Same! I daily my C5 and the only place I can't get into is one particular Starbucks and the world's worst Kroger's that I don't want to go to anyway. Steep driveways filled with potholes and broken concrete. Not risking that. The Starbucks would probably total the car it's so bad.

I've been daily driving my c5 corvette for the past month or two and have loved it. When I try I get about 22mpg driving around town and 31 on highway. I know it's not great compared to new cars but considering I was previously driving a Silverado that got about 15mpg city so I think the c5 is amazing. Only real problem is I've encountered many areas where I wouldn't think I would scrape but I do.

As a 20 year old college student I completely agree with everything here. I go to school in Louisiana and when I knew I’d be moving south I started looking for a rwd sports car. I don’t drive it every day which helps with gas, but there has never been a time where I wished I had some other car. Of course I could always use more seats but for short drives you can fit 3-4 people pretty easily lol. Cargo space has never been an issue, I can grab tons of groceries and fit them all with no issues. There is one other guy with a C5 on campus (who I’m friends with of course lol) and in a world full of mustangs, Camaro as, and chargers it’s super cool to have something different. I love every second of it, I genuinely think it is the perfect car for a college kid in the south. I got mine under 10k, insurance isn’t too killer, and again I don’t drive every day so gas isn’t bad. I would absolutely recommend it

My '04 Spiral Metallic Grey C5 coupe was my daily driver for 4 years until I retired about 6 months ago. I live in Tucson, so that is very doable. Daily commute was about 23miles, with 60% on the freeway. I would keep a cover over it as much as possible when at work. Fuel economy was just like you said, 19+ to 22+ mpg, with 27-29mpg on the freeway. I have never driven it real aggressively, so can't say how bad the mpg would get. There are a lot of bad roads here, and the car let's you know it. If 90% of your driving is just you in the car, then the C5 is a great solution. Lots of room for groceries and such. It has been pretty reliable, though I did have to have the a/c compressor & associated parts replaced recently. And there is the fuel sending unit problem, but that clears up before long and works normally until the next tank fillup. Not until I owned a Corvette (this is my 1st) would I have random strangers come up, or when stopped at a light, tell me what a nice looking car it was, or give me a thumbs up- it happened again just today!

    I bought an 01 C5Z ... very much like yours ...
specifically to make a 105 mile one way drive to work. (210 for the commute) Once/sometimes twice per week. It replaced a Jetta TDI which was a very good commuter car, but it was needed to serve another.
I'm only a month into it, but so far no significant issues. I LOVE how much distance-required to pass on a two-lane road has decreased, even without "scaring" the oncoming driver. 60-passing speed ... is outstanding. Cruising at 68, Valerie attains 32 mpg ... that's calculated "by hand." The computer said 32.5, so that's pretty good accuracy ... and mileage.
great vid. appreciate your Vette insight.

Really great breakdown on stuff to lookout for when driving the C5 platform. Main thing from a driving standpoint, what sort of weather and roads are in your area. From comfort standpoint it's not for me when it comes to DD duty compared to what's available to even entry level hatches and commuters. It's the perfect entry level weekend car and great track car, if it's sorted.

Good review! I lived in Socal and daily drove a C5 for many years. I rarely put the roof on it for 7 years. Moved back to NJ and the first winter I continued to drive the C5. The crummy roads and potholes were my biggest concern in the Northeast. Especially during and post plow season. If snow was in the forecast the car stayed in the garage.

From any of the Corvettes that you have owned, would YOU daily drive any of them with your current living, road, and location conditions (3 season)?
Interested to know, as I would think the C7 would be the most "daily-able" car, but curious on your view.
For the record, I have an STI and rallyX car and I daily the VA1 STi. The c5z06 is a "treat" car to drive to work, but it is perfect mechanical condition to drive / commute to work (35 mi one way) and I did do that for 2 years. Didn't bother me and Raleigh / Durham has bad traffic at rush hours on I-40.

The C5 is an excellent daily driver, simply based on my needs, and for the record, I live in FL so I do not have typical weather/seasonal issues. If you need seating for more than two, of course, it is not a good choice. However, for me it is perfect. Yes, there are some issues with Speed Bumps and driveway dips, etc. Again these are things you learn and workaround. Great gas mileage, depending on my choice! Great RoadTrip car and I purposely take back roads when I can. The Trunk is amazing fr holding much more than you believe. Mine is a Cv/Convertable and my only real-world issue is if I have to park it somewhere: marginal", which I always try to work around. In my last 5 years my only required "not normal" costs was the Harmonic Balancer failure, which is common of all LS engines, so to me, that is not even a worry. Go for it! Oh, and mine is a 6 speed manual by choice! The one thing I do as a workaround is bad weather, as I have only been caught in the rain three times, but never left the house when it was raining, I take the other car. by choice.

However, I missed my mark and those are now too expensive, and the c5 has very similar and beautiful aesthetic/look and shape. All that with even more reliable powertrain, and 100hp more stock. With my daily c5, mpg is better then my jeep. If you put a car seat in for your kid. Turn the air bag off and move the seat as far back as possible. Sitting in traffic isn't bad, but I have an auto. one downside, the temp creeps up while sitting in traffic. I put it in neutral which seems to keep the temp lower for some reason. My only complaint is that the speed limits are too low 😎. the near by gas station has non ethanol 93, The car loves it, the bank not so much. O yea, a small leak on the back passenger targa top....... that's my biggest complaint. I guess I'll have to pull it apart and reseal it.

Go to the middle of nowhere, turn all the baby sitters off. Put it in first, rev it up, dump the clutch, and press the break as fast as possible, while maintaining high rpms. When you're done burning rubber. Move the gas foot to the break and brake foot to the clutch all at the same time. Oooooor increasingly left off the break and gas to ride out the burn out drag race style. Be careful, the car might try to go side ways. When in doubt just smash the clutch and break leaving the gas alone. Fast foot work is key. Practice the foot work some before actually trying a burn out.
