Lincoln, ESAB and Böhler all have great 7018 products. Some lower tier, some upper tier, all for different market segments. I don't have a preference myself, as long as it's from one of the reputable brands, it's much of a muchness for me. You just make them work for you. Keep up the good videos Jody. Long time follower.
Great video Jody, the information , explanation, and examples of welding were awesome. Even this OLD DAWG enjoyed watching . Some day I will get enough welding done to lay a bead like that. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
I used to love Excalibur but I've started to really like the esab atom arc 7018...seems to run smoother and slag comes off easier than the lincoln in my opinion
I like Excalibur for the easy slag removal but I have noticed porosity on some re-starts. My rods are getting a little old now so that’s probably where the porosity is coming from.
Love the Excalibur, runs smooth, good bite, and of course the slag removal. Back with Hatfield Electric 30 plus years ago, would beg for 7018 for certain applications. Welding and fabbing brackets for riser runs and electrical fixtures the shop would only send out “5P” good ole 6010. Welder was an old Lincoln 3 phase vertical bullet, painted school bus yellow, our company color with a Blue HE painted on it. 7018 woulda been nice for the flat runs and some fillets, but the shop must have had stock in 5P. Always cleaned up the welds good, and sprayed them with cold galv. Great times with a great outfit! You sure bring back memories , JODY. Much appreciated. Truly like now I’m retirement, occasionally pick up a side hustle, that I can use my own Excalibur 7018, that I bought. 😉. Like to get my hands on that European rod and give it a go.! Thank you JODY🙏
This was like 11 years ago mind you. While in welding school, a vendor gave us some iirc .045 FCAW wire and 1/8 7018 from a company called bohler that i liked.
ESAB is the best for me,we are running 8018 high pressure pipe,100% x rays. Some of the other welders like Excalibur.Personal Preference.Good video Sir👍🏻
We use the conarc 49c here in south Australia for low temp pipework in the gas fields not really my favourite rod but thats what there procedure calls for
Excalibur has never done me wrong but for what it costs you would think it's gold plated. If I'm buying the rod anymore I use that Hobart 7018. it's cheap and runs smooth as butter.. No complaints
I use Conarc 49C often and like this electrode. Excalibur in Poland I have not yet met on wholesalers. CONARC 49C is stable and when properly stored, hermetic packaging is brilliant and works. In fact, the nuisance of descaling in the case of fillets occurs, but with subsequent stitches it detaches itself. It doesn't bother me, I use a needle scaler always and everywhere - if possible. And quite seriously, I weld with Lincoln, Esab, Bohler, Oerlikon, Castolin Eutectic products and each of them has its leading products selected for a specific task. Regards
Dude Excalibur sucks! Inspector on a job in York haven pa In 2016 took a pallet of it and had it on a forklift to throw in the dumpster but then gave it out to anyone who wanted it because he didn’t let us use that junk on the job. Esab all the way
My favorite E7018 was one of the first E7018's [ invented circa 1947 by Lincoln] It is LH-70. The much vaunted Excalibur was developed for pipe welding, it has a thinner coating, less slag, many like it. Lincoln LH-70 IS THE ONLY E7018 THAT MEETS MILITARY STANDARDS in the Lincoln E7018 family of rods. Excaliber, LH78, LH73, 7018AC DO NOT meet mil. stds.
ESAB. You can get the long rods. The flux does not break off of the rods very easily. you can nearly bend these rods and still have the flux stay on. They do not fingernail, easy re starts, they wet out real nice, And in my opinion are the best rods on the market.
I've been using conarc 49 since 2015. Decent electrode, still prefer the esab 7018. Needs must and all that. The conarc 49 has changed ever so slightly after about 2021. Twas more robust before 21, flux falls off a hell of a lot easier now.
I like the rod 7018 because it's a uniform weld and I don't have to waste time with the slag so it's it's it's a time consuming waste time and you have to clean it real good and it just doesn't come off and you want a nice finish prep for painting
I'm often use Swedish ESAB OK48.00 due to the lack of Lincoln rods on local market. As for me, they are very good. Would be great to see your comparison of these rods and Lincoln. Thanks.
ESAB ATOM ARC 7018 !! Excalibur is JUNK in my opinion. I always run ESAB. Almost every job I’ve been on always uses ESAB. Smoother arc and slag removal is great.
Can you please make comparing video between Lincoln excalibur and Böhler analog of 7018 with the same guy behind the electrode holder, because he is killing it! We don't see much Lincoln electrodes here in Europe and i'm curious about behavioral differences of the rods, restarts, slag peeling and bead appearance. Thank you for everything you are doing for the community and the trade Jody! God bless you!
I work with a great welder that always has one curled up, burnt finger on his left glove specifically for holding the rod. He doesn't even put his finger in there. If you're a too cold Excalibur won't peel as easily. I'm always on different machines and that is a dead giveaway that I need to turn it up.
love conarc 49c at my workplace the rod we use now (slag peels of when you angle more so to say with the heat direction to the pudle/ i use 115 to 125 amps but doesn’t always help guess only easy for blowing slag back) what i do really like is the gentile nature of the arc and the spatter or lack of , for a root on a v weld one of my favorite conarc 49c and filarc 36s esab 48.00 and oerlicon tenacito 65R (filarc 56s too) do you have a different opinion?
I like Hobart XLM because I can simply buy it at Tractor Supply 15 miles away and I do not really notice a difference in weld quality between it and Lincoln Excalibur. If Tractor Supply or a Welding supply store near the farm had Excalibur rods, I would easily but them over Hobart because the slag does fall off easier.
Am I dreaming or did Andrew's arc length seem a tad bit long to anyone else? Beads looked great, but the globular transfer looked a little off to me... I'm using Excaliber 7018 at the moment, like the clean puddle. Had good results with Hobart and American Alloy in years past too. Heck even Forney has been decent in a pinch, but don't waste you time and money on Napa's Firepower rods, you'll be swimming through the molten slag.
I use Excalibur but prefer Bohler. I can't find it in 50# boxes. And when the welding store only offers it in 5 or 10# at a time it is more costly per pound. Are you able to get it in 50#?
Always glad to see a video from Jody! I'd like to give Excaliburs a try; LWS only seems to carry Hobart. I occasionally get a slag peel, seems more prevalent when burning a full rod (or most of it). So, while it can be more common in certain brands; is the increased heat input playing a role in getting the peel? Thanks!
Excalibur runs the best, IMO. It takes a lot if heat, and I’ve found that it likes ~90% of the suggested amperage range on the package. It’s a bear to restart a half-rod. The puddle is super clean and I really like how it runs. ESAB Atom Arc seems to restart a lot better and maybe run smoother but the puddle doesn’t look as good or clean for some reason.
I tend to mostly agree with the conclusion, I do wish you had done some vertical welding though, I prefer Excalibur for fillet welds down-hand or overhead, but for pipe welds, or vertical up fillet or groove welds I much prefer conarc 49C, I find it much more forgiving as far as bead profile and undercut go than Excalibur rods. But as for favorite 7018 rod, it isn't 7018, given the option I will always reach for 7016 over 7018.
I like air liquide 7018 blue shield. Also Arctek 228 xc which is similar in composition however can be run on lower carbon castings and medium carbon steels. I will burn whatever I am provided though.
I always found the flux on the Blueshield 7018 had a tendency to break and flake off fresh rods. No prior warning sometimes, you'd just strike an arc and poof, there goes a bunch of the flux
Big fan of the Excalibur. I’m curious about the Iron Arc line that Lincoln has. Are they a lower tier rod for cost savings or are they just something new? Looks like they they have been out for a few months now. I hope they are not looking to replace the Excaliburs.
bolher 7018 rods are the best, most consistent and never had a bad batch. They just flat work and dont finger nail or have the problem lincoln always has. Esab is a good rod but pain to get CoC or MTRs on the rods.
Bohler 7018-1 it's best rod available in my country, Also 6013 RR double coated rutile rod 6013 RC rutile cellulose For some specialty repairs Carbotrode 91 by german company "Carboweld". This rod is so easy to use that's ridiculous.
Now that I buy my own welding rods I get my 7018 from Harbor fright. My only complaint about Harbor fright 7918 welding rod is the flux comes too far down on the holder end of the rod sometimes making a bad connection to the holder. And not the best peelers.
My experience is Excalibur has won my first choice! Second choice due to the convenience of access to a tractor supply would be Hobart especially if its nothing real critical. Stay away from Lowe's Lincoln fleetweld 7018, 6011 🤮
@@ComommonlyCensored most of the stuff I glue together isn't that impressive but I do try practice code welding everyday also Airco 300 freaking awesome and big 40
As most of the American consumers will likely say, I prefer the Excalibur since that’s what we’re pretty much limited to in terms of these two options. Great video as usual, thanks Jody!!
Hobart or Esab. Any Lincoln rod to me is junk. Over 35 years ago when my father started teaching me to Weld, he would not use and Lincoln rod. And with him having me try diffrent rod i learned real fast how much better hobart is over Lincoln.

I used to love Excalibur but I've started to really like the esab atom arc 7018...seems to run smoother and slag comes off easier than the lincoln in my opinion
I agree, I’ve only run about 20 lbs of it but it’s as good or better than Excalibur
I love Hobart 7018. Wets in and is really smooth out of position
I like Excalibur for the easy slag removal but I have noticed porosity on some re-starts. My rods are getting a little old now so that’s probably where the porosity is coming from.

I love excalibur/ millenium, but the other day I ran some Vulcan 3/32 7018 and it ran surprisingly good!
Those harbor freight vulcans do run well, dont they? Very surprising
I think we may need a harbor freight stick rod bend test in 😉future videos

I honestly prefer Hobart 7018. I have been having all sorts of issues with Excalibur flux falling off the past year.

As far as restarts I always have to file or grind the end of a 7018 'trode because the filler ends up nested behind the flux. No mention of that here.
The V205 is a machine built by Selco in Italy, you can still get them, it's just the newer version.
Bohler Fox or ESAB for 7018-1 rods for me 👌🏻
Excalibur all day
Come on now throw that Excalibur in your nearest metal dumpster and get some real rod, Esab all week
I personally prefer Hobart. In my neck of the woods the people who love Excalibur are usually the people who never buy their own rod's.
I would have liked to have seen a cut and etch to see if there was any difference
ESAB ATOM ARC 7018 !! Excalibur is JUNK in my opinion. I always run ESAB. Almost every job I’ve been on always uses ESAB. Smoother arc and slag removal is great.

My AC machine can run any 7018 AC rod like E7016. Able to produce a big enough charge to overload any flux foreign to AC too.
I enjoy the Excalibur a lot but I also do really like the bohler 7018's too
I use Excalibur but prefer Bohler. I can't find it in 50# boxes. And when the welding store only offers it in 5 or 10# at a time it is more costly per pound. Are you able to get it in 50#?

Hey jody can you make a 6gr with fluxcore video please
Do a video on 7028 electrode
Jodi, try electrodes from high performance products (Hpp) you will be impressed.
Conarc are better for test or site vacpac no need to put rods in oven / quiver I would have gone for 130 on amps if your bothered about slag
From the UK don’t like the Conarc preference would b the the Philips 56S
