Knifemaker Restore Antique Bone Cleaver

- I found another one of this huge cleaver in a flea market. Had to have it! This time I went for a more traditional handle construction while still making it my own way. Ended up making the handle with two wood species that I already matched together and really liked, olive wood and wengè and also added felt white/gray liner, simple but not plain! Decided to go for many and small (3mm) pins instead of fewer and bigger. This is always a nice challenge to keep everything lined up properly and I like it more for very large handles like this one.
Have you seen the other very similar cleaver I took care of?
• Insanely Big Butcher C...
I think this is the start of a new collection!
The aluminum one is bigger in size but a lot heavier as the blade itself is way thicker.
I really like this design, I know very little about these and this time again I can't read any makers mark but I have been told were used by butchers so the extra mass helps to cut thick stuff.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

Ind ex of operation and materials:
0:53 Cut old pins with metal cutting band saw. Most of the time pins are peened in old thigns like this one, it's easier to push them out by cutting off one side
1:24 Quick brush with steel wire brush and de grease with nitro solvent to take the loose stuff out
1:44 Remove rust and patina with steel wire wheel on the bench grinder
2:13 Easy matt finish achieved with a fine abrasive pad on the angle grinder. I like the old texture, these pads do not remove much material att all.
2:50 Grind new blade profile with 2x72 belt grinder
3:50 Round cornes with die grinder and stone bits
4:30 Flatten the tang to a decent degree so scales sits flatter
5:20 Grinding bevels on the slac of the 2x72 belt grinder
6:10 Dark patina finish on the blade with cold blue and oil
6:38 Buff edge with fine polishing coumpond and cotton wheel on the bench grinder
7:00 Mark pins position with calipers and dividers
7:22 Center punch pins holes
7:44 Drill 3mm pin holes
8:15 Felt liner preparation, for more details check this video: • Felt And Resin Liner /...
10:28 Cut scales materials to size with band saw
11:05 Grind angled edge between differen wood
11:40 First scales glue up with felt lines
12:12 Second scales glue up with more felt under the wood
12:45 Cut to rough size
13:00 Position first scale on the handle with ca glue and tape for quick and very reliable hole match drilling
13:40 Repeat for the other side, this way holes match perfectly
14:28 Ca glue bond is easy to break and leaves little residue thans to the tape
14:35 Roung shape cut of the scales
14:56 Shape the top part of the scales
15:14 Finish the top part of the scales up to 800 grit sandpaper
15:33 Final glue up with 90 min epoxy
16:04 Clean squeezeout with nitro solvent
16:22 Grind handle to shape with belt grinder
17:30 Hand sand up to 800grit
18:18 Wax finish, just an experiment as I am bored of always using boiled linseed oil!
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

You are the best! I am writin this comment from Turkey
Bro, love your content and the way everything is edited together! Keep doing work and getting at it 🤘
Pardon, but it is obvious that you do not understand the word"restore" It means to return as close as possible to "original" condition. What you did was "renovate" You decided that you know how to make a better bone clever than the people that made this one decades ago. Too many pins, wrong wood, resin impregnated cloth and the scales are the wrong shape. Sore 95% for the blade and -40 for not knowing what restore means.

Blackbeard's Tinder bio: "I am very friendly. Also i collect giant cleavers"
Wtf this is such a random comment
Run away, run away!
Hey I like knifes
I collect giant cleavers. I have them hanging all over my basement and the ones I have been able to get in pairs I have.
This is followed by the caption, "no one cheats on me!"
There's something about these projects that feel different from other restore jobs I follow. Other guys sand out every defect and polish every detail until it looks showroom new. But this here it's just cleaned up a bit. It still has an old look, like the years of neglect just didn't happen. I can dig that.
I’ve unsubscribed to most of the restoration channels I ever subscribed to; I couldn’t stand the insistence on a mirror finish on every single little thing. So I think I get what you mean. It still looks old but now it wouldn’t automatically be a health hazard to use it.
I seccond that, its like he retains its soul.
The problem I have with trying to keep the pitting is it can be a deeper source of rust in later years. Buff that shit out for the long term health of the blade!
@@Smaug84 ehhhh a good soak in vinegar and some steal wool will eliminate the current rust. And a quality coat of oil and proper maintenance will prevent future rust.
@@jonstensrud1603 Not when it forms under the handle.
I like the way you don’t have any music in the background😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Just listening to the sound of the tools doing their thing is oddly soothing.
@@bitcheslovecannons5073 yeah
Natural sound is the best
Now that's a bone cutter. Great job on the handle. Definitely a zombie killer. Well done Sir 👏
Great work, as always. These videos are so satisfying to watch. Thank you!
beautiful finish, as always, it's amazing how seeing a video from one of your favourite restorers can perk up your day. thank you.
The wood handle is 10x better than the cast one you made 👌.
GREAT job sir 👍👍
I see a theme beginning here.
And I have ZERO problem with that.
Dieses Fleischerbeil braucht den großen Handgriff mit dem Widerlager für die Hand, damit beherrscht der Fleischer das Beil mit einer Hand bei seiner Arbeit. Eine schöne Arbeit die du gemacht hast.
This meat cleaver needs the large handle with the abutment for the hand, so the butcher can control the cleaver with one hand at his work. Nice work that you did.
beautiful knife handle

@Adam Malinowski ya caught me ;)
@Adam Malinowski I haven't in years besides like a month of classic when it first came out.

Good idea with the food saver bags. Two Thumbs Up. 👍🏻👍🏻
Best ASMR video ever.
Ahh you missed such an opportunity of making a bone cleaver with a bone handle! 🤣😍
My question will go unanswered for eternity. Why did 1.7K put a thumbs down? What was it that irked them so? Mad because he did something wrong or just angry because they would never in their life time be able to rejuvenate such an item?
Subbed without hesitation, you are a master at what you do.

I love your work. Keep up the good show. I like the fact you restore the blades to a "usable" condition and do not fill the old blemishes. It leaves the knives and blades you "recreate" their former character. They in themselves become the work of art. Nice job! Keep it up!
But the fact is that knives with so many deep rust pits are unsanitary. It is a nice object to look at not to use.
@@besenwieslersepp1011 boohoo.
I love this! I think I will get one for my former wife and her fiance (who met while we were married) for a wedding present as an act of reconciliation. I can show my gratitude by a nice boat trip to the middle of the lake, and introduce them to their present. We can then have a smile and officially 'bury the hatchet'!
Love it! I like the fact that you didn't try to make it shine like a new mirror, or add a lot of brass to the handle. You kept it simple....like it was originally designed.
Nice work. I like the handle
I can respect a man that works with grind sparks flying straight into his eyes! ,LOL!!! ,Great job bud !👍🏼
I absolutely love it. I've never seen a cleaver like that one but I am now on the hunt.
Love the look of the blade much more than mirror polish. The patina gives it a “working” finish and a good look
You are the fastest bench grinder ive ever seen!
This guy has got some ( serious) skills...
Your descriptions are amazing. Thank you. New subscriber here.
Beautiful job my friend ...
My favorite of your restoration videos so far. The knife ended up keeping so much of that beautiful character that usually gets stripped away. For a second I thought the handle was going to get cut down, and my heart started racing, but I'm very pleased to have been wrong.
A true restoration video.
That handle is a thing of beauty
Two great blades 👍
I really like your repair
LOL. I could have used that chopper last night when I was cutting a huge squash.Excellent work👍👍👍. Thanks for sharing.
Nice wood choice!
Beautiful work! And so satisfying to observe! Thank you for all you do!!
Чёткий топор. Рукоятка выше всяких похвал, как обычно. Моё почтение прямым рукам из плеч.
You are really skilled, and i love your choice for the handle !
Amazing restoration
I’m a cleaver lover for sure. That cleaver is a beast. Nice restoration 👍👍👍. I’m always looking for old cleavers. Good grab !!!
Another awesome Bone Clever restoration !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bone cleaver sounds like a warriors nickname
You did it very well and above all you didn’t change the shape .
That is a very nice handle
I love how you don't mind using power tools. I'm the same. I use them as much as possible.
GREAT WORK, BLACK BEARD!!!! nice bone cleaver.
Beautiful just beautiful
That the most massive cleaver I've ever seen! Great job.
I love whatever the sound is in the backrground when things are sped up that sound like some kind of ghastly howls. I'm assuming its cars and trucks passing by outside but its great.
A person could create a bit of mischief with that one!
Great video!
I hope the Predator appreciates your restoration.
i love your technique on how you restore bladed..
Beautiful work, especially the handle looks nice, perfect restoration, appreciate your hard work.
Nicely done I want two
Forged in Fire: Knife or Death - here we come!
Lovely work really like the little pins in this one 👍
Can't unsee the phallus-shaped handle.
Was thinking the same thing. Classic dick and balls 😆🤣😂
Once again you make these Handles look like they have always been there. High Class from Trash..
Very nice work
Not sure why anyone would give this a thumbs down. Excellent skills you have, well done!
the Dunning-Krueger effect. People get jealous of mad skills they dont and never will have.We have a ship load under 45yo in the USA walking around and making negative comments on chit they could NEVER do themselves . I would be surprised if they didnt run their upper rectal orifices like they did here.
You make the nicest handles!
Damn that's a huge blade
I wish I could wash dishes that fast.
that cleaver looked amazing before the restoration no lie.
Eccezionale come sempre! È sempre un piacere vedere la notifica di un nuovo video caricato 👍

fine job sir.....Im learning a lot of little details from your channel, thanks.
good work brother!
That is so awesome! Great job als always mate!
I love you work👍
Nice. Love your videos
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁🥳😘😘😘😘😘😘!!!
The original handle had a very specific shape for a very good reason, shame you missed this!
You mean the exposed metal under the handle ?
Whats wrong with the one he made. It looks very similar just more elegant. Also it wasnt getting much use with the old blade so why keep it?
@@damon2692 that was shrinkage of the wood due to age and bad care . No one leaves metal like that sticking out of the bottom of a butchers bone cutter..thats a pinch point. I have seen people do it and i wouldnt buy it or use it without that being a priority to get rid of.
Wow! È stupenda!
I need one of these. I’m a butcher and I have problems with some neighborhood kids!! Manly the kid though.
great job, love the handle. Dr G
That was very impressive I love the handles
👍👍👍Хорошая работа, посмотрел доконца, потом стал смотреть комментарии и очень удивился...
Great work black! As alwais! 👍👍🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹 see you soon! Have a good blade🔥🔥🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Another cracking job, thanks for the video
I really like your stuff. Again awesome.
Good Job 👍👍👍
Ich really enjoy to See you using Other Tools you restored before 👍🏻. Like the Metal Cutter . Keep Up the good work 😉
I like your use of "Ich" in an otherwise English sentence 🤘👍😆
2:48 Begins sharpening.
3:27 Loses vision in right eye.
Great job
This is a swordfish clraver. See similar in sicily.
Love the way he grinds towards his face .
wayne llewellyn that’s what I said. Gotta be using a face shield.
His "Safety Squint" game must be strong.
I'll never be low in iron... Wait, does it work that way?
Nicely done BBP, I enjoy how bring these blades back to useable condition with what you have available. Half these naysayers have likely never touched a grinder let alone done anything remotely close to this.
Unfortunately you are right. Loads of naysayers make comments based on ignorance. They think they know better but in reality they do not. Its called the Dunning-Krueger effect.
half these naysays never butchered an elk.....or anything else for that matter..
It looks like something a giant robot would use
Cool it looks like a dwarfs melee weapon.
Excellent job! Been following your channel now for a while and love your work!
A lot of people go watch these weird asmr videos of some really weird shit. Not me, I come straight to your channel the process of these restorations are so relaxing.
Another great video. Awesome as always 👍
That’s a beast of a knife bro ! Good stuff....
Wow ce couperet est MASSIF! Beau travail!
Damn glad you are not a serial killer lol. Nice job on the bone crusher's handle
I’m not gonna lie, I totally enjoy the fast forward. Oddly satisfying to watch. I probably have no patience or something. Anyway thanks great vid
It's the sound. The sounds of sanding or hammering in fast forward just tickles the middle of my brain.
i'd like to see a lanyard hole on this big knife
Just my opinion, but I like it when it has been completely restored to mirror finish. Just me I guess. You still did a good job on the handle and blade, though.
Hello beautiful resut bravo big big like
Nice work. 👍🏻👍🏻
