Ford Raptor Towing Issues SOLVED! Was my new Trailer a BAD BUY?

  • Last November after taking delivery of our 2020 Polaris RZR Pro Xp I realized that I needed to make some major upgrades to both my truck and trailer set up if I ever had hopes of towing both of my side by sides somewhere. So, the search for a new truck began and I settled with this used Ford Raptor. Admittedly not the best tow vehicle but I was swooned by its smooth ride and crazy power. Then I began searching for a trailer that could carry both of our UTVs. This proved to be quite challenging since most trailers over 24 feet long are heavy equipment trailers that are way to heavy. I landed on this modified mobile home trailer some one had built specifically for towing their 4x4 units. I later discovered that the load was far too great for the raptors soft suspension. This is when I discovered how big of a difference weight distributing hitches make. This $300 dollar set up saved me a world of head ache!

the load should be basically centered over the trailers axles with some tongue weight.

Bags will level the truck, but they actually put more weight on the rear axle. Weight distribution hitches actually transfer the weight through the frame to the front axle.

It’s a raptor, it’s not meant for hauling heavy stuff. I had one and they have the power, just not the suspension. Airbags will fuck up the way the suspension is supposed to work and handle when going fast off road.

Every time I see a video where anything lighter than a diesel HD has a trailer hooked up, commenters are clamoring for a bigger truck, or airbags, or a multitude of other things. You were right in loading the SXS in the middle if it is just one. The weight has to be over the axles with a little more to the front to keep the trailer from swaying. Do not put it up front if it is only one.

They're rubber helper springs that replace your bump stops. I have a set on my Taco and love them. Put a 1000 pounds of concrete in the bed a couple of weekends ago and the truck was level. Have fun!

Glad I discovered this channel! Looks like a sweet setup. The weight distribution works exactly like your pendulum theory when you loaded the second side by side earlier in the video. The bars push up on the rear of the truck when you add load. They also add stability against trailer sway. Load the heavier side by side last and push both back as far as possible to help decrease tounge weight as well.

Ok, for the people that are wanting to put airbags on a raptor. Get a different truck!!!! The raptors are not made to tow heavy stuff. Shocking! Get a 3/4 ton or bigger if you want to haul tons of shit. I had a raptor from 2013-19. It had the power, that wasn’t the problem. The suspension is soft and meant for hauling ass off road. I sold and went with the AEV Ram 2500.

Scary as hell that I have to share the road with people like this. Easily you have exceeded the GCVW of the raptor. Deaver springs would help but not get you legal. You also strapped the rzr through the bumper, oh dear... maybe you should not use the comment “can’t afford suspension upgrades” when you have a raptor and a rzr. Think about this, you have over 100k rolling with a $3500 trailer and a few ratchet straps to bolted on bumpers.

You ran into the Achilles Heel of the Raptor…it’s rear spring package.. You added all that Overland stuff and that along with everything else didn’t leave much load capacity for tongue weight. The WDH is fine BUT..Get a set of Deaver springs in the “+1 HD”…..that will lift the rear end 1” and the HD gives you more arch and spring rate for increased loads. You will be surprised at how well it will handle when off roading and towing. …Yes I own a 18’ Gen2 and love it..

    Matt,
You made a statement to the effect that if you were to tow out to Oregon, you’d trash your leaf springs. I’m suspicious I did that towing a horse trailer out west as it sagged badly before I left and now that I’m back, it is still sagging without the trailer!

Yeah thats a concern of mine as well. The trailer is wired for brakes but two of the axles are not working properly, so before we do any real trips with this thing I want to make sure all the brakes are serviced. I'll keep you guys posted in future videos

Maxx, you definitely need to invest in some real straps. You NEED 8 straps, 1 for each corner of each vehicle. Right now you have 1 strap holding the front side by side. If you lose it you will lose the load. You NEED redundancy for safety. Otherwise you could by liable!
