This was the first Marilyn Manson single I bought... My parents took the CD back to the store and cussed out the manager for letting me buy it because it had a "parental advisory" sticker on it. So, I went back the next day and bought it again....

I saw Marilyn Manson opening for Nine Inch Nails (along with the Jim Rose Circus) at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix on October 11, 1994. I had never heard of them, and they were touring in support of Portrait of an American Family (1994). I loved it, and I bought the album immediately. "Get Your Gunn" is still one of my favorite songs. Brian (Marilyn) is actually quite intelligent, even though most people only think of him as a shock-rocker.
I remember that tour because I had some friends who went to the NIN show in Salt Lake City, Utah and the next day they told me that NIN had ripped up a Book of Mormon on stage at the show. It turned out that it was MM who did it but I also had no idea who MM was at the time (no one did). NIN and MM both ended up getting perma-banned from the arena (The Delta Center) by the Mormon guy who owned it and the story hit the local news 😂. It was basically free publicity for MM.
@Rich Chappel You mention "most people only think" -- most people are fucking morons, as you must know. Shock rockers are among the most intelligent; observant, prescient beings in the mix. Frank Zappa, to Alice Cooper, to Ozzy, to Lady Gaga (sure, more shock pop), with Marilyn Manson firmly in the continuum. Don't love it all, but the unapologetic truth and genius there is transcendent.
I also saw that exact same lineup at the Frank Irwin Center in Austin, TX sometime in Oct 1994! ;) First time even hearing them and I was an immediate fan. Then they came back to Austin at The Backroom with Clutch opening for them in late 1995 and I hung out with Ginger, Twiggy, and got to briefly meet Manson himself, lol.
I saw them live promoting A.S. Manson got the stilts out and I will never forget. However “tech issues ensued “ total of 6 songs. Few people got upset. lol. Bad show, in the end. Yeah 1980 baby here, I wanna go back to and this time as an adult. To the 80's as well since that was my actual childhood. See those decades through the eyes of an adult would be fun as long as you were there on time traveling vacation with tons of money. Otherwise it would just feel like now where I'm working all the time with no money.
Such a great song, unique among Manson songs. Not about drugs, not about Satan, just pure American rock and roll inspired by a young boy's life in small town America in the 80s.

My absolute favorite song of all time. I know every word and can't help but sing along every time. The best song in the world, from the best album in the world, sung by the best rockstar in the world. Absolute genius. Everything about it.
@@budman8926 I call it being smart, genius, artistic, unique, distinctive, charismatic, mesmerizing. You cannot mistake him for someone else. His visuals are just as powerful as his music. Sure he is dark, but that's part of his charm and he knew how to attract people while still staying true to himself.
How can you possibly say that when theres not one single bit of evidence to support his guilty vs the mountain of evidence that proves her dishonesty? She was caught forging fbi documents. Disgusting world we live in @user-fi4pr
True, but he's also the "Big bully" now too... :( I say this as a fact and not what I want to be true :( and I"m a huge Manson fan since 1994! Marilyn Manson was better as a band than as a solo artist. I haven't listened to any CD since "Holywood" from around 2001.
Portrait of an american family is one of the most underrated albums of all time. Whenever somebody mentions Manson, they always talk about ”The big 3”(Antichrist superstar, mechanical animals and holy wood). Rarely do I hear someone mention their first album.
Antichrist superstar was the beginning of the downslope as far as I'm concerned. The earlier stuff was the best by far. I'm so glad I got to see them several times during these days.
Portrait of an American Family was hidden. It was so controversial, there was no hope of it ever becoming mainstream! Mostly unheard of, but the best album made!
Maybe it’s cause I lived in Akron oH and he’s from Canton or whatever, but Portrait of an American family was pretty much everywhere round here. Saw them a few times, first was a free show at the Agora that was apparently the kickoff for the antichrist superstar tour or really just when he decided he was the Antichrist superstar and went with. Great show, delivered on all the energy I heard to expect. Even came out on the good old stilts, one of the last times if I’m not wrong. Met and talked to his dad for a bit in the audience- nice dude, easy to spot as the only person wearing khaki dress pants and no black at all, lol. Anyways, wanted to say the portrait was great but none of the following albums were quite as good or rather didn’t managed to be quite the zeitgeist that portrait was, not for lack of trying tho
Dear Marilyn Manson (and Spooky Kids), nothing they ever do can take this from you. No truth, no lie, nothing. You will always be the guys who recorded Portrait of an American Family. That is nothing to sneeze at, and here is my thank you note almost 30 years later.
The energy of the old Manson records is just fucking incredible. Everything up through Holy Wood was just excellent, but Portrait is so unique. It's not as grand as the ones that came after, but it has those cheeky samples that really gives it a 90s feel, since I always associate sampling like that with 90s hip hop culture. It also kind of has this 60s/70s psychedelic rock vibe that is absent from subsequent Manson albums. I feel like this song is also when parents probably started getting fearful of Manson, and sort of made him into this cultural boogie man. If you weren't born in the early 90s, you have no idea how much of a social villain he was - parents didn't want their kids listening to Marilyn Manson. They didn't really want you listening to Korn either, but Manson was taking all of the heat off of the other guys and was something of a lightning rod for the alternative scene. He did well with it too, up until about 2002 or so he was still "that guy" and sold a lot of records to angsty teens because of it.
As someone that grew up with Manson from Smells Like Children on I can say that you pretty much nailed it! Manson was the hero for all of us,outcasted, weirdos. 2002 was definitely when it all went downhill. It was never the same again.
Absolutely unique when it came out . Nothing sounded quite like it , and Reznor´s guitar in the whole album was stellar ... I was obsessed with the heaviest shit you could think of by then and even though into everything from Skinny Puppy to darkthrone , Morbid Angel , Goethes Erben etc, etc ... this album sounded punk af , exactly like the 1st time I listened to minisdtry a couple years prior to that ... there´s a good comparison actually ... 1st time I listened to " The mind is a terrible thing to taste " - you simply cannot help but enjoy this kind of energy/ charisma .
Absolutely, it was when I started university and he released that "Grotesque" something.. I thought to myself it was either not good or I was getting older.. I never got the same taste and satisfaction from the proceeding albums.. It's good to see I share the same feeling at least with a few others
Melinda Rhodes he's playing the Hard Rock Casino here on Halloween night. Can't fucking wait!! Saw him back in '97. I just knew the "hits" then. I became a huge fan with Mechanical Animals. Then got into the back catalog and everything since. Anyways....What better night to see Manson than Halloween?!?
This has always been my favorite MM album. I grew up in Ft Lauderdale and was about 18 when they started to blow up. We used to see manson around town, in the movie theater, their gigs listed in RAG magazine, etc.... this video was filmed in a skating rink that probably everyone in ft lauderdale has been to at one time or another. We went there several times on school field trips. This era of MM was very representative of the sound of many local "heavy" bands at the time. Amboog-A-Lard, Collapsing Lungs (who practiced in the warehouse next to my band's), etc .i dont remember all the names..lol.. but at the time, the once ubiquitous grunge scene was disintegrating, and the rave scene was becoming very popular in s. florida and other places. Grunge was completely anti-image. MM took the opportunity to swing it around fully and make image very much a part of their band. Even though it wasn't, to a lot of kids at the time this seemed like a new thing, and it was very interesting to a lot of people.
My intro to Brian was when he worked at the peaches on palmetto park blvd in Boca raton . It’s a Taco Bell now . He would be in full mm dress while working .
@@jamesstewart3771 That's awesome. Everyone starts somewhere. My buddy had two bands that made it locally, and I always thought "I" was awesome because I knew the where/why/who the songs were written about
I like how Marilyn Manson seems to be stoked to give the younger kids a cool opportunity to be in one of his videos with him. You hear a lot of teens and young adults talk about how much they absolutely hate kids and I think that’s super uncool. He doesn’t seem to be that way. Harboring no hatred for the youth. Hell ya
Very well put! I agree completely. When I was in high school (that's when I first started listening to him), I was very wary about listening to his music because of all the stuff he's known for today. As you mentioned above, it's not that his theatrics are a bad thing, but his older stuff (and his stuff with the Spooky Kids) had a variety of rock and metal influences -- industrial, funk, heavy, etc. He was/is a very talented artist, but Marilyn Mason's past eras really showcased his talent as a musician and knowledge of music.
This album was gifted to me by my mother when I was about 7/8yo. I will forever love this song, I felt like my mind was being read bc some lil boy at that time kept fw me and I was like yup , time to fw him
Im 30 and i remember getting in trouble for jamming out to MM as a kid 😂 ☠️ i would change the channel back to listen to it again. Love the morbid dark truth and artistry of his music, it is genius.
Many think Marilyn is different or weird. But I just happen to be one of the few who love his intelligent mind, individual sense of art and music genre.
Also Gidget Gein.. *(yes I know, that's not him in the video, it's twiggy, but still. gidget gein was a very influential part of the band in the early days)*
Was there any reason why he stopped wearing the contact lens? I mean, I used to have long hair too and at some point, I got annoyed of it so I can understand *that* but I don't know why he changed his "trademark", the white eye...
Alfred Soul maybe it irritates his eye, and yeah for the long hair there is also another reason that is because of the next album. He made his hair red for Mechanical Animals and I guess after it wanted to have new hairstyle, no long hair anymore
things to do with your lunchbox: 1- eat the delicious meal inside 2-let the bullies from school eat it 3- make an oferring for satan setting fire in it while inside of a mosh pit with an goth guy and crazy teenagers rolling on skate shoes
+William Gabriel Its hilarious how ignorant you are. Marilyn Manson is an atheist moron. Therefore he does not believe in the devil. There is such thing called LeVayan Satanism which i am also apart of. We like to express our selves as satanist because most of us appreciate controversy so we can publicize our religion. Therefore we can respond to your idiotic comments with some wisdom for your stupid little brain.
I love all his music. I preferred the more metal albums like Portrait of an American Family, Smells Like Children, and Antichrist Superstar but at the same time I think all of his music is really good (especially lyrically). Also, he's lost his voice from performing songs where he screams so softer vocals will be the trend for Mansons stuff in the future.
i think every album of his has its own uniqe sound to it. Portraits fun and raw metal sound, Antichrists darker and more melodic, Mechanicals spacey and funky sound and the pale emperors little more classic 80s kinda sound. i dont know but i just think it works. every album is great in its own way, maybe except high end of low and born villain.
This was the first video after shortening their band name to just Marilyn Manson ( dropping "And the Spooky Kids). Before the costumes and theatrics came into play.
This song, for me, is the Song that Captured me, I WAS COMPELLED TO SING ALONG! What an Odd juxtaposition in the video of the chaotic band playing and the smooth flowing skaters. Not to mention the kid, who we all know is going to grow up to be Trouble for his parents, society and even himself. 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000th FAN
Even luckier knowing that him and his parents were best friends with Manson and the other band members. During this time, Manson and the Spooky kids were just a local rock act from Florida where this was filmed, and only the hardcore Indy Goth/Mosh kids, Satanists, and Metal Heads from Florida knew who they were. So no one until the release of Antichrist Superstar and the Sweet Dreams cover (When Manson became more mainstream) knew just how big Marilyn Manson really would be.
Um Sweet Dreams was before Antichrist Superstar. On Smells like Children. Don't forget Portrait of an American Family either. His music was on the radio before Antichrist.
Holy shit. I've had this album since it came out and I just noticed that when .Marilyn Manson starts the song with "I Bring You" That and the "Fire" clip come from a song that is The Prodigy's first album that came out in 1992. On the Prodigy's album the line is "I am the God of Hellfire and I bring you...fire." Tool me nearly 30 years to figure that out.
My mother was so proud to show me off in my *"salvation army"* shirt. Since she got her prescription glasses, she's cut that same shirt out of all our old photos. 20+ years my dad never snitched👍(2:45)
As far as musicality goes this will always be one of my favorite Manson songs because it was an exploration of so many sounds. The snippets of movie/tv voices, the spoken word, rap-style lyricism, and the melodic chorus with groovy guitar riffs that carry the song from verse to verse. Portraits was a great first album and it only got better and bolder with time. Manson has made a musical evolution work in his favor, something a lot of rockstars fail to see through.
This was Trent Reznors sound he produced the album. I agree this album was one of my favorites. I never cared for his later music and this is why, I was always a nine inch nails fan and all that music was made by Trent reznor.
@@InsaneGilligan Reznor? He was the producer, but all the music was made by Scott and Brad. They're the ones who created the Manson sound and Reznor ended up ruining it in Antichrist Superstar
I remember when I first saw this video I was 15 and it came on 120 min or Alternative Nation, one of those old shows that played at like 2am on MTV. I was star struck and totally turned on. haha I miss the goth/ industrial days of the 90's. Skinny Puppy, Front 242, NIN Pretty hate machine, Nitzer Ebb, good music, unique.
@@death666giving This IS one of the earliest songs he wrote so......this is one of the songs he wrote when breaking away from poetry. if i remember correctly, he still hadn't adopted the name Marilyn Manson when he wrote this.
Manson is still fire. I actually don’t like John Wick 2 and 3 cause he didn’t come back to do the soundtracks. Killing Strangers completed the Noir Vibe that just made it work.
It's crazy the difference that eyebrows make. Cause I was having a hell of a time trying to figure out why he looks so different in this video compared to all the other ones I've seen (besides the obvious lack of make-up), and I finally figured it out. He has f***in' eyebrows in this one.
I love that in the lyrics of this song Mr. Manson encourages people who have been and are harassed by a bully to not let themselves be abused, and to defend themselves against bullies.

Ya got that right!
True, but he's also the "Big bully" now too... :( I say this as a fact and not what I want to be true :( and I"m a huge Manson fan since 1994! Marilyn Manson was better as a band than as a solo artist. I haven't listened to any CD since "Holywood" from around 2001.
DR. HOUSE M.D. Hmmm, you might want to give The Pale Emperor a shot ;-) I find it pretty interesting... Maybe you'll like it ;-)
Pan S. A Cleveland Steamer to music? LOL! Interesting! :P
Portrait of an american family is one of the most underrated albums of all time. Whenever somebody mentions Manson, they always talk about ”The big 3”(Antichrist superstar, mechanical animals and holy wood). Rarely do I hear someone mention their first album.
Ikr? And its one of my favorites from them!
Antichrist superstar was the beginning of the downslope as far as I'm concerned. The earlier stuff was the best by far. I'm so glad I got to see them several times during these days.
He does good covers, but portrait was his best work, imo.

The greatest hits album
Do you think that Brian and Jeordi remember them times or are too big of "Rockstars"?
Imagine when that kid got older and he was able to say “oh yeah, i was in a Marilyn Manson video”
Yeah yeah Ok.
Think about that every time bro lol!!
The Kid also was the Lead Vocals of the Song "my Monkey" from Portrait of an american family album
His parents should be hella proud
I think that’s Cole Sprouts
Yes my sentiments exactly!
my dad put me on when i was 9 years old on my way to little league games
It turns out, the correct way to deal with bullies is what bullies fear the most, retaliation.
Hands down his best song .wish there was a whole album in a style like this song.
There is. It’s called Portrait of an American Family.

I saw him back in 97 to in Jacksonville Florida. But I will be seeing Marilyn Manson at the aftershock tour in two more weeks. I can't wait.
The most underrated MM song by far.
Not really. He still plays this song live.

+AliceManson Cyclops is my favorite off this album, but everyone has different opinions on what's over and underrated.
Nearly 6 million views isn't underrated
best manson album IMHO
Definitely has the classic rock tones! Love this song!
What skating rink was it? Is it still around? (doubtfully but worth asking)
@@Alienated29 it was called Gold Coast Roller Rink. Not there anymore.
My intro to Brian was when he worked at the peaches on palmetto park blvd in Boca raton . It’s a Taco Bell now . He would be in full mm dress while working .
It's a cool album for sure

That's awesome.
Hell ya
I watched his documentary and the kid in this video was with his dad at the studio and Manson was in the next booth and that's how he met the kid
Bloody lucky kid
Yeah, even then Manson was cooler than everyone else
Acctually Manson has a lot of kids in his videos.
@@TajemnaTemnota I almost get the feeling he actually wouldn't try to scare kids intentionally.
MANSON (1994). One of his best eras in my opinion... Also, he was sexy as all hell.
hell yeah!
+Dorothy B Actually back then, his music was more about the performance art than anything else.
honestly . he's always sexy af.
So true

Was there any reason why he stopped wearing the contact lens? I mean, I used to have long hair too and at some point, I got annoyed of it so I can understand *that* but I don't know why he changed his "trademark", the white eye...
Alfred Soul maybe it irritates his eye, and yeah for the long hair there is also another reason that is because of the next album. He made his hair red for Mechanical Animals and I guess after it wanted to have new hairstyle, no long hair anymore

This never gets old! Rest in peace Daisy Berkowitz!
I hope this child knew how lucky he was
Even luckier knowing that him and his parents were best friends with Manson and the other band members.

Holy shit. I've had this album since it came out and I just noticed that when .Marilyn Manson starts the song with "I Bring You"
That and the "Fire" clip come from a song that is The Prodigy's first album that came out in 1992. On the Prodigy's album the line is "I am the God of Hellfire and I bring you...fire."
Tool me nearly 30 years to figure that out.
