After reading some comments, we should have been more specific: It is possible to install this on many M8 softails without removing the exhaust - but when we do the install we try to get a torque wrench on as many of the bolts as possible and the exhaust gets in the way of that. So yes, it can be done, but not the way we want to do it. Hope that helps!
Where is the check valve located on the Trask transmission cover option? Is it eliminated when a catch can is used to replace the Trask filter? I'd like more information about the check valve's function and location. Thanks!
I installed a threaded PCV valve from a 2011 Honda Element. It's metal and threaded. Ran a 3/8 hose to a small filter. Looks O.E. and works flawlessly.
As a retired auto mechanic, it boggles my mind why Harley hasn't simply come out with a PCV system for their motors. You bring in fresh filtered air to displace the blowby gases from the rings and vapor from hot oil, and suck it back into the intake to mix with the incoming air fuel mix and reburn it. Just like every automotive engine has done since the early 70's.
Good video. I did this myself with a 1/4" Hose Barb, a check valve, filter and some tubing. Total cost about $40. There are videos to accomplish this yourself and save a lot of $$$$
Kupiłem nowego Harley-Davidson za bardzo dużo 💲💲💲 i teraz muszę go poprawiać po producencie 😢. Wszystko do wymiany, Software, wydech, wałek rozrządu, odpowietrzanie silnika i wiele innych. Czy to jest model z serii "Zrób to sam" 11:46 ? Powinien kosztować połowę swojej ceny.
I have a S&S exhaust on my 21 LOW Rider S and I did not have to remove the exhaust. had plenty of room to get the covers through the right side. Now as far as the bolts. I wish I had some shallow sockets.
I have a 17’ SGS and have both the external breather and the Trask CheckM8 and haven’t had any oil in my catch can… a little water/oil condensation though. I ran my Trask filter behind the right side cover but, like your idea to go above the cylinders! Thanks for the tip!
I have a 17 mile brand new to me 107 Street Glide standard. I do not have intention to go bigger, but am curious if this is worth while as an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure kind of thing.
It is a good idea my only deal breaker is that hole that goes to the oil pan is real small I rather trust my a1 vented dip stick I have had it for 15 k I get no oil out of my head vents to each his own I’m sure it works but for the money. I rather go with dipstick thanks for the information of This
Can I vent the crankcase with this system and delete the breather at my intake? I have an external breather system now, but prefer to clean up the engine compartment. 2020 M8 107.
I have a question is that gasket blocking the air from flow up the fittings and filter it seems like it block air flow. Correct me if I am wrong . I understand the gasket maybe of hard and soft metal is this true.
My understanding is that Trask has an internal one-way valve that it would not rob vacuum function. Some ppl do DIY but be sure to install one way check valve externally connects to rubber hose n to the breather filter.
interesting product and well explained. I hope this isnt a stupid question but I am from the U.K where it rains a lot, could water go into the filter and back down the breather tube into the engine?
Just installed and my oil issues on my exhaust and bags is gone. My Covington Custom Road Glide has a Fuel Moto 124 high performance kit and has always has these oil issues. Now gone. Not cheap but simple and effective.
would having a cam affect the amount of oil pressure coming through the checkm8? I have one installed similarly to how you install them but after about 500-1k miles I had a bunch of oil spraying out of the filter and all over the side of my bike
Stupid question 🙋!! Do I really need to run that goofy tube somewhere or can I just put the filter on the nipple on top of the cover and be done with it?
Having the length of hose extending vertically to locate the filter above the top of the cylinder head may help keep any oil from reaching the filter. (due to it being mostly straight up and its length) yes, it would be best if you used the supplied hose. The manufacturer designed it the way it is for a reason, I mean, who would know the best way to install it other than the peeps who studied the problem and created a remedy?
The 2024 model baggers actually come with a very similar vent from the factory. There is a vent line running from the top of the trans cover - main difference is that it routes to the intake manifold rather than to the atmosphere.
@@IronAnchorCycles So do you think this will still be an issue on the 24’ & up models? Looking to get a RG in a few weeks and want to be prepared for an issues.
I have been riding on the street over 50 years, Triumphs, Sportsters, Flatheads, Panheads, Shovelheads and lately acquired a 96 Evo. I find it rather humorous that every time Harley comes out with a new production engine and motorcycle, somebody has to invent a way to fix the problem that they didn't put enough R & D into finding and solving. They copied the "Vard" front end to replace the springer for the 1949 model year. (Vard built aircraft suspension for WWII aircraft) The first foot shift on the big twins was the Speed-E Shift. I could go on but if not for the genius of aftermarket products, Harley would have been regaled to the scrap heap years ago.
Harley has the ability to fix the problems. They're limited by what the EPA tells them they can do. That's why they route the crankcase pressure back through the breather instead of venting it to the atmosphere. Every brand of motorcycles manufacturered today, can you use modifications to increase performance. People who ride other brands than Harley Davidson aren't as in tune with their bikes or they just don't care.
Yes, you can do it cheaper. Trask unit is expensive, but not really overpriced. It’s a nice billet piece as opposed to Harley’s shitty plastic part. Quality machine work is expensive when you figure the investment required.
Over priced, considering their are other cheaper option that do the same. My current bike has a plastic cover, by the way it’s made in China like many other parts on my Harley.
It's bullcrap that Harley can even sell motorcycles that don't function right. If I would have known that, I never would have bought the M8. because all these parts, especially that little plate, is way overpriced. It's ridiculous The greed in the motorcycle industry. in anything really

how’s it working after u had it awhile ?

Wow, I’ve been so confused over trans top venting and head breather catch cans until now. Fantastic explanation. Thank you so much!

I dont like the plastic cover
Any chance you can share the video for the DIY guys like me
Whats wrong with a plastic cover? Nothing.@@vincentwebster8313
Ditto. Barely $40 and easy to complete. Remember to use a new top cover gasket, $1.99 at the dealership.
@@vincentwebster8313😅
I made my own cover for 25$ works like a charm!
Literally just fitted one on my 117 lowrider and you don’t have to take the exhaust off, it’s jus a bit of a pain to get to some bolts but possible 👍
Great Video!! I have the Trask Transmission Cover myself on my custom 131ci and it has considerably helped with the venting.
Thanks a lot for explaining the different compartments of the cover. I was confused as to why there is already a vent in the cover.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Does this void the factory warranty?

By buying the check M8 would you still buy a external breather with oil catch can?

Is it recomanded to close the head vent bolds ?
I just recently bought one of these and notice that I have something rattling inside it. I feel this isn’t normal. Is this normal?
I have a question is that gasket blocking the air from flow up the fittings and filter it seems like it block air flow. Correct me if I am wrong . I understand the gasket maybe of hard and soft metal is this true.
Great video... the concern is a loss of vacuum. Your thoughts?
My understanding is that Trask has an internal one-way valve that it would not rob vacuum function. Some ppl do DIY but be sure to install one way check valve externally connects to rubber hose n to the breather filter.
@@paulson9616 it has a check valve installed in the cover... it is a Reed valve.
Just picked up a 2023 softail and I get a burnt oil smell when coming to a stop. Could this oil from the breathers be the issue?
great job with explanation . thank you
Yes but how does it handle hitting 12?
interesting product and well explained. I hope this isnt a stupid question but I am from the U.K where it rains a lot, could water go into the filter and back down the breather tube into the engine?
I have check M8 the hose and filter runs under seat and covered by the right side plastic cover
Just got one installed at Trask. They put the filter under the seat. Never thought to ask if the filter needs changing. Any idea?
I've seen it done where the external breather vents to the trans cover. Essentially making a loop. Does that make any sense to do?
Great video and info. Thank You
Can this same type of mod be done on TC? Does venting the crankcase priced any benefit if sumping/blownby aren’t an issue?
Just installed and my oil issues on my exhaust and bags is gone. My Covington Custom Road Glide has a Fuel Moto 124 high performance kit and has always has these oil issues. Now gone. Not cheap but simple and effective.
Can you not just eliminate/plug the ports in the air cleaner after installing one of these?
Is it worth installing the Trask solution on a standard 107 engine?
would having a cam affect the amount of oil pressure coming through the checkm8? I have one installed similarly to how you install them but after about 500-1k miles I had a bunch of oil spraying out of the filter and all over the side of my bike
I put this on my FXLRS. Just saw the oil drips on my exhaust today after about 500 miles. 😢
I have a 107 should i be concerned

Is there something like this for 96" Twin cams?
Do you know if the 24’+ M8’s need this? Their heads are redesigned and liquid cooled.

Yeah, Right!
There is no way I’m paying $350 for a modified trans cover when I can modify mine for about $20. No f***n way what are they smoking?
Was literally about to drill and tap a few things to vent my new bike. To h*** with all that I'm getting one of these 👌
FXR built please.
i made my own vent on the trans cover with a check valve and breather for less than $75.00
I want to do the same and do you mind sharing how you accomplished this DIY
Seems like ill do this trask and a oil catch can at the air cleaner.
probably level 2 install but not to difficult. 1 bolt takes forever with an allen wrench. but its $$$$$ 300.00
