The sad story is that most basketball legends who actually saw Wilt played keep talking about how incredible Wilt was. Meanwhile kids or even grown men who don't even see a single game of him played, keep disrespecting and discrediting Wilt. A tall guy who only played against short white guys. That's how the public viewed Wilt these days. Truly the most underrated and disrespected sports legend of all time
its b/c we live in a howard stern culture.... its about being snarky & trying to up someone else verbally.... its not about respect and an objective analysis of stats, films etc... lebron, jordan, magic, bird, kareem are stellar all time players. it doesnt get better. However, wilt was like a sci fi movie of a guy brought to earth from another planet. thats no joke. esp before his knee surgeries wh/ were devestating to his mobility and hops....a 67 wilt, is goat & then you can stop down from there. he would dominate any center at that point. & if you got him pissed he would just annihilate you. he was complete freak of athleticism and power w/ a lot of subtle big man skills in the blocks. & a defensive, board presence on the same level. hes bigger then ruth, jim brown or ali in re to athletic prowess vs his peers and those who have followed.
I’m 13 I talked to many people in RUclips coz they’re always saying the 60s suck.. I mean this is the logic 35 yo wilt with knee injury dominated MVP Kareem Old Kareem dominated Hakeem Hakeem dominated shaq 38 yo obese shaq is still averaging 17 a game in 2008
Well, more people are starting to acknowledge Wilts greatness. Joel Embid thinks that Wilt is greatest center of all time. I think that Kareem is becoming the most underrated center of all time.
@@davonbenson4361 Ur dumb af man I talked to many people in RUclips and they still think wilt is not great he played w the plumbers I think the reason why wilt’s hater say he played in a weak era bcz the fans of wilt including embiid use numbers stats to support him if they say 35 yo w knee injury wilt out rebound MVP Kareem And wilt beat the 7 HOF Celtics and in 60s the averaged height is 6:6, and show them the video of 50+ yo wilt shaking Shaqs hand to prove wilt is fucking strong and how 40+ yo wilt dominated as in dominate fresh man magic king worthy and ac green (wilt blocked every shot) etc etc
All those Wilt Chamberlain stories are fucking unreal The more you know about him, the more amazed about how great an athlete he is He is literally a Superman in real life
I think some younger people need a background. Even today lebron and co. play pick up games today at UCLA. Magic in the 80's had them a lot. The coach didn't explain enough. Wilt was in his late 40's, they played full court, Magic won, you heard the story. Wilt said let's play half court. Without so much room to avoid him, he swatted many. I think Wilt was in better shape after he retired a few years.
Except this story is complete bullshit. AC Green was a sophomore in high school when this story supposedly took place. Don’t believe everything you hear about Wilt Chamberlain.
@brum23 the pickup game was in the early 1980s. AC Green entered NBA in 1985. He played college starting 1981. He was a sophomore in Highschool in the late 1970s.
That is saying something because Hawk and Jerry were great players too. Hawkins was a playground legend...but Wilt was simply Wilt. The Dipper...Almost Paul Bunyan like. I saw Wilt play against Wes Unseld and the Baltimore Bullets as a kid (with Earl Monroe). Wilt dominated that game, and Unseld was a dominant rebounder...but Wilt was at another level. I have never seen another player with his presence who changed every facet of the game when he was in it.
@@stuarth4296 Hope u know Wes Unseld from Louisville Male was only 6'6", and he became a much better player when they signed Big E, Elvin Hayes to play pf. along side of him
I am 56 and seen all of them play except Mikan. I saw Wilt as a kid...he was the most dominating and athletic player in the history of the game and easily the greatest scorer and rebounder. Most people do not realize he was a great shot blocker, had world class strength and speed, and one year led the NBA in assists (yes a center led the league in assists).
Just to emphasize how great Wilt was: he retired from competitive NBA ball in 1973 (age 36). Who else with that kind of layoff (7-8 years) at that age (43-44) could dominate current NBA players? All the MJ, Kobe, LeBron, Hakeem, Curry fans need to start respecting Wilt and accept that he was as good if not better than them.
Well said! Man & it's cuz they can only see Wilt in an hour or two of clips. ((thanks to mainly the Wilt Chamberlain Archive-channel)) If we had the 62 season of Wilt , all the games , in color & clarity (so people would watch 'em) , there would be NO doubt..in ANY1's mind. I truly believe that! Wilt is the GOAT-TEP-OTEWP! .... " That ever played -Or that ever will play !
In terms of dominance and individual accomplishments, Wilt was the GOAT! In terms of team success, Russell is the GOAT. In terms of career accomplishments, Kareem is the GOAT. In terms of all around play, Oscar, Magic, Bird and LeBron all have a case for GOAT. In terms of media backing, popularity, TV ratings and money, MJ is the GOAT. In terms of defensive play, maybe Russell is GOAT. MJ is the GOAT at SG. When you try and put all of these categories together, it's difficult to say who the GOAT is. Mikan, Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Oscar, MJ, and LeBron all have a legitimate case.
I know this Larry Brown story abut Wilt since many years ago, I used to tell this story and other stories to people when they dismissed Wilt's greatness, they didn't believe me. Now, here it's the video with Larry Brown telling the story himself.
Kobe was better at certain things but overall LeBron is more diverse. LeBron can take average players to the finals. Kobe has a different mentality and needed other top players to get to the finals. Kobe was a better clutch scorer late in games because he was so confident and had more of a killer instinct. LeBron is more of a "team" player but has become MJ/Kobe like in the last few years late in games. If I was drafting, I would pick LeBron to build a team around. If I had to pick one of them to take a last second shot, I would pick Kobe.
Very true Sheep Dog, and an incredible accomplishment; The only other player that I believe blocked the un-blockable was a healthy, young Bill Walton at a pick up game in the early 70's when he was at UCLA. The two became quite good friends after that.
There's a really easy to find video on youtube of Wilt blocking him two or three times in one possession. He's the only guy that ever blocked it playing him on-ball. Thurmond blocked him on help defense once, I think.
RoninWaffle And worth noting that was old Wilt, after a knee injury and years of hard play. Young Wilt was quicker on the draw and could get much higher. You can find clips of him grabbing shots from really high up. Young Wilt would have dominated the young Kareem that old Wilt defended.
I consider Jerry West a pretty good judge of talent. He not only played with and against Wilt; he was a general manager for many years after that. So it's not like he's been in a cave since the 70's or anything. And he has said that if Wilt were playing today in his prime, he would lead the league in scoring, rebounds, and blocked shots. Also said he'd like to see some of today's centers go up against him in his prime; said they'd be embarrassed. He should know.
Yeah and Rick Barry said basically the same thing and said if you were building a team Wilt would be the center you would start with because he was the greatest center to ever play the game. Yet people act like these statements do not exist. Barry has seen everyone play from Russell to LeBron. They once asked Earl Monroe and Clyde Frazier who was the greatest player to ever play LeBron or Michael Jordan and they both answered "Wilt."
@buckfan1969 Jerry West quote was in 1989. When he talked about today, it was 1989. Anyway, any NBA great could dominate in any given era [even today]. They're great because they can adapt to everything and Wilt Chamberlain is one of the most gifted athlete ever.
In the history of basketball i have never seen anyone that was almost 7'3 in sneakers and could run the floor, not goofiy like most huge players that just use they're height and 3 point shots. back then Shaq would foul out in the 1st quarter. They didn't let Wilt just slam people back for an easy dunk, that's why they were more post moves.
vin russo knows. Shaq made a living off of throwing shoulders and elbows into smaller guys. They called guys for that stuff back then, Wilt especially. If Wilt could've traded places with Shaq, I think he could've sustained Shaq's peak performance years for most of a career without much trouble. Like 35/15/4/4 for a career. Unlike Shaq, he never got out of shape.
My fave Wilt stat? One season he averaged MORE THAN 48 minutes a game. I believe his average was 48.5...do you understand? Every minute of regulation time, plus overtime. All men are NOT created equal.
To just show how great of an athlete wilt chamberlain was he wasn’t just HOF in basketball, he was also a HOF in volleyball. My man played volleyball until his early 40s and still made it into the the USA volleyball HOF. Now that’s what I call a world class athlete.
Chamberlain was the greatest scorer, the greatest rebounder, the greatest shot blocker, and the greatest at assists for a big man in the history of the game.
WILT was great alright, but Bill Russell won 11 rings, and Wilt only beat Russell one time during 66-67 season for Philly, 1st NBA TEAM WITH A BLACK STARTING 5, THEY BEAT THE CELTICS 4-1
@@JomoDaMusicMan Teams win titles, not individual players. Russell's Celtics teams were better than Chamberlain's teams. If Wilt had played for those Celtics teams, he would have 11 rings. Russell was a great player, but Chamberlain was better.
@@9Ballr NO he wouldn;t now that 66-67 philly team was just as good as any of those Celtics Teams and he won only one, that Laker team with Baylor, West, Goodrich was better than any of the Celtics teams. Yes, they put minor players like Don Nelson and 7 more in hof, but they won't shit. YES SAM JONES, HONDO BELONG IN HOF BUT THE OTHERS IS A JOKE
@@JomoDaMusicMan I disagree. I think if you put Chamberlain on those Celtics teams that won 11 titles, they still win 11 titles. There was no facet of the game that Wilt was not at least as good at as Russell, and in most he was better than Russell. If you say that they don't win those titles with Wilt instead of Russell, you're saying Russell was a better player than Wilt, and I just don't buy that.
@@9Ballr I didn't say Russell was a better individual player than Wilt, but he was a better team player. Russell was Taylor made for the Celtics. I saw an interview with WILT, AND HE STATED HE DON'T THINK HE WOULD'VE WON ALL THOSE RINGS IF HE PLAYED FOR THE CELTICS. RUSSEL WAS A MOTIVATOR HE MADE SCRUBBS LIKE DON NELSON PLAY, BILL SHARMON, FRANK RANSEY, TOM HEINSOHN PLAY BETTER. GOD KNOWS THOSE SCRUBS HAS NO BUSINESS IN HOF. WILT WAS TWICE THE INDIVIDUAL PLAYER AS RUSSELL, I WATCHED ONE GAME HE PULLED DOWN 55 REBS ON, YES, THE GREAT BILL RUSSELL. NO CONTEST RUSSELL COULDN'T SHOOT. WILT COULD SCORE AT WILL. NEITHER COULD HIT FREE THROWS, 50% CAREER FOR BOTH. BUT RUSSELL WAS A WINNER, WILT WAS NOT
Whether you think MJ was the only player better than Wilt like I do, nobody can deny that Wilt was the strongest, most athletic, most dominate player to ever play. Wilt's legacy is harmed by his quitting at 36 years old when he was still one of the top couple of players in the league. If he had played the 6 or 7 more years he was capable of, I guarantee he would have won 2 or 3 more rings with the Lakers.
Wilt is the GOAT simply because of the fact that hes the strongest human being ever ppl dont know how strong he could grab LeBron with his left hand and move lebron like a paper doll thats how strong he was
According to Arnold Schwarzenegger Wilt was the strongest guy he's been around...this is an international body builder talking...now I know that is different than strong man contest, but I think a bit of hyperbole is in order for Wilt given he has dozens of people speaking this stuff into existence...
Norman Bates Strength isn't everything, but Wilt had height, length, speed, stamina, etc. This guy was like an upgraded version of Shaq fused with Hakeem.
Wilt was the Lebron of his time, bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic than anyone before him at his position, and was something no one had ever seen before. I think Wilt is the greatest basketball player of all time, and Jordan isn't even close at second. Jordan could be slowed down on offense at times, Wilt was unstoppable.
Zachary Licht maybe physically wilt was better, but in terms of scoring, mental toughness, skill, and combination with speed and athleticism, no one touches Jordan.
I dont think it was pure coincidence that blocks and steals were counted right after Wilt Chamberlain retired Wilt Chamberlains last season 72/73 Blocks and steals being official stats 73/74
Did you guys understand what Larry Brown just Explained.he.just said wilt Chamberlain he was Blocking everybody shot include magic Johnson Plus the others great players and already wilt was43.wilt Chamberlain Larry Brown is right Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest Player Ever in Basketball history.no.doubt Bill Russell he's Great too.but .those rings he.not earning by him Self that belong to.that team was7more.hall fame In.that.team.wilt.he.was.just1.men.army is.still. Won two championship that's amazing. Let me tell you something Wilt Chamberlain always going to be #.1.greatest player ever period
Wilt was great, but losing 10 times to Russell, and all those teams Wilt was on was not lousy, his 66-67 team consisted of starters Chet the Jet Walker, Hal Greer both HOF'ers, Lucious Jackson and Wally Jones along wih 6th man Billy Cunningham ALSO A HOF'ER. THAT TEAM SHOULD'VE WON MORE THAN ONE RING, ALSO WITH LAKERS HE TEAMED UP WITH JERRY WEST, ELGIN BAYLOR AND GAIL GOODRICH, ALL HOF'ers and won only won ring, GOT BEAT TWICE BY KNICKS WHO HAD BONNIE & CLYDE, AND PICKED UP EARL THE PEARL. WILT WAS AN UNDER ACHIEVER FOR RINGS
I believe Wilt was the most dominant.Even if you averaged 50 points 25 rebounds a game among 3rd. graders for whole season(lol),he did this against grown professional athletes. If he played his game like Bill.Russell.,he would have more rings. Also Russell and Wilt averaged 22 rebounds career.Wilt only one to average 30point 20 rebounds career. My My Rushmore:Wilt,Bill Russell,Magic,Jordan(even though he didn't win any until Pippen)and LeBron(championship s with 3 different teams, going to finals I think 7times consecutive and 9 altogether
Jeremiah Graham your so stupid all yall Jordan suckers lebron suckers need to really study the history the rules ,,, Wilt played against big bodies you jus don't know dumbass
Wow!!! Wilt the Stilt number 1 look at the facts 50 point throughout a whole season when arguably played in the toughest dirtiest defense was allowed Remember there was no 3 sec defensive rule in the paint. Wilt stated the 4 or 5 guys would be waitin in the paint for him check it out
Wilt was coaching a aba team in 1974 and a ball got stuck at top side of the back board....he came late to practice and asked players what was wrong ... he took off his shoes, jumped up and knocked ball down according to Caldwell jones ....also had super human strength and stamina
It just goes to show that when you want to know the truth....ask the ones who have been involved in the game. To Micheal Jordan's credit, he doesn't consider himself the greatest because he says he didn't get the opportunity to play against the legends of the past. Respect due. It takes a team to win championships but if we're arguing individual talent, Wilt's numbers are ridiculously good.
Individually he is number 1, but it's not tennis or golf, it's a team sport, so he's not among top 10 all-time as a team player. Bill Russell most amazing quote ever: when asked the question, 'You, Micheal Jordan, Wilt, who do you pick?' he answers, "You pick Bill Russell... for the reason, he will never distort your defense or your offense..." Players like Iverson, a young Jordan, Westbrook, distort their team and the team cannot play floor IQ properly - there is no team glue!
But when Wilt had talent put around him and Wilt was focused more on passing to get the offense going, and defense, his 1967 76ers team set the record at the time for the most wins in a season and went on to defeat Bill Russell's dynasty Celtics team to win the championship. So Wilt proved right there that he could be an amazing team player if given the great talent around him and a coach that knew what to do with him.
Well he got within 1 or 2 points of winning the championship against Russell's Celtics multiple times even when he was playing as the 1st option scorer on the team, so its not like he didn't have success playing that way. Just came up slightly short on plays that were pretty much out of his control.
There's a great interview with Wilt, where the guy asks him how he would fare in today's (at that time) NBA. Wilt says well, the game has changed a lot, I figure I would average about 25 points per game. Interviewer asks, that few? Wilt responds, yeah, I mean I'm 50 years old.
If given the opportunity to pick anybody who ever played in a mock draft, Wilt would be the overwhelming pick by most GMS, because he had much more ability than anybody else who ever set foot on a Basketball Ball Court!
Wilt and Dennis Rodman were the two greatest athletes who ever played in the NBA. 40+ Wilt dominating prime players doesn't surprise me. The man had one season were he didn't get substituted a single time and played all games, this tells you a lot about the capabilities he had as an athlete, the physical attributes needed to be as great as Wilt was on his position and his talent was just added on top of it. It bothers me a great deal nowadays NBA generation (not only fans, even basketball historians or self-proclaimed ones, journalists and players) downplays his achievements. While in 99% of the cases, the man usually becomes a legend the legend the mythos and most of the stories + achievement are heavily exaggerated Wilt is in the 1% were it is absolutely not. The NBA family has to realize Chamberlain was a 1 in a 100 year athlete, bigger than life (not because of his physical presence, it just added to it).
WILT, actually has well over 200 triple doubles and dozens of quad's, because they didn't count blocks when he was playing, bill Russell also have approx 200 triple, big O, has many more because of his steals and he also had many blocks playing against lesser guards
Oscar rarely blocked shots because he didn't want to get faked into the air and get called for fouls. Thus he isn't a good pick for "potential quadruple double" because it's not too likely he had many double digit block games. Really in the early 60s only two people blocked shots -- WIlt and Russell (until Nate Thurmond came into the league).
I saw a stat that said they calculated the blocks Wilt had from the full game footage tapes that exist, and it said he averaged 8.8 blocks in those games
@@bah-nah I ACTUALLY SAW GAMES WHERE WILT HAD 10 BLOCKS IN ONE QUARTER. I SAW SERIES WHEN CINCY ROYALS AGAINST RUSSELL, WHEN IN ONE DEFENSIVE SERIES HE BLOCKED EVERY PLAYER OF THE ROYALS AT LEAST ONCE INCLUDING BIG O. I THINK HE HAD 8 BLOCKS IN THAT ONE DEFENSIVE SERIES. AND KILLED OUR CHANCES FOR THE PLAYOFFS
I heard bill Walton say in an interview one time that his biggest regret was never playing against wilt in those pickup games... I assume it was because Walton was injured so much, I doubt he'd pass up a chance to go against wilt if he was healthy. .. but yeah, stories of those pickup games involving wilt were legendary even as they were happening because of what wilt was doing even at a relatively advanced age
Walton was rarely healthy enough to play in offseason pickup games. Almost from the first couple years he was in the NBA he had nagging knee injuries that hampered him. And of course his foot problems. Even in his MVP season with the Blazers he missed like 25 games.
Wilt is the greatest athlete in modern civilization to this day. He’s before my time but it’s obvious but everyone’s in love with Michael (which is understandable) but Wilt is better.
Looks like Larry Brown has just informed THE WORLD of who the GOAT in Basketball is! With years comes knowledge, wisdom and Larry Brown watching The Big Dipper growing up, played and coached against a Big Fro Julius Erving (Dr. J) in the ABA, coached against MJ & was 'The Answer's Coach (Allen Iverson)). Know I finally know who the GOAT is of BBall
Wilt was the G.O.A.T talent, he was just gentle! If he had the attitude of many athletes who are seemingly obsessed with competition and winning, there' would be no doubt who's the greatest athlete ever was,. not just basketball player!
Based on footage I have seen, and comments by contemporary players, he took it easy because he didn't want to hurt people, but in my opinion he also was competing against himself, and that's why he mostly played a finesse game, ie that unstoppable fadeaway he liked to hit off the backboard. Otherwise it would have been too easy and he would have been bored.
The 76er's tried to coax him out of retirement at 45 years old. His last season in his late 30's, 38 I think he averaged 16 points and 19 rebounds!! And he wasn't the scorer.Jerry West and Gail Woodrich were the scorers. He had 26 blocks one game. He had 55 rebounds against Bill Russell, and scored 63 points against him, and Russell was 6'10 or 6'11 and basically considered the best behind Wilt back then. People that don't know much about him, think of his dunks and finger rolls. But his bread and butter was that fade away, off the board shot that was impossible to stop.
Mario van holle Russell definitely did well against Wilt at times and was the best defender of that generation and probably would be now too. But Wilt definitely did whatever he damn well wanted to at times
of course I realize, 6'9" to 7'0", is a lot closer than most think, most players over 6'10" was listed as 7'0", I watched Lebron standing eye to eye with Bill and they looked the same size, but again, of course, Bill has aged and kinda stooped over.
Got to talk to Wilt as a kidd cause he and Willie Nalls owned a Ralph's market in South Central Los Angeles (Avalon&103rd St.) He actually did invest back into black communities when he played... Also be noted that Wilt has a excellent track and field guy in college at Kanas and he could out lift Mr. Universe ...
I've seen them all. He is the GOAT. He still has something like 63 records that still stand. OK he didn't win a lot of championship but we are talking the BEST player of all times. If MJ or James would of come into the paint on him, he would embarrassed them. They say he didn't play against anyone. FALSE. He played against some of the best centers of all time. Most of whom are in the HOF.
The 3 point line actually created more space for Bigs to work in the paint. The problem is 99% of todays bigs don't want to do the dirty work in the the Post. They'd rather be jump shooters.
One of the greatest stories I've ever heard. He was legendary almost fictional cause of the things he did most people can't imagine all the records he still holds today and how he changed the game not how the game changed for him like MJ.
That is a great story. Larry was the coach at UCLA Magic's first two seasons in the NBA. Worthy and Bryon Scott were still in college and AC Green was still in high school. Fun fact, Larry Brown likes to hear himself tell stories.
Instead of A. C. Green, I think he meant David Greenwood, a Los Angeles native, who played at UCLA from 1975-79 and who was the second pick in the 1979 NBA draft (after Magic Johnson).
Blocks weren´t officially counted when Wilt was playing, but in his 112 games where blocked shot data was recorded, Wilt averaged 8.8 BPG (the most official recorded BPG in a season is 5.6 BPG by Mark Eaton).
Pls remember that during those days offensive fouls were easily- called.the moment you put down your shoulders against the oppenent then its offensive foul.thats why wilt has to do fade- away jumper. Come to think of it,wilt never fouled out. It means he have done the scoring very efficiently w/o fouling offensively. What i mean is, how much more in todays game when they allow the shoulder's down, the banging-move like shaq does.wilt can also do that (maybe even better bcoz wilt is stronger and could jump higher), wilt could justify what he said he will score 50 points per game on this era.
There are a lot of comments about the accuracy of this story. First off, all top college players and high school players on the Westcoast played in LA in the summer against the pros back then. Heck, Magic was playing pros like George Gervin at 14 years old (Google Bill Simmons interview with Gervin). Second, Scott is from LA and played at ASU from 1979 to 1983. So it is quite likely he was home for the summer playing with the pros. Third, Green was also on the Westcoast at OSU from 1981 to 1985 and also could have been in LA playing summer ball with the pros. Worthy met Magic on his recruiting trip to MSU and could have been playing in LA in the summer as well.
I am a huuuuge LBJ fan, but even I acknowledge that there is not even an argument about who the GOAT is. Wilt is/was so clearly head ans shoulders above everyone that he played with and everyone that has come after him. The only thing people can say is that LBJ is prolly gona play like 20 seasons, so he wins in longevity, but looking at their peaks, Wilt is so far above everyone else.
RogerFederer777 wilt is maybe the best but michael jordan is apsolutly goat for 3 bilion people and that would be like this forever, lebron who? michael jordan today and right now is more popular than all active players.
I’m actually impressed the 19 who voted it down. That they had the prerequisite IQ to operate/navigate their way into a comment. Them being single digit IQ and all
Larry Brown only coached at UCLA for two season, 1979-81. He would not have been in the UCLA men's gym in 1986. He misremembered, and probably meant David Greenwood, who had been an all-American at UCLA and was then playing in the NBA.
People say Bo and/or Deion were the two best athletes we've ever seen. The more you learn about Wilt, the more you slowly come to realize he was probably the greatest athlete ANYONE has ever seen. Truly amazing.
He might have been referring to Dave Greenwood, not AC Green. Greenwood graduated from UCLA in 1979 and made the all NBA rookie team in 1980. He was a pretty good player in the NBA, look up his stats. He was also part of the 1990 NBA championship Pistons team.
George Wagner I think you're right, A.C. Green was at Oregon St. from 1981 thru 1985, and this happened before then, Larry Brown thought "Green", and everyone automatically thought A.C. Green, because of his Lakers association, instead of thinking David Greenwood, who was a two time 1st team All American at UCLA his junior and senior seasons...
Scott is from LA and played at ASU from 1979 to 1983. So it is quite likely he was home for the summer playing with the pro like all top college players did back then. Green was also on the Westcoast at OSU from 1981 to 1985 and also could have been in LA playing summer ball with the pros. Worthy met Magic on his recruiting trip to MSU and could have been playing in LA in the summer as well.
Larry Brown coached at UCLA from 1979 to 1981, so he had to have been referring to David Greenwood. I highly doubt that Magic Johnson would have had a teenage A. C. Green playing on the same pick-up team with himself, Bernard King, Byron Scott, and James Worthy when he wanted to defeat Wilt Chamberlain.
Wilt was weeeell ahead of his time, Bill Russell was an Olympic level high jumper but was 6'9, Wilt and M.J are tied for the highest vertical leap in NBA history both with 48 inches max vertical
Wilt Chamberlain was a world class athlete that comes along every 3-400 years. He dominated track & field, high jump, & volleyball. After watching Wilt bench press 600 lbs several times in an Olympic hotel gym, Arnold Swartznagger the world's strongest man, left the weight room & never came back when Wilt was there. Wilt would've dominated any era of NBA basketball especially this one.
Magic, King, Scott, Green and Worthy will never corroborate Larry Browns story on Wilt blocking every shot simply to save face. 43 year old man playing against NBA stars in their prime and shuts them down. Ouch! Legend.
Wilt goat, the one stat people always forget is he averaged 1.4 women per day. people talk about scoring 20k points, well Wilt scored 20k women, nobody else can say that, bona fide legend.
The realisation of what this story means is just stunning. Terrifying, even. I have always been adamant that Michael Jordan was the Goat. I'm starting to wonder...
Wilt started his career in 1959...from what I've heard the guy was a hall of fame volleyball player after his NBA days and was running marathons in his 50's. He (if he wanted to) could have been a defensive minded center up until literally 1990. He could have played in 5 decades competitively. Imagine the stats he would have had. Probably over 50k points 40k rebounds 5k blocks...obscene mind boggling stats.

I think i'm the only 11 year old that knows Wilt's greatness
I’m 13 I talked to many people in RUclips coz they’re always saying the 60s suck..
I mean this is the logic
35 yo wilt with knee injury dominated MVP Kareem
Old Kareem dominated Hakeem
Hakeem dominated shaq
38 yo obese shaq is still averaging 17 a game in 2008
Well, more people are starting to acknowledge Wilts greatness. Joel Embid thinks that Wilt is greatest center of all time. I think that Kareem is becoming the most underrated center of all time.
@@davonbenson4361
Ur dumb af man
I talked to many people in RUclips and they still think wilt is not great he played w the plumbers I think the reason why wilt’s hater say he played in a weak era bcz the fans of wilt including embiid use numbers stats to support him if they say
35 yo w knee injury wilt out rebound MVP Kareem
And wilt beat the 7 HOF Celtics and in 60s the averaged height is 6:6, and show them the video of 50+ yo wilt shaking Shaqs hand to prove wilt is fucking strong and how 40+ yo wilt dominated as in dominate fresh man magic king worthy and ac green (wilt blocked every shot) etc etc
Wilt Chamberlain, the true G.O.A.T. in any era
All those Wilt Chamberlain stories are fucking unreal
The more you know about him, the more amazed about how great an athlete he is
He is literally a Superman in real life
I think some younger people need a background.
Wilt was probably the best athlete in human history- going back 200 000 years
@@brum23 Except when you're old enough to remember it!
I saw Wilt, Jerry West and Connie Hawkins play an exhibition game in 1969. Wilt was the greatest athlete I ever saw.
How old are you guys? Are you on your 60s?
@@stuarth4296 Hope u know Wes Unseld from Louisville Male was only 6'6", and he became a much better player when they signed Big E, Elvin Hayes to play pf. along side of him
Damn, I don’t even think that Wilt was in his prime in 1969. That’s incredible.
Guess you never saw Scalabrine play.
& you saw the wounded wilt.... those who witnessed the 67 wilt saw a super natural force of nature.
He was the best shot blocker in the history of the game, no doubt
He also holds the record for most poon tang tagged by an nba player !
George Wagner i respect your knowledge. LeBron isn't better than Kobe though
Wilt Chamberlain was the first player to block Kareem Abdul Jabbar's skyhook. Now that's saying something...
only player
Very true Sheep Dog, and an incredible accomplishment; The only other player that I believe blocked the un-blockable was a healthy, young Bill Walton at a pick up game in the early 70's when he was at UCLA. The two became quite good friends after that.
gtfoh bill walton aint got shit on wilt. he cant even block larry bird
That's so awesome wilt is easily the greatest athlete in the history of the world
Jerry West's opinion is good enough for me! He is NBA royalty...universally respected.
*and assists if u give him another scorer
@buckfan1969
Jerry West quote was in 1989. When he talked about today, it was 1989.
Anyway, any NBA great could dominate in any given era [even today]. They're great because they can adapt to everything and Wilt Chamberlain is one of the most gifted athlete ever.
And the legend of Wilt Chamberlain grows....
Legend grows? Any educated basketball follower knows thst wilt was a God of Bb. Jordan on that mythical level aswell.

WILT was great alright, but Bill Russell won 11 rings, and Wilt only beat Russell one time during 66-67 season for Philly, 1st NBA TEAM WITH A BLACK STARTING 5, THEY BEAT THE CELTICS 4-1

In my opinion the Greatest Player to ever play in the NBA
Wilt is the real GOAT, no question about it
I saw Chamberlain play many times. I have never seen a player as dominant as Wilt to this day. No Michael, Kobe, Magic-not anyone period.
Cut the crap. All his avgs was going down hard in the playoffs when it mattered the most!
Not always true. He is the only player to average 20/20 in playoffs.
Not even Bill Russell, Bob Pettit could do that.
People seem to forget about, or underestimate Wilt. He was the MAN.
I love watching all the videos about Wilt on RUclips, again and again. He is truly one of a kind, ever.
Wilt is the GOAT simply because of the fact that hes the strongest human being ever ppl dont know how strong he could grab LeBron with his left hand and move lebron like a paper doll thats how strong he was
According to Arnold Schwarzenegger Wilt was the strongest guy he's been around...this is an international body builder talking...now I know that is different than strong man contest, but I think a bit of hyperbole is in order for Wilt given he has dozens of people speaking this stuff into existence...
doesnt mean your strong you can dominate....lol
Wilt is on another level. Dominates any era

Wow!!! Wilt the Stilt number 1
look at the facts 50 point throughout a whole season when arguably played in the toughest dirtiest defense was allowed
Remember there was no 3 sec defensive rule in the paint. Wilt stated the 4 or 5 guys would be waitin in the paint for him check it out
Wow, great story on Wilt. Amazing.
Love this story, miss LB in Philly!
There was one fact that players in the 60s and 70s knew: don't make Wilt mad because if you do, Wilt would take over, game over. 🔥
WILT will ALWAYS be the REAL G.O.A.T!!
You are right about that and he was just an average shooter outside the paint
Wilt was coaching a aba team in 1974 and a ball got stuck at top side of the back board....he came late to practice and asked players what was wrong ... he took off his shoes, jumped up and knocked ball down according to Caldwell jones ....also had super human strength and stamina
Now that's another insane story we can add to his resume...
Wilt for me is the goat.
Red Ace yep, unforrunately he wanted this few times
Well he got within 1 or 2 points of winning the championship against Russell's Celtics multiple times even when he was playing as the 1st option scorer on the team, so its not like he didn't have success playing that way. Just came up slightly short on plays that were pretty much out of his control.
Just remember his Lakers won 33 straight games in 71-72 they won 69 games for the season ; a feat not yet surpassed.
There's a great interview with Wilt, where the guy asks him how he would fare in today's (at that time) NBA.
Wilt says well, the game has changed a lot, I figure I would average about 25 points per game.

Rodman? Meh
Wilt is the only player in NBA history with a 20-20-20 game.
Dean Calloway Russell westbrook got one actually
Wilt was a beast
Jeez, I wish there was some footage of those games.
Wow!! Wilt was amazing
Walton is another guy...if he was healthy maybe talking top 3 center all time. He was like a bigger kevin McHale mixed w birds IQ.
I LOVE this story!!!! Thanks 4 the up-load!
Wilt is the greatest athlete in modern civilization to this day. He’s before my time but it’s obvious but everyone’s in love with Michael (which is understandable) but Wilt is better.
Lol Wilt would have a career average of a triple double if BLOCKS were a stat. 26 in one game
I sometimes hear or read that russell took Wilt to school ...how can you take someone to school with 20 + rebs and 50+ points ?
Mario van holle Russell definitely did well against Wilt at times and was the best defender of that generation and probably would be now too. But Wilt definitely did whatever he damn well wanted to at times
Russell was actually 6"9"
JomoDaMusicMan 6'9" without shoes, taller than Dwight Howard. Would be listed 6'11" today.
of course I realize, 6'9" to 7'0", is a lot closer than most think, most players over 6'10" was listed as 7'0", I watched Lebron standing eye to eye with Bill and they looked the same size, but again, of course, Bill has aged and kinda stooped over.
Got to talk to Wilt as a kidd cause he and Willie Nalls owned a Ralph's market in South Central Los Angeles (Avalon&103rd St.)
He actually did invest back into black communities when he played...
Also be noted that Wilt has a excellent track and field guy in college at Kanas and he could out lift Mr. Universe ...
Greatest of all time
I've seen them all.
Great story. I love it
Wilt is the one true GOAT!
I would love to see the 3 point line taken away from the game !!!! Maybe we would see some quality basketball then!!!!!
Lorenzo Pablo Samaniego u do know takibg away the line doesnt stop people from shooting from that distance right
Eddie Thomas Look they will be outside shooting but not as far players would need to adjust
The 3 point line actually created more space for Bigs to work in the paint. The problem is 99% of todays bigs don't want to do the dirty work in the the Post. They'd rather be jump shooters.
Mad Jester your right the post game would be alot easier in todays game, but like you say they rather shoot outside
The game has shifted away from post moves. Layups are probably more common now.
More space to do layups.
One of the greatest stories I've ever heard. He was legendary almost fictional cause of the things he did most people can't imagine all the records he still holds today and how he changed the game not how the game changed for him like MJ.
"He was legendary almost fictional cause of the things he did..." Wilt Chamberlain stories are like Chuck Norris stories ... except they are all true.
Being a Celtic fan from childhood, I always rooted against Wilt, until he took out lazy Lou Alcindor. Then I loved him.
Wilt took out that Alcindor bum after two seasons. He was never heard from again.
Blocks weren´t officially counted when Wilt was playing, but in his 112 games where blocked shot data was recorded, Wilt averaged 8.8 BPG (the most official recorded BPG in a season is 5.6 BPG by Mark Eaton).
WILT CHAMBERLAIN ENJOYED CONTRIBUTING TO THE TRACK PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Wilt retired 1973 he could play in 80s he was so good
Pls remember that during those days offensive fouls were easily- called.the moment you put down your shoulders against the oppenent then its offensive foul.thats why wilt has to do fade- away jumper.
The real GOAT, Wilt
Except in the playoffs and finals. Lol
Nestor Nieves Except when he has a good team you mean
Michael Jordan once said, "It is an honor to be second to that man." Obviously, he meant most of his scoring stats are second to we know who.
he would be 3rd, behind Bird.
Worthy met Magic on his recruiting trip to MSU and could have been playing in LA in the summer as well.
,no Wilt would block about 20 shots against the bulls .Jordan would not be allowed in the paint.
Wilt would block 20 shots against anybody. Bill Russell was one of the top defensive players of all time and Wilt scored 55 on him.
Amazing story.
Most popular does not necessarily mean greatest.
jaranarm yes mean because most popular of all time and curent is not the same, alot of players after finish career be in shadow but jordan still shine.
WILT WAS WILT BECAUSE OF HEIGHT...
JORDAN IS JORDAN BECAUSE OF SKILLS,FOOTWORK, HANGTIME, DUNKING, OFFENSE AND DEFENSE..
BIG DIFFERENCE..
evidently fella, u know nothing about the game, how many centers ever lead the nba in assists, WILT
In those days of Wilt they never recorded blocks...i am sure he would have been an all time great
Literally every major record you have to add "besides wilt" or "since wilt" otherwise it will just be dominated by wilt.
Wow. Showtime lakers pick up team WITH Bernard King my all time fav Knick. Awesome
Wilt chamberlain had amazing skills he actually blocked Kareem Abdul jabbar shots that's incredible and both are Legends
WILT is the GOAT, no one is even close
I’m actually impressed the 19 who voted it down. That they had the prerequisite IQ to operate/navigate their way into a comment. Them being single digit IQ and all
If you weren't athlete just shut up. Wilt was a something you would never imagine.. Perfect specimen for great center. Which he is.
G O A T
One of the best coach ever
thats insane
That game was in 1986 that made Wilt Chamberlain 49-50 years old. AC green playing gives away the year.
Larry Brown only coached at UCLA for two season, 1979-81. He would not have been in the UCLA men's gym in 1986. He misremembered, and probably meant David Greenwood, who had been an all-American at UCLA and was then playing in the NBA.
The greatest of all-time. Forget the overrated James and Russell.
I remember that story, wilt said no more layups and blocked every layup magic attempted lol
NOT layups, it was "shots made", Wilt blocked EVERYTHING.
People build the NBA Mount Rushmore and never include Wilt simply because they didn’t see him.
Thanks!
One of the guys said AC Green.ACGreen was on the Lakers.with.Magic a d Byron Scott who. also was mentioned
He was Bo Jackson.. before THERE WAS A Bo Jackson
Wilt Chamberlain..⚡⚡🇨🇦
Wilt even as older man could come out for 1 game and go beast mode unfortunately he could no longer endure 82 game season.
I'd love to hear this story from the POV of those four UCLA freshmen. Incredible story
I laugh when I hear a young person tell me that Michael Jordan is the GOAT.
I always say: I guess you haven't heard about Wilt Chamberlain.
Ask Coach Larry Brown about Connie Hawkins

The realisation of what this story means is just stunning. Terrifying, even. I have always been adamant that Michael Jordan was the Goat. I'm starting to wonder...
The story is bullshit, Larry Brown is a liar. Having said that, Wilt is the greatest, it's not even close.
@@marioarguello6989 It was just a pick up game. Highly doubt Magic's team was putting much effort to score.
@@seinfan9 Sure, if you say so.
