    I came up with a way to lock a door by modifying a dinner fork. Some folks may have seen my earlier video on my channel called "portable door lock", which I made from flat 1/8" steel . The Fork Lock, however, is way easier to make. This lock is very useful when wanting to add a little extra security to a motel room, public restrooms (which often have broken locks), or on any interior, or exterior door.

    Ex work colleague gave me one of the best tips for door security. He worked for NGO's previously in some very dodgy countries & stopped in some dodgy hotels. He said always carry a small wedge in your luggage to jam under the door when you go to bed. Particularly useful tip for lone female travellers.

      A wedge is simple to shove back into the room. I have skinny fingers and I was able to move a wedge under a door to get in lol so anything thin and rigid could move the wedge.

    • @paintedpony2935
      @paintedpony2935 2 года назад +2

      And on the rare occasions I forgot the wedge, I used a high-heeled 👠 shoe. The wedge is usually better and less expensive, but some hotels remodeled by removing carpet and installing vinyl flooring. Then the wedge is useless because it's too short.

      To me, the word entitled is both overused and often misused today. It means that someone is due a title, right, or claim to something. I would say you were just unaware, not entitled. We're all gaining insights from each other all the time, it's part of being a reasonable and appreciative human being. Your transparency reveals your maturity and humility. I bet I'm not the only one who likes that about you.

    • @amgee007
      @amgee007 2 года назад +6

      I know that you are expressing a nice sentiment and I'm glad that you haven't needed extra levels of protection, but people are throwing around the word "entitled" a lot and using it in a way that implies they've received undeserved or special treatment. Entitled means to appropriate as by title; attribute or attach as by right. I would argue that every human being is entitled to being safe and not victims of abuse or crime. Not being victim is being fortunate and not having some entitlement greater than others. Chances are that you are blessed to have had good parents, and likely that your parents and grandparents worked hard to provide you a safe environment. It doesn't make you "entitled". This type of language that people are employing sows envy and strife. I don't mean this as a criticism to you, specifically, but to this growing trend in using the word entitlement. I'm sure that you are a good person.

They're guilty about it the next day and does apologize but for the meantime. I get hurt ALOT. I'm okay tho at least I think so maybe but I hope this helps. For anyone who is sad and their parents beating them up. tbh I don't know ppl say it gets better idk if it will for me anytime. When I was locked out of my appartment, the locksmith asked if I cared if the door handle lock would need to be replaced in order to get me in. I said no as I planned on replacing it the next day. He took out a hammer and chisel and cut thru the band that encircles the shaft that turns when you twist the door knob. The metal is Aluminum and almost paper thin. He then grabbed a vise grip and turned the whole mechanism. If you don't at least have a dead bolt you have zero security from a knob lock.

    • @PhilCrockett
      @PhilCrockett  2 года назад +3

      AGREE! Great post! however, The lock in this video is meant to be a portable privacy lock. I use it during my travels on bathroom doors, bedrooms, and offices. This lock is NOT meant to replace a deadbolt (which can still be compromised). My Grandfather use to say “locks keep the honest people out”. Probably the best advice ever.
      I will further say...., if you have windows on your house, then you (we) are fools for buying expensive deadbolts. (I have both... BTW). :)

    Excellent idea for a makeshift lock.
    If I may make a suggestion, if the door is jiggled the fork handle may wiggle out. If you also bend about a half inch of the narrow end of the handle to a 90 degree angle and put it through the prongs, as before, but with the bent part of the handle pointing up it can not wiggle out because the weight of the wide end acts as a counterweight to hold the bent end up.
    Check it out, have fun, and again thanks.

      +King Without A Crown I've never been to Europe unfortunately. However, as long as there's a latch hole, this lock would work. Of course if there's a deadbolt already on the door, you wouldn't need the portable Fork Lock. Someday, I hope to visit Europe! Thanks for the feedback!

    • @PhilCrockett
      @PhilCrockett  8 лет назад +26

      If you have a vice, it will allow a perfect right angle bend, and a saw will make a perfect edge on the cut....I'm a country boy, and these are common tools in my culture. However, there's always other ways to accomplish a task. Apparently, there are a lot of people that don't access to these tools. Thanks for your post. And yes.... bending metal back and forth can really heat things up......like your finger!

    • @shaynewilliams4482

      see i have a vice, and i have a hacksaw too, but it was like 4 in the morning, and i didn't want to wake up the people in the room next to me lol. But one thing i did do when bending the fork back and forth so it didn't come out all willy nilly was i pressed it against the table, and bent it over the edge so that kind of helped out. In the end i'm all for proper tools, precision, and doing things the right way, but the difference was only marginal if not the same in my results

    A similar, tidier method is to drill a small hole, say about 2 mm dia., through the lock bolt, such that the hole is visible in the gap between door and frame. A close-fitting nail or a piece of wire in the hole, will secure the lock from opening.
    Used this method many years ago when I was sharing an apartment. On the weekend we set aside certain times for privacy. Of course my room mate would wander in whenever. He never did figure out what stopped the lock from opening with the key.

      @@PhilCrockett I watched your video carefully and the instructions were to measure the lock - stick the fork in, then mark off with a magic marker and then cut along that line - I assumed you had to be at the location where the lock is in order to measure it. I'm not very mechanical, so it seems that all locks apparantly have the same measurement and therefore one only needs to make this measurement at home, do all the cutting, etc., there and then pack this in one's luggage.
