My dad passed away yesterday and now I'm making a playlist with all the songs he loved and I remember him by. This is one of them. Thank you dad for showing me the greatest artists of all times. Loved, missed and never forgotten 🤘🔥❤
My dad passed away June of ‘23 and I miss him so much. Getting to see ELO with his aunt in August. Can’t wait to feel his spirit there with us. Miss you dad. Love you so much.
This is one the best all time anywhere anytime any place singles. I remember hearing it for the first time, empying the piggybank and running down to the record store! Magic.
The violinist is the late great Wilfred Gibson, Wilf quit ELO not long after this was filmed, Wilf had a dispute with Jeff Lynne over the salary that Lynne was paying him. Wilf was certainly a world class violinist.
@@paulbantick8266 When Kaminski joined ELO in the fall of 1973, he used a brown violin like Gibson's, Kaminski also wore a cape like Gibson did for a while. Kaminski got his blue violin from the Barcus Berry company after they'd perfected electric pickups for classical instruments. Barcus Berry only had a blue violin ready for use at the time, so that's the reason Kaminski's violin was blue. Gibson left ELO during the recording sessions for the "On the Third Day" album and only the tracks on side two of the album had been recorded with Gibson playing violin. Kaminski played on all the tracks on the albums side one. Gibson's playing on the album wasn't credited to him, it was all credited to Kaminski. Out of the three ELO violinists only Kaminski is still with us today. R.I.P. Wilf Gibson and Steve Woolam. I've met Mik Kaminski on several occasions when he's been performing with his "Beatles, Blues and Blue Violin" project, he comes across as a nice, genuine and humble guy.
Impressive Jeff Lynne singing live, very good staging the whole band, and Mike Edwards and Colin Walker having fun together as usual. Thank you ELO for all these years of unbelievable music!!!!!!
Jeff Lynne is the most talented Music God ever. He will be 71 in 2018 and his voice is Gold. All his live concerts sound as good if not better than the original recordings...Not many bands and musicians can match that. Just have a listen from Jeff Lynne's ELO at Wembley Stadium June 24 2017... Can't wait to see Jeff Lynne's ELO on the 2018 Europe and North American Tour. I just received my tickets for LA , NY and Toronto Canada. It will be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They opened for Deep Purple around that time and where awesome. The violinist was all in green, even his violin and was running around in circles playing. And the chelo players would play the chelo behind his head. Great show
1973 Panther Hall, Fort Worth Texas was my time to see this lineup. Wilf Gibson running around the stage bin his cape in a usually country venue where Buck Owens had played.
I may have only been 8 years old when this song came out, but I have vivid memories of this song, mainly because my mother wore out the 45 bouncing around the house like a crazed women. ! ya Gotta love that fashion too !
Several years ago I saw an expensive fireworks display with this song as its grand finale. Holy crap -- toward the end they had the explosions coinciding with about every other beat, and it was utterly mind-blowing! On the last note, a big chrysanthemum firework filled the sky, and my co-workers and I just sat there with our eyes glazed. Although the song's been covered by some classic rock acts, ELO's version is my all-time favorite.
Line-up here is: Jeff Lynne - lead guitar & vocals Bev Bevan - drums Richard Tandy - piano Michael D'Albuquerque - bass Wilf Gibson - violin Colin Walker - cello Mike Edwards (in tux and balaclava hat) - cello It's Edwards who was killed recently in that bizarre and tragic fashion, not Gibson.
That was amazing . The blend of the 5th by Beetoven, the Peter Gun bass line bridge ,and the other samples woven into the Chuck Berry classic . The strong and solid power guitar chords made it an ELO song thyat you will never forget .
there was no way of getting a ticket to see this fantastic band when they were playing near us.......always loved them and they are better than ever what iv seen on tv.....FANTASTIC X
Incredible arrangement of a Rock' n 'Roll Classic. The violinist solo is incredible. Jeff Lynne's guitar reminds me of Chuck Berry and his vocals remind me a little of Jerry Lee Lewis' version of this song. WOW!
This is the song that made me take notice of this band back in the 70's and I've been a fan every since. They are nothing less than brilliant and always will be to me.
Have heard reviewers say that this track is out of place on the ELO 2 album and let’s the whole album down. What rubbish! The whole performance, whether the single version, or the longer album version is absolutely tremendous, and is so full of energy, ranging from Bev’s drumming, to the string section, not forgetting Jeff’s vocals and guitar. Fabulous.
As a classically-trained bassist, who, like TAEdison, discovered electricity and had his life change, has still kept a few strings in that world. The strings in ELO used to be part of the on stage musicians, not just sequestered in an however-many piece orchestra. I love the early stuff, because you can see how the string players personalities used to come out on stage. Their set up was pretty trippy if you didn’t know what they were when you went and saw them. Not at all typical of the usual rock bands of the time. It was kind of strange, seeing a cellist in front of what was back, then an equivalent of a full Marshall stack or more. Nevertheless, this rendition, where they have two people playing with Bows on the cello at the same time, is just…je ne sais quoi! It speaks to the personality of what was once the band. Jeff’s personality kinda overcame the others, I think, but when you think about who he was, he was almost another Beatle. Imho, this was the best part and the best work b4 the current space station vibe of the band…
Electric - Lightning- Orchas Rocked this night... still till this day they are underated legends... they dont get much publicity and thats what i like. Classssss
One of my favorite early ELO releases. they did a great job of this Chuck Barry classic. Glad that this live version on Midnight Special was available. Loved it! This version rocks!
I remember hearing their first recording of this classic back in the day. Blew me away. There had been violins and cellos in rock before. But these guys picked it up a notch!
I had just graduated high school earlier this summer. We were sitting around watching Midnight Special because Richard Prior was hosting then this new Band called Electric Light Orchestra came on and we were blown away!

Love this, memories of discos back in the seventies, even now gets you going, and Jeff, well he's one of a kind, love the outfit keep rolling lads 🎸🎹🥰🤗
This is a great version. I saw them in concert in 1974, wow! They did an 11 minute version with about a 5 minute violin solo by the violinist here. I just watched the 1976 version and it had morphed into something not so good as this more pure version. Thanks!

The violinist just shreds it! Cant remember seeing this much energy from any band since 1973. I have to watch this again...

Not till you see them play you realise how technical this band is truly a great band
Best cover of this Rock & Roll classic
