Dodge Charger HEMI V8 AWD - History, Why It Got Cancelled, & When Will it Return?

  • Today we are looking at the Dodge Charger Hemi AWD. Every so often I get the question: "Why doesn’t Dodge offer a Charger with AWD and a Hemi V8?" Or, "Dodge used to have a Charger R/T AWD, why don’t they anymore? Why on Earth would they cancel it?" Chasing down the answers to those questions inspired this video. There was indeed a Charger R/T with the 5.7L V8 Hemi from 2007 until 2014, but it was cancelled after that and has yet to return. The only AWD models since 2015 have been V6s and Police cars. So, we’ll take a look back at the previous AWD models from 2007-2014 for the Charger R/T, and then look at reasons why the thing was cancelled after that, and why it still hasn’t returned to the market today.

Probably the people who cry are different people than ones who buy. Crying ones are often armchair experts or people who drive old car because "buying new one is not worth it" but at the same time they get angry at car companies cutting models because of not enough customers 😂

People like the availability of the AWD option, even if it wasn't something they'd purchase. I still remember folks being upset with the AWD option being deleted with the arrival of the 2015 models. They weren't happy with the 2015 redesign either, but that's another story.

Sale's weren't worth the profit. Not enough sales or average shoppers had no clue they could get AWD. Engeniers said the 6.4 sedans couldn't be AWD because a part or part of the engine is in the way. Wouldn't be cost effective to re-engineer to slap AWD to existing platform for a couple more sales.

Was getting a lot of miles on the Pontiac and didn't like the small car so I started looking about. Only then I found some Chargers had AWD. Don't recall ever seeing an add for Charger RTs with that option. Looked at the newer AWD models because we are 72 and getting too old to shovel my way out of being stuck. When I discovered the RT version, I decided to find one. Found a 2014 with relatively low miles. Been very happy with it. Put real snow tires on it too.

In 2013 when I was shopping for a sedan with power and AWD, I was stuck with European cars, the Taurus SHO and the Charger. I chose the Charger and I’ve been thrilled. The cost of ownership has been lower than an import. And it cost 10 grand less than the competition. Dodge has been all about doing what no one else is doing. They didn’t realize how unique/special this car was. Had they marketed it better, they could have justified the R&D to update it.

2011 R/T AWD with all options except adaptive cruise control. Handles Colorado winters like a champ. I can take almost any car off the line or from a roll. Burn out are pretty impossible as you have to manually drop to first and get really aggressive with the car. Anyone with the 7th Gen body type that spins donuts in powder snow knows that the leading side turn into a giant snowplow with 0% visibility. Thankfully I have leather and a few good towels, so I just roll down my window and let the snow in. I know... sacrilege. - I managed to jump my wife’s Honda Pilot AWD upon hitting a patch of ice and going into a shoulder ditch. I feel that if I were in my Charger, I wouldn’t have had a problem with the ice. Again, in my wife’s car, this time a Honda Pilot AWD that was from the previous year to the one mentioned above, I hit a moose because the car wouldn’t respond to fast handling. The car was totaled. Hence the second Pilot. And again, I feel like the moose would still be alive and I would be considering it a close call if I were in my Charger. I also take a solo road trip from Denver to Las Vegas every non-COVID year. I can drop the back seats, flatten the front passenger and throw down an inflatable mattress and stay in the car overnight in different rest stops. Decent room for someone that weighs 280 & 5,8”. Big guy. Anyway, the car slips into Eco mode for of the drive and it handles mid-May Vegas traffic just fine. I’m going to stay in the 7th Gen as I like the meaty body and grill. No major problems, except for factory recalls. But they have taken less than a day to address. I did replace the breaks with Brembo (?sp). I get a nice aggressive stop. Well, that’s it. My Charger is 10 years old and still an impressive machine.

I have a '14 Charger R/T AWD Max.. It eats up the snow, will drive pretty much normal in the winter. I specifically went looking for this vehicle, not expecting to find the Max edition in 2015. I first looked at 2015 300's, then found out they didn't offer it anymore, so I went looking for a 2014, and found the AWD MAX Charger with 16k on it, the original owner had to trade it in for a new truck because his business was needing more trucks.. The happen by, actually looking another R/T AWD at a Chevy dealer and saw this, and the rest is history. I love it.. Will get a tune on it soon to improve performance. Updated fogs to led.. When i found out there were canceling the awd RT in 2015, i traded in my 08 awd RT for a 14 awd RT. AWD is just not for snow, its also great for handling. Audi, BMW and others have been doing this for years, awd drive really helps the car corner better and more stable. Just my opinion, but when it comes time for a new car, sadly it will not be a charger, which i love.

Totally agree, even more so the type of system these use is superior to the Audi, BMW, and most others in regard to handling.

I have to say I am very happy with my 07 300 AWD, it definitely feels different than my 06 Limited and my 05C. I just bought it for my wife for Christmas. I like the fact that it pulls itself right up onto the ramps rather than trying to push them out of the way. Did anyone else notice the 5 speed is still the choice for severe duty AWD police cars? Telling me the NAG1 Mercedes transmission is the more robust of the two, plus the slap stick is nice too.

Marspeed: Your clips of The Awd Charger doing cookies in snow look so similar to me and my buddy doing the same in his grey Sport Edition at night time in a snowy lot, and you have a slide of his exact car. I like the current Charger front and rear treatment, but I think the 11-14 Charger is one of my favorite looking full size muscle sedans ever styled.

I just got a 2013 awd 300s with hemi for work, and it is amazing so far. I also have a 2018 durango rt for the family. I drive them both in pretty extreme cold (-40c) and snow (foot or so),... the performance is remarkably similar, with the durango feeling just slightly more confident. I bet if they do bring back some kind of awd performance charger or 300 it would be some kind of hybrid electric.

Fast forward to present day making more money and having good credit, I'm sad to see that AWD is no longer an option, that's the one thing that has kept me away from the car as where I go a 4x4 truck or AWD car that's more than an inch off the ground is required.

You don't even need an AWD model for winter conditions; just offer a rear differential upgrade package for RWD models with a limited-slip/torsion diff .
the only reason the vehicle cant maneuver in slow is that is has an open differential; so once one wheel spins, thats it.

Great video. I think small families under 5 people that live in hillsides or snowy terrains would benefit from a charger or chrysler awd sedans. I like them but I live in a flat sea level valley where most of the year it's dry, so a awd sedan wouldn't benefit me much. And yes I have been wanting a suv more and more over the years. I can understand their growing popularity.

I just picked up an AWD RT max last month. I wanted a daily winter driver with a hemi. And suvs are too top heavy for me when it’s nice out. I didn’t buy it new, because I got a challenger instead. But any muscle car “feeling” guy hates driving a winter beater. Nothing worse than the “I miss my v8”. I do agree with the transmission change being an issue with the awd system and room. Hence the 5 speed still in the police package. I suggest to anyone who wants one, don’t wait too much longer. The mileage is going up and so are the prices. Took me a few months to find one.

07 SXT owner! Sitting at 40k so the car was practically new when i purchased it! I was almost disappointed as a previous owner of old volvos, but i very quickly learned how quirky and as reliable as you treat them type of cars. I'm a mechanical sadist and empathize with cars like I do natural locomotion (i would treat a horse like i wanted it to outlive me if this was 1821, not 2021.)
Anyone here own one? Do you like them? I live in NY and this weather has saved my life already from a collision on 9w (3 ft from a 250ft cliff for those who are from the rest of the world)
I loved my volvos, but there is a reason i always took the train in winter months

And during the driver's ed class he had to take recently when he got his first speeding ticket, the state patrolman noted the Charger & said it is the best vehicle in the snow bar none, including SUVs. Even with 154k miles, the Charger still has much energy.

Last night here in upstate SC bunch of snow started coming down. We were expecting flurries.
Man it was literally the end of the world. Dozens of cars stranded and trucks couldn't get friction. And the rolling hill terrain didnt hell.
I saw a car in such a deep ditch the rear bumper was the only thing level with the road.
Meanwhile I'm giddy that my 4wd 4runner is doing something as I went to go save my mother.
4wd / AWD isnt always needed but so helpful when ya need it.
