This is an issue that's close to a lot of our hearts. Every designer I've ever met has had to deal with imposter syndrome in some way. If it's getting you down, remember that we're all figuring our way on this weird planet and there's no wrong path to where you are. We're all here to support each other so we can continue making awesome things for each other and the world.

I doubt I am the first or will be the last to say this, but thank you so much. This video just made the world of a difference for me. Hearing that I am not alone when it comes to feeling inadequate, although awful in the sense that so many suffer from it, is very liberating in that if others can get through it, so can I. So thank you again and keep up the great work!!

5:56 The dude that looks like he is holding his hand out for the lady is not actually helping her that is the hand of the guy holding him (who is right out of frame) and he is helping that lady.
This leads to the conclusion that either that guy is amazing at this and can hold two people without having had any assistance or that he has three hands.
While the guy in frame has either one hand or is helping the next person out of frame.

Neil Armstrong also experienced imposter syndrome after he became the first man to walk on the moon.
He felt like he didn't deserve to be seen as someone who accomplished something great, and that he 'just went where he was sent' and that was all. It's sort of mind-boggling how easily we can deceive ourselves.

Matt, I will admit, I was a bit wary when you first came on. I had grown so used to the usual "sound" of EC videos, and such that I was a bit nervous that quality would drop when Dan stopped voicing these. Or when James left. But the show has been consistently high quality, and I very quickly came to enjoy the sound of your voice.
You're not Dan. You will never be Dan. And that is so far from a bad thing. You are very, very distinctly your own person, and the voiceover you provide for this series is amazing. Thank you for contributing so much to these lessons and stories (especially a fan of Extra Mythology and Sci-Fi here!) with your voice and amazing delivery. Keep up the great work, you're making all of us proud.

Just a word of encouragement, a very good friend of mine got every job she had over 40 years applying to jobs she was not qualified for. She never lied about her abilities, but always said, "give me 30 days. I'm willing & able to learn, & if it doesn't work out after 30 days, I'll go, no questions asked, no hard feelings." She was never let go. Sometimes, humility & a willingness to learn is more desired than the actual skills. And sometimes they just put in requirements in order to weed out those who are too scared to try.
If you see a job you want, go for it. Be honest, but don't be self-deprecating.

    • @pogo575
      @pogo575 4 года назад +10

Apply to them anyway! From the other end of the stick I can tell you many places care more about your ability to adapt and fit in to the pipeline.. much like new software employees can be taught plenty as long as they know the basics. But, finding someone that has humility, enough skill to get the job done and will mesh well with others is priceless.

    This was fantastic!
Programmer here. I started professional work at age 20 and was instantly a mid level engineer. There were basic programming concepts that weren't taught in school. I'd never worked on a team as large as what I was brought into. First day in I wrote code that ended up needing to be fixed a couple days later. Time passed and I eventually turned things around and became a great asset to the team. Taking over quite a few large features in our game and adding new ones.
My imposter syndrome stemmed from being so much younger than my counterparts. There were a few engineers who were less than 10 years older than me but most had been doing this for almost as long as I had been alive. Recently found out that they have the same thing because they are viewing themselves as old since I'm able to keep up even if I might not be as experienced.

I’m an airline captain. I definitely had a touch of this. I had some poor quality instructors early on who failed to achieve their goals, and they took it out on me by telling me that I wasn’t good enough.
Took a few months as the captain to break free of that. What helped a lot, actually, was working with all of our brand new FO’s who were nervous and making mistakes. It really put it into perspective how far I had come since I was at that point, and it felt great helping them through it.

I felt it before my first sports game in the national league, like I wasn't good enough to compete. My coach noticed it and asked: "How are you feeling?" Nervous I answered. He replied: "Why? You are in the starting line up, benching the person who was in the team 3 years before you." After that, everything I had the same feeling I remember this moment and it helped me get passed it.

I remember a classic case of this: had been working closely with a group of about a dozen others for a couple of weeks and it was going amazingly when one of the group almost had a breakdown in front of us all from feeling so inadequate compared to us all. We then realised that everyone (except one) - including those in charge - were feeling the same. It helped to know we all felt like that.

I very honestly wish this had come out a couple years ago when I was heavily affected by this. I was in academia (biology) and had every single symptom stated and dealt with it with procrastination and settling for a lower tiered job. However, I think something to note is that it is OK to feel unhappy and to want to change. For me, I just wasn't into the idea of being a scientist. Instead, I like teaching and am quite good at it (according to my biased students). It took a while for me to reconcile my desires and the desires of others who wanted me to do other things whether I truly liked it or not. Maybe my experience is similar to yours, or maybe not- I think the key is recognizing the root cause of the issue and then addressing it. For me it was being pushed into things I never had a choice in and feeling like I should not be there. I addressed it by leaving that and following my heart (with a dose of realism) and am now pretty happy with my life (though still struggling to advance).

Love this video. I am a manager myself and yes, I purposefully set up mentorship’s for this reason. It actually works in reverse too. My senior people get to remember how far they’ve come.
It’s also important to be very mindful of giving the occasional call out. If I see something done super well, I will purposefully call them directly and make SURE they hear me ramble on about their success. They hear enough of their short comings already so it’s critical to remember to do this, even when sometimes it feels like something they should have been doing ages ago.

The biggest thing that helped me get over imposter syndrome is reminding myself that no one’s situation is exactly the same. We’re not all the same people with the same lives. So it isn’t logical to compare yourself to someone else when the situation isn’t controlled. You never know when you or someone else might be disadvantaged or advantaged

This is one of the few channels I highly recommend to friends and this video is a great example why. At it's core, it's a channel about game development, but most of the time, it also ends up being a great discussion on how to live a healthy life. Keep up the great work!!

I'm only just realizing as I watch this that I've been fighting imposter syndrome for years at my job. And only in the past few months have I been able to turn it around and just a few days ago I got my promotion that honestly I deserved years back, but I had to apply myself to get that, and will myself to actually DO it. Nice to know that most people deal with similar issues in their life aswell

Talk about timing; I started my new job a mere three/four weeks ago, and despite having six years of experience in the field, I still get overly nervous because I am too slow, and when I try to hurry up things go awry, which results in me having to correct them thus losing time, slowing down everybody else and ticking off my boss. It doesn't help him telling me I should be more precise and swift, I feel guilty and get even more nervous. So yeah, watching this does help a bit, and maybe I can get to work tomorrow with a little more confidence.
Oh, and Matt: I think your narrations are amazing, just the way they are.

    I have a classmate who's total opposite.
When I decided to do a small project (simpler than what others were doing), he was like...
"I know what you're doing. You really are a trickster. Don't think you can fool me like everyone else..." blah blah. [In my native language, of course]
You don't need imposter syndrome if you have a friend like him.

I hadn’t been on RUclips for a long time and went to watch an Extra Credits episode and was very jarred to find a completely different person with a different sound doing the video and shut it off. However when I actually went back and started catching up and saw the episode where Dan announced that he was handing things off that made all the difference and I was willing to give you a chance. I have definitely come to enjoy your style of doing the videos and you really won me over with Zoey and I actually prefer your style to Dan’s now.

I've spent the last two years constantly feeling this way. I got into a grad program that accepts very few people every year, and instead of feeling accomplished, I felt like I "stole" the position from someone who deserved it more. Even now that I have a job in the field I went to school for I constantly feel like I'm going to be discovered as a fraud. It helps me so much to watch something like this and know I'm probably not the only one in my workplace who feels this way.

Wow, I don't usually comment on videos but it feels really nice to have a term to describe my anxiety in school right now. I'm in advanced classes in my school, meaning sorted along with other high achieving students. But I've been always a slow learner, and seeing everyone pick up subjects so easily has given me anxiety. I'm scared on being exposed and not being like my other classmates, my friends, and my environment. It's truly a horrible experience when someone walks up to me and asks me a question or help on an assignment and I stand there - scared that if I say "I don't know" then I am worth nothing.

Thanks for this, been doubting myself about my abilities as a DM for my gaming group. Been wondering if they were even enjoying what I was presenting each week. Took a few weeks off to focus on work and when I sent out the text for the next session the enthusiasm I received was really heart warming and validating. This video helped me realize how I was thinking negatively and will help me reframe those thoughts into positive ones.

This year marks my 5th year in the games industry and I have never felt imposter syndrome stronger than this year. After a project in work got cancelled I kept telling myself it was my fault because I wasn't good enough because I am just pretending to be a good designer, that I don't match up to anyone else on the team or in the company. That isn't the case and I know that I knew that when they cancelled the project but I keep thinking about it. It sucks and I am still dealing with that mindset of not being good enough but man, these last few months it has been easier, I have started accepting that maybe I am good enough, maybe all that time I have invested in the games industry and games as a whole really has made me a good designer. I still have some work to do with accepting it but I am on the right path. Also, solid music choice at the end. Really backs up the feeling of hope in this episode :)
