As someone who played the classic Tomb Raider games as a teenager during the 90’s, I think the newer Tomb Raider games are just alright, but they don’t compare to the classics. I bought a “Tomb Raider Remastered Collection” shirt to help keep the memory of classic Lara Croft alive, and I am hoping we will eventually get remasters of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and Chronicles.
I think it’s more interesting to have a reluctant hero. Lara isn’t necessarily a good character or a hero but she ends up stopping the baddies that are in her way. I did enjoy the rebooted games but the stories are fan fiction.
Laraboot become the Tomb Raider in.......................................................NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS. We want Classic Lara, not this imposter masquerading as the iconic Queen.
Lara Croft has history had roughly a 60-40 ratio when it comes to male-female fans, which for an iconic and lucrative character is incredible. There's a reason why both men and women, boys and girls love her character, and the trick really is to make a version of Lara women/girls will love, because the reason men/boys love her is more or less for the same reason women/girls do (separating the age groups since age plays a factor). Make her attractive, smart, witty, and badass. Make her larger than life the same way James Bond or Indiana Jones are. She's not normal and she's not relatable, so let her be the female wish fulfillment, escapism equivalent of Conan the Barbarian. You cannot be her or obtain her, so let her always be an arm's length away from the player/viewer.
INTJ- Tomb Raider 1-2 taught me what traps were and I know how to spot them from every game I play form that point forward. also, major crush on the woman Lara Croft, she was badass and got shit done. oh and that was the first time I learned what a Desert eagle was.
Lara isn’t supposed to be in a relationship, unconfident, insecure, or anything like that. Let’s leave all that for the side characters while she solves puzzles and flips around shooting extinct monsters.
Here’s the thing, I don’t mind when badass characters are shown in a new way, when more nuances are added to them (Kratos in the new GoW is an example). But, if you have a character like Lara, an almost sociopath girl who is basically a confident hot mess that lives for the thrill of adventure, you NEED to do it in a way that works. Not by adding past trauma that would of course change her as a character, but maybe by adding to THAT already established character a certain life altering event that changes the way she looks at life. Like, I don’t know, make her meet an old explorer that lived for the thrill of adventure during their younger days and have them maybe be alone, feel regretful and empty ‘cause they spent so much time looking for treasures that, in the end, they were left with nothing and no one by their side. Have Lara’s view of life contrast with the consequences of actually living a life like that ‘till the end. That’s how a character can grow, that’s how a character can change without it feeling out of place. Hell, you could even play the love card by having the old explorer say something like: “I spent all these years hunting for treasures, that I missed the only one that truly matters in life… love”
It's because modern fiction has been turned on it's head. "Heroes" used to be idolized, heroic characters with a few flaws that make them relateable. *Now* they are either completely flawed so much so that they reflect an anxious insecure society, with no more "heroic" traits beyond the stereotypicall "just be who you are" note, *or* a complete Mary Sue with no flaws whatsoever. Because today "being represented" is more important than "being inspired". "Old" media told you that "anyone can be a hero if they stick to the good values of society and work hard to do better." "New" media tells you that "you are already perfect just the way you are, and anyone who doesn't see that is evil".
Woke DEI formula: 1. Reboot beloved IP 2. Insert current political ideology 3. Remove 'offensive' material from IP that fans loved 4. Promote reboot as an improvement upon the original 5. Pay influencers and reviewers to approve product 6. Blame fans for rejecting reboot
Lara Croft no longer enters a cave and shoots some bats and squirrels while looking for treasure. Now it's all "Lara Croft raids the wet cavern of meat," "Lara Croft dives into the rift of roast-beef," "Lara Croft encounters the Sapphic beaver." And so on. For a totally different audience.
I'm so tired of Lara Croft having to get beat down to figure herself out. The Lara I grew up with was intelligent, an adventurer, can get shit done by herself and with help, puzzle solver, resourceful and a stunning. They presented her as a woman that if you didn't have your shit together, she might not even talk to you.
That trailers is a colossal insult to Tomb Raider, they seriously need to get to know who she actually is by playing the OG trilogy not the reboot, did they do any research at all? Gosh there infuriating
It’s starting to become disheartening that these new animated adaptations, reboots, or even “new” shows are more likely than not misses and just dog shit
The problem is that a lot of people in Hollywood want to do their own movies and shows but instead of creating something new they have to take an IP to do it. It happened with the Halo series and the Rings of Power series, and now it seems to be happening with this Netflix Tomb Raider series, they don't care how many IPs they destroy as long as they get their agendas out.
6:58 so right, I didn’t care to see Lara in romantic light or definitely in the movies. It was super cringe, because I’m not use to seeing her trying or someone trying to hook up with her. 😬 The reboot stuff is… “alright”… if I can say, but nothing compared to the classics. The Legend trilogy was the last hope of the franchise before it fail into a black hole, and even it was a hard stretch on the classics/Lara.
I think the idea of Lara getting from traumatized woobie to a bad ass adventurer was progression Rhianna Pratchett had in mind for her but since she hasn't been involved with the series for years, the new writers just stuck with the former version of the character because that's the one the execs at Squeenix and and Embracer find easier to market, since the target audience of teenage boys and men in stage of arrested development are terified of strong confident women.
People who say that the reboot games did ok (which we know isn't true as you said), always neglect to mention to that the moment the Sarkeesian reboot happened in 2012 the merch, comics and movies tanked as well. The fandom deserves a lot for respect for standing their ground from 2012 tot present day for not financially supporting anything reboot related, something all the other fandoms should & could learn from. Cause the sad truth is also that a lot fandoms gradually went along with the changes to what ever ip the liked.
I don’t think having a romantic interest would compromise the original character as long it was just a casual relationship or a fling that comes into territory when she just a loner because that alone makes her attractive the first place. But Crystal dynamics pretty much ruined her though that’s a fact.
with the movies they sort of try to frame it as Terry was similar to her in the fact that you can see that he'd be down to go tomb raiding with her, and she starts entertaining the idea that just maybe she can pair up with this guy whos as much of an adventurer as her, but he shows that he does it for the profit more than the thrill and she offs him to keep Pandora's Box lost so nobody could try to use it, she does it for the thrill but only takes the harmless stuff for her collection.
Sometimes I wonder if they even have any idea how difficult it is to make someone who doesn't like the video dislike it. Because in most cases people just ignore the video or don't watch it until the end. Commenting then is even more difficult. Therefore, when the number of dislikes for a video is greater than the number of likes, this speaks volumes about how people are really reacting to what was shown.
They don't want the original character. They want the name recognition to tie to their fan-fiction.
That's how they operate. They aren't creative enough to come up with something new, so they hijack an established property with a built in fan base, and then bastardize it to their twisted whims.

Why bother calling it Tomb Raider if she doesn't raid tombs anymore?
As someone who haven't completed the OG games I'm glad that content is still fresh for me despite the franchise having been run into the ground.
"Old" media told you that "anyone can be a hero if they stick to the good values of society and work hard to do better."
"New" media tells you that "you are already perfect just the way you are, and anyone who doesn't see that is evil".
Woke DEI formula:
1. Reboot beloved IP
2. Insert current political ideology
3. Remove 'offensive' material from IP that fans loved
4. Promote reboot as an improvement upon the original
5. Pay influencers and reviewers to approve product
6. Blame fans for rejecting reboot
7. Call fans racists, sexists, and bigots.
8. Repeat.
People at Crystal Dynamics must have a ryona fetish.
That trailers is a colossal insult to Tomb Raider, they seriously need to get to know who she actually is by playing the OG trilogy not the reboot, did they do any research at all? Gosh there infuriating
Netflix ruined Castlevania for me. I can imagine how Tomb Raider fans feel...
They shat on all the Vania characters. Made it bad fan fiction.
It’s starting to become disheartening that these new animated adaptations, reboots, or even “new” shows are more likely than not misses and just dog shit
The real Lara Croft died in The Last Revelation.
Truth
Facts
The problem is that a lot of people in Hollywood want to do their own movies and shows but instead of creating something new they have to take an IP to do it. It happened with the Halo series and the Rings of Power series, and now it seems to be happening with this Netflix Tomb Raider series, they don't care how many IPs they destroy as long as they get their agendas out.
Thanks for monitoring this.
God Bless you Wonderful Melonie
6:58 so right, I didn’t care to see Lara in romantic light or definitely in the movies. It was super cringe, because I’m not use to seeing her trying or someone trying to hook up with her. 😬
The reboot stuff is… “alright”… if I can say, but nothing compared to the classics.
OG lara is the best! I've just done the remastered. Exactly how i remember them as a kid.
They literally turned a strong, independent woman who men like to a weak, dependent girl.
