeholder in your company, and they get 51% business right off the top. Like you say, do your research.

I retired from the US Department of Health and Human Services as a senior manager and we kept track of the ratings for each country on a national basis and not on a state basis. To correct my earlier statement, the US health care rating for 2023 is 15th. Taiwan is rated number 1 and South Korea is number 2. The US was rated 22 about 5 years ago
If your money is not straight, if your wealth level or your income level is not straight, don't go living anywhere abroad and far and away from family and friends. If you are NOT making $3,000 US and above , I don't recommend you go anywhere to live abroad if your intent is to be paying for play on a constant basis or if you are out partying. Investing with steady returns or placing $500 - $1,000 US in savings every month is important part of your budget. Emergencies can happen. Change of plans can happen. Don't go abroad to party or be paying for play if you are broke or if you are weak financially and living with no wiggle room, no space for any $$ errors.
In terms of government and banks not being as organised. I actually prefer their system of being a bit looser, there's so many jobsworths back home who worship the rules and love saying no. It's nice here that people are more flexible with the rules
You can still drink folks but partying maybe a different scenario, I could drink every night (on the 1000 a month limit granted it’s 7/11 or Thai food everyday) couple beers you’ll be ok few game of pool etc etc, but 1 wild night out can empty out your account and fuck you up for the rest of her month
Thailand is just super over priced and nothing close to what it was before. Vietnam is the new Thailand. Considering to leave after 12 years too, my budget isn't even the issue, I just don't wanna pay for low quality and service anymore. Plenty of countries offer much more or the same with better. Feel sorry for those unaware of this in the first place aka the 'newbies'. He also forgets the most important part: Thailand starts taxing us from 2024 if staying here 180 days or more, and it's a expensive country for taxes. Even you pay back home, if that is less than it would be here, you still pay the difference here too. And you get nothing in return.
I though the people in Vietnam are quite a bit less friendly then the Thai. That would be a factor for me, although the costs indeed seem lower. Are the rents in Vietnam significantly lower too btw?
Too many young men from Europe love it when they go and party and meet women but its very different once they live there. Its less boring than norway, sweden, Netherlands etc. Language is a big barrier

I got back home a month ago after 4 weeks in Thailand. What got me was the heat and humidity. Walking 3 blocks had my shirt was completely soaked. Otherwise, it was a practical place for me to move to.

Feel I should do well being a home body but I will get out more and explore over there since its worth it. Planned a realistic budget and have the funds to last 4-5 years then I will start my benefits. One of the most difficult is becoming paranoid - imagining that Thai speakers are ganging up on you and making negative things happen. I have seen this in the UK with a Vietnamese guy, Thailand and Vietnam. The solution to this is to have a lot of meaningful chats with someone you really trust. The problem though is where do you find this person!
You talk about staying legal, but thats a huge issue for most under 50 years. If you are not married, not working in the country, no Thai kids and not over 50 years, there are very little options to choose from. LTR or Elite will be your only options to LIVE here. Sure you can do some EDs, border/visa runs, but after that you are screwed and out of options.

I think there is alot of western food 🍲 in pattaya and other tourist spots go to the Philippines 🇵🇭 and you will find badly prepared western food and the local foods are not the best Thailand has a better reputation for foodies than the Phillipines for sure😮 !
Same as private schools in your country. Google the price by international schools in Thailand ( so many and public schools also have international programs, take to company that help about visa).

To ease the blow Im thinking of doing the 65k per month until I get to 800k switch and just leave that in the Thai bank. Of course you need more over the 65k per month to live on just plan on that, just saying if you dont want to lock up that 800k at first.
I've been there in 2014 for almost 2 months, i confirm everything you talking about is correct .. i spent $2100 including rent of small studio type which costs $800 . So with $1300 i enjoyed alot only in bangkok . maybe 10 times disco , only beer , other night just walking in malls or tourist area , no fancy restaurant . Didn't travel to any island . Almost no taxi Only use subway , you absolutely correct about job there is no job for Foreigner unless it's related to club . In general it depends of how spending money . But i never seen any country with this positive energy, the final advice , this country is good for sociable person , every fun is base in begin social in thailand to finding new friends even every single day . If you are not this type of person so you dont enjoy that much . In one word just get drunk and enjoy this is thailand mean
Sadly, I had been looking to Thailand, but recent videos talking about the new tax regulations that basically allow a foreigner to get taxed twice (by their home country, and Thailand), difficulties getting permanent visas, and the fact that several industries there are protected for Thais, its looking less and less likely.
My advice, don't take legal advice from RUclips. Especially in Thailand when it comes to visas and taxes. The chances of you getting taxed in the first place are low, let alone being double taxed. A lot of industries are protected for Thais, but most of them are "entry level" type jobs. If you have a set of skills you're more than likely be able to get hired somewhere. You'd live very well amywhere in Thailand on that budget. It's the Visas that make it hard to stay in Thailand. Look into Elite Visa if you aren't 50 years old or married to a Thai National
bah it's easy to get a job in Thailand if you are qualified, the problem is you will be overworked because they need to pay you higher than others so you will be expected to work very hard and for comparably little money to the west (1000 dollars a month which is unacceptable if you come from a developed country). So, if you plan to come here and work it's all wrong unless you are a digital nomad making way more than that stay home, work and retire in Thailand later.
Most Caucasian foreigners either move to Bangkok, Pattaya or Pai. Pai because it's 70-80% European living there which out number the local workers. It's kind of sad moving to a new country just to feel like your back home instead of going there to learn the culture of that country.
From my understanding it is far from being so black and white. Lots of variables. And also I wouldn't expect to need to worry about it next year, possible 2025. Regardless of your budget, Thailand will most likely extract all of it faster than you can imagine. If you want to be a millionaire in Thailand bring 10 million and if you're smart leave with 1. It can work, but you may want to spend at least a year there before deciding. Do not buy anything in that year apart from maybe your motorbike. Rent everything. and I mean EVERYTHING, na? Do not, under any circumstances, invest or commit to any long term financial burdens, women are at the absolute top of that list, are we clear? Do not end up a statistic, it's too easy to go down that dumb road. I'm your age and f@cked that up twice in my decades there. Be very careful or you will be broke quicker than you could imagine. Give it the full year, be diligent with this. Ask any of us who have spent many years there, go slow. You may find that after that year that Thailand is not the place for you. If you've already "bought in" and are building a new home for your new "love" up in Issan... you botched the sequence already and are screwed. Phom poot gkwam jing na la kraap. Khop Phom.
Good advice. In a culture built on human respect, you'd be wise to act the same. You are a GUEST in this country (or any other country foreign to you) You dont have to be there but if you do, know that every country has its rules & social mores. That's £1.5k a month. Many expats have quite a nice lifestyle on £1k, in a country where many basic needs are much cheaper than back home.

I retired from the US Department of Health and Human Services as a senior manager and we kept track of the ratings for each country on a national basis and not on a state basis. To correct my earlier statement, the US health care rating for 2023 is 15th. Taiwan is rated number 1 and South Korea is number 2. The US was rated 22 about 5 years ago
If your money is not straight, if your wealth level or your income level is not straight, don't go living anywhere abroad and far and away from family and friends.
If you are NOT making $3,000 US and above , I don't recommend you go anywhere to live abroad if your intent is to be paying for play on a constant basis or if you are out partying.
Investing with steady returns or placing $500 - $1,000 US in savings every month is important part of your budget. Emergencies can happen. Change of plans can happen.
Don't go abroad to party or be paying for play if you are broke or if you are weak financially and living with no wiggle room, no space for any $$ errors.
Having budget is critical. Also a good idea to have a little more cash cushion for emergencies.
In terms of government and banks not being as organised. I actually prefer their system of being a bit looser, there's so many jobsworths back home who worship the rules and love saying no.

Thailand is just super over priced and nothing close to what it was before. Vietnam is the new Thailand. Considering to leave after 12 years too, my budget isn't even the issue, I just don't wanna pay for low quality and service anymore. Plenty of countries offer much more or the same with better. Feel sorry for those unaware of this in the first place aka the 'newbies'.
He also forgets the most important part: Thailand starts taxing us from 2024 if staying here 180 days or more, and it's a expensive country for taxes. Even you pay back home, if that is less than it would be here, you still pay the difference here too. And you get nothing in return.

I got back home a month ago after 4 weeks in Thailand. What got me was the heat and humidity. Walking 3 blocks had my shirt was completely soaked. Otherwise, it was a practical place for me to move to.

Feel I should do well being a home body but I will get out more and explore over there since its worth it. Planned a realistic budget and have the funds to last 4-5 years then I will start my benefits. To me its a matter of future survival not partying my benefits will allow a decent life over there or similar place while here in the US I will be in deep sh@t All good advice common sense stuff.
One of the most difficult is becoming paranoid - imagining that Thai speakers are ganging up on you and making negative things happen. I have seen this in the UK with a Vietnamese guy, Thailand and Vietnam. The solution to this is to have a lot of meaningful chats with someone you really trust. The problem though is where do you find this person!

You talk about staying legal, but thats a huge issue for most under 50 years.
If you are not married, not working in the country, no Thai kids and not over 50 years, there are very little options to choose from.
LTR or Elite will be your only options to LIVE here. Sure you can do some EDs, border/visa runs, but after that you are screwed and out of options.

I think there is alot of western food 🍲 in pattaya and other tourist spots go to the Philippines 🇵🇭 and you will find badly prepared western food and the local foods are not the best Thailand has a better reputation for foodies than the Phillipines for sure😮 !

I have a question. Ok, so the retirement visa is 800,000 baht. But it can also include your annual income. So if your annual pension is 500,000 baht, does that mean the retirement visa would cost 300,000 baht?
800k baht deposit in Thai bank account or 65k baht per month income required for retirement visa.
The requirement is 800K baht OR 60k baht/month. Subject to judgement of the visa official who could at their discretion require both.
There are ways round the 800K bank deposit if you get an agent to go and do the retirement visa on your behalf.

To ease the blow Im thinking of doing the 65k per month until I get to 800k switch and just leave that in the Thai bank. Of course you need more over the 65k per month to live on just plan on that, just saying if you dont want to lock up that 800k at first.
I've been there in 2014 for almost 2 months, i confirm everything you talking about is correct .. i spent $2100 including rent of small studio type which costs $800 . So with $1300 i enjoyed alot only in bangkok . maybe 10 times disco , only beer , other night just walking in malls or tourist area , no fancy restaurant . Didn't travel to any island . Almost no taxi Only use subway , you absolutely correct about job there is no job for Foreigner unless it's related to club . In general it depends of how spending money . But i never seen any country with this positive energy, the final advice , this country is good for sociable person , every fun is base in begin social in thailand to finding new friends even every single day . If you are not this type of person so you dont enjoy that much . In one word just get drunk and enjoy this is thailand mean
Sadly, I had been looking to Thailand, but recent videos talking about the new tax regulations that basically allow a foreigner to get taxed twice (by their home country, and Thailand), difficulties getting permanent visas, and the fact that several industries there are protected for Thais, its looking less and less likely.
My advice, don't take legal advice from RUclips. Especially in Thailand when it comes to visas and taxes. The chances of you getting taxed in the first place are low, let alone being double taxed. A lot of industries are protected for Thais, but most of them are "entry level" type jobs. If you have a set of skills you're more than likely be able to get hired somewhere. bah it's easy to get a job in Thailand if you are qualified, the problem is you will be overworked because they need to pay you higher than others so you will be expected to work very hard and for comparably little money to the west (1000 dollars a month which is unacceptable if you come from a developed country). So, if you plan to come here and work it's all wrong unless you are a digital nomad making way more than that stay home, work and retire in Thailand later.
As a foreigner, its not easy to be in Thailand. Malaysia is a better bet.

Most Caucasian foreigners either move to Bangkok, Pattaya or Pai. Pai because it's 70-80% European living there which out number the local workers. It's kind of sad moving to a new country just to feel like your back home instead of going there to learn the culture of that country.

Regardless of your budget, Thailand will most likely extract all of it faster than you can imagine. If you want to be a millionaire in Thailand bring 10 million and if you're smart leave with 1. It can work, but you may want to spend at least a year there before deciding. Do not buy anything in that year apart from maybe your motorbike. Rent everything. and I mean EVERYTHING, na? Do not, under any circumstances, invest or commit to any long term financial burdens, women are at the absolute top of that list, are we clear? Do not end up a statistic, it's too easy to go down that dumb road. I'm your age and f@cked that up twice in my decades there. Be very careful or you will be broke quicker than you could imagine.
Give it the full year, be diligent with this. Ask any of us who have spent many years there, go slow. You may find that after that year that Thailand is not the place for you. If you've already "bought in" and are building a new home for your new "love" up in Issan... you botched the sequence already and are screwed. Phom poot gkwam jing na la kraap. Khop Phom.

You are a GUEST in this country (or any other country foreign to you) You dont have to be there but if you do, know that every country has its rules & social mores.
