Really helpful tutorial. I had problems when ı was rigging a character. Thanks to you I will make a better character animation. Looking forward to see your new tutorials
I would like you make a full tutorial about duik, I mean, about all of it elements like conectors and another tools inside it, I apologise my bad english
Video starts at 5:36 | Parenting 7:28 | 7:43 Autorig _Still it is unclear, how to control direction of the Hand. Its dangling downwards like it was dead_
No no, the video doesn't start at 5:36. That's just where we start setting everything up in After Effects. This tutorial is not only about how to rig the character, it is also about how to design a character with shape layers to help you in the rigging process. AKA the first 5 minutes of the tutorial. It's important to NOT skip that part. The rotation of the hand is dealt with by rotating the controller layer of the limb. OR if you want the hand to rotation with the forearm automatically, you can disable the expression on the hand layer rotation property.
@@TheKeyframeAcademy Sure thing. I've spend some time in AE over the years and consider rigging somewhat advanced technique, which makes first 5minutes inadequately basic. I think most already know how to prep AI for import.
@@LightspeedTutorials I disagree. I think a lot of people jump into character rigging without consideration of how to actually design their characters for easy set up in DUIK. The workflow I've outlined here, if followed, is the most streamlined way to create character limbs that don't break so that you can avoid frustration further down the line. On the contrary, I believe that it is adequately basic because the designing process for characters isn't all that complicated. Also I think that the reception to this tutorial is evidence enough that a fair amount of people tend to agree with me.
My grandad the other day: "how much are you on these days?" "why?" "because you can't afford socks." - Good to see I am not the only one who wears out socks... while sitting for a job.
Can you make aa video on same topic on How to Bend Hip properly bcoz when i did this i have the same effect that with this characters Arm plzz tell us sir
hey is there a way to scale down or scale up your character once its all rigged without precomposing it? I initially had it double the size of my comp so that i could scale it down and not lose its quality but didnt know how to. precomposing it i would have to go back and forth between compositions for all the movements to match up. any suggestions?
Yeah, you can parent everything to a null, but then you have to go back and reparent everything back up to the other body parts. I'll be honest, I will usually pre-comp. jumping back and forth isn't that much of a pain for me, especially if I use the mini flowchart.
Thank you so much . I have a character with black stroke . and its in photoshop . Also its a solid object . I want to separate the parts . ? Also I don't wanna use pins cause my character is realistic and I don't want it to be like clays . is that possible or not ? I know sounds silly but any help would be appreciated .
Hi Amir, Yeah, it is possible if you know how to duplicate my technique of creating the limbs in illustrator, but do it in photoshop. You might need to create some marker layers that are place directly in the center of the circles so you know where to place everything perfectly in after effects, then once everything is rigged up in After Effects, you can go back into photoshop and delete those markers and the file should update in After Effects. Hope this helps!
Sometimes I think when you group things, it will close any paths that are open. So you may just have to use the scissor tool again to cut that line out. That's assuming I am understanding what you're describing correctly.
Probably increase your workflow 100% by not having Rogen screaming in your ear all day long. Too much exposure will make you start to think he actually knows what he was talking about. Although I did like him in Fear Factor.
Thank you very much. great video tutorial ... but as always ... they never show how to make the hand follow the direction of the arm. Since it stays in the direction of the ground. ALWAYS!
I actually cover this in a different video here: ruclips.net/video/AcEIT03Mrzk/видео.html Some character rigging tools have a feature called 'auto rotate' and will do what you're talking about. In the case of Duik, it doesn't have an auto rotate feature. So you have to rotate the hand manually.
If you want a sleeve that extends past the elbow, then just design the bicep to be fully sleeved, and then the forearm you can just bring the sleeve from the elbow down to wherever you want it. No need to create a separate set of layers for a separate rig.
Then you can change stroke and fill color and change path in after effects, rather than in illustrator, also apply a bunch of things that are available only for shape layers (repeater etc).
It is so that After Effects can detect the center of the circles we made for the joints of the limbs, so that when we rig everything up, the joints are lined up and don't break.
I think a really useful video would be like a 'best practices' for designing your characters in order for the DUIK experience to be as smooth as possible. For example, I've just done a project where a client wanted me to animate their mascot, but it was sent in sort of a running pose, which made the walk cycle a nightmare to get looking good. Now admittedly that's almost certainly because I'm not goot enough yet at animation or DUIK to know how to quickly isolate and correct errors, and I'm sure there are far more efficient ways than what I've been doing, but I'm enjoying learning even though I'm a total newbie to animation.
Thank you for the tutorial! Is it an option to take a detailed illustration created on psd or procreate to use for rigging? Since you mentioned, that the process is best done in AI for alignment.
yes is is an option. You just have to make sure your joints are lined up on the circles like I've shown here. However, I do not think that AE will be able to snap to the center of the circles on the joints like it can with a shape layer. Which means you'll have to eyeball it.

ok fair enough, title says How to design, not How to Rig FAST, so I guess that includes the *.ai part.
Upon import, make sure none of your AI Layers has a Bleding mode on (like Multiply)
