- In today's video we head to Swanage on the Dorset Coast, in search of Fish & Chips.
We've tried a couple of chippies on the seafront, but one we haven't visited yet on the channel is The Parade Fish & Chips. How will it fare compared to it's local rivals?

Hi folks, another weekend is upon us 🙂 Also the start of the UK school summer holidays - lets hope for more sunshine!
Let me know what you thought of this chippy.. good, bad or indifferent?
Start of the English school holidays, Scottish schools have already been off a few weeks!
@@StewartyMac have they? I didn’t know that, has it always been that way, or is it since devolution?
@@GreenoEats Always been that way for as long as I can remember. No idea why.

It was foolish of me Gary ! Not gonna make that mistake again ha ha :-) Thanks for the kind words pal.

Haha yes garry
I love your vids.
I'm a London BusDriver and so many mums and dad looked stressed today because of Schools breaking up.
As a Dad of 4 boys and a grandad of 7, don't stress if you can't afford a holiday away.
A simple picnic in the local park makes everlasting memories.
Watch a film together.
Thanks for the kind words. I bet being a London bus driver has it's moments doesn't it?? You're right, there are plenty of things you can do that don't have to cost the earth, and make just as good memories. I appreciate you taking the time to remind us of that :-)
Its all about spending time together..😊

Captain Birdseye and his scampi has now got Gary & Greeno in his net.
Yep - and he's sat on his trawler laughing like a Bond villain!
Closing my eyes and listening to the gulls, I was almost right there beside you - only I couldn't smell fish and chips and that hint of malt vinegar - just my toast with a poached egg on top that the dog wanted to share - and she is just as fast and 'dangerous' as a dive-bombing gull!! Loved the vlog and seeing Mrs Greeno and Little'un! Thanks again xx
Glad you enjoyed the video - there were certainly plenty of gulls about!!
Hello Greeno hope you and your family are well
Little un is straight to the point no messing around with her 😂🤗

Yep, if she did RUclips reviews they would all have to be Shorts 😂
Severe lack of sauces! Ketchup or mayo needed.
That scampi is a robbery.
Loved the look of the chips and chicken bites. 😁👌🏻
I normally pick up all the extra sauces from fast food places and keep them in a bag I bring with me. I call it my "car sauce'
I don’t think the seagulls would mind the scampi saw the shadows of them flying around, looks a lovely place. Great review
They were definitely on the hunt for food from the chip shop customers!

Another lovely family day out. Too bad about the scampi, the chips did look nice and the chicken nuggets, I would have been happy with those. The winner is the view of course, so lovely, you had me laughing a few times. You and Gary are the go to channels for food reviews, nice and relaxed and charming. Thank you again for a great review.
Another comment of yours to put a smile on my face - thanks so much :-) This chippy was a bit of a mixed bag wasn't it - perhaps I'll try their fish as someone else told me the haddock there is good - but otherwise not in a huge rush to go back!
The ubiquitous industrial orange sausage
Yep, don't think what goes into it, just enjoy the flavour 🙂
For people wanting to do Day trips on the train. Dont forget about Group travel & travel after 930/10am for off peak fares during the week.
If you are in London, then Brighton is usually the cheapest to get too (For coastal day trip)on Thameslink. Dont use Southern as its 2x as expensive as Thameslink & takes the same time(within a few mins). Bournemouth in 2 hr radius is always most expensive it seems.
Kings Cross/Blackfriars/London/East Croydon is some of the main stations you can pick it up from.
Good tips there. Won't get you to Swanage mind, as that's not on the rail network 🙂
I'd forgotten about pea fritters..one of my favourites in the midlands in the 70s!
I'm on a mission to bring them back to public attention :-)
Great footage Greeno with family. Love the comments below. I usually order a Saveloy with my Fish and Chips.
I love a saveloy myself, although for some reason I find they get cold really quickly!
Thank you very much! Off to Swanage next week, so this is all really good to know!
Hope you have a nice trip to Dorset!!
Little'en is adorable. Food looked....how do I put this politely.....CRAP.
She has her moments !
I never get fed with chippy review! Some better than others, after I had a flake nicked off my ice cream in Llandudno, I now use a brolly to eat under if eating out by the sea with the hungry gulls 🎉 ty for staring 🎉

Pea fritter must be a southern thing.
I think it is, cos although I think of mushy peas as a Northern thing you don't find pea fritters there, strange!
I’m in Scotland and I’ve never heard of a pea fritter. I’d like to try one. I’d never order scampi, I’d always choose fish.
Ask your local chippy if they'll do you a pea fritters, they just may do!!
That pea fritter looked proper nice Greeno. There's a pie shop near where I grew up that has always served Pea Pie. They're yummy.
Pea pies sounds absolutely great ❤

Gary's a real gent, I am sure you'll enjoy his videos 🙂
@@GreenoEats i think I will do 👍
Don't think I've seen pea fritters my way, I don't mind mushy peas if I can have a small amount with fish or a chip but not sure I'd want a mouthful of one. Well done for protecting the food from the seagulls! Had visions of a scene from Hitchcock's The Birds
Needed eyes in the back of our head with ll those gulls ! Isn't it funny how much regional variation there is in something as simple as the great British chippy :-)
I'd throw lashings of vinegar on that fritter, another quality video with the fam Greeno. Hope you're well mate.
Vinegar and mushy peas is a good combo, that's for sure!

Another cracking video review, no pea fritters here in Birmingham
I am amazed by the amount of areas that seem not to have pea fritters. Mushy peas are everywhere, I thought pea fritters would be much more prevalent than they are! Thanks for the kind words 🙂
Never heard of pea fritters until now (from near Liverpool)
@@Sc25515 I spy a business opportunity - delivering pea fritters to everywhere north of Birmingham 🙂
The best one is next door, never had a bad meal there
Yes, I have reviewed the Fish Plaice on the channel before - although I think the one further down the seafront called Wright on the Beach beats both of them :-)
You live and learn. Who knew you could get mushy pea fritters. Not that I will try them, I'll take your word for them, Greeno. As for scampi, virtually unknown over here in Canada, it seems like a dish made for a rip-off. Covering it in batter also covers up as to what it was before they dipped it. Today, they take any old shrimp, cover it, and call it scampi. And yes, Gary was right, ripe for rip off. Thanks for sharing. I hope the seagulls didn't attack, lol.
We did manage to dodge the seagulls 😂 Had to have eyes in the back of our heads though! Proper scampi is a real delight, but so hard to find these days.
Scampi £7.20 you can get a scampi and chips for that much so just getting 10 scampi
you can get scampi a full bag for under £3. with proper taste.
maybe they were cooked from frozen and all the water was the defrost while cooking.
you may as well got a fish for that much. would be more filling
I agree, with the benefit of hindsight I should have ordered fish rather than scampi. And I am certain this was frozen scampi, hence the lack of flavour.
Chips look alright. Kind of well done and limp, thats how I grew up eating them( a chippy chip shoudnt be crisps like an oven chip IMO). The Scampi on the other hand looked appaling, especially considering the price.
Yeah, I guess wrapped in paper all chips kind of steam a bit don't they. That scampi was an abomination !
I love mushy peas fritters. They are so filling. We have them at our local chippy here in Holsworthy, Devon. Yum yum.
Nice video! 😊
Mushy pea fritters are great aren't they! (Little'un disagrees though 🤣)
I'm definitely going to recommend the pea fritters to my local chippie in Nantwich, love mushie peas and fritters, what's not to like.

Hiya Greeno. You should start giving a score out of 10. Frozen tasteless scampi at that price was a ripoff I recon. Gary was in Rick Stines place earlier and gave it a 9/ 10. I love your video’s and can’t understand why you have so few subscribers. Love lil un’s input too. Or lack there of 🤣😂🤣. Keep them coming buddy. 👍
Thanks so much for the kind words - the channel is growing slowly but surely, so we'll get there on the journey eventually :-) I do occasionally score something, but normally it just a narrative about a place or whatever I am reviewing. Would be hard to score this place for example as the pea fritter was great, but the scampi awful :-) It's the summer holidays now, so every chance we'll be seeing more of Little'un and her "concise" reviews ha ha !
Never heard of a pea fritter but it looks good. Scampi is so over rated and expensive now. You shouldn't need to put tartar sauce on them to get any flavour. Enjoyed the chanel and looking forward to your next adventure 😃
So you'll try a pea fritter if you find one in a chippy now? I hope so :-) I am glad you're enjoying the content, that's what it is all about !!
@@GreenoEats yes will definitely try one 👍🏻
I asked Gary a question and I would like to ask you as well. Do British people eat fish and chips with halibut fish? In Canada halibut is the most popular fish to use in fish and chips, yet I never see you guys eating it.
I have only seen halibut in fish and chip restaurants, not takeaways. And even then very rarely, it’s quite an expensive fish here in the UK. Cod and haddock are by far the most common fish we would eat. Plaice is often another option, and in recent years we see hake creeping onto more fish and chip menus.
Thanks for responding
@@piper2381 you are most welcome 🙂
I wanna try a pea fritter
You definitely should, they’re immense 🙂
Scampi , more tale than tail .
Absolutely right - a tall tale at that !!
Great vlog. To be honest I don’t think I’ve ever had scampi from a chippy that isn’t just your bulk standard straight from the freezer type, which I don’t actually mind from time to time, but I dip them in curry sauce or mayo. Haven’t been to Swanage for a few years but it’s a lovely place
I've grown to like Swanage over the years, when I was a kid we'd call it Sewage 🤣
@@GreenoEats oh no ! 😂 The first time I ever went there was when I was 11 and it was a school trip where we stayed at a hotel for a week, I’d never been away from my mum and dad like that before. The two things I remember was that they made us a packed lunch and it was the same every day with marmite sandwiches plus we watched Top of the Pops where the Beatles played on a rooftop, which I think was there last performance, in 1969 !! We did go on a few trips but it’s all a bit hazy now 😂
I got attacked twice by seagulls last Sunday in Truro, Cornwall, when I was eating a sandwich. Blood everywhere.
But was it your blood or the seagulls ?? 😂 If I got my hands on one of the cheeky rascals....

Ha ha, very good 🙂
I've never seen pies in the Dorset chippies? Although you have some unusual items I've never seen like that mushy pea fritter. I've not tried a deep fried Mars bar I can get local yet...
Our local chippy charges £4.50 for 6 scampi.
Most chippies I know of close to me have a couple of pie options, but not the widest range. Never seen deep fried chocolate in these parts though, have to drive 8 hours north for that 😂
Hello Greeno, oh I do like to be beside the seaside. But as my son keeps telling me ". Prices have gone up, up, & up" Thought the chips were spot on for my taste, a proper chippy portion. Luckily I've never come across a pea fritter 😂 maybe my loss😢😉Chicken chunks looked fabulous 🐔🍗Jumbo sausage again seemed to hit the spot. Now Scampi 😮Ah, Friday night's supper, scampi and chips. It's a fact that after the pub shuts, and you step outside said chippy, Gravity makes food so heavy, yer packet drops to ankle level & you try to grab it. And most times it's not worth it. So, cheap eats? No longer. Take more notice of Gary the man knows 'is scampi. See you next time Allan&Family
Yep, ordering the scampi was a rookie error ha ha ! And I can't believe you've never ecountered the delight that is a pea fritter - honestly, you don't know what you're missing !!
Grenno how nice of you to pay for that Tramps Dinner LOL
Ha ha - gotta do your bit :-)
Thanks for the review Family Greeno. I’m starting to think higher of my local chippy in Kent as they do their own scampi in batter which seems rarer than usual. The sausage and pea fritter would be my selection there. Price point was not bad value for by the sea/harbour
You have scampi in batter in Kent. You'd better let Gary Eats know (or just tell me and I can pass it on next time I chat with him 🙂) He'll be delighted!!
I will show you a picture of the scampi the next time I buy it
New to the channel a very clear camera.
Welcome to the channel, I hope you'll enjoy the videos. The camera is good - some people would probably prefer it was softer focus with my face on it though ha ha!
£7.20 for 10 prawns in breadcrumbs. 😮
Steep isn't it!
Mushy pea fritter I make my own and add Mint sauce to the peas the mutts nuts Greeno
Sounds brilliant!
So hot today. Last thing I want is fish and chips. So what would it be. A nice Ham salad with some buttered new potatoes. Well it looks reasonable. A chip shop owner said good chips are not crispy on the outside. I must say it's rare to have crispy chips from a fish chip shop I find. I never trust scampi or chicken bites in a fish and chip shop.. I would buy half a chicken or fish. Scampi is probably 10% meat as seen on a documentary.. It's a mush texture. The chip shops seem unaware . Thanks again
It wasn’t quite so warm when this was filmed thankfully. Ham salad with new pots sounds good!
Thanks!
That's very kind of you!

We know the SAUCE was nice.... 🙂
Not in a hurry to buy scampi from a chippy again !
Brave eating on them benches with them bloody seagulls they are a nightmare lost a sausage or 2 to them 😂😂😂😂
Such dismal portions, but then, that seems to be the norm these days. I wouldn't go there personally.
It was just ok really. As I said, of the 3 chippies we have tried in Swanage it’s the least favourite, so we won’t be rushing back!
£7.20 for 10 Scampi. Finding a decent fish & chip shop that doesn't rip you off is like walking through a Mind field
You're not wrong there!!
All chip shops use frozen scampi and chicken what do expect.
Not all, some make fresh. And even if they do use frozen, when advertising it as wholetail it should at least be meaty and have some flavour beyond the crumb coating.
never had a mushy pea fritter, but never been crazy about mushy peas in general, as much as I love fish and chips. Rather have some baked beans (so long as they are piping hot - cold/lukewarm beans are horrible).
I don't think I have ever ordered beans in a chip shop, just one of those things that in my mind I can't justify paying £2 for a third of a tin 🤣
@@GreenoEats I don't really bother either, as if they are cold it ruins everything. I just get fish and chips with a coke, or sausage and chips with a coke. Slap on the salt, pepper and vinegar and that'll do me. (Also, the price of beans - like most things - ain't what it used to be...haha)
Great video again
Thank you!
Will you do any "out-takes/bloopers in a future vlog? Always make me laugh. Thanks Greeno xx
Outtakes? What outtakes? I'm a pro 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe I should save some of them and put together a compilation (although I would need to bleep a lot of things... I don't swear in the videos, but the occasional expletive might be heard when things go wrong ha ha!)
What you dont know is that early morning, staff run across the road to the sea , and await Poseidon to deliver frozen scampi, not whole tail, the slop just for tourist and overpriced. The wife and I refused to buy F&C from either one of the shops, fish small . Question is the fish local or just cheap cuts from Norwegian factory ships.
At least with The Fish Plaice they do note the provenance of the fish they're selling that day on a chalkboad - didn't notice anything similar at Parade.
How can ine review a Fish 'n Chippy without trying the fish ? Having said that, no amount of salt can be described as 'healthy'. Love our Queen's reviews. Short and straight to the point :D But does any chippy serve propper scampi ?
Sometimes it’s worth trying the other items from the chippy, gives you a feel of their overall range and quality. If Little’un had a review channel all her videos would be Shorts 😂

Yes, I must get over to Chez Fred soon!
I live in Poole. Go to Swanage often. This place has always been dreadful. It's a seaside fish and chip shop. It doesn't have to be good. People will buy regardless.
I have been avoiding it as I noticed when I filmed at the Fish Plaice previously that is only has a hygiene rating of 3, which is a bit of a concern ! Which is your favourite in Swanage (and also, is there anywhere better in Poole thank Lakeside?)
@@GreenoEats Lakeside is mediocre and horribly overpriced. As it's Poole a certain type of people go there because it's "posh", despite being in the Asda carpark! Mia's at 62 Ashley Rd is excellent with very large portions at a very reasonable price. There's no such thing as scampi it's langoustine meat pal still nice if done correctly.
It started out as a way of using up monkfish, when that was a cheap 🐟
When I looked up scampi’s,google said it was langoustine, also known as Dublin Bay prawns, your comment made it sound as if it was something different than langoustine?
@@JanetBrown-px2jn nowadays scampi would indeed be a langoustine tail (well good scampi would be) - but originally it used to be little fish nuggests basically, made with monkfish at a time when that was an unpopular and cheap fish.

As I understand it they make the peas thicker than normal and refrigerate them so they can be moulded into balls or patty shapes. Then treat them like any other chip shop item, rip in the batter and fry 🙂 Welcome to the channel, I hope you will enjoy my videos!!
Urgh, places that serve cheap frozen scampi or chicken nuggets don't deserve to stay in business. At least use quality product. I do like the scraggly chips though, but I'm very much a salt and no vinegar man on the chips and a lots of vinegar on my fish only. The sausage looked good and litl'un very smartly kept it to herself. And of course Swanage is another beautiful part of Dorset.
See I am salt only on the fish, and salt with frankly excessive vinegar on the chips 🙂 It would be boring if we were all the same though! I grew up in Wareham, which has kind of a little local rivalry with Swanage… when I was a nipper we’d call it “Sewage” to wind up the Swanage natives 🤣

@@francisnewmarch6837 Now I do love a crab sandwich, and we have some of the finest crabs around this part of the world, Portland crab is rightly lauded - I'll have to feature that on the channel soon :-) Congrats on the Atlantic crossing - that is quite some achievement! I get seasick on boating lakes, so I don't think I will be following in your footsteps ha ha!!
You should've listened to you parents and become a doctor.
Ha ha, how do you know I’m not a doctor?
Don't listen to Gary eats😅
He's a wise man - I have to listen to the oracle !
@@GreenoEats He is not a guru he holds grudges and cannot accept criticism. That is not the sign of a good person.😁
@@Katmando376 Oh really? I always found him to be very fair, and with typical British self-deprication. You have examples otherwise?
@@GreenoEats He said that the Persian restaurant was the best review.Ever then he backed tracks by saying that a Greek restaurant is better than that. An argues over it.We had an argument.OK, and that it but now he holds a grudge against me.and doesn't respond very childish.
@@Katmando376you need help 😅
so rick stein as been a 2 to three star chef from the 70s im sure done so serious hours as a commy to build up his knowlage and this guy and his mates tell us whats good and bad and along the way try and end peoples businesses by telling us whats good and bad im mean my prob here is your just a a bloke with mrs green and the little un what is your back ground to be slaging off family businesses with your comments so you can make money from you tube i mean seriously who are you to be judging
How am I trying to end people’s businesses? It’s just a food review, a personal opinion. You’d be amazed how many people choose to share their opinions on Tripadvisor or Google reviews. Would you rather not know if a place is good or bad before you eat there?
@@GreenoEats why dont you open a bar a restaurant,a cafe see how tough it is the long hours you come along and oh this is frozen thats frozen you have a go and see and lets judge you its nothing but making money from you tube ive not a problem with a review my problem is whats your experience to judge someone's livelyhood i mean how do you think its not affecting in this current climate someone s bussiness i mean you and your mate going round reviewing gordon ramsay i mean really a three Michelin star chef and your telling him hes got it wrong do you really know for absolute sure that some of the food is cooked off site and is frozen are you absolute certain of this , and then clarkson telling people not to go because it didnt get the greeno green light i hope youve patented that you never know if it gets globle , telling people jeremy clarkson won't be there did you expect him to be preparing the the sausage meat or serving you a pint or maybe waiting to apologise because you had driven two and half hours for a kebab and by the way i dont think you'll get barred i doubt clarkson knows you greeno with your green light , like your review on the sainsburys £5 .50 breakfast though sorry i cant help my sarcasm , anyway you might end up with a food review spot in a well known rag im thinking VIZ
@@leemurphy7570 As it happens I used to own a country pub so am well aware of the hours and effort that go into making it a success. The great thing about RUclips is that there are a multitude of creators out there making content about a multitude of different subjects - if you don't like what I have to say that's perfectly fine - it's only ever my opinion.
Ah you really need to listen to @Garyeats Greeno, the best (sorry 🤗) reviewer for me. Thank you for your video ✨
Can't disagree with your analysis ha ha ! Thanks so much for watching!
