I just realized that I get into watching these pedal demos like my kid gets into watching toy reviews. FX pedals really are just toys for musicians, after all! This one sounded rad, love the ability to easily modulate the loop. Very cool!
Absolutely! Near the end of almost every one of Emily's posts, I head over to Reverb to see if I have enough in my piggy bank for buy whatever pedal she was playing on...(answer's usually no)
That’s awesome! I too when I think of pedals as “playing with toys” like a kid again and where the sense of wonder is found. Anything seems possible unlike the world outside can seem to feel limiting.
Hahaha I have more fun with effects now than I had with toys as a kid!!! This one was especially fun to play with, I haven't found a tape delay I really fell in love with until now!
Thanks so much, Scott!!! This one is definitely a keeper!! I've got another video coming in a few weeks (it also has this pedal in it) where pretty much the whole thing is lofi chill harp the whole time!! I can't get enough of it myself hahaha
@@emilyharpist I’m looking forward to it, too! My baby was screaming and having a horrible time falling asleep, but when I put on this video she immediately calmed down…. until it stopped 😅
Really nice and tasty playing as usual. A lot of people swear by vintage effects but as a former owner of an early 1970s Echoplex I can safely say the modern pedal versions and software plug ins are much better. The tape units sounded good but they were really finicky, sensitive and unreliable. Too many moving parts!
I've never tried any of actual vintage effects!! I think I'd get too frustrated with trying to replace the tape 😂 pedals just make it so easy, honestly!! The only reason I think I'd want to try an actual 70's Echoplex would be to compare it to pedals like this!!
@@emilyharpist Hi Emily. Just subbed due to the glee contained in this review! The functionality is far better on this than on a vintage echoplex. The tone is close and you could get closer with a preamp such as the Dunlop EP101 to give it the vintage vibe.
This has a pleasing number of lights/knobs/switches, a reverb, a moving slider, a reptile, so it was already a winner; on top of that, it's a really cool delay pedal/looper. I think with all the five decades of obsession about the Echoplex where we've all marvelled over the preamp, and then the regeneration characteristics (and the solid twenty year stretch where everyone though tape delays were innately dark when they're actually high-passed with each repeat), few people have talked about the loop function on the original Echoplex that has always been there (and even became the centerpiece of the weird Gibson/Oberheim rack unit thing they called an Echoplex but it was actually just a looper with really cool features and a massive footswitch; it was what Battles used until they got Ableton) All that said, this is something completely beyond the original in all sorts of ways; the secondary feature of the reverse loop on the trails switch does something cool I haven't really heard before except maybe on the Red Panda Tensor, and even with that the Geckoplex has a really pleasing "lag" (generated by a whole live gecko) that makes the sounds sweet. And just about every echoplex type pedal has been missing presets, it's about darn time. All this is to say: Motorized fader make happy. (and would go really well with an Expression Ramper) You know what else makes happy? You guys and this channel. Hope to see you next livestream. :)
Very lovely pedal! Really works well on harp, with a dreamy seaside resort vibe (especially your first track!). I love how well it works with an expression pedal for delay time too! It really is a sweet sound, mixing the nostalgia of a tape loop with some new lofi sensibilities.
One of these days I'm gonna find a video of you playing some kind of crazy metal on harp, and then my life will be complete. Love your demos. This pedal is amazing; that loop reverser switch is unreal. Thanks for being awesome.
I really love the reverse and rate of speed control of the loop! It def could be used at multiple speeds in a single song for effect. Really nicely done!
I've seen alot of demos of this pedal and you sold me on it in twenty seconds with the looper in the beginning and then over and over again afterwards now I'm convinced I need one even just so a poor little gecko doesn't die of hunger waiting for a owner to feed the little guy inside he's gonna get pretty hungry with all the running around I'm gonna make him do lol you look cute as always and great playing
You must play epic music on this pedal to release the inner gecko... The more you play, the more mystical locks it undoes until, at last, the box opens and the gecko is unleashed into the world, free, and the world will reverberate with its majestic colorwheel of tonality.
Those motorized sliders are expensive! I looked at using some in a project, but they were almost $20 each. Now that I know about the GCU (gecko control unit), I'm actually surprised they could train the geckos for less than $20! I had no idea that they were so smart!
It's such a cool pedal!! I actually think this would be better than most other tape delays on bass - a lot of them roll off the high end, not realizing that they're emulating tape degradation. That high end is important, especially when using with a bass!! We'll give it a go with the bass in our studio and I'll try to keep you posted!!!
Hey Emily Hopkins! Thanks for sharing your unique sounds! More positive creativity generates more better unviverses! If you are still open for recommendations to new musicians to discover may I recommend Esquevel! He's quirky cool from the 60s and was a total innovator! Also Stereolab! Start with their album dots and loops! Ride ride ride!
I think Volante is the better deal at 400 dollars. It has the same speed and reverse settings but does the SOS thing, a mechanical slow down for pausing the loop, the ability to do multi-head and change head spacing and panning of heads, and more control over the kind of tape saturation and modulation you can get. I just couldn't bring myself to pay 130 more for fewer features.
Another great review of a great pedal. I was hoping to hear what the gain overdrive sounded like. This is a feature many guitarists used these machines for, without engaging the delay features. I'm not the only one, who loved the rich harmonics coming from your harps, using the high gain pedals. Keep up the good work.
Emily Love how you got these EFX Pedal down you use them like a guitar player or bass player there’s a guy on here he has over 1000 pedals for his guitar tried or is trying to get in Guinness World Record with playing all his pedals I myself think you have him beat Plus your Music Rocks 🎸🎸🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻 Love the smile to keep on rocking girl
The Geckoplex is probably the nicest sounding tape delay I've heard. I'm thinking one of these would actually go beautifully in my new (and growing) synth performance setup. I got myself an Arturia Minibrute Mk1 last week and I love it! I actually haven't touched a guitar since I got it, I've been spending all of my time learning the Brute and running beats while routing the brute through every effect plugin I have, guitar amp models, delays, phasers and filters. Midi is turning me into a twiddler! Lucky I still have my superguitarist hair... Thanks Em, great demo of this pedal. I'm gonna go look it up and then sob quietly to myself about how I can't afford one just yet.
I had a minibrute for a while it was awesome!!! It’s so much fun with pedals and the low end is so great. I’d honestly love to hear this through a minibrute!!!
I play my flutes, whistles and guitars through the pedal board. Your videos are inspiring, I should do some flute with delay/verb demos. I was rocking out with a DOD Rubbernecker at rehearsal last night- good fun. But it's all leaning on actually getting into the pedal from the mic signal or pickup, I've got a simple rig and a fancy rack one for whichever gig. But the preamp or transformers are critical. - How do you go from harp pickup to pedals with correct impedance? Buffer? Pre-amp?
Somehow, seeing the pedals demo'd on an instrument that I don't play helps me understand how it'd be applied for the one I do play... Figure that one out...
I'll bet this pedal would have a lot of variations and uses for harp, bass, guitar and others. Imagine the Octobass with this pedal. Or a vocalist with a really low range ? Hmm....
@@emilyharpist I kinda just assumed that RUclips musos in general would know that name, but I look forward to the videos where you're doing lo-fi, Alice Coltrane-inspired demos featuring microtonal harp tunings and ridiculous tuplets. ;)
