  • Harley Davidson Milwaukee 8 Crankcase Venting - Trask Transmission Cover! I have used both the ‪@FeulingParts‬ vented dipstick, and the ‪@TraskPerformance‬ vented transmission cover in the past (on my ‪@harleydavidson‬) 131 crate motor, but as of yet hadn't done anything about it on my Road Glide. This time I went with a Trask vented transmission cover that I purchased from ‪@DennisKirk‬ (crazy quick shipping y'all).

Hey man I just wanted to drop on and say thank you. I bought a brand new rg in 2020 at the age of 26 and less than 8 months later I was put out of work with a stage 3 cancer diagnosis. I didn't get to ride much but thankfully I was able to hold onto the scooter and now I'm cancer free and actually putting miles down and thanks to your videos Im about to start turning my own wrench on some things. Again, thank you

Crankcase venting is necessary because air is being constantly displaced whenever the engine is running. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.7 psi. When the piston travels downward it compresses the air within the crankcase, when it travels upward during it's compression stroke the pressure within the crankcase drops quite a bit. So the air within the crankcase is constantly fluctuating as is the air/fuel mixture within the piston chamber.
Oil being an incompressible fluid (air is just a compressable fluid) is constantly moving around with the fluctutions in crank case pressure as well as moving within the oil galleries due to the oil pump pressure. Some of this oil moving around becomes blowby: HD redirects that oil into the piston chamber in order to comply with EPA regulations. While this is good for the environment it's bad for the engine as it results in more carbon build up within the piston chamber.
You want to vent the crank case in order to reduce blowby, but you also want to vent the crankcase in order to reduce migration of oil between the engine and the transmission.
A vented dipstick from Fueling is a good thing to have, also a vented transmission cover from trask. DK customs makes a nice setup to catch oil blowby and instead of having that oil redirected back into the piston chamber it goes into either a catch can or a filter.
Venting the crankcase on an M8 is a no brainer. The larger the displacement an engine has the more venting it needs.
Also a no brainer for the M8 is replacing the OEM CAM plate and Oil pump with one made by either Fueling or S&S. Doing this esnures better lubrication which in turn reduces both wear and heat from friction.

Got one. After going to a stage 3, I had oil dripping out of the air cleaner. Tried the vented dipstick first and that didn't help much, then added the air cleaner bypass trick. Lastly, got rid of the dipstick and added the trask case vent and that seemed to solve the issue.

  • @richardrussell500

I also installed the Trask vented transmission cover along with the external head breathers from DK Customs on my 2023 107 Street Glide. My previous two M8s had blowby issues and consumed excessive oil. I have also used the Fueling vented dipstick, which started to leak. Any hoot, the problem with the vented dipstick is the location. More is vented from that area because of the amount oil sloshing around. And because of this, Fueling highly recommends that the internals be replaced at every oil change. The Trask setup sits higher and does not suffer from the oil sloshing around. With the vented dipstick, I was still getting puke from the head breathers into the catch can. With my current combo, the vented transmission cover is doing such a great job that I get damn near zero puke out of the head breathers. So far, my oil level is staying steady. Time will tell. But I am happy with this combination. Trask highly recommends also venting your head breathers externally with their vented cover :-)

I would put my own fitting on the stock cover and run my own hose before I spend $350 on a new cover. Trask can go screw themselves if they think I’m spending $350 for that.
On my previous bike I ran a DK Custom oil catch can with my own hoses and fittings and probably only had maybe $75 in it.

Venting the transmission doesn’t help with engine oil blow by. The transmission and engine are not connected internally. This would only help with transmission to primary oil transfer which has already been fixed by Harley with a vent tube since 2020.

Oil pump update... M8s still suffer from too much crankcase pressure. Your engine will run better if you vent it. @@blownmouse another good insurance policy is to install the Fueling short sump plug... HD quality control is lacking these days. the sump plug they use on the bottom of the case is too long. and, if installed too high into the case, it can block oil pump flow, which could lead to sumping. it is amazing to me that HD has not sent out a recall on this. there is one particular service manager who admitted that HD is aware of this potential problem. the shorter plug is installed at a specific height into the case preventing protrusion. ride safe : - )

Aren’t you supposed to route the breather up to a higher point on the bike ?
Also, the dipstick and trans top are not the same as external breathers. Re routing the breathers does just that. Sends the oily mist elsewhere and does nothing to relieve crankcase pressure. The vented dipstick and trans top do.
