Lurking behind South Korea's high-tech and hard-working culture of capitalism are the world's highest suicide rates. We look at how young and old are affected, and some of the most extreme safeguards.
"Koreans live in a fiercely competitive society. You have to get things done quickly, everything is about money" says insurance salesman, Beon Sung Hun. In a country that has gone from poverty to power in a single generation, a suicide is said to take place every 33 seconds. Beon has considered suicide, but has since decided to undergo a fake funeral, in a bid for a new start. Dressed in 'robes of the dead', visitors are encouraged to visualise their friends and families laying flowers as their coffin is lowered, before they say goodbye in a suicide note and finally draw a picture of their tomb stone. "The culture of respect for life has recently suffered great damage" says Hong Jin Pyo of Korea's suicide prevention centre, blaming the drastic move from Confucianism to capitalism.

They might think korea has good culture. But pls keep in mind this, i hope u just come for traveling, enjoy here if u want, i 'd advised all mates to not get job, business ,study here. Professor would treat u as slave. In the dark sides , many people feel unhappy, working hectic, we can't relax at all whole life. Many people work 6 day ,Even 7days per 10~12 hours a week.. No matter where workplace we go to, it always has conflict with coworkers each other. And boss yell at us all the time. And it make me be fucking hectic. And the culture of ages sequence is also sucks. If i am older than you, you could never treat me comfortably. So that's why i like straya is they look easygoing, happy. Sometimes slow is another beauty. But i can't be certain about this. Cuz i'm not Aussie, and i just see them around surface, problem exists in everywhere.

I was in S.Korea for an exchange staying with a Korean foster family for 8 days. Their daughter (a year younger than me) attends school for about 9 hours (7am- 3/4pm) then attends extra classes similar to tuitions for about 4 hours. Then, she does self study/cram school till about 11pm. Arrives home and gets on the PC for her online English class. It had to be around midnight as the tutor was from the U.S so the time zone had to work. Imagine doing that all over again the next day for 10 years.

That's part of the problem--people need to cultivate gratitude in their lives more often. That's what I do every day--be thankful for the things that are going right for me. I have my health, my supportive family, a good number of friends, a roof over my head, running water and electricity, my savings. Going through a tough time right now looking for a job. I had a friend in college in NYC who was from Korea... he was a bit over 30 when i was 22... This guy was a total emotional wreck... and 1 day after we had a not so great presentation for a class project we was blaming himself and saying that he was worthless and a failure... and that bad grades will make his family ashamed of him...
When i heard this i was like "WTF is wrong with you... you are not worthless... so what if the professor didnt like our presentation that much... big deal... you are in a university to acquire knowledge, not grades... big deal if we get a B for the project instead of an A... i actually dont like straight A's... seems too perfect and not human..."
He also said that he didnt want to study Finance and that he was here in NYC because his family sent him here because NYC is the financial capital of America and that he needs to study here to get good grades and get a good job...
--- I asked him why would he go across a fucking ocean to a really dirty and fucked up city like NYC simply because his parents told him some bullshit that they believe to be true, which they probably heard from some other old Koreans with their own fantasies and misconceptions about what NYC and America are like...
He was shocked when i told him that these things like a International Student getting good grades and getting a job in NYC through company sponsorship are extremely rare... and that they would pay him less money if they actually sponsored him... he was shocked... he literary just exploded with emotion and anger... i calmed him down and started asking him about things that he likes and enjoys doing...
    ---
Turns out the guy likes to work with his hands and working with wood... I told him that its great and that he should pursue that craft rather than study Finance... His said that he didnt want to do it because there isnt much money in being a carpenter and building houses from wood because they are only built in rural areas... NOW I WAS SHOCKED... i told him why would he only focus on the bad or not lucrative areas of working with wood... I told him that he can make a lot of money simply by making furniture and other small wooden things if he approaches is from the *designed goods* perspective and focuses on the *Handmade aspect*... It was a good thing that i knew some stuff related to woodworking, design and what Koreans liked... So i had a long chat with him trying to kind of guide his mindset to a certain way of thinking... I told him that i have friends in Scandinavia that make a LOT of money because Koreans and Japanese like to buy Scandinavian designed furniture and other wooden things... he said "Yes, thats true"... SO i asked him, why cant you do the following, look at different things that Koreans and Japanese find attractive in terms of look and feel in Scandinavian designed furniture and stuff, BUT make using traditional Korean and Japanese woodworking techniques...like nailness/fastener-less joinery that Korean and Japanese carpentry is known for... I also told him to research traditional Russian and Slavic joinery and carpentry because those have a kind of fusion between Asian and Scandinavian traditions and techniques and he should position himself in the following way...
Scandinavian - Eurasian Design. Made in Korea, with traditional Korean and Japanese techniques...
    ---
The guy exploded in tears and fell on his knees and grabbed my hand and started bowing and touching my hand with his forehead... Needless to say i was totally shocked for like a second and then grabbed him by the shoulders and picked him off his knees... It was a SUPER AWKWARD moment...
We finished the class and went our separate ways... I think he went back to Korea after 1 more semester, because i have not seen him afterwards... I hope he is doing well... But Koreans need to learn to relax... not everything is about money... there are many different things that people can do and still make a good living... it all depends on your needs... fuck what society thinks... society doesnt pay my bills...

I work in japan as an English teacher and some of the Japanese English teachers to co-teach with fascinate me. Most have studied abroad and always tell me how they want to go back. I have some who say that they don’t consider themselves Japanese because they were immersed in another culture during university.
One of my teachers went to Korea to study Korean but picked up a lot of her English there too She has said she prefers their emotional intelligence over Japanese’s emotional intelligence, but she also mentioned that both Korea and Japan are behind on what if means to truly live your life and be happy. It was so refreshing to hear and see these teachers express their opinions about their experiences and I’m glad they are able to reach out to our students so that they can know that the world is so different outside of this bubble island.

Korea's suicide rate is about 4 times as high as where I like, the UK, and I feel like part of the reason for that is due to the high expectations. Cosmetic surgery is super common, and part of that seems to be in order to keep up with the extremely high beauty standards. Beauty seems to be highly valued, to the extent that a K-pop stars attractiveness almost seems more important than their talent and creativity. If ur unable to meet those standards, I can imagine it being quite depressing. That would be an amazing thing to implement... especially in colleges. I go to a college that is very competitive and runs their students into the ground. Our counseling center can't help all of the students and if they see you need more attention, you're referred outside of the school (and then you can only get help if you can afford it). We are the fraction of the size of a general American state school, and yet, we have the same suicide rate as them... There are so many college students struggling mentally here that even just a simple thing like that vending machine would definitely help.

This isn't individualism, individualism is choosing your own path no matter what society says. This is encouraging blind submission to money. Being is a slave of money is what is causing depression in reality.

The fake death thing might sound morbid but I feel like it can really help.
In an individualistic culture where there is a lack of support, there is no outlet. Sometimes when you can only internalize your problems, it can make things feel a whole lot worse. The act of writing a suicidal letter gives them a chance to let out their feelings while simultaneously remind them of people and things they cherish.
I've had my fair share of dark moments but whenever I felt like I went off the deep end I would think about my family and the people I care about. For those who leave, death is easy. It is always the people that are left behind that suffer. They take not only an emotional hit but also a physical hit. Death is also a tedious and expensive process. The cost of a funeral and burial can be crazy expensive. There's also a lot of administrative things to deal with. There's a lot of legal things that need to be taken care of; It's not just things like if the deceased left a will but also things like the contracts the deceased had signed, the place the person had lived and the payments they need to pay...
Rarely anyone who tries to kill themselves takes the time to understand how much pain and torture it will inflict. The wife of the farmer that killed himself if a perfect example. He thought he would be a burden but he left her to spend the rest of her days constantly regretting not laying in his arms before his death. He left her to fend against the world herself after they spent decades supporting each other. I'm sure she also had to deal with a lot of legal and administrative things after his passing too.

That Mapo bridge--the Bridge of Life/Death--should have really high railings/fences. It's been proven through sociological studies that bridges with tough barriers that prevent people from jumping off actually reduce the suicide rate. Suicide is a very impulsive move--it's not thought out and planned, for the most part. As a result, any small barrier that's put in the way slows down suicidal people, making them think through things. Very high fences on bridges are very cheap and effective. saying from pakistan, parents pressure on medical academics is rising as more seats for these colleges become harder, but its the common religion there that makes suicide much less than the usual, yet it doesn't mean there isn't any suicide. just recently, there were 3 cases: a man shot his daughter, then killed himself (his original plan was to shoot his wife because he assumed she was cheating, but instead shot his beloved daughter who took the bullet from her mom. then he killed himself). another case was of a man who killed his wife, and three children, then himself, and another of a woman who shot her daughters and herself. basically while killing themselves, they kill the ones along them to as in a way that "they won't suffer with us gone, as they are going with us". i know pakistan doesnt have the best reputation, but its a common thinking there that education is best and rare, which puts more pressure.

Most of them just prefer to not verbalize their issues specially to adults. Our school counsellor once literally uttered the words " Kids can't be depressed that's not possible " Out loud to all of us as if it's physically not possible to be diagnosed with mental illnesses if you're not an adult. After gettin my interest into kdrama and kpop, I have began to study their culture and history for a while now. This docu has showed the horror South Koreans face day by day (both the elder and the young generation are responsible - I think they should stop blaming each other) and it's totally disturbing and devastating (as for me who loves So.Kor.😭💔) I just hope more and more people will take action and change the mentality of the society rather than just live miserably.
