The "little mad man inside the machine" is linear interpolation and linear phase with logarithmic waves. Which means no sonic errors (quantization, harmonic dist.) Sound actually acts as it would naturally, instead of pulse codes (flat linear waves).

The pedigree of this keyboard comes from Commodore computers, also ahead of their time... caused a revolution in desktop video. These engineers made magic more than once.
I bought my ASR 10 when they first came out. Still have it to this day. Still works great, no overheating or shutting down. Upgraded the memory to increase sample time. I had two ASR's but ended up trading one for an MPC 2000xl. Love both the ASR and the MPC but my ASR is like my first born- it will always be my number one !!! Workflow is definitely slower/different but if you can master the ASR everything else is easy. If you have the patience and the time to watch youtube tutorials I highly recommend an ASR 10
Yeah I like the workflow..I think you need equipment like that sometimes to make you expand your creativity..It makes you try things you normally wouldn't try.
I remember Alchemist saying he could chop faster on the ASR10 than anybody could chop on any machine, I kinda believe him but I never got that fast, but preferred it 'cause 1 you could do 61 chops on a sample without wasting any memory, 2. Hardly anything shows on the screen so it's all what your hearing no visual chopping just by the feel and sound
gotta love the ASR10 man! the sample management is unique and very different from MPCs. It goes > INSTRUMENT > LAYERS > SAMPLES !
Yeah its a totally different workflow..If you not use to it it might be a lil weird for you..But you can actually create easily with it.
You are smacking up the other channel that does individual histories of old-school samplers. Whereas your videos are your own natural narration, the other channel basically reads off the information from a Google search and doesn't give off the enthusiasm that you do here. It's still some of the histories but I prefer your videos on samplers by far

And one correction. Speeding up the records to get more out of the sampling time was going on for years before the ASR came out. That was a necessity if you all you had was an SP-12 Turbo or SP-1200. And when you slowed the sample down to its original tuning, that’s when you would get that infamous, distorted, ring modulated sound quality. The ASR had considerably more sampling time which meant you did not have to speed up the record maximize sampling time. If you maxed out the memory, you could literally sample a short song. The sound quality would also be way better and especially if you’re sampling in stereo.
I leave mine on for days and it never shuts off, I've had mine since 93 and use it with an sp 1200 as a drummer

I got mine in '93 too! Paid a out $2600. Sold it and got the rack mount in 2000. Still have the rack and use with the SP.

Lol. Yeah Q-tip mastered a couple machines.
Tip didn’t use the ASR-10, at least not on any of his classic productions.
Peoples Instinctive Travels ... and Low End Theory were SP-1200 and S950-ASR wasn’t even out yet.
Midnight Marauders was one of the earlier MPC’s and the aforementioned machines.
And Beats, Rhymes, Life and Love Movement were the MPC 3000 alongside Dilla. Same for Amplified. Then it’s been the Renaissance ever since on the solo record with the same name and the last Tribe album.
He’s done interviews and even rhymed about his equipment, but you just need to listen to the beats-none of his beats have the ASR-10 just by using the ear test.

Well, Q-Tip didn’t use it for songs that I’m aware of. He’s talked about the gear he used quite a bit. Of course, Peoples Instinctive Travels and Low End Theory both came out before ‘92, so Midnight Marauders is the only album that could have used and ASR 10, but that album doesn’t sound anything like the ASR.
The one thing that seemed out of left field was a guy on gear space-or some gear site like that-that claimed he talked to Q-Tip at a recording studio during the Renaissance sessions, and Tip allegedly said he also messed around with one of the Ensoniq EPS versions. So it’s possible that some of the earlier stuff may have used Ensoniq, but not the ASR. But that’s the only time I’ve ever heard Q-Tip mentioned with Ensoniq, and who knows how reliable that piece of gossip is?
And even if Q-Tip said that, you never know if he’s just fucking with people? I know if some random dude came up to me asking how I got my drums to sound like this or that, there is a high likelihood that I will mislead or flat out lie about what I did or used. “Yeah, I used this old Roland sampler to do that beat. It’s a real quirky machine, very unique swing, so it gave those drums a certain je ne sais quoi!”
To my ears-however inaccurate/accurate they may be-the vast majority of his classic production work was done using the Large Professor method (fellow Queensbridge legend who literally taught Q-Tip his method) of sampling in the S950, and sequencing/and or doing additional drums in the MPC or SP-1200. And the Ummah period was all later period MPC’s and sounds very much like it. Of course, Dilla didn’t use the ASR, either. So … pretty much back to where I started with my original comment.
@@79Glitch Bottom line if the music sounds good doesn't matter what they used... shit, Price Paul made The Gas Face on a Casio RZ-1 it sounded dope... low-fi but dope. I've been using an ASR10 since 1994 just because I know it front to back and don't feel like relearning a new machine that took me years to fully understand what I already have. Maybe I shouldn't be stuck in my ways but anyway. Just added an SD drive via scsi and stopped using the unreliable floppy drive. Also, finally got an output expander and a Tascam model 12 to individual track out / properly mix beats.

ASR 10 was my first sampler/keyboard in ‘94. I learned on it so tbh it wasn’t difficult to use. I miss it and wish I never sold it 😢

Love this channel this was the first sample keyboard I ever played and messed with it blew me away but when it came out it was over 2 grand so I bought a Mpc 2000 that was a grand cheaper I most say the sound of that keyboard very clean as it was new at the time

Funny hearing you say the ASR-10 only has this amount of RAM and only 2 audio tracks and only this and only that when at the time those specs were crushing the competition. The MPC-60 had like 1.5 MB. The SP-1200 only had 256 KB. Non of them had audio tracks. Plus the ASR could sample in stereo and had built in FX. To look back 30 years it seems low tech, but at the time it was Godzilla.
I love my ASR-10 keyboard. The circuitry and the effects are CRAZY! Creating dope boom bap and trap beats on it.

Yes! One of my favorite channels doing one of my favorite samplers from my favorite company!
Back in the day the ones who bought the ASR10 were future producers who couldn't afford buying an MPC and effects and compressors and outboard gear and all the extras just to get it to sound right. This was before computers were everywhere.... The ASR10 did it all in one box if you needed to and at a much cheaper price. Ensoniq was always far ahead of the curve, wish they were still around today.
Next you need to do the Mirage 😁
Then buy the Ensoniq Paris to multitrack. Mannnnn it was ahead of it's time.

@@aldonova4082 I would normalize before boost. It just brought the sample up to full level without clipping if you sampled it a bit below max threshold. Then the boost would take it into Analog style saturated sound. Timbaland did this all the time

Sampling with the classic Triton is dope also. That Triton is the keyboard that took the ASR 10's spotlight in the late 90's and had a run from 1999- 2005. Everybody was using that joint
Lol. Oh ok no doubt..The Triton is a real nice piece..great sounds in there..Its so comfortable to use.
Owned one. Gave it to my niece. Currently going back to the old school and chopping samples exactly the way we did then but using FL studio for sequencer. It does take real work to craft a song. You're building a boat basically. You gotta make all the parts but it's the choice in parts and how you flip em that makes it the original hip hop sound.

Bro, You should do a spill on the ensoniq eps and the ensoniq mirage too.. both keyboards made history before the eps16/asr10. And were used on countless classic hip hop and rnb albums.. Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis used the 8bit ensoniq mirage on Janet Jackson’s “control” album

Ensoniq ASR10 owner,checking in..I will tell you what it's about.It's a MONSTER and makes you work,it's slow,it's hot,yet the SOUND,is insanity.It is NOT an MPC,never meant to be,and I bought the 16MB,yet i never put it in,so it's still 2MB.It taught me to truncate,process,flip,mangle,normalize,and then I could spin with it live,as an EFX unit,where it shines like no other.I have other samplers,more recent,yet not as fast and creative,in seconds.I did approach a sound expert about why the sounds tended to change as hours passed by,and he did confirm that there's some energy transfer with heated gear,that colors the sound.If they made an ASR 11,like a 10 with USB,more RAM,and an SSD/SATA feature,i would sell all my other samplers,to get it.It was just ahead of it's time and yes,it was $2500...include Klute too,who makes Drum and Bass..

@@DyReckProductions I found i didnt NEED the space,although the idea to have more is nice.I have the Roland MV 8800 and two other samplers,and they all have their own workflows.None matches up against the ASR10 though,with that signature sound/flexibility.Then too,it matches perfectly with the Ts10,TS12,VFX,and the MR 61,etc..

Man, I still have my ASR-10 Rackmount and My EPS 16 Plus with 8 Output Expander. I Made Some Big Hits on them Love them both. Got my EPS 16 Plus in 1991 and ASR-10 in 1995
Your an O.G.. You had to spend some money back then to get them in those years.
You can keep it super cool if you remove the memory upgrade cover under right side and get a $10 Amazon usb powered fan. (Get the larger one) and rig it to blow directly in. You can leave the ASR on and it stays cool.

Mine used to overheat alot and crash because I had it flat on a table (no airflow underneath). As soon as I put it on a keyboard stand (lots of airflow) overheating stopped.

literally kanye since he is making music is using the ASR 10, he said in a interview that in his childhood he did beats with the EPS 16+ but then, when he started being a producer he began using the ASR 10.
Even today he is using it, check the AWGE DVD Volume 3, he made a dope beat with the ASR 10.

Modern?? All the good ones cost over 3k..The Kronos, Montage, or New Fantom series..Anything for 1k or under doesn't really have a good sampler..I would probably get a used Fantom x or g series or the Motif es xs or xf series..the es got a small screen..and the xf are still pretty expensive like 2k..The Triton extreme is also ok and has usb.

@@claudiocardamone2231 Yeah the S-50 pretty popular keyboard in the 80's and expensive almost like the Fairlight.
I got an ASR10 in 1993 and my primary love was electronic music (House, Techno, Ambient). I have used Logic since 2008, but I swear I seem to make better tunes when using the ASR10, primarily. It's really easy to throw your ideas down with the onboard sequencer. However, it does take a lot of work to get your samples inputted. But the synthesis on the ASR10 is wonderful, as well as the onboard FX.
I remember back in 1996 when I'd take a demo tape to a studio, engineers would ask, "What equipment are you using?" When I told 'em an ASR10, they would always ask what other equipment did I have. They didn't believe it was just the ASR10.
If you have one, you should get the ZIP drive installed within the ASR10. There's a guy, FORAT, in Los Angeles, that does this installation. This way, the floppy drive is replaced with ZIP disk drive. Talk about sweet!!!
Yeah the ASR10 is pretty dope!..And Forat still does his thing hooking them up and the MPC's.

Had the rack version. Varm noice-free sound. Fantastic delay. Opened it up once. That thing was cramed with stuff. Like 3 times more components than a regular PC. Never had any overheating. Eventually the display broke down, sadly. 🙁

I've been using the Ensoniq EPS 16 plus since 90 or 91. Actually, two of them for live performance. I've done radio and television commercials with them as well.
I know they're old school but they are edgy and amazing especially when you tri-amp in stereo (which they say can't be done but I've been doing it for over 30 years) Gauss 600 w subs (mono of course), 600 w JBL pro series 12-in transducers for the mids and 27 lb JBL high frequency horn drivers. Most people have never heard sound that transparent. It's like you can see the space that surrounds each note played. Anyhow...
My scuzzy hard drive finally bit the dust. But I sent it to Chicken Systems/Rubber Chicken software who are Ensoiq specialists to retrieve data off the disk and for a little over a hundred bucks replaced my mechanical scuzzy hard drive with a scuzzy SD hard drive.
If you've been using Ensoniq for any length of time you probably have dealt with these guys. If not, they are the go-to guys for anything Ensoniq.
Just ask for Garth. He founded rubber chicken over 30 years ago. Tell him Neil Jones sent you.
Dope..Sounds like the ESP 16+ made you alot of money...Its good that there's still folks out there repairing vintage gear.
I called that guy but never heard back so I sent mine to The Soniq in California and he fixed it.
I had the Ensoniq EPS 16+. That sucker would get hot and freeze a lot. But it was a beast for sampling.

I had one and I always had save my tracks because mine was would crash when it was fully loaded with sounds. I loved it though. DJ Muggs is a master of it.

Yeah, me too... spend hours on a beat and would crash before I saved anything to floppy. Always save as you go and put it on a keyboard stand not on a desk to prevent overheating (more airflow in a stand).
@Dyreck Productions this was my first sampler and I bought it used from this music store is Syricuse called Daddy's Junky Music. So I drove 2hrs from Rochester NY to Syricuse to get this machine because I heard Devante Swing from Jodeci made the album Diary Of A Mad Band on it. And this keyboard was heavy. It was the 88 key version. When I got it I hated it. I could not figure out how to use it to save my life. I traded to my homeboy for his mpc 2000xl. IMO the only good thing about the ASR 10 is the warm sound and the effects. You can't beat those effects to this day. They just have this warm sound. That keyboard has this grimey warm sound. Also you can chop your sample across the keys without using any memory

Used to go to the grocery store whist a time stretch processed 😁
I knew a producer who used this, he made dope sample based R&B ala Timbaland, it really forced him to get SUPER CREATIVE. It had dope sounds that came with it on floppy's. Timbo used the upright bass a lot, heard on songs like Can We Get Freaky Tonight by SWV.
Yeah Timbo was a beast on the ASR10.
I still have a none working asr that i just can't get rid of. I think it was the best workstation ever.
I once talked to Jake One person to person about music back in 2005, he had his ASR-10. He even brought it to a beats contest at a club that day.

Even now, I'm using Logic, but I tend to sample sounds from VSTs into the ASR, then play them back. The sound synthesis is so beautiful... especially those filters and FX.

@@DyReckProductions The interesting thing is that the first one I had there were issues, getting errors, etc. I took it back to the retailer and they sent it to the factory. They replaced the motherboard and I believe they took extra care at that time because the ASR was new. Whatever they did, haven't had issues since. I also replaced the floppy drive with an internal zip100 drive. It's connected to the SCSI, but internally. So much better.

Ensoniq is an oddball company in general. That's what makes them cool. If you want your stuff to sound unique and not like everything else that's out there just grab any one of their synths and it'll force you to sound different. When everyone else is using presets from their DX7s or Tritons or Junos that have all been used over and over just grab an ESQ1 and within 2 minutes you'll have awesome sounds coming out that are actually interesting.
Yup..They are a different kind a company..But had alot of cool products.

I heard the sequencer was no good on the ASR X. So I bought a Roland S-550 sampler and synced it with a Roland MC-50 sequencer. Used and old Yamaha keyboard for midi triggering. Miss that set up.

S550 def has a unique crunch to it, esp at 15k. Filters are pretty cool too

Any real beat maker whos owned an ASR-10 knows what it means to truly compose and produce a hip hop joint... Theres no auto chop, no library of drum sounds to pick from, no sample library or vst's, no step sequencer with pre programmed templates to automatically make the beat for you... With the ASR-10 you TRULY had to make the beat... Anyone who understands hip hop from the perspective of an ASR, an SP12 or even an mpc 60 - aint nobody fuckin wit you when it comes to hip-hop production... Those machines represent the era of REAL AUTHENTIC "cook up" beat making.. Sold my ASR a couple years back but would love to get another one eventually... I have 8 sneaker boxes & one draw filled with floppy diskettes of all my drums & samples over the years since 95... Some serious heat on them disks... The ASR also has some dope Effects & filters... No visual wave edit when chopping samples though... You edit samples using your ears by increasing & subtracting the value of wave numbers & micro number till it sound perfect

Me too have hundreds and hundreds of floppies with samples and beats I made... mostly drunk LoL one day I'll load them all up and see what I made haha.
