When I bring it up again she gets aggressive. She pulled me into her room recently and locked me in there until I admitted to something I didnt even do. This lock just helped me feel a lot more safe. I've been searching for something easy and diy like back in the day we would just shove a butter knife between the door frame and the wall (the handle sticks out onto the door and provides instant privacy). But as a traveler, I can't just go around separating the frame from the wall and it's not easy to slide a knife in on just any frame. I bought something that I didn't realize covers the strike plate making this "extra" privacy lock the ONLY lock on the door, which also doesn't make sense. Your idea is so simple and anyone can do it! thank you

it works for me but something you may have to do if your shoe lace is long, is wrap it around the door handle multiple times as tight as you can. This helps the door not open at all or only create a small crack.
My mom still barges into my room even when I asked her not to. I'm almost 30 and she still does this, it's insane. She took my key over a decade ago and lost it, so I can't use that and I don't really want to change the handle... You're saving me man, thanks.
this is great! also a little tip, the whole concept is that the strong is stuck to the frame and knob, so if your door frame key thingy doesn't come off the frame, you can skrew the yarn under the screw which will trap it, so basically the same thing! i reccomend using stronger string however as with enough force the yarn will rip.
