DIY PALLET DECK for under $300!!!

  • Here’s a video of the 12x12 DIY pallet deck I built. It took a little over 2 days to build. The cost was under $300. It may not last forever, but I’m confident it’ll last at least 5 or more years. Before anyone starts commenting…YES, IM AWARE OSB DOESN’T LAST FOREVER AND IT WILL EVENTUALLY ROT….but for under $300 it’ll do it’s job long enough for my liking. We do plan to stain the deck but you have to wait 3-4 weeks before you apply stain to fresh fence panels. I realized I made an editing mistake at 14:57….it’s supposed to say “screw everything down”
    Referring the OSB boards I was cutting.
    Here is the breakdown of the costs:
    -12 pallets from FB marketplace $46.00
    - 6 sheets OSB from Lowe’s and 2 boxes of 2 inch decking screws $98.00 (w/ military discount)
    -74 fence pallets from Lowe’s $151.00 (w/ military discount)
    I already had some of the stuff I needed such as the pavers for foundation, the weed barrier, scrap wood for the cribbing, the saws and other tools needed for the job. Depending on what you have your end price could obviously differ. Thanks for watching, feel free to comment and ask questions! Don’t forget to like and subscribe!!

    What an awesome build! I am hoping to do this with students at school. Like you, I think, if we can get a short time out of it, it will be time well spent. My idea is to use breeze blocks under, lay pallets on top, then, to have pallet wood (taken apart) to use as the top - I will need to access a thickenesser, and then sand and paint. I think this will lower the costs significantly.

    The deck build looks amazing. The problem is the materials used. Not the pallets but the shims and the particle board base. If you are trying to cater a 1-time event, this is 100% OK. But if you want something to give you a few seasons, 3-4 this is not the way. But your temp project did turn out nice. 👍

      🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ONCE AGAIN…as I said in the description “BEFORE ANYONE STARTS COMMENTING--I AM AWARE THAT OSB DOESNT LAST FOREVER AND IT WILL EVENTUALLY ROT”!!!! The deck doesn’t get wet due to the canopy above it. It will last at least 3-5 years easily. For the price of $300….I would rebuild this deck from the ground up again in a few years before I drop thousands of dollars on the actual deck lumber to do it. According to deckbye3.com the average price of a 12 x12 deck can range in cost from $2200 to $13,000. I spent $300 and built it myself in 2 days. If you want a deck that will last forever go watch a different video. The point of this video was a DIY build on a budget. I appreciate your comment but read the description before you comment on exactly what I said not to comment on. Thanks.

    asking as a person with zero carpentry knowledge: what difference would it have made if you had skipped the OSB? I'd like to build a similar deck and if my plan is for it to last one-two seasons, do you think it's worth paying for the OSB? Also, how thick are the fence planks and what wood are they made from? Anyhow, thanks a lot for the inspiration!

    • @FireFightHandymanServices
      @FireFightHandymanServices  4 месяца назад +3

      Hello! Thanks for watching! I would think skipping the OSB would make it less sturdy and definitely shorten the lifespan of the deck. But for one to two seasons you should be okay. The OSB is around $14.00 a sheet. Worth paying for in my opinion. The fence planks are about 1 inch thick and made from various types of wood…typically cedar or pine.

    I'm thinking of doing something like this. I might use some Thompson's water sealer accompanied by a protective layer of flex seal over the sealer for the parts that touch the ground. Not trying to be a hater, I really like the deck, but have you experienced any rot yet? I'm hoping I could do something like this and make it last a couple years somehow. Is there anything you'd do differently?

    • @FireFightHandymanServices
      @FireFightHandymanServices  8 дней назад

      @@collinnadolsky3411 that doesn’t sound like a bad plan! As far as rot, so far so good. The only thing I had to do this year was screw down a few planks that were warped a little. There’s no rot at all….looking back now I should have put some roofing paper on top of the OSB underneath the fence planks just for extra waterproofing. If you add the waterproofing I think your deck will last longer than a few years. I expect to get 4-5 years out of this one. I’m going to do a nice waterproof stain on it soon.
