"Long long time ago, I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
    But February made me shiver
    With every paper I'd deliver
    Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
    I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
    The day the music died."

I'm 79 now. I went to Pacoima "Junior High" in the 8th and 9th grades from 1957 to 1959, starting just months after the infamous plane crash. A friend of mine was on the playing field at the time of the crash. He had little memory of it other than there was a loud noise and then boom! If my memory recalls correctly there were four students killed and numerous injuries. One of the injured students lost a leg. Numerous others had to then go to other schools as the trauma was a bit too much for them to return. My main memory of school was Valens' return to the campus for a free concert in '58 (?). I got crowded out of the school auditorium he was performing in and had to listen to a small speaker on the entry court. Side note: Little did we know what lay ahead for us with Vietnam, the 60s social and political struggles, etc. I went to 'Nam in '68. I arrived in Jan. I was wounded four times and was helied out in June '68 from the last of my wounds. I've been Army disabled-retired since '69. I tell all young people to work hard to bring out their best abilities. Richie Valens is a symbol of what I mean because you never know what may happen.

Ritchie Valens real mom had a cameo in the movie, it was the scene where they’re celebrating for Ritchie I believe, and their whole family and friends are in the house, and the part where two of his family members are holding the camera recording everyone and they show a guy and an older lady on the couch, and the older lady is Ritchie valens real mom 👍

My Mom and her two sisters were at the Winter Dance in Clear Lake, Iowa on that fateful night. They drove from there small town near Waterloo, IA. to attend. My Mom's birthday was the 8th of February, so kind of an early celebration. Evidently it was an interesting ride home as the weather wasn't good, lots of snow. It always kind of affected her. As the next morning they found out about the plane crash that took the lives of the young singers they'd just seen. My Mom has been gone since 2011. She's no longer here to ask, but I remember the story she told, along with my Aunts, who are all gone too. It affected them all differently. My Mom refused to fly at all, my older Aunt who drove that night, refused to drive at night in heavy snow. The middle sister loved snow but hated fog her whole life and refused to go anywhere if it were foggy. I know that it was a long, nerve wracked drive home, but that's not what they talked about. It was the music and the people they'd met. Years later when they'd talk about it, normally around the holidays when lots of family members were around, the subject would come up. I could see the change in my Mom's face.....not saddness exactly, but a forlorn look almost wishing the past were different. Hard to explain, but very powerful. Thought I'd share that for any others out there that may remember their parents talking about it
    Jill Gross

Incredible story about your Mom and her sisters. My mom's birthday was on February 6th. My parents were newlyweds, (just like Buddy & Maria) married January 17, 1959 Flint Michigan. Their stories of how cold that winter was no joke. They were both fans of Buddy Holly. Side note. My folks both graduated HS in 1955 just like Buddy. I'm Sorry for the loss of your Mom and aunts. I lost my Mom in 2006. My dad in 2011. RIP😢

But of course it went on to become amongst my top ten list. As I was watching I was surprised to see the drummer, who I knew from the video store I worked at. He had membership there. 2nd I also took the Ritchey tour. Basically what you showed. However when I was at his gravesite a woman showed up there. She said her nickname was “boots.” She was very nice and offered to take me to the house he grew up in. She did! She said she took care of him as a baby. I thought that that was so very cool!
