      Instead of a metal roof, have you considered overlaping live edge slabs that are otherwise waste?
      Theses would also be attractive IMHO.

    I believe the benefit to this new firewood stand extends well beyond having a structure to stand up to the elements and more options to arrange the wood but it is also much more pleasing to the eye and professional looking. I think you will see sales increase significantly. Perhaps you can report on that in a few months. Possibly add some solar led lights to illuminate it at night.

    Nice project. Good to get experience on something that doesn't matter if you make a small mistake or decide that you would like it done differently. Projects with Dad will always be remembered.
    I was surprised the skid steer post hole auger worked as well as it did. I have learned to just leave the dirt on the auger and go to the next hole. It helps keep the dirt in fewer places and gives a little extra dirt on the rest of the holes if you aren't filling the hole with concrete.
    You and neighbor Doug make a good team

    Your firewood stand has a more substantial foundation than my 36’x60’ barn, which is sitting on fieldstone pretty much on the ground surface (and has lasted 200 years so far) 😆. The timberframe just moves with the ground. Having jacked sections up, it’s amazing how flexible and how strong it is.

  • @SwannOG
    @SwannOG Год назад +6

    Just a hint for doing concrete work. Before using your bucket or shovel simply spray them heavily with either fuel oil or diesel fuel. This makes cleanup extremely easy especially if you are working doing several yards of concrete. Regarding posts coming into contact with the ground or being submerged use regular roofing tar to coat them heavily letting them dry just a bit. Also for what you are doing you might the Japanese technique Shou Sugi Ban where you lightly char the wood as this helps in preserving the wood against rot, parasites, and bacterial and invasive parasites looking for the lignin within the wood upon which to feed. You can then use an oil based stain to finish the wood off. You might also want to put a wood post cap on any posts that will be exposed on top to help them shed the water. cheap insurance for longer lasting timbers.

  • @blklbluvr
    @blklbluvr Год назад

    You might think about changing the screws on the base. If they are regular screws you have to worry about them rusting and breaking over time. Maybe a small lag screw.

    • @BTom24

      Michael S, you’re missing the value. The value of this project isn’t the cost. It’s the practice that he got, that practice will give him confidence to build a shed or an out building which will save him thousands. He also benefits by having a nice roadside stand that isn’t like the many others. Also, as one person stated it could also be used a bus stop for his kiddos when they get older.
      Value doesn’t always come in the form of money. The best value is knowledge, pride and self-worth. He got all 3 in this video.

    Sorry Dude... Butt joints are an inferior and lazy way of building... Ya it looks great, but traditional timber framing consists of mortise and tenons. You're relying on the shear strength of just the lags. Gotta quit your channel... You're cutting way too many corners on your projects between burying the sill plates of your north wall of your garage to your current project. Take the time and do it right.
