It hopes to one day return to heaven from which it fell as an angel, and the Marchosias gundam is reborn as Hajiroboshi in Urdr Hunt. Sadly not many of the gundams really have enough to their stories that match the demons they're named for, but what's there is solid.

Like does that mean if a summoner make a deal with Flauros(the demon) about killing someone else, at the end of the summoner's plan thing will go wrong and the summoner miss his/her "shot"?
I agree, for mecha in my opinion, I have like a big three, all of them being gundam, those big three being IBO, Thunderbolt, and wing and endless waltz with it. In my opinion, amazing shows
One thing to note about the Barbatos is that, as you said, it is aptly named the "Demon Wolf King". Making a deal with a demon is exactly what Mika did. It kept offering him deals as demons do, and he kept gleefully accepting the deals and loosing parts of himself just to fuel his obsession. In the end all he had left to offer was his life, and Barbatos gladly took him with it.
Dude i just realized. The gundam frames are named after devils. Mika sacrifices pieces of himself to gain more access to its power. A literal contract with a devil 😮
Yeah the 72 gundam frames are all named after demons from the 72 keys of Solomon because barbotos is a demon gusion is a demon bael is a demon and all the others mentioned in the anime and manga are all based on the 72 keys of Solomon
I thought the exact same thing when I finished watching IBO. Mikazuki is tied intrinsically to obsession, and Orga is tied to his ambitions, which loop and feed off one another. The downward spiral of Tekkadan in the latter half of season 2 is all because of the despairingly bad decisions made by the characters involved, or the dumb luck that befalls them as consequence. It's in spite of this, with Mika's obsession preventing him from turning tail, and Orga's ambitions being fed fat on Mika's drive that allows the cast to soldier forward.
Let’s not forget, they are/were kids had no one to raise them. So they raised themselves, kids that fought and realized that had amazing powers but with no guidance well proper guidance.
This was a great analysis, but it makes smile when you mention Mika almost being a villain. If you're interested, Boofire191 has a good video on how IBO uses its overall story & frustrating 2nd season to reverse many conventions of the Gundam franchise.
@@TitleTheme Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt is another very good Gundam anime. Also very short with 8 episodes. The main character is quite a doozy. Really good OST, just like IBO. The music is actually what got me to watch the anime. I loved it.
Probably my favorite anime of all time, It made me really sad thought to see mika break himself for what he wanted to do. But at least he had a kid to carry on his legacy

I love how the first season of IBO is fairly standard for a gundam series and then season 2 just sends it down the drain and we start to see how Mika is how you said obsessed he doesn't let anyone slow done he pushes them with grief . And of course I have to mention the best part of the show was when Mr Idiot died thanks IBO

I think the morally grey stories of Gundam are what draw me so much into each series I dive into. What I appreciate so much about IBO in particular is its unique use of its characters to express the fanchise's themes in a completely new and unique way. This video made me think a lot about that, leading me to compare and contrast Mika and Setsuna from 00, and appreciate just how much depth these characters can have. You did a fantastic job with this video.
Biscuit was the checks and balances for the team. The voice of reason. Everything went to hell after his death. Full throttle from Tekkaden goes to their inevitable doom.
I know I'm late to the party here, but another thing to consider about Mika is that he already had everything he needed to be happy. He had something he enjoyed doing (farming), he had goal he wanted to achieve in life (making more crops harvestable on Mars), a place to call home (Sakura's farm) and someone that would be by his side every step of the way (Atra). But because he had already vowed to give Orga everything he had, he was willing to leave behind his friends, his home, his family with Atra and Akatsuki, the son he never got to meet (and Kudelia), and even his humanity meant nothing if it meant fulfilling Orga's orders to the letter. All because his obsession to move forward and Orga's ambitions kept feeding into each other till they inevitably spiraled out of control.
Mika is like a dude who is in the driver seat of the car and just looks at the passenger(Orga) tells him "steer"... then slams his foot down on the accelerator 100% of the way never letting off
I love this anime and i cried when i saw Orga and Mikazuki took their last stand my heart sank so hard i miss them so much and i love how Orga and Mikazuki have that brother like bond, those two and everyone else was so young. I also really love how Mikazuki's character is described so well.
My first series was "Gundam Wing" & I continued to watch all the others one, but IBO is easily my favorite. I've watched it 4 times now & I fall in love all over again - I hope more people watch as time goes on!
The ending is perfect....the whole series makes us see them as big guys who knows hows to do stuff.. But in the end...they were just kids afterall... Perfection
What's good about this series is the fact it is well written, has a gundam design that has a well tethered lore like the unicorn, like imagine 72 demons of ars ghoetia in one series, but this one with mikazuki only show's a few, some manga/novel/sd generations cross rayz and urdr hunt that shows more gundam frame such as gamigin, gremory, vual
Tbh, as much as Amuro, Char, Domon, and Judau are cool. Mikazuki is one of the guys who bears the modern mecha genre (alongside Io Fleming from Thunderbolt). I mean I like him better than Lelouch, Heero Yuy, Shinji, Asuka, and Shinn Asuka PS. Please do an evaluation/retrospect of Char and Amuro's rivalry.
This show was my first dive into Gundam and god damn it had me absolutely hooked. I just rewatched it last week after not watching it for 3 years and god damn I forgot how savage this show was. Probably one of the best Finales too, bitter sweet but wholesome too and part of me hopes that there could possibly be a sequel series of some sorts

This series has a bunch of things that can be dissected, that what makes this series so good. How it's easy it is for heros to become villains, how one wrong step can lead to your doom, and now this video shows how obsession can drive things forward. Love this series
A story about two boys lost is the deep depths of the society and life and a demon within their shadows just finding what they wanted, a place where they feel they should be, a place where they belong. A story of obsession. A curse obsession that have been passed down to those who was ruled by the obsessed rulers. A story about the hunt for creation or destruction. What a wonderful and at the same time a terrifying story of a contract with the devil but the devil is himself.
Fun fact: Barbados is named after the 8th name listed on The Lesser Key of Solomon which holds 72 names (like the 72 Gundam frames) it describes when summoned, he appears “with four nobles kings & their companions in great troops” just like how Orga,Shino, Eugene, & Biscuit ran the show (with chad replacing biscuit) with their many companions… He gives knowledge of past & future events. I just geeked out when I found this out 😂
funnily enough in the ending, the obsessions of Tekkadan and Mcgillis is kinda same but realized in an utterly different forms. I find it super ironic. Tekkadan wanted to free Mars from Gallarhorn by becoming the king of Mars, essentially Tenka Fubu AKA unification of the world by force. MacGillis wants to purge corruption from Gallarhorn by deleting the Seven Stars (excluding the Fareed Family) and guiding the rest by the sheer strength of Bael which is another form of Tenka Fubu. These obsessions are for (arguably) noble goals but the methods is super reckless and utterly destructive, symbolized by Alaya Vijyana System (i prefer calling it "Arayashiki" tbh) and shown by Mika through "making deals with the devil". Tekkadan's obsession is realized by Kudelia in a more democratic and peaceful manners, a welcome ending that Orga can never think of due to circumstances beyond his control. MacGillis's obsession is even more ironically realized by his enemies and in a democratic manner that is achieved by the deaths of Iok Kujan (thank god) and MacGillis himself, essentially wiped the Seven Stars (except the Ellion family) and enabling the arguable transition from autocratic systems to a more democratic one. MacGillis's obsession too spring from circumstances beyond his control. so many similarities in theming LOL
I've always thought Mika as the demon and Biscuit as the angel to Orga. One tells him to just do it and the other stop and think. Barbatos is just a tool, an extension of power, just like other White Demons that came before, as the series has always been about the will of humankind or something like that.
watching IBO reminded me really heavily of red dead redemption 2, strangely enough. this toxic relationship where a bunch of dissatisfied people followed the violent cult of personality of one self centered leader always gunning for more, and i suppose the differences between the two is that tekkadans voice of reason (biscuit) died far sooner that the van der linde gang's (arthur) did, and orga also fully, wholeheartedly believed in what he said and did, even if he only did it out of compulsion (fear?) for someone else
I always thought Mika is a sociopath. I love the way you understood his behavior and Obsession. It is a great insight and knowledge that Gundam series is not always about lame magic powers, unrealistic technology, and god-like idiot protagonist characters. Kids nowadays always say IBO is a badly written series but I beg to differ from their waltdisney thinking. I pretty sure, they haven't read or heard the story of the heroic tales of Achilles and even 300 spartans. I honestly thought the "PLACE" Mika was trying so hard to find and fight for was the battlefield. That's why he died in the battlefield. I never thought there was another meaning to that and then this video comes. This take is actually pretty good and made me rewatch everything again. A story about two boys lost is the deep depths of the society and life and a demon within their shadows just finding what they wanted, a place where they feel they should be, a place where they belong. A story of obsession. A curse obsession that have been passed down to those who was ruled by the obsessed rulers. A story about the hunt for creation or destruction. What a wonderful and at the same time a terrifying story of a contract with the devil but the devil is himself.
The BEST Gundam series. It also has the most awesome backstory I’ve ever dreamed of someday seeing.

Fun fact: Barbados is named after the 8th name listed on The Lesser Key of Solomon which holds 72 names (like the 72 Gundam frames) it describes when summoned, he appears “with four nobles kings & their companions in great troops” just like how Orga,Shino, Eugene, & Biscuit ran the show (with chad replacing biscuit) with their many companions… He gives knowledge of past & future events.

This honestly is the coolest Gundam I've seen. Did not expect to enjoy this show as much as I did. Mikazuki is a BEAST
funnily enough in the ending, the obsessions of Tekkadan and Mcgillis is kinda same but realized in an utterly different forms. I find it super ironic.
Tekkadan wanted to free Mars from Gallarhorn by becoming the king of Mars, essentially Tenka Fubu AKA unification of the world by force.
MacGillis wants to purge corruption from Gallarhorn by deleting the Seven Stars (excluding the Fareed Family) and guiding the rest by the sheer strength of Bael which is another form of Tenka Fubu.
These obsessions are for (arguably) noble goals but the methods is super reckless and utterly destructive, symbolized by Alaya Vijyana System (i prefer calling it "Arayashiki" tbh) and shown by Mika through "making deals with the devil".
Tekkadan's obsession is realized by Kudelia in a more democratic and peaceful manners, a welcome ending that Orga can never think of due to circumstances beyond his control.
MacGillis's obsession is even more ironically realized by his enemies and in a democratic manner that is achieved by the deaths of Iok Kujan (thank god) and MacGillis himself, essentially wiped the Seven Stars (except the Ellion family) and enabling the arguable transition from autocratic systems to a more democratic one. MacGillis's obsession too spring from circumstances beyond his control.

I've always thought Mika as the demon and Biscuit as the angel to Orga. One tells him to just do it and the other stop and think. Barbatos is just a tool, an extension of power, just like other White Demons that came before, as the series has always been about the will of humankind or something like that.

watching IBO reminded me really heavily of red dead redemption 2, strangely enough. this toxic relationship where a bunch of dissatisfied people followed the violent cult of personality of one self centered leader always gunning for more, and i suppose the differences between the two is that tekkadans voice of reason (biscuit) died far sooner that the van der linde gang's (arthur) did, and orga also fully, wholeheartedly believed in what he said and did, even if he only did it out of compulsion (fear?) for someone else

I always thought Mika is a sociopath. I love the way you understood his behavior and Obsession. It is a great insight and knowledge that Gundam series is not always about lame magic powers, unrealistic technology, and god-like idiot protagonist characters. Kids nowadays always say IBO is a badly written series but I beg to differ from their waltdisney thinking. I pretty sure, they haven't read or heard the story of the heroic tales of Achilles and even 300 spartans. Well, I can't blame those kids for not knowing literature and spend too much time with pokemon. Iron-Blooded Orphans is the best gundam series! great job with your analysis
Funnily enough 30 year old children are the ones who say that. Younger audiences seem to actually understand what the series is supposed to be. So much that globaly the barbatos is more liked than the freedom and maybe even exia.

I honestly thought the "PLACE" Mika was trying so hard to find and fight for was the battlefield. That's why he died in the battlefield. I never thought there was another meaning to that and then this video comes. This take is actually pretty good and made me rewatch everything again. Thanks for the great analysis of one of my most favorite gundam series ever.

Agreed, but to take what you said one more step. Is the act of finding that place, not an obsession? What you described is the narrative, but the underlying driving force behind everything you said was the obsession of getting "there".

@@BeeBait not really... the leaders were obsessed... and the followers followed the obsessed. So if we deduce down the narrative of this story (and many other stories ) we get obsession. You may get something else though but that’s the beauty of the internet aint it?
