- The Complex Sneakers Podcast is co-hosted by Joe La Puma, Brendan Dunne, and Matt Welty. This week they’re joined by Austin Babbitt, better known as Asspizza, a young streetwear designer who came up in the Soho scene in the 2010s. Asspizza’s latest product are his 730 sneakers, which are based on the popular Nike Air More Uptempo. In the episode, he talks about how he got the shoes made, avoiding legal issues around them, meeting with Kanye West, and more. Also, Joe wins a prize on the boardwalk, Welty survives food poisoning, and Brendan does some complaining.

Which silhouette do you have the most of and what makes you like it?
At one point I had too many New Balance 550’s and Nike Jordan 1 High. I sold most of them since then but yeah too many pairs kills it for me.
Probably adidas forum 84's. I like how people look in them when they skate them. I like skating the collabs. The girls are awesome forum 84s make an insta clip 100 times better
Jordan 1. Clean. Simple. Classic.
Jordan 3. I just love the design and how they feel on foot.
Zx8000, classic shape.
Austin Babbit is the truth. Creativity will always prevail in the long term
This and FSR is turning into a real Friday routine. All love
I agree i watch both on Friday's
Best combo ever
"I created all this" POP YO SHIIII AUSTIN!!!
Was one of the few who camped out the night before the 730 LA pop-up . It was definitely an experience getting to see Austin and the team prepare the store for the next day. Got the second pair of 730s ever sold , and some garments tagged up . Certified Wibe.

NO ONE CARES........NO ONE
Sneaker shopping with asspizza would be great 💯
such a great episode, i like the fact that Austin mentions that it's "just the beginning" def excited to see what kinds of projects he brings out in the future. a true creative
A true creative? He’s all logo flips and cut/paste. I’m not hating on bootleg, and the 730s are cool but this is the lowest level of creativity.
Yeah I'm a fan but the guy is not some creative god
@@Nothingpersonal42Asspizza litteraly has a virgil co sign bro he dont care about you
Never regret a day in your life. Good days give you happiness, bad days give you experience,
worst days give you lessons, and best days
give you memories.Keep going 💪🏽💗
YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN KILLING IT!!!!!!! LOVE THIS EPISODE
i’m rooting for him, he really reminds me of virgil and how passionate he was for the true art and creative.
“They’ve lost their touch” and sampling a whole nike shoe 😂😂
I think what he means is that the proffit oriented clothing and footwear generally of these brands is not the same as it used to be before CEOs of said companys got greedy and decided that making as much money as possible from products rather than higher quality products for less returns on sales.
I mean nikes first shoe ever was a rip off of a other brand
You guys have been killing it with the guests recently
I wasn't sure about this kid at first but I kinda get him and actually want him to succeed.
Nah
Dude is mid AF.
He needs to drop the asspizza name and just be Austin
"Me and my William, me and my friend William." this was a funny moment
Jlp: we did the go karts
Dunne: did you do the go karts?
Lol, bro you gotta let people complete their thoughts
I want to change the sneaker world takes a Nike silhouette and puts 730 on it 😂
These are like dress shoes bro. All leather inside and gorgeous suede uppers and the the 730 is all Italian leather. I think he may be onto something ☠️
@@730tay4 design is still stolen from an uptempo
"whats an uptempo" yeah sure
@@vxncnt I never said they weren’t 🤣

Love how guys reminisce about early 2000s to late 90s to today ! 40 year old from CT ! This is prob my fav podcast ! Welty is a G , Joe calves and mr dunne well done 👍 stuff here
So excited for this
Really good podcast! Shoutout Austin!
This was one of the best interviews y'all have done super genuine
That was a good interview 👍
“Skaters would hate me” 😂😂
quality of the 730s super clean , HARMONIOUS GANG
gotta love this kid's conviction
Dope interview
Salute to y'all having azzP. On. Dude is respected as a pioneer from those who know.
I feel like major stores don't care about online bots winning all the raffles and buying all the shoes within second,
You will never get a pair of hype sneakers until they do something about it whether it's making people verify accounts using phone numbers or doing in store sales and make it 1 per customer,
The sneaker re sellers are absolutely ridiculous at this point.
great guest, guy has a story to tell for sure
i feel like these are the type of shoes FSR would pick for whoever got worst take
This is a good interview
Man this was legendary Austin is the king and OG of DIY
Joe Matt & Dunne are podcast naturals
“This is raised from nothing “
the most important quote of the night. S/o Austin, love bro keep creating!
From nothing??? His parents are MULTI MILLIONAIRES who have paid for everything for him,......and hes still 10999999% WACK
i was wondering if i should go after the air trainer utilities? i hesitated and now my size is just on the secondary market, i can find some honeydews at pretty much regular price but not in abundance and the dark smoke pretty much the same. the corianders are the ones though an seem to command higher prices at the time. i also didn't see those on nike or during the roll out. but i am wondering if people think a better opportunity will come up with these? i like all 3 an the honeydew is a sleeper might be my 2nd favorite. the saqouns however i feel like i should try an get sooner then later because those might get up even higher then they are now.
Miss those soho days man things have changed soo much it hurts
Gucci: Let's do a collab? Asspizza: Nah.
austin at the end said see you next week. 🤣
It’s not often you find people who are not prepared to compromise one jot, Austin seems to be one of those people. Seems super focussed on his thing and his thing only. He deserves success for that fact alone.
Love it!! Asspizza is brilliant.
This was fire
You can tell AssPizza was hurt when they all said they’d pass on the 730s …
I mean they're also all 10 years older than him
@@slimyman116 i get it but still you could tell it hit a little …
You peeped there kicks right? That should explain it all, wrong demographic. Keep grinding Austin.

I'd rock the 730s over any of their shoes rn and i havnt even followed him like that

Authentic interview but the shoe is a uptempo basically 😂
@@Theworldasweknowit authentic like he kept it real and himself
I’ve been buying old FootScapes from eBay for years now for really cheap too. Every time I rock a pair people always ask about them. Nike definitely need to bring them back

Hella content with this guy. You could tell they had their questions ready!’
“Largest footwear company in the world doesn’t know what it’s doing”…*newest project is a blatant copy*
Nike keeps releasing the same silhouettes over and over. When is the last time nike actually designed something revolutionary. Im not saying asspizzas shoes are crazy but I understand what hes saying.
@@slimyman116 nike drops alot of innovative running shoes, just because things are not popping up next to a jordan or af1 drop doenst mean there isn’t anything happening
My thoughts to, when you invest in molds and stuff by not starting from scratch instead of making inspired shoes. I think he awnsers the question during the interview. He isn’t a designer he cant draw. He thinks about concepts in his mind and pictures it on things he knows. There is the difference between a shoe designer and a entrepreneur.
Exactly
L take; what about nigo? Don’t be so quick to judge
This interview made his Asspizza merch go up 🔥🔥🎃😈 my boy got this f life
When he brought up the hurricane shoes after saying he wouldn't wear the ballers i asked myself if complex really deserved this interview

“If they give me a cease and desist, I’m lit.” - asspizza 2022 (42:42)

42:58 whenever Welty brings up a counterargument or gets frustrated over something usually i’m like bro just stop. But in this case, i’m with Welty…asspizza kid over here doesn’t want legal trouble but wouldn’t mind it because it would be legendary. Probably the dumbest thing i’ve heard in a minute.
Also, 1:07:17. This “rant” of his alone is a bit of an overstretch. Respect for his optimism and confidence, but like Nike Adidas Salomon etc have all lost it and don’t know what they’re doing?! They’ve been innovating for the past 50+ years across the board from tech to fashion amongst other areas. His stuff doesn’t bring anything innovative to the table, it’s merely an art form expression which is cool
Let’s be real, no one wants to deal with legal issues, kind of obvious. If he hasn’t had any legal beef, he obv doesn’t really think it’s legendary. Don’t take it too seriously.
Totally agree. Usually people that say “wouldn’t mind legal trouble” is a dead give away hasn’t even been anywhere near “lawyering up”. Like why “flex”? No need for it. I’m glad Welty pushed back on him on that phrase he did but Welty was way too nice on him. Anyone else, would have grilled asspizza for it.
He’s a fatter, more tattooed version of that dorky Mischief kid from a few months back that Welty ripped apart
dude you just aren't cool it's fine
You got the Beckhams on sneaker shopping?
Good to see them branching out from the quote on quote sneaker industry for guest. I would love to to see them get kool kiy next

Great episode
I just don't get Kerwin or Asspizza. There are definitely some vibey youngsters, but Asspizza gives me nouveau-juggalo feel. But this episode showed me his mind is more fascinating than his aesthetics. Also, it is really impressive that he did his shoe.
The anti-college talk is some of the most misguided advice I’ve heard in a while. Not everyone needs or wants to go to school for fashion but some people do. It’s entirely an individual decision because everyone has different learning preferences. It’s so strange how so many young people in fashion look up to certain designers but bash formal education. They act as if Raf, Dries, Yohji, Issey, Yves and MANY MANY more didn’t go to school. School is very valuable and even for people who don’t want to go, you’ll still likely need similar tools to learn your craft that you’d use in school (books, apprenticeships, etc)
I think the point is that a lot of creative directors working for these big brands that actually make cool stuff. Are college drop outs and people who didn’t go to college. That’s how they’re able to create unconventional pieces that change the game. College isn’t for everyone but you definitely need those educated people in particular fields on your team. But a lot of the times. The person comin up with the cool creative ideas aren’t the people with conventional education.
@@3evftem902 this is just factually incorrect. There’s always been head creatives who didn’t have formal or directly formal education in fashion. But to act as if the majority of the past/current head creatives didn’t get formal education is just wrong. Kim Jones, Riccardo Tisci, Alessandro Michele, Maria Chiuri, etc ALL got formal education. And as for the most creative people in fashion, that brings to mind Rei, Yohji, Issey, Demeulemeester, McQueen, Margiela, etc. They all went to school.
Again, I’m in no way saying it’s necessary but let’s not distort the facts. Acting like school is unnecessary or dumb for fashion is wrong, period. The majority of the leaders and higher ups in the industry studied formally. I could also name notable designers/creatives who didn’t go to school but again the majority of the people heading big companies/houses and making the boldest and longest lasting creative strides did study.
@@3evftem902 it’s also worth noting that formal education in fashion doesn’t strictly tell you how to design. It much more so teaches the principles and elements of art and how they relate to fashion design or fashion marketing etc. And, having a well rounded information basis in textiles, construction, sewing techniques, technology, color theory, terminology etc is extremely valuable. A lot of creative people make unconventional products after learning how to twist and rework the conventional (like Margiela). Your mind can only branch so far without at least a base level of knowledge in the components that encompass fashion design. It’s usually why a lot of the streetwear designers are so one note (not a bad thing, just noteworthy)
Totally agree. Especially for such a practical skill.
@@guwopman3503Why are you trying to so hard to make it seem like you need to go to College for Fashion? In my opinion people like Azzpizza who didn't go to College has some of the coolest designs and you can say by all the hype he gets. Sometimes there's no conventional line to make for things like fashion where everything is subject to someone's personal opinion on if they like it or not. There's no linear line in Fashion you won't learn things all from a book sometimes you have to go out and get the experience in the real workd.
