- California Dreamin' by The Mamas & The Papas performed at the first Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. This is the only completely live performance of this song that's available, and unfortunately Michelle's microphone was not working due to The Who destroying the equipment before they went on stage. There was no playback speaker so Michelle did not notice until halfway through the show, which is why she does not just move over to Cass's mic. (Michelle herself stated in an interview that she didn't notice until halfway through their set, but if you look at around 0:47, it really looks like she is trying to tell someone that her mic doesn't work)
To give an idea of what it would've sounded like if Michelle's mic was working, I've taken the left side audio and inserted it into the Monterey performance. I'm no audio editor and they speed up a lot live right from the jump, so I did my best at syncing them together. Enjoy!

“The Mamas & the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California, which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group was composed of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips,[2] the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s.”
This is a rare pop song that contains a flute solo. Even more surprising, it's an alto flute, which is larger than a regular flute and plays in a lower register. A jazz player named Bud Shank was brought to the session to play it.
Doug Thompson tells this story: Denny Doherty once told me that when they were recording that song, they wanted a solo, but didn't want the usual guitar solo. John Phillips walked out into the hall of the Hollywood recording studio they were at and Bud Shank was in that hallway as well. John grabbed him and brought him into the studio. Shank listened to the hole he was supposed to fill and nailed it on the first take.
Also I’d just like to point out that the studio vocals don’t clash with the live vocals and they blend perfectly so they are impressively on pitch live
I was curious if you had to change the pitch of the studio version but that’s honestly incredible that you didn’t have to
Excellent job Alec! For some unfathomable reason there is no other live performances recorded of The Mamas and The Papas.
Thank you so much!! Yes it is unfortunate. There is only one other available clip of them singing 100% live and it’s them singing I Call Your Name and Somebody Groovy. Back then it was commonplace for performers to lip sync on TV, and unfortunately TV programs are pretty much the only performances we have access to. They did dozens of live shows, but recording devices weren’t as accessible back then like they are now. Here is the link to the performance I mentioned earlier, incase you haven’t seen it :) ruclips.net/video/R659YufiEeU/видео.html
@@PapaAlec Thank you... And yes I'm aware of that performance/link. I am from that era. Actually though many of the big groups at that time performed live on their TV appearances... IE Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding company.. The Doors.. many more. I'm sure you're aware of that. I meant their actual live performances that no one even made field tapes of them live. It makes you wonder what they actually sounded like when all the sound was mixed correctly and things were in sync. They only had about 60 performances under their belt before they broke up. Anyway... Real good job Alec!
@@bluzmansb5683 correct, I just said it was commonplace, but many did perform live… that’s cool you were around back then😁 and it’s funny you mention the Doors because I think it was their moment on Ed Sullivan that made him more skeptical to let people sing live on his show! But yes, I so wish I could hear a legit live performance by The M&Ps where everything was working properly. Cass herself claimed that they rehearsed long grueling hours to make sure they sounded just as good live as they did on the record!! Thanks again for the comment!!☮️❤️🎶
Don't get me wrong, I like Michelle Phillips' voice, but the effective solo of Mama Cass "dreamin'" at c. 2:10 puts me in another world.
Without BOTH it just wouldn't have been like the Beatles. Xxo
Thank you so much Alec! I’ve been hoping for a miracle like this one. It didn’t sound the same with just three vocals.😉
Awesome video/remix! As much as a powerhouse Cass' voice was, one can appreciate Michelle's contribution to the group's over all sound when you hear the original recordings at Monterrey when Michelle's mike was not working. John, Denny and Cass were missing something without Michelle's light soprano. This is probably what they sounded like at most of their live performances. The Hollywood Bowl farewell performance has been said to the be their best. Too bad that wasn't recorded.
Thank you for your comment!! Yes it’s definitely evident how much Michelle’s voice contributed to the group when you watch this and hear how different it sounds. However, this was notably one of their worst performances (they’ve said so themselves) so I’d say their live performances were probably much better than this! They hadn’t been together in months until the night of their Monterey performance. I wish there was footage of the Hollywood Bowl as well! And their Carnegie Hall performance, which I’ve heard was arguably their best live performance☺️
Cass's mouth was a fine vibrant loudspeaker but Also we shouldn't 'underestimate' Michelle, she was an etherial force that balanced the soundscape with her sweet soprano flavour. They were a together thing and contributed to each other in this divine harmonic dream-team. I'm a late '70s /'80s teen but the only reason i would have also liked to live in the '60s was this band.Such a shame no live touring footage is saved somewhere by TMATP..What a crime.
Great job!! Would be awesome hear Michelle's voice in every Monterey performance
Thank you so much! I’m slowly working my way through the other songs, but they’re much more difficult than California Dreamin’. In the original audio, the guys are in one ear and the girls in the other so it’s very easy to split.. unfortunately the other songs aren’t so cut and dry! But we’ll see if I can make it work!😅 thanks for watching!
Nice. I can't stop of watching this
I wish I had a magic wand and could have fixed her mic. It's so upsetting that you can't hear her, but this is the next best thing.
If I had a magic wand I’d go back in time and take her on a date
I read somewhere only the mic that was recording her was dead, not the feed to the audience. So while her vocal was not preserved for posterity, those there got to hear it.
Maybe so… I hadn’t heard that before. I was under the impression that the audience couldn’t hear her either
Wonderful job Alec....are you planning to do the same on ALL the other songs of the M&P at Monterey? That would be beautiful beyond words. I like Cass' voice but I relate more to Michelle's. Thank you.
Thank you so much for doing this!!
Awesome!!!👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌💖
great work
This is really well done! Congrats!!
Dream❤
You are right; she's looking at the soundboard which was located to her right.
Thank you so much for this
Awesome!
Thank you for this video!
YES YES YES YES YES
Got a Feelin' please!!!!
Whoa!
"If i didn’t tell her .."
Think. What is goin' on in this song?
He is troubled. He could run away if he doesnt tell her ...
The preacher knows he is too stuck to tell her the truth.
Blame The Who
They were on earlier and broke Michelle's mic 😢
Are you sure . . .
I looked at 0.47 to see her saying something ....... and I just wanted to kiss her
was this in monterey mexico?
Monterey, California😊
@@PapaAlec thanks I just found out it was a big venue
California!
