    Proper job mate!!!! Thanks for the video. I haven't done a flow coat yet but now I'm really looking forward to giving it a go. Just one question. I've only got a single 1000w IR lamp. How would I go about baking the clear after flatting using just one lamp?

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  6 лет назад +1

      you could just flat and then leave it for a few days to air through instead matty rather than trying to bake it out patience is key in this job

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  8 лет назад +1

      haha just years of doing the job its like second nature to me these days , but even i am still learning every day , for the booth these run a stand alone 150lt compressor that runs about 14cfm air delivery , the workshop runs on a 200lt compressor that runs around the same cfm , but if you dont paint and repair loads and loads in one day then one 200lt compressor on its own is enough to run a small setup, hope this helps

      +paul hills hi Paul on a lot of jobs regardless I still have a quick wet flat and polish even if it's just light , and no mater how clean the job there's always something in it but after years and years I've just found that way over prepping before and during the job is key , so I will now blow down panel wipe and tack before it enters the booth , mask then rack and wipe again once masked , before base application il use the air from the gun and tack off a third time and then tack between coats and blend coats and again before clear , it's ott but it's the way to get the most clean finish you can I find no matter what the setup or how fancy

    Hi Tony , if you were also painting the bonnet ,would you start in the same place(front right guard) and finish the bonnet last ?many thanks

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  6 лет назад

      honestly on a job like this id always take it off

    • @whitty132
      @whitty132 6 лет назад

      I have to drive the car to a hired booth , remove front and back bars and side skirts . So in my circumstances , removing the bonnet , and finding enough room and stands ,and being on my own ,removing the bonnet may not be the best option for me. Time is another factor ,as i need to also mask the car . Was thinking about overspray,and i thought if bonnet was painted first then front right guard ,then down the right side of car then,roof from right side pushing towards middle then run around the other side and finish roof,then back to right side to finish rear quarter ,then work around boot then left side and finish at the point where left guard meets bonnet.
      Maybe?
      Cheers Tony

      +Sameer Mohammed hi, Flow coating is the application of clear ontop of clear, it gives a smoother overall finsh straight from the gun and can also really help to increase the depth of gloss when working on higher priced jobs and retorations that you want to look there very best , its also great for cutom work where lines may need to ble cleared over from on colour to the next so they can be blocked down and then recoated to leeave that perfect feel to a panel

    If I wanted this same finish on my car what should I say to my local auto painter? I live in the us , I'd bring it to you if you were here lol

    • @TonysRefinishingTV
      @TonysRefinishingTV  8 лет назад

      +Nathan Machado lol thanks man, its called a flow coat , gives an amazing glass finish that you shouldn't need to touch after paint so the gloss levels are alot higher and because its lacquered twice the depth to the clear is really nice and makes colours pop

      +Tonys_Refinishing You referring to lacquer as a different substance to clear?

    • @TonysRefinishingTV

      +user12345 no lacquer and clear coat are the same thing working the automotive trade , just some people depending on where you are refer to it as one or the other

      Tonys_Refinishing Thanks, I did a 2 year refinishing course when I left school 15 years ago, but left after 8 months to work as a coach builder and take up welding, a lot of the latest fads, techniques, methods and way different people refer to things can be a bit confusing after being out the loop for a long time so to speak, I subbed to you yesterday, hopefully you'll be able to answer some questions for me in the future, get me up to speed with the latest techniques and what not, nice channel too, liking what I've seen so far.

    Dear sir, with better editing, you would improve your teaching methods. All you are doing with this video, for example, is showing the end result. Please do not take for granted, that you're subscribers know what you do, and how you do it, to achieve the final results. Some of us are rookies, new to the paint and body game. Please keep that in mind, for next time, where you can include some of the process BEFORE YOU CLEAR. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. CHEERIO!

    What is a Flow Coat?

    • @Dlambrt6257
      @Dlambrt6257 3 года назад +2

      A true flow coat is when you sand your clear down with 600 800 or whatever grit works and spray 1 coat of over reduced clear across it. Spraying 2 coats of clear at normal reduction will however produce similar results. Deeper glassy finish.

  • @darthvader8433

    May I suggest you don't refer to clear as "lacquer"? A beginner (such as myself) can find this confusing as early paints were known as lacquer, and spraying 2k over lacquer paint will not end well!
    I researched different types of paints by looking at the history and development and this had me stumped for a while!
    I can appreciate some clears used on timber furniture are a lacquer but this is different..
    Otherwise, love your videos!

      +Darth Vader the problem there is in some regions it's refered to as clear coat , and some as lacquer , also lacquer can be used as a last coat over 2k based direct gloss paints or used over dry 2k based paint is the need for blending solvent basecoat is used , I do try and keep the laquer and clear coat as plain as possible to cover all countries and regions watching

      I get what you mean mate , yes preps extremely important but at the same time if you don’t have previous experience on a gun then I wouldn’t attempt something like this , you need to start small and simple and work your way up
