As of 2024, localization still requires human effort. Especially in anime, the number of words needs to be adjusted. Also, the Japanese language in anime is very complicated, with unique expressions and abbreviated forms. However, that does not mean that it is okay to change the expressions in the original work. In short, only those who like the work and want to watch it should watch it. An anime about chickens fighting and saving the world will be announced soon. So the matter is about interpretation, not translation. But these activist, who apparently don't even know that, are traying to push their own beliefs and politics into their localizations, when all you have to do is keep the intension or pragmatics of a piece of dialogue, even if I am changing what is said literally. This activism disrespects the art of language and paves the road to AI even more

They are changing the original meaning to be something else to serve their agenda. They are stealing the characters and art to use for their own story by changing the translation. But. You'll be given credits based on behavior and rent everything, own nothing and be happy. Abd hard labor can be done with machines. Nearly all the huge farms are all done by machines. I can think of a single instance of localization that was not done with the intent to insert one's own politics, but it still wasn't very good. In Persona 4, the player character can romance Naoto, "the Detective Prince," who is in fact a girl (coming to terms with this is her character arc). If one does this, in the final Social Link event, the English translation has Naoto as the protagonist if he would prefer that she speak with a higher pitched voice. I am certain that this is an attempt to convey a concept that doesn't exist in the English language. I'm pretty sure that Naoto really asks the protagonist if he would prefer that she use "watashi" rather than "ore" when referring to herself. For those who do not know, "watashi" is the basic first-person personal pronoun; however, in informal settings, a *male* might use "ore," but it would be grammatically incorrect for a female to do this. Naoto had been trying to pass as a boy for most of the game, even wearing the boys' school uniform. She was probably using "ore" rather than "watashi" throughout the game as part of this. However, if the player character romances her, she definitely understands, and wants, to be the girl in the relationship and therefore asks the protagonist if he would prefer that she not use that pronoun (probably feeling him out about whether and how he sees her as a woman). In English, the first-and-second-person personal pronouns are, unlike third person singular, ungendered. A translator would be unable to accurately translate this dialog because it is dependent on a concept that exists in Japanese, but not in English. Whoever did the translation, therefore localized it by substituting dialog that that, while not accurate as a matter of formal equivalence, would convey the "gist" of what was being communicated (dynamic equivalence). Of course, the whole problem with this is that it was entirely unnecessary. The game allows the player to play as a Japanese high school student. The player attends classes that (loosely) simulate the Japanese classroom experience; the player interacts with his uncle and niece in a way that simulates Japanese home life; the player even forms a social link with a fox that might actually be a friendly kitsune (or is otherwise just a super-intelligent and pious fox) at the Shinto shrine by doing stuff around town to fulfill people's ema requests, for goodness sake. The people who are interested in playing Persona 4 are interested in Japanese culture and play the game to experience a Japanese culture simulation (which, I believe, is why the Persona series is significantly more popular than the Shin Megami Tensei series from which it was spun off - the latter has the dungeon crawl without the Japanese daily life visual novel). These sorts of people (let's call them "weebs") *want* to have the watashi-ore distinction be part of the game *because* it is so essentially Japanese. There was no need to try to make it more familiar to westerners, because the cultural difference is an integral part of their enjoyment of the game. Anyway, one should know that she done messed up when the consumer base trusts Skynet more than her. She really ought to shave her head, apologize and disappear for a while to reflect.

I bought an anime on Blu-ray that I was mildly interested in and got on a discount. As I started watching it in subs, I noticed the translator in chief was credited to *Katrina Lenoudakis.* Now I am hesitant to watch the series in dubs
Get rekt'd wokalizers
The Hollywierd writers strike fucked over voice actors. Now add the A.I. this will ends voice actors for good
Mel you’re awesome and give hope to conservative gamers like myself. God bless you.
Recently an English translation team actually ruined an entire game called Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
The industry already exploits animators and mangakas as much as they can. Accepting the further adulteration of their precious source material on top of the compromises they concede for the sake of the anime adaptation... That's just wrong.
what would be good is if the AI uses the original VAs voice in the translation for anime and games.
Thanks for the video. I still rather read a fan translation of a manga than an official paid localizer who has no respect for the creator's work just so they can inject their personal politics and insult the fans' intelligence.
"Look at these doughnuts!" *is holding rice balls, human translator for Dragon Ball Z
I just want to say that you've become one of my favorite youtubers, Mel.
Saw a little dog/ puppy walk in room beginning video😊
Love your videos 👍
They should have hired me to do this. Would never add any of the garbage that the woke lefties want.
“Queerdos” first I have heard of this name. I like it 😄
You reap what you sow , would be my answer to those woke clowns.
I love that hairstyle.
if they dont do their job good, they will be fired
"Don't let the machine garble up the translations, let us garble up the translations to push our woke agenda!"
That list at 12:40 is about 110% accurate. What the Woketivists will demand is that the A.I. be reprogrammed to suit them.
I'm sure the manga localizers don't do their process on non hetero content. I bet their focus on is hetero male characters and themes only.
They/them got replaced by it/that thing.
How are they gonna mess up SNOOP DOGG’s “Dimensional Seduction” ? 😂
This is just ridiculous, and I'm glad that they're getting pushed back normally. I'm not for Ai, but in this case, I'll gladly make an exception
I cannot wait to sign up to Novelus
It's like a tornado 🌪️ you carnt control
Remember AI translation will only get better and the woke translations will only get worse
AI for translating authors is probably the best way to preserve the voice, style, and meaning of the author.
They did it to themselves.
This was inevitable. The second they went after anime, Japan HAD to protect its cultural icons in whatever way it could.
So long as they translate it and have a trusted English speaking person go over the work, it’s a viable alternative.
may god bless you shogakukan keep up the good push back
