Geoff Marshall - The railway was cut in 2 near Ilderton during the 30's because of a bridge collapsing due to flooding, it carried-on for a while then closed completely long before the 60's when Dr Beeching swung his axe
Just what I wanted to see on an Easter weekend! Free movement, free association and walking in wonderful landscapes to amazing castles! A great Easter weekend - thank you for making and sharing this!
Great challenge. Great footage even though you technically had little time to film much at each site. Thank goodness you caught the crossing on time which means you had plenty of time to get back before you washed the tyres. Trust Geoff to hijack with the railway viaduct. Anyone would think it was his channel 🤣😂 Thanks for another great Vicki explores. Stay safe everyone. 🙏
Northumberland is such a fantastic county. I've visited all but Edlingham castle and went inside them all. Another one well worth a visit is Dunstanburgh but you have to walk there because there isn't a road. About a mile and a half north along the coast from Craster. It's a ruin, but spectacular and in a stunning location.
Chillingham castle was my childhood playground! My dad was the warden for the chillingham cattle. The castle was still derelict back then and an exciting place to explore as a kid! You missed out on another castle on your way from chillingham to bamburgh.... Ros Castle... not an actual castle, it’s a hill fort, but from there you can see seven other castles.
We went to Chillingham last year and agreed that it was possibly the most bonkers castle in the UK. The owner (who has done a great job of restoring, but not over-restoring it) is clearly as mad as a box of frogs with a magpie-like collection habit. The highlight for us was the room full of torture implements which is creepy in the extreme. Beautiful surroundings as well - don't miss it if you're in the area.
@@jamesrichardson476 Sir Humphrey has done a wonderful job at bringing the castle back into use, without him I dread to think what state the place would be in by now! But yes, definitely mad as a box of frogs!
Excellent video. Thank you Vicki. I holidayed in Bamburgh about 10 years ago and that castle plus Lindisfarne were absolutely superb. I went to Warkworth and Alnwick as well, but not the other two.
Ahhhh!!! That Greggs drive thru, is just round the corner from my house!!! I could actually cry! Also being inspired by you're video of the Pedestrian Tyne Tunnel, I went for a bike ride down to it the other day for the first time! Even though I have lived here 21 years!
Just swap the terminal zero for a one (given many places close at the end of September anyway, even if restrictions are lifted by September, it's hardly worth reopening for a week or two).
I never realized the UK had so many castles that you could do six in one day. Now I know. Lindisfarne looks delightful and worth putting up with the causeway.
During the summer of 1978, I spent a month doing "All the Castles" by train. It is not very easy to do since they tend not to have consulted train timetables when deciding where to build castles (or is it tended to ignore where the castles were in building train stations?). I think we did about 60 in the month (almost all free with National Trust pass) with the biggies like Harlech, Conway, Caernarvon (yes, I liked Wales) plus a bunch around York to the Scottish Border and even the Cinque Ports, but my favorite was little Castell Coch near Cardiff (I know, not really a "proper" castle as it was built in the 19th century) with a great view as you are walking up to it. We had to go to Caerphilly Castle due to the engine and Coch was nearby.

That's a bit like the American woman, when visiting Windsor Castle, asked why it was built so close to the airport.
Brilliant video for a trainless video! Some beautiful and impressive castles there! Cheers Geoff for telling us about the viaduct, not doubt Paul & Rebecca will walk over it in the future!
Great challenge, but must admit the castles you visited are only the main one and just a dent in the castles of Northumberland, Dunstanburgh is another main castle but you also have Norham on the Scottish border, Harbottle, Spital, Etal, Ford, Rothley, Bothal, Morpeth just to name a few more but they are also more
We did Alnwick Castle on a Harry Potter tour. It was summer and open. They used exteriors in the movie. Then I did an inside tour. Their library is gorgeous, many very old books on the upper levels, modern books and the family Big Telly, good for movie night.
Hi Vicki - In my life so far I've been fortunate enough to have lived close-by to the 1st 2 castles visited, Warkworth (in the flat-roofed house just visible over the north-western wall) & Alnwick (in a flat along Bailiffgate, the road you approached it on). Hope you enjoyed your visit to historic Northumberland :)
Grumpy Old Guy Really enjoy Vicki Smiles of non train adventures. Waiting for Vicki Lego castles vs Geoff Lego station, maybe he can do viaducts. Look forward for the next teapot adventure.
Having driven to Lindisfarne myself, I have to shake my head at anyone who would ignore the tides table. I mean, it's the ocean! Do people really believe they can beat the ocean?
Great video as always, almost replicated a day we have planned for a holiday up north. We were missing Warkworth castle though so have added that onto our schedule. We also have an extra castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, on our route which looks nice but you might have missed with that swing inland.
Visited years ago. Timed it around 9.30/100.00am to get over to the island before the tide comes in, stayed on for the day. Off as the tide went back out. Once the early morning crowds disperse around the island, it's a nice peaceful day!
So strange seeing you in my stomping ground! Welcome to Northumberland! I grew up around Bamburgh - you get used to the idea that every tiny village has a massive castle in it...
If you'd gone down the side of Alnwick Castle on the same bit of road by the entrance, you'd get a great view from the bridge with the Percy Lion. The lion is famous because it is fierce and roaring with a straight tail, standing noble in front of the castle; except that it looks as if it had been suddenly discombobulated by someone shoving a broom handle up its arse. The tail fell off many years ago and all that has been left was the straight forming rod. I don't know if it has been repaired, but it's always worth a picture cos of how silly the poor cat looks. The Holy Island Causeway used to be a firing range in WW2. I remember as a kid collecting a bucket of bullets in the dunes facing the mainland. The bullets were all the business ends except for one casing, which was a bit odd, considering this was the receiving end of the range.
Wow! You should come to Gothenburg when Covid’s gone. We have heritage trams running on the same tracks as the modern ones. And we have a ruin from the 1500s, as well as a medieval one in neighbouring Kungälv.
6 castles so close and missed Dunstanburgh Castle @ Craster (between Warkworth and Bambrugh) although that is how Chillingham happened. The traditional county of Northumbria has 21 castles, so plenty of opportunity for drive through Greggs!

As Geoff said, it was known as the Cornhill branch (Coldstream station was actually in Cornhill, on the English side of the River Tweed). The line lost its passenger service in 1930 and, following a landside near Wooler, the section of the line between there and Alnwick was closed in 1953, long before Beeching.
