I'm only in the hobby for 2 years now but you convinced me. I'm switching from my Desoro DeLeon to the AT Max. I found one new for $679 new with a 2 year warranty. I'm driving 3 hours tomorrow to a dealer that will meet me outside there shop. YAY! Stupid covid!!! Thanks brother, I appreciate the input and your time. And thanks for all the countless hours of entertainment. If i cant be outside digging for my self this is the next best thing.

Dude, that review was so Good!!! Contained Absolutely Zero Bull Shit!! The fact that you have NOT been bought off by the Almighty Garrett Metal detecting Gods. Just makes the review So trust worthy! I do however, have to admit that I incorrectly assumed that you where in Garrett's Pocket. My Bad. Again, Thanx 4 sharing your knowledge of these machines in such a straight up manner!!

After swinging White's for 30y or so ,this is the unit that is going to be the next. Best bang for the dollar, especially coming from a very reputable company. I was glad to see White's and up there. All the best Hoover Boys, and epic finds!

Will be placing my order next week.
Thanks for the best comparison on RUclips.

Sir Kurt, thanks for holding out for the improvements in the AT Max. Based EXCLUSIVELY on these videos by you guys, Jocelyn, and Aquachigger, I pre-ordered while you were still testing them, and finally received mine yesterday. Yes, I know Nuggetnoggin was using it too, but I was watching you guys more, at that time. It's really light and sweet, especially in comparison to my Minelab Excal II and CTX 3030! Gonna try it in my own yard tomorrow! Excited! Thanks for the internal volume control!

Great review! I have had my AT MAX for a year and still learning. It's a coin monster. Max finds the coins and Foo Foo Juice cleans em up. With the cordless headset I will never go back to a cord. Thanks for all the great videos!

Thanks for the review. I have bought the at max this winter and i dont regret it. You overpay some 70 $ compared with the at pro but get a screen light, volume adjustment,a better holder and of course wireless headphones(so you dont feel like a dog on a chain). A great mashine and a awesome review. Respect from the Republic of Belarus. Im signing.

Seems like I have been waiting forever for this machine, but the wait is almost over!!! I am new to medal detecting, I researched which machine I wanted, decided on the Garrett AT Pro. But the very week I decided I saw the field test that Jocelyn & Hoover Boys performed. From that point my mind was made up. So wish me luck as I venture out in this world of metal detecting. And I pray that I get a lot more "Bingo" than I do "A Big No" LOL, But have to dig it all.
Thank You: Garrett, The Hoover Boys, Relic Recoverist, Nugget Noggen

Great review, very thorough and unbiased. I hope to get my hands on a AT max someday and retire my bounty hunter, or give it to my brother. Very inspiring to see the weight coming off, Eat your lunch, just a healthier choice of lunch! I've lost close to 25 pounds in the past few months by cutting out the processed foods and sugar. I would venture to say you've lost more than that. Great job!

Awesome Kurt I am so excited to get my hands a Max. I've been swing my AT Gold for about 4 yrs now and have really enjoyed it and am very pleased to say that as of three days ago it not only paid for it's self I believe it has covered the cost of the AT Max. I found a bucket lister that many may have on their list but few have ever found. Not a word of a lie I found a one half once 24K gold ingut in an old school play field at about 8-9 inches in sandy soil. The first time I really wish I had a camera with me.
This by the way was hand pored and has no mint marks but I did do an acid test on it. And as a prospecter for more than 40 yrs I have l had little dought about what I found, just still in shock still. So the next day I went back to said field and dug 14 million pull tabs and found 13,999,999 pull tabs and one ten gram 22k gold wedding band. I love my AT Gold and will never give it up but I see the Max as the new improved Gold. What is really exciting is ever place I hit with the Gold is getting re hit wit the max. Thanks for all you do for us GL&HH I will forward some pics to you for your viewing jealousy I mean enjoyment:)

Hello I heard you mention head unit breaking/falling off on AT series. I found a place called Shapeways. they make a bracket that fits on back. You use the 2 bolt holes that hold the head on and 4 other holes that I believe is where the speaker is located. I purchased 2 several months age and they work great. No modifications necessary screws right into existing holes. and you can choose different colors.

I wanted to thank you for your dedication towards this hobby and especially for sharing all your info via YT videos. I picked up this wonderful unit and truly never used it. I'm retired from the United States Navy and I was injured during my Afghanistan tour in 2012-2013. I definitely do not feel like I did when I was not injured however I count my blessings that I'm alive and enjoying my family and friends. This week I took out the AT Max to mentally get ready for this great hobby and immediately became overwhelmed on how to successfully operate this machine so, I went to YT. I'm in the Northeast Florida area of this great country and I'm even thinking about finding others to detect with. I'm very excited that I finally got the courage to start this endeavor, lol. I learned so much from this video and I will be watching your "Field Test" videos shorty. Thank you so much for all your efforts to help somebody like me. If you're ever in the area with the fellas let me know and maybe we can hit the dirt together. Be safe and thank you, your generosity helped this guy, Navy Mark...

In the end if you already have an AT-PRO spend the money on a NEL coil instead of buying an AT-Max, you will get much better depth! Now if you don't already have a PRO then go for the AT-Max. Also the wireless headphones are a nightmare anywhere near a Cell Tower!

Couple comparison tests I would love to see:
Speed and recovery time compared to the Deus. Test in heavy iron, trashy park with pull tabs and can slaw.
Test against the CTX 3030 in trash, iron, depth comparison, target ID, and in hot ground and/or salt water.

that comparison would be as equivalent to watching a drag race between a prius and a corvette !! the at pros are good value wise , but lack the modern technology that the minelabs or the deus have... Would like to know how this guy acquired this machine that's not on the market yet in the U.S., and had involvement in the volume and back light they built into this machine , which is the only improvement that I have seen or read vs. the other at series detectors, along with their pictures on garrets calendars, and boxes BUT isn't sponsored by garrett !! would be like Dale Earnhardt JR saying Budweiser never sponsored him He just liked the beer so he put their name on his car !!!

hiluxyota From what I can tell is that the Garrett has a really tight coil field which gives really good seperation on targets as shown in the video. My CTX doesn't do that well, instead it will show multiple targets seen by the coil. Maybe it's just because it's a single frequency as opposed to Minelab's FBS approach.
Something I would like to see tested is by putting a dime between 2 big square nails which are raised 2 inches above the dime. Seen the Deus hit the dime in this test, but the CTX and many others fail miserably.
One thing that I don't quite get is why Garrett used such a high frequency. What I learned from my Minelab X-terra is that a good all around frequency seems to be in the 7 KHz range. Going above around 14 KHz aligns best with low conductors. A few vlf gold machines go over 30 KHz. But when I use the 3 kHz coil, it's a real magnet for silver and copper.

The deus will be faster in reactivity 3.. Let alone the higher settings.
Its the exact reason the deus is so popular over here in Europe, the iron contamination of a roman habitation site is off the scale.. I doubt you need that recovery speed in the US. The deus is the fastest machine period. By a long way.. But you can slow it down (unlike most machines).
Really the deus is in a different league technologically, its uber versatile, but as I say, its perfect for European conditions, I'm not sure you NEED its features in the US. Also, it's more of a tone machine, Americans seem to be obsessed with VDI but the numbers are of little relevance where you've had thousands of years of metalworking.. Hundreds of targets share the same numbers so there's not much point considering them.
The CTX is also a very different machine, I don't like it, its heavy and slow but its great on mineralised ground and beaches due to the multiple frequencies. However, I recognise its a top flight machine.
What I'm saying is, comparing them isn't fair.. You can adjust both the CTX and deus to outperform any Garrett in any situation (if you know how) Comparison tests will only tell you about the users skill, not the machines performance.

Iffy Signal I have never personally used nor even seen a Deus in person, but know others who do use it with great success. I like to think I've become pretty darn good with the CTX especially using tones only. The VDI is nice in its place, but in trash it's only the tones that get you the finds. As for needing the capabilities of the Deus here in the USA, there are a lot of sites that are just carpeted in iron and junk that are virtually undetectable except with the best equipment and highest skill level. Imagine if you will trying to find a small coin under a sheet of aluminum with rusty nails and copper wire bits around the coin, and that's close to our typical park hunting! ;)

Great job. Fantastic show . The max was a go to detector many years now. I'm wondering way the Deus 2 is not replacing your equinox 800 if it is a better detector? I also noticed that minelab just came out with the equinox 900. Constant battle to keep up with it all. I love the matrix of garrett the best and I like the fact that I can change batteries out in the field if needed

Excellent review. Almost feel guilty hanging such a great detector on the wall. But when you're going to do better (Garrett) build on great! I wonder what Garrett will do with the Pro? I expect it will be the new hot used detector which will keep it's price high, because it is so good. I'm still a "Whites" guy, been faithful for decades. I must admit Garrett has had me thinking. I have no doubt about the success of the AT will continue to be second to none.

With the Max, they could have put a separate iron volume just to turn it down a bit to hear a good target over the junk sound! The other thing I notice is if you have a nail/iron above a coin or next to, most times the iron wins! Same scenario with disc all the way up you you will hear a slight iron crackle and won’t hear the good coin target in the ground or air test. It’s seems like the iron masks the good target. I feel like the Max is an iron monster. What are your thoughts on this? Do you experience this?
    Thank You!
