I came here with permanent intent 6 years ago, and with a very open mind. However, what I have learned since, along with the perception that things are only headed downhill in all regards, has utterly deflated me and left me seeking a better SE Asian homeplace. Vietnam is #1 on my list at this time, but the Philippines is a strong contender.
Regarding your talking about people coming here and starting busineses, I ought to point out that this is strictly forbidden, except in very rare circumstances - for example - those who are very wealthy and want to start a business that would immediately guarantee to employ a significant number of Thai nationals. And that's about it. Thailand is extremely protectionist in its jobs market.
I live since 2012 in Thailand. Nothing of what you mentioned was a reason not to stay here. I find it easy to stay here. Easier and less of a hassle than living in my own country, the Netherlands, where I have to fill in Taxforms, have to deal with insurances, government, city, police and what not. I used to say that we had to pay for everything, even if I scratched my bum. There is so little I have to do in Thailand and everything except health insurance is much cheaper than in my own country. I can only say, that those who think they cannot live here: bye bye, good luck wherever you are. If Thailand is not good enough for you, than leave the country. I prefer to be with people who like being here, then those who always complain and not leave.

I wonder if the new DTV will help alleviate some of the visa stress for younger potential expats. I have no illusions about any country. I'm just looking for a place where 2,000 dollars a month can afford me a good quality of life. America isn't really an option anymore.
My understanding from speaking to an actual Thai immigration lawyer is that the Thai authorities don’t want foreigners spending more than 6 months per calendar year in Thailand on a tourist visa. The easy way around this if you have the money is bounce to Cambodia or the Philippines for half the year. As far as taxation many countries have tax treaties with Thailand that will protect you from paying tax again in Thailand if your home country has already taxed you. Also my understanding is tax would only apply to money received in a Thai bank account. So if you simply withdraw money from an atm or western union yourself a cash pickup that might help you.
Good assessment of what is and can happen. For me as an Aussie, eligible for a retirement visa, I would be more concerned with policy like the cbdc roll out and possible WHO treaty compliance by Thailand Gov. These have seriously affected my decision of Thailand as a possible retirement destination.
As an older expat, I am living here on a retirement visa. That being said, younger people may find it difficult to stay in Thailand long term without a proper visa. This is not saying you cannot get a long stay via if you are younger, but it limits your possibilities. Visa runs to neighboring countries is a thing here, but as Ian states in the video, immigration does seem to be tightening their belts on this. @KMOinT I concur that any young-ish foreigner will be hard pushed to qualify for a long stay visa (unless they have a laptop and camera and can use email, so qualifying as a digital nomad - whatever that is). It amazes me - the conceit of the Thai rule makers - which supposes EVERYONE desperately wants to go live in Thailand - for what?? No ability to work legally, having to pay much, much more for many things (both goods and services) than Thais, having ones movements continually tracked by the authorities as though they were all dangerous interlopers, being exploited in every way by everyone - but with a smile,, being subject to worse punishment for law breaking than Thai citizens are........the list is toooo long. I think I've made my case pretty clearly though.
I have lived in Thailand for 4 years. Thai logic and common sense is not easy to understand also those in power come up with proposed legislation which sounds dramatic but either gets very diluted or never happens.
no so much if you do it the right way. Visa on arrival then extend it if you can, and you can do visa run 2 times a year and then after that you must travel out and in from international airport but you need return ticket for out before your visa on arrival runs out . If you visa run more than two they maybe check you and wont let you in (could get banned), basically just that and you can be here for a while legally.. not illegal!
With all the Visa changes and problems back home, I've just been looking into getting my mom the Elite Visa. Seems like a good option for her since the things it offers and will take a lot of stress off me while traveling.
There are some good things coming like DTV Destination Thailand Visa. The one Tax rule to know is the 180 days rule. I go for 5-6 months, have a home in Chiang Mai, bank account, phone, no problems 🤟✌🏻
My wife and I were considering an Elite visa, however, the Tax law has stopped me from considering moving to Thailand. So we are not saying bye, we are not saying hello.

You say you believe the tax issue isn't probably going to be a big deal. You got that really wrong. Pensions in Australia are tax free so Thailand, under the Dual Taxation Agreement, means I am liable to significant tax. The tax scale increases all the way to 35%. My pension income goal will put me over 20% tax of my pension. Tell me that is not a big deal. Losing ⅕ of your money in tax. actually it can be crazy high if you bring 100k or more into thailand. Thailand has a progressive tax that is higher than the american tax rate at 50,000 dollars and up. There are no business write-offs on income so you pay the highest possible tax. If you bring in a small amount then you may not worry too much, but even 30,000 dollars will be taxed at over 10 percent on average. That is after you pay american taxes.
Great video appreciate the information thanks to RUclips too, being positive here I will never go to Thailand doesn't look like fun in the long term only short term
The tax liability is not a major cocern let me give you an example, If you transfer 500,000 baht to your Thai account for annual expenses your tax liability is under 30,000 baht First 15,000 baht 0% tax rate 15,0000 to 300,000 baht 5% 300,000 to 500,000 baht 10% If you live in another country for 6 months the cost would be more than 30,000 baht just pay the tax as another cost
The weather is extremely humid and the language might be an issue with its separate alphabet. However English is spoken by many folks. Sometimes you need a translater with Grab taxis. MRT in Bangkok is very good. The night markets are a lot of fun and good prices. Me and my wife live in the Philippines and we go their yearly. All the online shoppers here buy from Bangkok. Best time to travel there is November to February. A very friendly country.
Man... I just signed a 3 year lease! Next year, I'm getting a business visa. Paying taxes on the minimum earnings is a joke. Still cheaper than the elite visa, and I might make some money😂
Great advice. I share your attitude and its a healthy one...especially expect less and keep an open mind. Also leave any sense of entitlement the home country.Mix entitlement with alcohol and it can turn nuclear very quickly . Great video Thank you.
@tempustv There is a thesis in the waiting regarding the psychological aspects of expacts abroad. Many stick with a poor decision because the ego prevents one from admitting defeat at times. I think it's important to wake up to often harsh reality that leaving your country of origin to live in an alien land is abnormal . It can often lead to a person behaving unaturally , which often leads to disliking oneself which often leads to alcohol abuse and so the spiral downwards begins. However, the right attitude can lead to pressing thr internal reset button. Where past ghosts and mistakes can be put to rest and a rebirth can genuinely take place. In a new environment far removed from triggers associated with the country of origin. We can choose which path we take. Choose wisely . 😉😊😇😇
I'm over 50 but the Retirement Visa Requirements are insane. So are the Student Visa Requirements, so I am content with just coming and going, I read up and learn exactly how long Thailand will let me stay it looks like 6 months is the expected Max per Calendar Year, then I will go someplace else, Cambodia for example allows you to get a One Year Visa for about $500 and You can Work with that Visa. Philippines will let you stay even longer than that. So I will just go where I can go, and come back to Thailand when they let me come back, and if they get smart and let me stay longer, then I will stay Longer. I think the title of your Video was kinda Clickbait, I really don't think there are "TONS of Expats" leaving. There are a few, but those who are leaving never should have come here to begin with. I think it is more about knowing what you are getting into, than it is anything that the Thai Government is doing.
Visa runs aren’t too stressful, as long as you get back in. Lol. I’m not an expert but I’m coming up on the six month mark soon and that’s when I should start getting potential pushback from immigration. Education visa application next month! Hopefully that will remove some of that visa stress from my life. I love living in pattaya but it is definitely hard to make friends here who aren’t all about the nightlife. Great point. First time catching the new look as well my man, nice upgrade 👍🏻
I actually enjoyed the visa runs, I worked as a teacher for a year so did a few….i made a day of it! Had a good chat on the bus, a lovely meal at the border and chance to buy some cheap jeans and trainers before heading home to Rangsit. It is what it is Chill 😇
Some people can’t adapt to new environments and some people can find the beauty wherever they go. You have to adapt to the country you’re visiting, it won’t adapt to you.
Or maybe some people don't like it. I love it but recognize the cons. We each are different. We sometimes like different things. What is beauty to one is ugly to another. Does that mean that they are too stupid to recognize beauty or just have a different idea of it than you. Again, I love it here but don't frown or insult those who don't. Unsubstantiated arrogance is ignorant. Kudos to those for coming and trying, if you dont like it, you tried and I respect that.
Vis runs suck! Ive been here in Pattaya for 7 months and Ive done 2 Cambodia runs 2 in person extensions and just had a flight for 2 days to Malaysia. You can use the Thai word 'kahnja' instead of bud. When I think of bud I think of a beer.
"Bud" is more of a west coast slang from America
Great video appreciate the information thanks to RUclips too, being positive here I will never go to Thailand doesn't look like fun in the long term only short term
The tax liability is not a major cocern let me give you an example,
If you transfer 500,000 baht to your Thai account for annual expenses your tax liability is under 30,000 baht
First 15,000 baht 0% tax rate
15,0000 to 300,000 baht 5%
300,000 to 500,000 baht 10%
If you live in another country for 6 months the cost would be more than 30,000 baht just pay the tax as another cost
Still cheaper than the elite visa, and I might make some money😂
thanks for creating and sharing Have you lost weight
Dude, i think u should move to Ko Samui!
Great advice. I share your attitude and its a healthy one...especially expect less and keep an open mind. Also leave any sense of entitlement the home country.Mix entitlement with alcohol and it can turn nuclear very quickly . Great video Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thailand has alot if dangers right below the surface.
Mostly on the roads
No basic laws enforcement
Tax tax tax is why they are leaving. If you stay more than 180 days 25% income tax and you have to file a tax return
I challenge you to shave your beard, you would look very good! Hansum man! Thai girl want!
ore maby try a vacation bifor moving ther for good
I'm over 50 but the Retirement Visa Requirements are insane.
Yes you are right. Tons of expats aren't leaving. They already left over the past few years.
Do they want you to stay or go?
Visa renewal is a no no
Why do all the Thai people pronounce Pattaya as PA-ti-ya and all the farang pronounce it as pa-TY-ah?
Because those farang can't speak Thai 😂😂
pan-cake vs PA-n-cake 😂
It's expensive in some places to live in th
Please…if you’re going to say Pat…Tie…Yah…say it correctly 😊
Thank you 🙏🏽 I’ve heard it pronounced a few different ways
It's just too damn hot there mostly....too much
when next live stream?
Here in the next few days! I'll throw a post up on my community page as soon as I have a solid day/time nailed down. Thanks for watching!
It’s so hot
Now with the launch of DTV & 60 days visa I would expect tourist numbers would increase
Exactly!
Im ready myself to leave do to this hassle and the pot thing is a joke…. If I do the retirement visa I will lose $100 USD every month in interest just to put 22,000 in Thai bank.
we need to know the average weight of an expat so we can get an idea how meany "tons" is...
What do you mean it's not going to be this crazy absorbent amount? Have you had a chance to check the Thai web sight? It starts at 20% depending on your income and goes up from there. Come on.
Hey_bro I think will be back soon-to art season-! I think-interested ask you to do collaborations and ask-do you know much about do a love story and wedding movies for locals?
The main reason is lack of income, plain and simple. Do you honestly want to scrape by and get to retirement age with nothing? Sooner or later some people wake up. When AI makes content creators obsolete, you will be broke in Thailand.

Thanks and welcome!
Why? Because they are not welcome.
@@alexdeonversaagde if you watch the video genius, you would know.
If you watch the video, you would have your answer
Why can't most vloggers even pronounce Pat..taya correctly?
I've yet to have a Thai person be upset when I pronounce it wrong. Do you correct Thai people when they speak english with an accent?
Thailands ok ,.but your better off coming here jn your fifties, reason being the visas are easier to get.
During your 30s - 40s that's your peak earning years in your home country. Its better to tetire here that work is what im staying
Just go to an agency to extend
drugs are bad any way
particularly alcohol
They might have to ship me out feet first to get me to leave. I really enjoy living in Thailand!
You still ended up saying the w word twice😅
Hahaha
Tax ? Easily solved . Send your money from home country by western union and collect the cash. No trail .
ATM withdraws from a foreign bank account aren't assessable income. If weed is more important to your life than all the advantages living in Thailand provides, you might want to have a look at your priorities. Up to you.
Good you are giving details re reason for ex-pats leaving but man ! pause sometimes when your talking, give the listener time to take in what you are saying, guess you are a natural quick talker, but you have a you tube audience to think about, who do not know you from a bar of soap and I find your delivery irritating, slow it down, pause, I'll check on you again but will give up if it's the same as today's, I have also been reading about the canabis thing , I do not think anything will change, that's my take on it, cheers and beers !
It's Pa' "Tee" a'..... 😀 but ya farang don't say it that way 555
Guys that have sought out professional advice, are staying. A pro will show you ,your social security is not taxable. American Credit card charges paid for from an American bank, are not taxed.
Its cap gains or taxable income that is transferred from a US bank to your Thailand bank that is taxed.
Get professional advice. Dont just listen to YOU tube. 😊
In fact, it`s PA-TA-YA. Straight forward. It`s amazing how farangs always get it wrong.
Young people should be in their own countries working real jobs …
I'd like to hear what you consider a "real" job. For me, if you do something that creates income that you pay taxes on, I'd consider that a "real" job... Imagine being upset that the younger generation is leaving the safety of their own country to see and learn about new cultures, all while creating something for themselves that allows them to be their own boss and dictate for themselves how their life goes. Sounds awful? God bless
Then they ain't expats then. More like egg plants.
150,000 0%
150,000 to 300,000 5%
300,000 to 500,000 baht 10%
"A bit of an exodus". The young boy is alarmist. Maybe aimed at nomads?
I Love The Ladies!
Took about two minutes to find out that the u s a has a tax treaty with thailand protecting our pensions from thai taxation
