  • Gaming on Linux is getting better and is a legitimate choice against Windows, even though it still has some problems

Recent Linux Mint convert here myself. I recycled an old Dell tower that was getting thrown out at work, and threw Linux Mint on it since I couldn't be bothered to go through the process of wiping the Windows install that was already there. I'm so glad that I did. Linux compatibility is hit or miss on newer games, but if you enjoy playing older games and like to tinker with things, its an absolute blast. Proton actually works surprisingly well, and Valve's library of games all have direct Linux ports that run great. Highly recommend if you're sick of Microsoft's nonsense.

Tbf i think proton compatibility layer is at a point where it's harder to find games which do not run with it, then the opposite
And most games not supported on linux, is because the devs cockblocked it (even though it would work anyway), or because of the kernel level virus they call cheat detection, which is harder to port to linux (and honestly it's just crazy to give RING 0 access to a proprietary piece of code, which will scan your entire computer to avoid you thinkering with a single game)

I'm playing games like Helldivers 2 and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart in Windows-native performance with full DualSense functionality on Linux and it's giving me some kind of inner peace while playing because I know at the same time these blockbuster games are being played on *Linux* and not Windows.

remember, dual booting is a viable option. I need windows for FL studio and VR games, but if i'm not doing those i can just use linux for pretty much everything else

I'm keeping Windows 10 on one hard drive for any games or programs that don't work on Linux.
But my other hard drive and primary boot is Linux now.

Alright, I know I'm the old man shouting at the clouds here, but "Debian" is not pronounced "dee-bee-en" It's short for "Debra" and "ian", the founder and his girlfriend's names. Sad story there, but in short, it's "Deb" and "Ian". Deb-ee-an. Thanks!

That bothered me as well but lots of things have a lot of different pronunciations in the FOSS world it seems. GNOME is particularly controversial as it's an acronym but a lot of people pronounce it like the short humanoid and even I myself can't bring myself to put a hard G in there but it makes more sense for GNU because pronouncing it like the wildebeest makes it sound like "new Linux." The GNOME team themselves said it can be pronounced either way, even if the original intended pronunciation was with a hard G. Likewise, MATE is named after yerba mate, which is a Spanish name, not English.

Im pronouncing it very french to f with ppl, like Deu-bi-onh. Especially in situations like at work you can see the people die inside. Lul. My bubble found it funny the first few times. Tbf I don't talk a lot about debian

LMAO, you can even play more games on a (M1) Mac with Linux on it that without.
It's still early exploration & testing but damn it moves fast.

Been doing Proton reports lately and yeah, linux gaming is really something. Surprised how good it is when i recently did a research challenge on myself to see if it's still fluff. It works allright. But it is still a case by case albeit proton helps enormously. Grand majority works easily. But programs that launch and then launch something else has a tendency to not work or need tinkering. Assetto Corsa for example is borked because of it's way it loads its add-on store. Then there is the usual 'you need to install this anti-cheat' stuff on kernel level. hah. hehehe.....no.

I'v been using linux for little over a year now and except forza horizon 5 which for some people works fine out of the box and for others (like me) doesn't work at all no idea why. With this exception my only problems were with anticheats and not because of lack of compatibility of the anticheat but because the option is not enabled (i'm looking at you fortnite/eac).
But I would also recomend getting an amd gpu if you can afford it because it work way better than nvidia on linux. But if you can't get an amd gpu nvidia is getting better nowadays

The only game I play that has anti-cheat is Halo MCC and that actually works under Proton just fine. I dont intend to ever play any other vame that has an anti-cheat. Competetive gaming is boring, I prefer single player games. Even in Halo I only play a handful of the less-traditional game modes like Griffball. Otherwise, just single player and co-op.
I do use my computer for a lot more than that, but as I'm poor my workflows all involve free software anyway, which tends to hit Linux before anything else.

My biggest problem with Linux is installing apps. the other day I downloaded an app with .appimage extension. all I could do was to launch it, it had no Icon and no way to install it. also it needed more access to do some of it's functions (I just do run as administrator in windows with said app) and Linux did not have an easy option for that. it also lacks a proper task manager like the one windows has, I really need this basic functionalities.

    I sooo wish I could agree, but I can't.
I started with Linux a year ago... I had Nvidia at the time... I was told Nvidia worked better than it ever has... My experience was pretty pathetic... It couldn't even run Stardew Valley at 15 FPS without oscillating between normal colors and washed out colors every other frame...
So I switched to AMD... I was told AMD should just work... That has also, not been my experience. I'm sitting in my terminal, and upside-down ankles deep in the Arch Wiki right now scratching my head wondering why my games INSIST on running off my CPU graphics. At least it's better than that 15 FPS epilepsy trigger, but no:
Linux doesn't get the "Better Gaming than Windows" badge at least until it can actually tell with GPU it should be using, and I love Linux...

Sounds like you went with Arch as your fist distro, I would suggest using Linux Mint instead, or if you really insist on using Arch based, maybe try Manjaro instead as installing NVIDIA drivers is a little easier. Arch is great for power users that want to control everything that's going on with their system, but for new users you're probably just in over you head and instead need to focus on building up your foundational understanding of how Linux works with a more streamlined experience that works better out of the box.

Don’t go vanilla arch if you don’t know your way around Linux
If you want something arch based, get Garuda or Manjaro (although I don’t recommend Manjaro too much bc they have had issues with packages)
If you want something that works but ain’t the newest of the newest, get Fedora
And if you want full stability, and don’t care to have the newest versions of programs, get Linux Mint or PopOS
Those are wayyy more beginner friendly than Arch

    • @zerrubabbel
      @zerrubabbel Месяц назад

Thanks for the suggestions. But despite the fight to get the proper video output working, I'm happy with everything else on vanilla Arch. My move to Arch itself was inspired by searching for a more stable experience than Garuda (and Manjaro to some extent)... And for the most part, I've found just that.
Someday, hopefully sooner rather than later, my persistence will pay off.

@@zerrubabbel I don't know why folks are saying that PopOS is outdated, it's got 6.9.3 and newest Mesa, works amazingly on a 7950X+7900XTX. Sure, the rest of userspace is 22.04 and therefore pretty old, but that gets fixed in the next couple of months.

    check this out:
    Laptop -> Toshiba Sattelite L745.
    SPECS:
    I5-2410M -INTEL HD 3000- 4GB RAM DDR3 - 120GB - DEBIAN 12 WITH GNOME
    WINDOWS VS DEBIAN GNOME:
    MINECRAFT -
    Windows: Default settings 1366x768= ~20fps
    DEBIAN: Default settings 1366x768= ~70fps
    CS SOURCE:
    Windows: low settings 1366x768= ~25fps
    DEBIAN: low settings 1366x768= ~49fps
This happends with literally any valve or any other game. Mesa Drivers + Optimized linux distro makes the difference.
debian 12 manages the ram incredibly. i use YT with 3 chrome tabs and Eclipse IDE, and it almost doesnt have stuttering.
But it can't be possible using windows, no matter wich version. even with windows 7 it lags.
