This legitimately happens to me in one of my plays. I was basil II and have fewer troops at the beginning and i was adjoining with india chandragupta (the beta who hates being close to anyone). The fucker declare surprise war against me despite being friends. From the other side i have Alexander and Gilgamesh, this one declare other war and denounce betadrangupta. Alexander helped me just after given him some money and horses.
We won the war and wipe out betadrangupta.
I will be in forever thankfull with the greatest alpha friend Gilgamesh.

Yep, if gilgamesh, tomyris, Wilfred, poundmaker, or even alexander (if he doesnt start near you), are in game consider yourself blessed. They end up becoming powerful allies for most of the game esp alexander as you dont have to be the one declaring wars for him to like you. And of course gilgabro due to insta friend.

One of thing annoying about facing the Romans is the All Roads lead to Rome bonus for Trajan as it allows him to move his troops easily throughout his cities within trade route range of the capital. Which means he can spread his Legions out quickly. These trade routes also provide enough gold for a player (If one is playing as Trajan) to use to purchase joint war and troops. Said troops can then be spread out with the trade routes that are got for free.

I would like to mention Egypt as an honorable mention. While the Maryannu Chariot Archers are garbage to the player, to the AI who can cheat on production and gold, they can get 4-5 roaming about by turn 30 especially on Deity. And since Egypt agenda wants you to have a higher military score, that is going to be near impossible and so an angry Egypt will rush you with a slightly weaker but more mobile version of crossbowmans which is an instant restart. I do not know if anyone has every experienced starting next to Egypt but they are genuinely the worst.

I would like to shout out Gaul here as another absolute nightmare of a neighbor. On higher difficulties the AI has the production to spam out tons of Gaesaetae, and with Gaul's combat bonuses they are tough as hell to deal with. And his agenda is that he dislikes those with less military than him, so he WILL hate your guts in the early game.
And even if you survive the Gaesaetae zerg rush and turn it around, the fact that he gets Oppidums can make invading his territory almost impossible.
And as a bonus he has a less severe version of the Babylon barbarian problem, as he can get apprenticeship (and thus men-at-arms) super early.

The thing that makes Rome not QUITE so bad is that you can settler-steal from them. A Lot.
The thing that makes Mongolia even worse than you described is the poor implementation of unit classes - It's supposed to be like rock/paper/scissors: melee>anti-cav, anti-cav>cavalry, cavalry>melee. But the anti-cav can't fulfill their purpose. The +10 bonus just covers the difference in base strength (it used to be only on defense which made them completely pointless, the cavalry just fought around them) and more importantly, they can't catch them for the kill. Ranged can be kind of effective against other civ's cavalry if you can set a trap for multiple first strikes, but against Genghis and his strength bonus, they can still one-shot your ranged units even if you get first strike. So the only defense against cavalry is cavalry, especially against Genghis, and his are stronger than yours and you're building his army if he gets the kill. This also makes you quite often withdraw instead of getting the kill because he'd get a unit back by finishing yours. And all the while simply building up a cavalry defense against him encourages him to attack you.

Once she drops off later on is when you can do wars if you want a dom victory as most ai cannot scale to late game or stay peaceful and have her at your side the entire game, shes almost as good as gilgamesh esp if nearby.

Very cool list, I wondered who all would show up.
I definitely try to give Vietnam the best friend treatment whenever she shows up. You lose soooo much time fighting her even if you win she has slowed you down so much that somebody else has gotten ahead or caught way back up.
This game can be super rough. I've had to pivot to a completely different victory type well after turn 100 just because of who all shows up to play. Like for example Vietnam in the middle of a domination game and she has most of her continent.
It's impressive how people can just basically pick a random civ and get a win on deity with what looks like no difficulty

Definitely concur with Aztecs. They dominate in every game I see them in. Last game they completely conquered or nearly conquered 5 entire civs. When I saw them rocking nuclear submarines when I still had Jongs (I was Indonesia) I knew they must have did some conquering. And eventually discovered how big their landmass was. Took the entire game to catch up in tech, eventually sent 4 loaded carriers a couple of GDR's (all I had Uranium for) and quite a few cruisers up against around 15 GDR's they were sporting. Pretty epic game, but I will say the AI is pretty bad at using GDR's, otherwise I would have been in trouble.
As for Rome, got lucky with them last time, they declared, but I managed to take them out before they got their Legions out.

On paper Mongolia is terrifying but from my experience Mongolia's AI always shits the bed and doesn't do anything all game and is almost always really friendly towards me and if youre worried about him stealing your horse just uh dont build horses lol you know hes gonna throw 100 horses at you so just build like 3 pikes and hes fucked
Also I would definitely put Macedon and Persia on this list, Alexander is always flipping his hair at me and murdering literally every civ in the game in the classical era and Persian immortals are a pain in the ass to deal with and they will always instantly surprise war you
For some reason Australia's AI is always insanely aggressive every time I see them. They declare war on me, I beat them back, I take one or two cities away from them, make peace, and then every single time without fail they always call an emergency on me because I razed one city after they tried to invade me and everyone agrees Im the bad guy and the whole word wants to kill me bro Im playing France I just want to build wonders leave me fuck alone

ya hes acutally one of the better ais to get, i'd say his grandson is worse due to a more annoying angenda. Just dont build horses and if he does declare war, switch to the best anti cav unit you have. But as long as you dont build horses theres a better chance he will switch to friendly and then you get a very strong ally to protect you for most of the game while he falls behind due to going to war vs other ai.

I don’t agree you said that Babylon still needs production and gold to make advanced units. Especially on deity difficulty, ai esp Babylon can cheat production to make advanced units so fast in ancient era. If you spawn next to Babylon, it’s normal to see Babylon conquering city states with crossbows and pike and shots in ancient and classical era.

I find many civs annoying when im going for a culture victory but probably russia is the worst. Arabia and Spain are annoying religious civs because they love to stack religious combat modifiers. Teddy can be very annoying neighbor if on same continent, Elanor will loyalty pressure you, as will anyone that builds huge cities like khmer. Big cities also get high combat strength. I think some of the AI's are more annoying because of their behavior rather than their abilities, like Arabia and Spain, where you would think russia or ethiopia would be a more annoying religious neighbor, which they can still be annoying religious neighbors sure but its mainly just + faith income.

for me, monoglia isnt really that bad as his agenda is he hates civs that build more horses then him and if he starts that close you will know right away and as long as you dont do horses he will evernutally go friendly and having him as friendly helps protect you so well esp if someone else declares war on you. The only time this might happen is if you are in the classical and you then meet him and then he sees your horse army forcing the denounce.
The worst ones I noticed is Rome like you stated, you must have more cities then him and since he gets 2 settlers and increased production ya lol. Hammurabi (babylon) due to him supercharging the barbs, he doesnt even have to attack you, just him existing makes barbs more annoying.
Seondeok (korea) shoots ahead in deity and then declares war on you when you cannot keep up esp with her boosted hacks in deity. Cyrus (persia) hates ppl that dont declare surprise wars which is suicide to do that early in the game esp vs him, if you can surivive long enough the world will hate him and wipe him out esp if he decalres war on you and you already are allied with good war civs, he'll get wiped out but starting near him oof. Pedro 2 (brazil) if you get too many great anything he declares war, so ya if you are playing good hes going to hate you so having him start near you gurantees later on you have to take him out.
couple other dishonorable mentions, kupe, hates those that chop or improve land so hes guranteed to hate you if you play properly i mean who wouldnt chop? and the only thing holding him back is if he doesnt start near you hes not as bad as he denounces you but if he does start close oof. Wilfred (canada like stated) cannot declare war on him without denouncement but if hes far away hes one of the best ais inthe game (easy ally and will to your aid every single time)
and monty isnt that bad, just sell him all your lux even if it will make your people unhappy, do it no matter what, and once he turns friendly you have a very op ally at least until the medival, anyone else who declares war on you must deal with you + him...hes a strong early game ally for sure like summeria or scythia if you can get them on your side to help with wars.

    • @SenorCoupon
      @SenorCoupon Год назад

Yeah, I agree with your Mongolia take. I find that they are *incredibly* easy compared to many civs to get early friendship with. Even against an early aggro Mongolia, usually I find I simply have to survive 10 turns before being able to peace them out, and that gives you all the time in the world to prepare. This is why information is key. Build your early game scouts. That way you know who you are near. If you are near Mongolia, look for the most defensible position, forward settle it, prioritize boosting archery, masonry, and iron working, and get archers/walls/encampments. Now, you won't be able to complete all of those (and maybe 0-1) before the initial attack, so defense tactics to stall are paramount. But early on, 2 archers can hold a defensible position for a long time, especially the better you get at manipulating the AI into bad attacks. Use your scouts as distractions. Buy yourself a few turns. 2 archers plus walls and you should be fine. Get peace. Build an encampment forming a choke point. Now all attackers have to come into range of 4 ranged attacks per turn. This is easy to win. Mongolia is no longer a threat. They will friend you shortly afterward.
Defending against all of these civs is really about learning they are there early, understanding how to defeat or dissuade their aggression, and prioritizing a path that leads to that outcome. Don't be overly greedy. Against Korea, for instance, often early war is best. They rush their campuses, which have to go on hills. This means they often have little to no military, and they are using a production tile up in order to achieve that. So even when they get advanced units, if you have 3-4 archers and 2 -3 warriors, you rotate your tank units while focus firing their advanced tech unit. Korea will not have the production to pump out units quickly bc their tech scales faster than their production and the AI doesn't accommodate.
You exemplify this perfectly with your Aztec strategy. You understand the cause, you formulate a solution, and you execute it understanding the potential ancillary pitfalls. You deal with insufficient luxuries until you can defend yourself, at which point you basically have a free buffer between yourself and anyone who could get aggressive from that direction. Weakness into strength.
