    I own both, love driving both. But the Dodge SRT gets me more excited getting into than the Raptor. It sounds better, is quicker, and has a better interior. Great video and comparison. These are the 2 best Truck and SUV on the market.

    • @deanhallockify
      @deanhallockify 6 лет назад +13

      Viren vs the raptor has smaller engine, more weight, bigger tires and the truck is not designed to tow... the durango on the other hand is street oriented, much lighter and yes a bigger engine but that means that it doesn't have to work as hard because it has more power.

      Alex Bajo apparently you dont know much about trucks and towing. vehicle weight, tire size, and engine size/power output are the biggest factors when towing. and at the end of the day, neither vehicle is designed for towing. and you shouldn't use so many insults for no reason, it makes you seem immature and unable to have a civil conversation.

    • @Stuka87
      @Stuka87 6 лет назад +12

      We have no way of knowing which got better economy. They would need to fill both trucks at the bottom, and then see how much it took to get up the hill. TFL has proven many times that the in-car computer is wrong more than it is right.

      I like that idea. Time the acceleration to the speed limit and then time every moment it can’t maintain speed due to power. I know it’s not practical but I would love to see you floor it the whole way up to truly see who’s the fastest. I’ve seen Ford do a video like this showing off the 2.7 vs the competition.

    • @JonBecker81
      @JonBecker81 4 года назад

      Trey K yeah It doesn’t show which one is actually faster when they both are able to just maintain 60. I wish they could find a big long hill like that where there’s traffic and do it side by side drag race style. Or better yet take the trailers to a drag strip and do a 1/4 mile. TFL, if you’re reading these then make that happen!

    I had the F150 2013 booster and now the 2018 Raptor with improved version of same size V6. They both get remarkable fule economy when only lightly worked, but both guzzle fuel when worked harder. However the new Raptor mileage is better than the 2013 regular version. The Raptor is not what I would buy as primarily a tow vehicle, but I do use to tow my utility tractors when needed and that has been no problem.

    So the Raptor has a higher gear ratio which hurts MPG but it's tires are nearly 35" tall which more than gives it a gear advantage for fuel economy (and 2 extra gears). I blame aerodynamics, the Raptor is wider and taller off the ground.
    Either way... put the Hemi in the Raptor and the gas mileage would more than likely be the same as what the ecoboost got or slightly better. Which is my point. I don't hate the Raptor, I hate the engine.
    If a much larger displacement engine with less torque can beat a turbocharged one up a mountain in fuel economy... well then the whole point of an ecoboost was just shit on.

    Aren't we missing a couple of things? No mention was made that the Raptor was able to maintain 60 mph at only 3k rpm in a higher, whereas the Durango was at 5k rpm in 3rd, I believe. As to mpg, the Raptor develops more horse power, which takes more fuel to deliver.

  • @TheBlecht

    The lack of brake controller and smaller tank on the Durango should make the Raptor the winner right off the bat. Add that the Raptor did the towing test quicker and I think it should be pretty obvious.

    I just traded my 15 BMW X5 diesel for a 18 Raptor. While I love having a truck again I miss the mileage and ease of towing the X5 was capable of with an Execuhitch setup. It towed my 7x20 VRV with Harley in it from Mass to Sturgis and back at over 14 mpg. The Raptor just towed the same setup to WV and back getting 9 mpg as an avg. both towed the trailer like the sports vehicles they are. Great acceleration and brakes. The Raptor in tow mode down shifting when brakes were applied is great feature.

  • @thudtheace

    The difference in MPG besides weight and tires (of the Raptor), it is also due to the use of turbos, stuffing more air into the engine requires more fuel.

  • @danielcurtin7616
    @danielcurtin7616 6 лет назад

    Everyone commenting about the raptors fuel economy. There’s no free lunch in physics, turbos basically allow the engine to simulate displacement under load but when you cram in more air you also have to burn more fuel. It’s eco-boost, you can get eco if you stay off the throttle, or you can hammer it and get boost.

Weirdos like me will (occasionally) want to haul 10,000lb trailers along with 11 passengers. (Taking a big family boating on the lake, perhaps?) Business owners might want to see how their vans can handle Ike Gauntlet-level torture testing as well.

    I give up, the Durango is the greatest vehicle ever, buy one today and in 5 years it will be worth 10 tines more than it is today, it will carry 5 adults and a couch can be tied to the top , or anything else you want to tie up there , anyone not driving a Durango SRT is crazy. Unparalleled quality, exceptional fuel Milege and will easily out perform any racing vehicle ever built. Even though the sticker says 72 thousand, Dodge will discount it so much that even minimum wage earners will easily be able to afford it. I predict this awesome vehicle will out sale the F150 this year, god what a vehicle FCA has created. I am sorry for everything written before!

    Seen it before in other car tests, the more powerful car gets better mpg when you actually drive the two cars in question in the same way. The problem is when you have a more powerful vehicle and you're not testing it directly with another less powerful vehicle, you tend to want to experience all that power. So you get less mpg.

    So wait, the smaller 3.5 V6 actually got WORSE mileage than the larger 6-something liter V8? Let's keep in mind, the Durango clearly wasn't built or geared for towing, which is why the engine was revving higher and trans heated up like it did. That being said, the EPA rated numbers not only show the V8 being more efficient, they made the same run at the same time and the V8 got slightly better mileage while towing.
    DISCLAIMER: I know it all has to do with the turbo setup. Ford banks on the "ecoboost = eco = fuel efficient" misnomer.

    the mpg difference is most likely because of the turbos vs a super charger. The super charger adds more low end power making, great for fuel use while towing. Turbos add more high end power. So they burn more fuel at lower speeds, while producing a better acceleration at higher speeds. This affect also raises top speed.

      Dylan Rittenhouse what?....turbos DO give more low end power more efficiently than superchargers especially twin turbos. Modern variable blade turbos are also great at widening the Power band of an engine.
      FYI- superchargers take power from a engine to run them VS turbos have zero parasitic energy drain so are more efficient. The negative of turbos is the engine bay space they need.

    I would assume axle ratio played a lot in the mileage department on top of the raptor having bigger tires, wider and less aerodynamic. Both did great though but the mileage difference should be obvious.

    Love this! Like all of your uploaded videos, can we get a tow up the ike gauntlet with the new Ford Explorer. I don’t think we’ve seen on yet?!???

    When a manufacture determines said tow ratings, is that at sea level on flat ground? Or, is it at high elevation going up a 7% grade? For me, towing at high elevation up a grade would change the said tow ratings of any vehicle.

    Why drive the Durango in manual mode? Should of kept it in automatic I own a 2015 Durango and unlike my BMW they don't up or down shift when needed you need to manually shift to the next gear I've noticed that if going up hills by having it in manual mode it slows it down if not shifting properly re-do the test and you will see a time and fuel difference.

    For that kind if money I'd definitely go for the Raptor, too bad the dealers are marking them up $20-25k

    Awesome video, I'm guessing raptor won due to turbos keeping power better in high altitude and broader/lower torque range intended for p/up truck/towing duty. Just a guess though, could be wrong.

    Why don't you do accelation towing tests as well as the ike gauntlet. Of course any vehicle will be around the 8 minute mark because you are going to same speed all the way up no matter the vehicle. It does give you a good sense of mpg and rpms as you climb but the time is kind of irrelevant.

    I suspect that coolant temp isn’t high, it’s honest. Most coolant temp gauges are just idiot lights masquerading as gauges, they’re going to just sit in the middle under normal conditions.

    I heard you say that you manually shifted down to not brake as much. The point of other trucks were to see how the transmission handled the downhill.Ok know this was for fun. But maybe a suggestion because when you used the manual shift down one the transmission handled the downhill well, off brakes etc. I was wondering how the difference would have been on the F250 and Chevy if a manual shift would have happened and see how the trans RPM’s handled the hill. They were both 10 I think. So if a truck had to brake 5 times then you would manually shift down and see how it handled. So in the same test we would already know that its has to brake a lot, so more than 5 is already not great. But then we could see how it would handle with a manual shift , which is what we would have to do anyways..... Ok suggestion done...... I was always curious to see how it handled if that would have happened. Thanks, keep up the great videos!!!!

      NonRev they only manual downshift when it’s a Super Ike test like this one.

      joe blow My memory might be going but I thought that was the super Ike when they did the F250 and Chevy. They had hit 10 brakes. Maybe my memory is fading. I’ll have to look back. Not that Diesel one. That grade shifted great. The 6.2 one. After it broke down on first attempt...........Watched again so last edit...Ha . Kent said this is the Super Ike HD. One against the Ram 2500. Actually did 12 brake applications... same as Ram. They did not manual brake..... Like to have seen how the 6.2 handled if a manual shift would have happened. Maybe make the second half of downhill more interesting. Thanks.

    Really surprised the Dodge didn't break down. Seriously, I thought it would over-heat. 71 Grand for a Durango, wow can you say kapoweeeeee! Sad thing is, after you drive for a 2 years it's only worth 35 grand. That Raptor holds it's value like no other.

    Could you guys dive deeper into what exactly makes the raptor motor a high output? Seems like you could achieve these numbers by some simple had held tuners. I'm sure Ford put some goodies in side that motor but what exactly are they?

  • @k.r.v.4219
    @k.r.v.4219 6 лет назад

    Hey the 30% increase in mileage correlates to the increase in displacement! As the bigger engine works less! Sure tires make a difference, but so do twin turbos. Everything in the outcome of numbers bring only one thing out, demand on the engine. One is a high strung smaller engine, tuned about as high as you can. The other a big displacement that is also high tuned, but not with forced induction. So cylinder pressures are not as great in the bigger engine!

  • @michaeljohnston6020
    @michaeljohnston6020 6 лет назад

    The MPG is simple. Turbos on a engine use more fuel when under boost. You have to march air to fuel ratio otherwise you engine would destroy itself real quick in a hurry. Won’t even make it a mile. Even Diesel engines use more fuel at boost. Eco term should not be used on a truck anyways if you’re using it to work regardless. 90% of the people won’t work their trucks for what they are designed for, so it won’t matter. Great motors for both neither is a piece of shit. They are just using different technology to accomplish a task. Brand loyalist will always be haters. I personally respect what all manufacturers do to make their brand unique.

    You can't get good mileage revving at 5000 RPM. On top of that you have an suv made for the street vs a truck made for off road... Really good comparison... Next time match up a Camaro vs a Ford Transit....
