  • So, today we are out and about walking along the Stroudwater Navigation. The canal is located in Gloucestershire, England. It links the town of Stroud to the River Servern. The canal was opened in 1779, which was mainly used to cargo coal along it's 8 miles of water. It has a total of 12 locks and a rise of 102 ft. The canal was decommissioned in 1954. The Stroudwater canal, is the perfect place for a leisurely walk at any time of the year.
    Thanks, for walking with me.

Thanks for braving the weather to bring us this wonderful piece of work. There's something very joyful about watching and hearing the rain while I am cosily indoors. This is the other end of the Cotswolds for me so I rarely get up that way. The canalways of England are one of the most fascinating things about the country. I think it is generally forgotten how these were the motorways of their time and they are still in daily use. Walking along a canal or river tow path is one of the joys of being here. Thank you for this video.

Good Evening, Jago. Thanks for the comment. I am glad you enjoyed this walk especially as it is a little different from what I usually post on the channel. Yes, our waterways are a bit of a national treasure. Sometimes, it is nice to just walk along a towpath and get away from it all. Have a fab weekend. OAAW

Thank you for this. I’m a great fan of the English canal system and all things narrow boating and I subscribe to several narrow boating vlogs. I think there is a parallel in some ways between tootling along in a narrowboat at 3-4 miles an hour and a quiet walk along a towpath somewhere. You can’t rush things on a canal. It is what it is. Your walk here symbolizes a simpler time before the railway came along and destroyed all this. It was a hard and dangerous life with little romantic about it if you made your life working the canals, but thanks to many volunteers and the public desire to keep these canals open for pleasure we can now use them for boating, walking and cycling.

Good Evening, John. Very well said! There is something about canals, maybe it is because they always seem so peaceful & tranquil, and even more so on a rainy day like this. All the best to you. OAAW

Sorry I'm late to the party, OAAW. So many things going on recently. You know, the sound of the rain on the umbrella and the trickling water is top-tier ASMR material. I saw a video recently of a couple who live on a narrowboat in England, perhaps narrowboats could traverse this course onto the River Severn also. It's certainly a nomadic yet cozy lifestyle. Thanks for sharing your walk with us! I hope you're well and have a great day!

Good Morning, Michael. Absolutely no need to apologise, I know you are a busy chap, with a lot going on and to take care of also. It is good to hear from you, all the same tho, believe it or not, I was just thinking about you when you commented, it’s a small world, hey! On paper, I would imagine that course would be possible, but I’m not entirely sure. I know a chap who locally lives on a narrow boat full time, I shall ask him that very question and then let you know the answer. As always, thank you for accompanying me on another walk. It must be getting on for late afternoon or early evening at your end, so I wish you a relaxing evening. All the best to you. OAAW

@@OutandaboutWalkingGood morning there, OAAW. Awfully kind of you. About narrowboats, I think they're only permitted to stay in one place for 2 weeks. Some of those narrowboats are quite nice with complete amenities for day to day living. With real estate prices the way they are, I can understand the appeal to escape the terrors of mortgages. In both the US and Japan, the equivalent of the narrowboat is the recreational vehicle though RV parks are much more a thing in the US. Have a great day ahead!

@@michaeltichael Hello to you. I can imagine, that is the case, as I know that the chap frequently moves around. Oh, the answer to your previous question is yes the River Severn can be reached from this particular canal, however it may well not be practical or even safe for a narrowboat to try to do so. I can also see the attraction, it must be amazing to wake up each morning to some breathtaking views as well as peace & quiet, and like you say, it may well be a much cheaper way of living too. Personally, I think I might prefer RV living over narrowboat living but only just tho! Enjoy the latter half of your day, Michael. All the best for now.

OAAW~ OK, that was fun! I was introduced on RUclips to narrowboats a couple years ago. It seems like such a calm, peaceful life. Especially for someone who loves the water. I enjoyed the walk, sitting on my second floor porch, in the early morning of a practically perfect day. Thank you for sharing!
