iDrive with touchscreen climate controls and NO rotary dial. An improvement?
Give us a 👍 or a 👎 below 👇👇
No
My QUESTION to You is Did you Bother to Ask BMW why there’s No rotary dial and what’s there thinking etc….Sadly from this video You seem Have Not too and just made a judgment….oh and why did you Not show the Luxury line as was there in white ?
👎
a major fuck up if you ask me, an epic fail! The only way I control the infotainment is using the rotary knob. I hope they will not remove this at the next facelift of one series and I'll be able to get one with the current set up.
@@f1b1777 enlighten us, why? as you clearly know why.
The old adage, ‘don’t fix it if it ain’t broke’ springs to mind
Fire the idrive tech guy and the designer ASAP
Big improvement inside... Except for losing physical climate controls!
You are comparing the new Active Tourer to the old Gran Tourer though. That’s why it looks less like a van.
Yeah, it's just so brainless how people call this car a people mover since it's obviously a hatchback. Only thing that makes it different from many other hatchbacks is its higher roofline due to sharing the platform with X1 and Countryman.
Indeed, Doug made himself look like a right plonker with the picture of the Grand Tourer.
You lost me at the entertainment system, I will never buy a buttonless car until the voice activation is flawless
All these features are bullshit. They're not essential or necessities, but luxuries. As long as the car can take me from A to B safely and reliably I am good.
@@borinvlogs I think the same way but when they bury the essential stuff into a computer (radio / heater / heated seats) then they have no clue what we actually want
I’ve owned many BMW’s I have two at the moment, I’m a fan, but not of their new stuff. The front radiator treatment looks horrible, I’d need to be blind to accept that then the touch screen would put off, I’ve had touch screen controls for climate and it’s just dangerous.
Could not agree more …it’s ridiculous these controls.
This car, along with most new Bimmers, is an affront to car design, at least on the exterior. Since the F10, the F22 is the last good looking model that BMW has made, and even worse, more and more their cars are as lifeless and floaty as Mercedes (but much uglier).
The fact that you can't tell the difference between the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer shows that motoring-journalists (particularly in the UK) never really took this decent car seriously.
Still it's caught your eyes now!
As for this upcoming version, some improvements for sure - the old A-Pillar blind-spot issue looks like it's been addressed- but also some disappointments - iDrive 8 - and ones that are likely going to be introduced throughout BMWs other series'.
On top of that, mentioning old things like the microphones above the front seats, but not talking about important things such as how the old hybrid models came with a 6 speed manual gearbox really shows this guy doesn't know anything about the car. The 225xe is a very popular model where I live due to low taxation and the 4 wheel drive, but it gets so little coverage by the British media.
Oh dear; after they’ve spent the last few years buggering up the styling of their range they’ve now removed the remaining reason to buy a BMW.
Can’t agree more! I owned a long series of BMWs ending with the last 3 series. They became less and less enjoyable to drive from the pinnacle of a E46 M3 Coupe to the very disappointing F30 330d MSport (dead steering, awful visibility, terrible ride,) but with excellent infotainment. Can’t imagine buying another BMW in the foreseeable future.
Hideous
That interior with the single ac vent in the middle.. fugly to say the least. Proportions are messed up
@@ianelliott229 Did you drive G20? Because i have no idea what the hell are you talking about? Absolutely the best looking BMW in years, with perfect handling and interior.
6:50 I just imagine the poor distracted driver careering into the car in front as he fiddles with that awkward and laggy touch screen.
OMG I love BMW 330E because of I Drive dial and physical AC buttons...absolutely ridiculous to go backwards
There’s a reason why it’s happening.. voice recognition is getting cleverer. In five years, we won’t need any centre control buttons, although they’d be available as an option for those who prefer.
A good job a lot of modern cars have collision avoidance systems, those screens are so distracting.
That HUD is like going back ten years !!!
It does make me wonder who they do product testing with. The rotary dial since it was introduced has been a game changer. I've driven some cars which have a touch pad similar to most laptops which is also OK, but touch screens as the main input mechanism isn't good from a usability perspective. As the screen becomes covered in finger prints the inputs often degrade so a backward step for me although possibly not a deal breaker.
What are BMW doing?! First they give their new cars ugly front nostrils, then make cars front wheel drive and now get rid of the rotary control for the iDrive system. Where as Mercedes and Audi (for me anyway) have done the opposite! Those two are more desirable for me now.
go get a Merc or Audi then :D
Why are Car Manufacturers getting rid of buttons and knobs
Cost reduction.
Whoever is in charge of BMW design should be fired immediately
When I first saw this design, I thought that it was an April Fool's joke, like something made by Homer Simpson.
I am pleasantly surprised that BMW remained on the platform of the minivan. I have a BMW 218d / 2018, and I will definitely take this new model as well. The dimensions of this car are ideal for both city driving and highway. Driving characteristics are more than good and there is no need to waste words on BMW engines. Flawless!
Agreed. Mines a 2018 218d as well
I have another 218 AND i suscribe your words. Perfect balance size space AND performance
Platform of the minivan? Last I checked neither BMW X1 or Mini Countryman were minivans. This is a hatchback and is built on the exact same platform.
@@I_THE_ME Think that’s just a term used in certain parts of the world. We would never call any passenger cars vans/minivans in the UK. But they do in Germany and USA etc.
Has it been reliable?
Great but I prefer the circular speedo and revcounter dials!
Does the FWD have torque steer under hard acceleration?
I just notice, there is no iDrive controller wheel at the center console anymore in this all-new 2-Series Active Tourer.. Whereas in the BMW iX SAV, i4 Gran Coupe, and 4-Series Gran Coupe which all use the same and latest Operating System 8, the iDrive controller wheel is still there... Why...?
I have 225i sport version. Fun to drive with practical and lots of space. This new looks beautiful but no físicas buttons and majority voice control may kill one of the best infotainment system ever.
I want something similar but full electric any suggestions?
It looks exactly like a Merc B class, just as a BMW version.
Fantastic job. My current Active Tourer is excellent, definitely getting this new one.
You'd be pretty disappointed tho...
@@georgedowns4034 Think I’m more than capable of deciding for myself. It looks fantastic and I will be ordering one.
@@Pipsicle330 👍
@@Pipsicle330 not just the looks tho, the infotainment system seems to have gotten worse...
@@georgedowns4034 Don’t buy one. Looks fantastic and perfect for me. Love the dual screen set up. Very smart. My current one doesn’t even have Apple Car Play. This new one looks excellent.
Thanks man. Good job.
BMW, the Ultimate Nostril Machine.
Now with added bad ergonomics!!
Same mistake as VW with their new infotainment system. Less intuitive to use on the move.
Maybe the intention is to encourage the driver to focus on whats around them and deter them from fiddling on the move? Just a thought….
It’s like the designer took my Metamucil daisy-chained poo out of the toilet in the morning & traced round it on a piece of paper
Will there be a 7 seater version?
Just use voice control for climate control both fan and temperature are adjustable. Been doing that on my 2020 1 series for the past one year… works flawlessly. Can even control with voice whether fans blows at chest and/or feet without buttons. Frankly, I don’t use the rotary dial on the 1 now as much compared to my old 2GT with old operating system. That’s because the new 1 has a touchscreen rendering the dial almost redundant. Just takes up space now, really. So I can see why they might want to remove it, especially for a smaller car where space is more of a premium?
Great review! Doug is also looking
Can You predict when new X1 will have its premiere?
BMW X1 F48 and the 2 AT/GT models had no radars on the UKL platform, the ACC/front collision was done only via camera located on top of the windshield
Is it only me or all the comaprison shots you show of the previous generation are not the Active Tourer but the Grand Tourer?
Exactly my thought
the previοus model that you mention, and appeared in white color (e.g. at 01:04 01:29 it is NOT the Active Tourer but the Grand Tourer
Surprised no Adaptive Cruise control or even option, just standard cruise control included which is poor for a Tourer model although this may be because of parts shortages (plugin model)
Nice update (dial excepted) but such a shame no Grand Tourer have to stick with an X series for my 3 dogs.
Why isn’t there going to be a seven-seat Gran Tourer version this time?
I love BMWs take on the Vauxhall Zafira
Nice design, i like it a lot the in and outside of the car
With blackout grill it will look very good👍
At least it’s not as horrifying as the iX… I was worried when I saw a 4 series the other day… It’s one hell of a 🐽
With such a great voice control do really need the control wheel.
Why isn’t there going to be a seven-seat Gran Tourer version this time?
I see they followed the golf with hearing control on screen
Why? Is it a cost issue?
*At least MPVs are coming back! Love this car! The interior is beautiful and I love the tech! Better than the 1 series!*
Rather have a DS4 for £5k less, which looks and feels like a premium car.
why is this the best looking interior in any bmw
At 1:32 that's a 2 Series Gran Tourer, not a 2 Series Active Tourer
WHY BMW WHY!!! What is it with this new found allergy to physical buttons and dials! At what point did we as consumers say we hated physical buttons!
It’s cheaper to make.
I think it is because of Tesla. Tesla's became desirable and have no buttons so designers wanted to be cool. Problem is Tesla's have amazing performance, range, are fully electric and don't look like guinea pigs.
"... Which is a lot sportier and sleeker than the old Active Tourer, just look here..."
*Shows a picture of the old 7-seat gran tourer*
How much time was put into this
Mostly it appears to be an improvement, albeit I'm not a fan of BMW's new grilles. However, the big problem for me would be the lack of a rotary controller. Touchscreens are all about showroom appeal, not driver usability on the road. Audi started this stupidity with deletion of their rotary controller but I thought BMW management were sensible enough not to follow suit - how wrong I was.
Agree. This is a major step backwards. I tested a volvo v60 with its silly screen only interface before settling on my 3 series touring. I said to the volvo salesman that i thought volvo was about safety... i spent more time faffing with the flaming screen that i found made it too distracting to drive.
For me idrive wins hands down.
Are manufacturers actually bothering to use these things whilst on the move? Their 'hey' functions are mostly garbage too. I will never buy a car with no physical buttons to interface with.
That is some really laggy stuff at 5:51. Weird how a cheap ipad is a million times better than a really expensive car.
It's a pre-production car. Not the final version that will come out of a factory. He even said it in the video.
why are you comparing the active tourer with the old grand tourer. Fair would be to compare the side view of the new active tourer with old active tourer side view. The largest wheels on the previous generation was also 19"
rear looks like any car. no idrive system is scary cuz I love it. not to forget physical buttons. but yea, as I say for years now, fire the design staff completely.
I’ve just ordered this and looking forward to it ❤
Getting mine on Friday. Still a bit unsure if I have made the right decision though but too late now!
@@JP-sj5zn why are you unsure? Mines not coming til mid July and I’m in 2 minds too now 🙈😂
At 1:33 you took a Photo of a gran tourer?
I like it. The new front gives it the look of a guinea pig, or something.
Looks like it is less practical than the old car, why no 7 seat version? Much prefer the styling though and from experience of using the touchscreen and voice control set-up in my Audi, motoring journalists make way too much of this issue, you soon get used to it.
Even my 2016 3 series has a heads up display without the purpose built pop up, why couldn’t they just project it onto the windscreen like before?!
The angle of the windscreen is not the correct angle to reflect the HUD image, hence the Mickey Mouse version on this car, just like the previous model.
Why do you keep showing the grand tourer as comparison?
Perfect replacement for my Citroen Berlingo.
Looks nice but Waiting for X1 news
amazing car
Do car BMW designers/engineers not listen to not Listen to the public must they just do what other manufacturers do and insist on coming up with ugly front grills and now doing away with idrive!!!
They don’t. Most pre production reviewers of the latest VW models were saying the haptic feedback infotainment controls were terrible but they kept them. It’ll be the same with BMW. These new controllers are cheaper to manufacture.
Looks a lot better than a new standart 2 series!
I will buy the 2 ltr phev but yes I will miss the twiddly knob
i think it looks very good, interior is just wow for that class, way better looking than 1 series 2 series gran coupe and new 2 series coupe
The 2GT made sense as it had 7 seats but I’ve never got the point of the 2AT. Why would you buy this over an X1?
I personally dislike the look of the X1, that’s why!
BMW should do a Panel Van version.
It’s a miss for me. The VW golf looks better. Think I’ll stick with my E550 and ‘04 X-type for now.
This BMW 2 Series is not inported to the USA Shores Sad!
very nice Bmw
I imagine they lining up to add rotary control as an EXTRA
The day BMW launched this bus was the day that urine extraction became the new Bavarian business.
which has more legroom in the back? this bmw or the european sportage?
4:19 7 speed? You mean 8 speed?
iDrive always had the edge over any other car manufacturer but it looks like it's time to step down!! Of course, this is just my personal opinion!! ✌️✌️✌️
Passenger side how to adjust heater / air con and audio control ? 😂🤔
But great design!
50 miles Ev range in Plugin Hybrid 👍
Well, a Mercedes C series can go over 60 miles and it's priced quite similarly to the 225xe.
But no match for lexus lm or alphard
BMW styling department need to employ a new designer looks wise. Just plain dull 😑 😴
It's a hatchback with suv space or a suv without the raised ride height.
A great compromise then :-)👍
@@rimmerblues1586 also because it’s so ugly, no risk of theft. 👍😌
@@kinocchio now i know why mine was okay even though i left the doors unlocked 😂
Is this a little man standing next to small car, or a tall man standing next to a tall car ??
This ugly car is a weird van suv hybrid so it’s pretty big
Who are they aiming this car at? You can get a good spec 7 seat suv for less than entry price on this, paying for the badge I guess
Dead in the water. This is nicely finished but oooooold. Step it up. What is new???
Big mistake BMW, reason i got my 1 series, rotary controls and buttons
I have no idea why those old guys love that rotary dial.. i drive a BMW and i never use it to be exact i hate it.. thank f.. they got rid of it.. other buttons though i dont know if that was a good idea
Man you're comparing two different cars! The old Gran Tourer with new Active Tourer, like, why?
BMW have really lost their design way on this new series of cars. Hideous front grill that looks like a sticker decal ??! Seems pretty cramped in the back so small people only, and really small boot.
I think the big grill suits big vehicles like the x7 2 series active mpv because its a big vehicle just my feeling
This is everything you need to know...
Eh, it's a car you know... Those things drive.
Am sorry I must missed it what was the So Called Horrifying news about the interior ?
Oh BMW what have you done :(
Wish it was sold in U.S.
Mmm, just what we needed, a Hyundai Trajet that's been crossbred with Bugs Bunny.
Why haven't they given this model there modern H.U.D display, this pop up one looks like something from the 90's.
The angle of the windscreen is to big learned that from a German car channel.
Its pathetic isn't it?
I don't know why they persist with calling this a 2 Series (same with the Gran Coupe). Leave the 1 Series badge for the FWD stuff!
And it looks different to the last one? No it doesn't - it's the same car with a bigger grille and new lights. Woo... Well done BMW! Not.
