  • I enjoy live streaming iracing and learning languages through the sims amazing voice chat but with each update iracing keeps adding more and more cars as well as series which are unfortunately thinning out the user base and making the racing worse or in some cases making it imposable to even get a race with certain content.

Before I get comments from pedants saying X Y Z Car i said was close to a gt3 is NOT LIKE A GT3 CAR - Obviously the cars are different but the point is the approach and general nature / how the races end up going with the cars end up being quite similar compared to cars that are VERY different from each other IE Fford compared to GT3 , or F4 Compared to LMP2 or even F2 compared to F4.

What i noticed over the years,
The scheduling is not based on player population, it's based on sales numbers.
Every new competition also adds a combination of tracks AI extracted from user inventory data.
    It's all based on numbers.

I wish they did that too but business wise its a terrible idea for iRacing. They're double dipping with monthly costs and content already so no incentive to make less money. what they should do is let us try the cars before buying at any stage of the season not just a tiny time frame with in updates. Race Room has this option so iRacing could too but they know it will cost them.

Unlike a lot of comments here, iRacing is my favourite sim and I'm happy with the £ I spend (obviously think it should be cheaper but I at least get my ££'s worth).
However, I agree with the overall sentiment of this video. I think they need to be much more cut-throat on removing old series and really concentrate on consolating the cars in ongoing series. To be honest the LMP3, Caddy and Porsche this season are exactly what I think they need to be adding since they either replace series or improve car pools in current ones (apart from the new LMP3 fixed series!) .
For me the biggest content problem is actually the tracks. I love driving the new tracks. I buy most of them (sorry!). However, the average player won't want to spend £10 on Willow Springs and rightly so. Therefore, even the most popular series will be completely dead when these tracks arrive on the schedule. They either need to start updating more old tracks (to be fair this is becoming more common) or some sort of discount bundle system. The track system means absolute bangers like Knockhill and Sandown are always ghost towns which is tragic

  • @evklinken

And you pretty much have to buy the new year's release of the car because the racing series being offered will use that year's version. This honestly made me cancel my iRacing subscription most recently to re-evaluate its value. They shouldn't make your previous purchases obsolete.

I feel like they could easily just rotate cars each season. Do skippy or vee or whatever one season then fford the next. Completely agree though, too many series at once, and then you have no real missing of any particular car. Itd make more sense to do a rotation (in my mind) because then more people are hyped about things like "oh the ford is a series in this season." i guess i get if youre an absolute lover of only one or two cars, that could neuter you for a season. But equally it just seems weird. we dont need 3 almost identical starter formula car series at a time imo. Or just run them like they do irl and cram them into one race/series.

It's not good value if the same thing exists for free or a largely equivalent thing exists for cheaper.
Otherwise it would be like me saying x ice cream was good value because I enjoyed it for 5 min even though it cost $3 when for example in a shop next door they had say much higher quality ice cream for $1 or free.
The fact a person enjoyed the 3$ one is not a justification for it being good value it simply shows they were ignorant of the better option available to them.
Of course someone could totally subjectively enjoy something arbitrarily which is fine but at that point it's not really a positive or negative argument for anything.
10$ might be good value for 5hours entertainment but 5$ would be twice as much value , and ultimately it's not just 10$ as there are price points that exclude people from enjoying things and iracing has a sub + multiple tracks and other aspects involved.

The model is based upon selling content, but there isnt enough of a player base to support this. They have stepped up the release of new content to several cars and tracks with each build. There used to be update only builds, with content as a rare treat. Now everyone demands content, so they react to this without improving the core sim. So they are torn with a finite development resource as if they went 6 months with just the needed updates to physics and FFB for example then the most vocal of the community would complain.
Quality of releases has declined with the increased contents with certain cars remaining broken. Whilst new content is added. Most series are only a single split and some series are empty and dont go official which is becoming more common.

The decompression of racing series caused by all of the newer single make series is really hurting the sim right now. I think an answer would be to start putting more cars into some of the classes that already have a foundation in the sim, such as TCR, GT4, the newer dpi cars etc. The next thing they need to fix is the car type limit that currently exists so that they can start expanding the GT3 field and improve some of the multi-class series to use them at their full potential. Lastly, rather than creating new single make series, add cars to some of the random under utilised series like the GT1 stuff, or the series that has the Audi GTO and Nissan prototype in.

But Its really up to the core players to try out other sims and change this mindset that iRacing is the only sim worth trying, and yes some titles can be more work to get going than others mainly talking about RF2 and AC but its so worth it for the actual fun it produces, the amount of people that tell me iRacing is the only sim to play but after talking to them for a bit they all confess they have not actually tried other sims and just go by what they have seen on youtube, at this stage it feels like talking to a brick wall with most people.

Hello, You are right, but, at the end you find populated series, maybe not the ones you like 100%, but similar classes most of the time. You pay a service, and as vr simracer its amazing, awesome, no the best graphics, but for me the best online experience in vr. That said, yes dead series should be retiredz and the path to add more cars to the existing series will be better than make bew series just with one car. At the end ofnthe week, tracks are the key factor, if you put anything at spa, this serie will be populated. And lot of people dont do series, just decide what to race based on the track/car combo. Anyway theres a lot of other options out there like ams2, gt3/spa ssmulator aka acc, etc, but no other sim has the online and vr , so its not perfect, but its great, and yes its outdated in some ways, but who knows maybe someday they will improve all that things some people are suggesting to imprpve build after build.

The main problem for me is, that the engine is so limited, you can only have 7/8 3D Models on track at the same time. Something which stands out against for example ACC, where 32 people can un 16 different GT3 and still be on the same server in the same race. Thats especially annoying in multiclass-racing. Having 4 different GTP, +1 LMP2 limits the number of GT3 to 3 cars - mostly ending up in having to run a new content car in GT you never bought or were interested in. That's just rubbish, you should be allowed to run whichever car you like in a specific class. It's not like the engine is super complex or new and can't run 20 different models at the same time. iRacing is just afraid five people with a Pentium 4 and a CRT screen would sue them because their game is stuttering with 9 different Models on track...

The reason your seeing lower entries in some series this week is due to the 6hrs at The Glen this weekend. Imsa series races are getting massive splits in preparation for that race and will effect every other series.

I think you make some compelling arguments. I look at things in a slightly different way. I appreciate iRacing bringing out new content. Then I, as the consumer, can decide if I wish to purchase the content and attempt to enjoy it. We, as the consumers of the game, decide if we wish to stay with a current car and series or try something new. For instance as in you point with Skip Barber v the formula Fords, if the majority of the racers decide the Ford is more enjoyable to race, then those people will migrate to that series. iRacing makes a gamble as a company, I am sure developing a new car has a cost associated with it, that enough people will purchase the content to make their investment worthwhile. But we as the consumers make the ultimate decision on what we want. If the new content draws from an existing series, it means that those people wanted a change and probably enjoy it. Some enjoy the original series and so far, iRacing still offers the Skip Barber series for them to enjoy.
If your goal is to find close racing with many splits, you can still do that. Just look for what is popular and join in. It may be a different car and series, but you should be able to do so.
At least the game is evolving and attempting to stay current. With the investment most of us have made in our sim rigs, its nice to have a competitive environment with which to e enjoy that investment. All the other sims I have tried loose my interest quickly, but I still daily enjoy iRacing content.

You cas a consumer also get to enjoy worse racing with no splits with a bunch of cars due to them adding more and more cars so the joy is in then trying to guess what wont just die
If you have lots of disposable income and don't care about the pricing then sure it is what it is but normally when it comes to products price is a consideration and when the design of a product removes usability of a product then that's also a concern and against "consumer choice"
New cars do have a cost for sure and it depends on the cars and licences but other sims also manage to add cars that drive better / are equivlent in detail for much less cost or even free.
