I use both! I use notion for it's databases such as habit trackers and recipes, and I use obsidian for my class notes! Think of it like this, notion is a bullet journal and obsidian is a notebook!
As a person with ADHD, I went with the basic obsidian, because Notion with so many options, I can get distracted easily from the tasks I have set out to do for that day, week, etc.
I spent so much time making my notion pretty that once i got out of that hyperfocus i just abandoned the thought of actually taking notes. Obsidian might be better for me too ToT
Yes, I tried using notion but never ended up sticking to it because I always got really overwhelmed with all the possible choices, and trying to make it perfect, I will give a try to obsidian now
One thing not mentioned in this video: Notion is quite difficult to set up properly. Lots of templates, tables etc. are simply too time consuming to set up properly. Obsidian by contrast is much simpler. Markdown might take some time to get used to but it's easily accessible. I've tried both, had to give up notion. Maybe in the future if I have to.
That's quite cool of you to use Obsidian. I couldn't understand how to use Obsidian with all those complex features, can't even create a toggle easily like Notion. Tried Obsidian but it's not beginner friendly, just way too complex for me.
@@aominedaiki3838 Yeah bro toggle is the reason I can't leave Notion. Toggle is best feature in Notion. Hope they will add it in obsidian they I may think about it
@@digsrough8422 I might be a bit late on this but I tried obsidian tomorrow and it has the toggle feature just got to settings > Editor > Turn on Fold Indent and Fold Heading
I was also all about Notion when I first discovered it back in 2018 (I even thought of making RUclips videos about it, I wish I had) and moved everything over there. But all the lagging and waiting and awkward offline mode made me not want to use it for everything anymore. I also then started worrying about privacy, though I trust it more than other apps. I remember thinking I wanted an app that could make notes that are files I could access in my device but that was still a note app, and wishing it worked with markdown, and that was capable of working completely offline but able to sync smoothly, and I even thought about wanting something that was smarter about linking notes, although I wasn't sure how would it look like. And then, just as I was about to seriously go back to Evernote, I found out about Obsidian. It's the perfect app for me, I've even been into purple a lot lately. It's everything I wanted from a notes app and more. Then I decided I would still use Notion for some things (mostly for sharing stuff). I'm really happy with Obsidian, I just hope it'll keep being updated and never stop being cool.
Obsidian has improved very much in last 12 months, I loved it then, love it even more now. I don't use phone app but it's there too as well as much better preview etc so you don't need to switch the view (which I solved before with custom theme/css snippet). Also section collapsing is super neat new thing I just discovered, totally essential
Great video. Short, clear and focused. As soon as you mentioned images being essentially public in Notion, and storage not being local, I made my decision. Wish I'd watched your video before hours of other overstuffed comparison videos. Thank you.
Great video! As you've said, no such thing as a perfect tool. I'm trying to solve different issues with databases, studies and journaling, so I might as well try both!
Great Video. Since I am a lone ranger, I use Notion for database type things, like recipes, workouts, resources etc... and I use Obsidian for knowledge management. Like taking notes from RUclips Videos, blog articles, and sorting them into atomic notes when I get around to it. Notion has an app, and it is pretty powerful, but Obsidian is great for atomic notes.
@@julianapegas2043 now that Obsidian has an app, i am putting more into Obsidian. I still use Notion for Task management, and Database stuff. However, I may even change that!
The only reason to use notion would be if you use the collaboration features. Otherwise, obsidian is the best tool (for me atleast). Markdown files mean future proofing, you can edit the same database with any editor you like. Can be synced easily using git, because plain text. Offline support. Mature plugin system, things like vim mode are awesome. Full custom css support. And most importantly, I think the devs mentioned somewhere that if obsidian company dies tomorrow, they will make the app open source. But if something like notion closes, how will you export your data?
I'm a writer and I use obsidian. It's just so amazing that I can link my ideas and notes together in a way that is really easy for me to read. Plus I like the UI and customisation options much better than Notion. Also, Obsidian has TONS of plugins that help with absolutely ANYTHING! You can search up the most random thing you want and it's there! The plugin i use and love the most is the 'timeline' plugin - it lets me make and customise a timeline for my worldbuilding which is INSANELY useful to me. Obsidian's canvas and graph tool are also really helpful for visualising things. I might start to use it for class notes as well beyond my personal projects.
I've used notion and OneNote for a long while. But recently I discovered obsidian, and hands down it's really good. Obsidian being Ulta light, almost portable, no logings made this program hit the spot to me. Markdown is not a big issue, it's easy and fun to learn, it's just about being used to
This was a really great comparison, thank you! I went for Obsidian. I have tried Notion, but it made me incredibly frustrated. It doesn't work with my brain. When I discovered Obsidian, I could almost feel my autistic brain crackle with excitement! I'm not a programmer and have no experience coding, but I have used Ulysses and Bear since 2015 and am comfortable with the most basic markdown, which makes the jump over to Obsidian less intimidating. I also like that with Obsidian, I can easily see every single note I have made through the graph view. With Notion, I kept having this feeling of not knowing where my notes went/lived... I couldn't get a proper bird's eye view and that bothered me. Then there's privacy; I'm just not okay with the lack of it in Notion.
Despite my daughter's strong advocation for Notion, I find its learning curve a bit too steep for me. Having used RemNote for quite a while, I find Obsidian easy to learn and use, especially its backlinking features. The vast amount of contribution from the Obsidian user community to make the tool more effective is impressive. I have begun toying with Obsidian for personal knowledge management, after Life Preview became available.
I'm trying Obsidian right now because I'm wasting too much time "architecting" my Notion setup. Really the catalyst was a Tiago Forte video talking about the notetaking archetypes and thought I'd try something more on the gardener's side. Offline access also matters to me (although sync is a priority and I don't like that Obsidian's sync is behind a paywall). That said, I have my eye on other "gardeners'" tools. Logseq has many similarities to Obsidian, and Capacities is like a mix of Notion and Obsidian. Still I'll stick with Obsidian for now because I'm liking how I can work a lot with the keyboard, how customizable the UI and shortcuts are - and mobile apps are available now lol
It’s a very important a tough topic as granularity issues occurs in any softwares I like to use notion , agenda , obsidian , mymind, MindNode and im currently testing to add eloquent plugin in the knowledge grabbing system
I really like Obsidian, but for me its a big weakness that I cannot easily export my notes as pdf. When I do, the layout of my notes is completly destroyed, since it cant "translate" many things such as my highlights or the Backlinks. I dont have any tech background whatsoever and am now in a dilemma situation which app to use for my university notes. Notion is more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion, good to track things, and i can export pdfs. Obsidian offers the interesting and unique feature of creating my own encyclopedia.
With Obsidian you are responsible for your data. You can back up your files using Google Drive, Dropbox, or an external drive. There's also the option of using Obsidian Sync.
Será que já tem forma efetiva de substituir o Obsidian pelo Notion? Pra se manter num software só? Pq eu aqui também ainda só sei usar os dois, mas minizar a variedade ajuda.
