I'm a Mario fanboy, and even I'll admit S3&K is way better than a lot of the old Mario games. It's just that I'd pick up World over 3&K any day because of nostalgia.
*BUY/STREAM MY NEW ALBUM:* fanlink.to/MiddleOfSomewhere The intro theme of RTTTA, called "What If I'm Hurt Again", is on the album. Like the intro? Check the album.
Even tho I LOOOOVED Mania, it didn't surpass S3&K. I wish Mania had more bonus stages (just Blue Spheres? Come on...), and all stages were original. If Christian Whitehead and company will get a chance to make one more classic Sonic, it may surpass S3&K.
yeah, the huge amount of classic stages really hindered it from being the "true Sonic 4" to me. I think we all know the best thing about Mania is the (spoilers) & knuckles mode. That being said, I have yet to play mania (pc rip), so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is brilliant. I've got a bit more nostalgia for Sonic 1 but I'm not going to let it blind me. I'm *REALLY* hoping Christian Whitehead can Deliver with Sonic Mania. So far it's got everything I like about it. -Sonic CD based Sprite animations (I find CD sprites the best in the Classic games) -More explorative level design for the Special Stages from S3&K. -Elemental Shields including the Blue Ring. -Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. -Flying Battery Zone -The Elemental Shields will now have multi purpose uses for levels like the Fire Shield burning the Spike Log in Green Hill. -It will tell a story like S3&k Cut Scenes (It's also rumored that there will be CD like Cut Scenes) -Each act will have a boss with a transition in between stages. Whitehead knows what he's doing with this game.
The only stain on Mania is that it is reusing Zones from past games. Whether or not the layouts are different, I and many others would have preferred if all of the Zones were original.
Yeah, and I can understand that. When I saw 'reimagined classics' in the trailer it definitely was the low point of it. I think they're making Act 1 look identical to the Genesis and Act 2 will have a more fresh look to it like Green Hill Act 2, Taxman said Green Hill was the tamest with it too. I just hope they're not going to put in levels that we had in Generations.
This is why I love RTTTA. You manage to make a 22 minute video covering 3 games, while keeping people entertained all the way through. The jokes are dumb but they are still funny. And unlike a lot of other RUclipsrs, you don't just make a list and call it a day. and sonic is cool i guess
This was a really great look back at my favorite 2D platforming series of all time (the classic Sonic trilogy and CD are always so satisfying to play imo) but by far my favorite part is the high amount of respect this video showed the Sonic OST, ESPECIALLY 3 and Knuckles OST. Indeed it kicked the butt of both Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country. If there is one thing I am glad that Sonic has continued to nail over the years it’s the soundtracks. Thank goodness Sonic’s music continues to be some of the greatest music in gaming history.
Ermon Stanback Heck yeah! Sonic 2 isn't as loved by the fan base as it used to be, but that doesn't matter to me. It's still the most fun, in my opinion, and has an amazing soundtrack. I think media has a huge influence on many people's opinions.
+Gunman 1357 I never said that nor did I *not* say that. I told someone else but I had made a point in the original edit to note that this video is based on comparing what are *widely considered* the best Sonic games. This, along with other important notes, caused the video to be 30 minutes long. I ended up cutting all of it so the video was a bit *less* long despite still being very long, as you can see hahaha. Lesson learned for me: Never make a video talking about three games hahahaha
Then why not call it what is the best original sonic game. Plus i'm sure most people believe the sonic adventure games, colors and generations are widely considered among the best sonic games. Though I do understand you plight, scripting is hard and editing is even harder.
You would be wrong there, actually. Sonic Adventure's aren't really considered that great anymore as they've aged extremely poorly (though I still really enjoy them and so do many many other people) and Colors and Generations are games people thoroughly enjoy (including myself with Generations) but if you really look, most people say Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best Sonic ever made and many others will argue Sonic 2 and on occasion, Sonic 1. Doesn't mean you have to agree, but that's the general consensus. Editing is a pain, yeah. :P Hurts trying to cut stuff when you're like "I really wanna keep that in". But yeah since these are just kinda generally considered the "greatest", adding in "original" or "old" is adding too much detail to the title that is most likely unneeded.
Garrett Williamson I wasn't saying they were they best game, I probably agree that sonic 3 and knuckles is the best sonic game, but my problem is that you didn't talk about colors and generations in a video called which sonic game is the best, but you included sonic 1.
It would be out of place to include Sonic Colors or Sonic Generations in here anyway; that would be for another video regarding the best 3D Sonic game. Overall the 3D Sonic's are not considered by the majority the "best", though if a 3D Sonic title is someone's favorite, like Sonic Generations or something, he's not wrong; it's his opinion. I'm basically just taking what are factually considered the best Sonic games (Sonic 1, 2, and 3 & Knuckles) and giving my opinion on which I think is best. I don't mean "factually" in the sense that "these must be the best games and no one can say differently" but that they are legitimately on the list of the best games of all time which would, of course, also make these the best Sonic games of all time in that regard.
I’ve unironically enjoyed Shadow the Hedgehog since I was younger, and I never turned into a unicorn or horse or whatever the purposely incoherent plot from start of the video said.
Some people didn't. Sometimes when I am stuck somewhere in a game I randomly mash buttons to see what happens, and I happened to have better luck with the barrel than many others.
Ok, can we stop comparing SNES and Genesis sound ships? They were so vastly different and meant for vastly different forms of music that comparing them never made sense. SNES had a sampling chip that could sample a high varity of notes and sounds. Anyone who knew what they were doing could make master pieces. Donkey Kong Country 2 and Final Fantasy III (VI) are great examples of this, along with Yoshi's Island. However, this can also lead to developers making bland music, which at times can be worse than bad. On the other hand, the Genesis used an 8-bit synth chip that took advantage of synth sounds and could have a keyboard used on it. This means that anyone good at making music could pull things off that didn't seem possible on it, while people who were really bad, got screaming cats. It's also harder to emulate, which is why a bunch of rip-off machines you find can't seem to get any of the sound right. The two systems can't be compared sound wise. They were too different. Both could get really high quality sounds, and both could get bad sounds.
Here's why I compared (and I'll basically be repeating a few things you already stated but it's worth mentioning anyway): 1) The Genesis soundchip was an FM soundchip. In other words, it was purely a synthesizer. It could not sample anything and therefore any sounds used to mimic a real instrument was a massively impressive feat. 2) The Genesis soundchip only allowed for 10 channels or less whereas SNES's soundchip could do at least 16 channels. This meant the SNES had more tracks/notes to work with which is great. However, anyone that managed to make a soundtrack on the Genesis sound like a freaking legit DJ party (aka Streets of Rage), that still manages to impress me 20x over anything the SNES could do because of the absolutely insane limitations composers had with the Genesis. 3) They have drastically different sounds. Yes. This is where personal opinion comes in. Comparing the inherent SOUNDS they produced objectively is unrealistic, however that doesn't mean we can't have an opinion. While the SNES has fantastic soundtracks (and I mean don't get me wrong I love Super Mario World's music and DKC and I LOOOOOVE FFVI's soundtrack), any time the Genesis was composed and produced by someone who knew what they were doing, the punch and funky sound that came out of the Genesis is something I will take any day over SNES's softer sounds. Coincidental or not, the Genesis soundchip really complimented the attitude of the company and their mascot. Finally) Sonic 3&K's soundtrack is just amazing. That's kinda subjective but on the other hand, it really truly is simply an amazing soundtrack and a stunning feat in video game music history. The reason I did the comparing was to show that despite DKC (and games like FFVI which no I did not compare though I should have) taking great advantage of the soundchip and pulling off stuff on the system people didn't think was possible, what Sonic 3&K (and just to add it in there, Streets of Rage series) did with the Genesis soundchip to me far surpasses the most top-notch productions of the SNES stuff. Especially with 3&K, it was both extremely well composed and extremely well produced and programmed. It just sounds incredible; it's one of the only soundtracks of the entire 16-bit era that sounded like *real* music, despite being a ton of FM synths. I think that really was a matter of the performance and production that gave it that flare. Anyway, I get your point, I really do. That's just basically my super long reasoning for why I compared them in such a ridiculous fashion there hahaha. I want it to be clear I absolutely adore SNES soundtracks. FFVI? Super Mario World? I mean Nobuo and Koji are musical gods. Their compositions are some of the most catchy (and just really brilliant) of any video game composer in history. They're like... my favorites. So it's not that I have anything against the SNES stuff, I just feel like of the 16-bit era, Sonic 3&K single-handedly beat every other soundtrack (maybe even Streets of Rage simply because I think 3&K was far better composed) in terms of grabbing a fantastic sonic sound (see what I did there) and incredible production and performance with the insane limitations they had. But yes, there's definitely a lot of subjectivity in there hahaha I appreciate your comment! I like when people bring in their ideas on this type of stuff. Not a fan of the comments that go "cool" lol!
Honestly, I agree with this. Just coming from a NeoGaf thread where they argued so much about which one was better, while a the explaining why neither was really better than the other, and that it all comes down to personal opinion. It got to the point where they were posting SNES version of Genesis music and vice versa. I guess it got to me.
honestly sonic 3 & knuckles because 1 it has a good storyline 2 you have more character choice 3 it actually has debug and level select in it and 4 it has awesome levels and soundtrack
Nicholas Rivera Sonic 2 only lacks story of the aspects you listed. And also, who cares about story in games like these? They don't make or break the game.
Paper Luigi S2M Sonic 2 is overrated, Sonic 3 and Knuckles is better because HYPER SONIC AND KNUCKLES, and SUPER TAILS AND HIS FLICKY ARMY OF DEATH!!!!!!!!!!
Sure there are! If you're looking for people who love getting deeper into stuff and analyzing games and such, there are plenty. Satchbag Goods is one, TheGoodBlood is great, Mark Brown is fantastic. There are even simpler guys who just do straightforward reviews (with some comedy in there but not like JonTron or PBG-heavy) like Somecallmejohnny. Yungtown is very much a comedian but his way of going about it is not nearly as "insane" as say someone like me or Dunkey or JonTron. If you go looking, you'll certainly find some less "insane" reviewers that are really great. Hope this helps! :)
6:40 - You don't have to wait for the small moving block in that part of Marble Zone, because you can run and jump from each platform and you'll have enough momentum to jump to the higher part.
Even though hydrocity is not a first stage, SMW has reused music through out the levels, and isn't it clear fan or not ANGEL ISLAND IS THE FIRST FREAKIN ZONE IN SONIC 3 AND KNUCKLES!?!?! (Okay I'm sorry for posting this comment. )
Awesome video dude. Love it. It's so funny - I grew up in a small town, I felt like I was the only one around that enjoyed this series so much. RUclips is great for discovering that you're never alone - these games were life-changing for me, and nothing else compared in that era.
MY OPINION 1st: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 2nd: Sonic The Hedgehog 3rd: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 SONIC 1 CONS 1. Labyrinth Zone is too hard 2. It's a really short game with only 18 acts and 6 zones 3. Sometimes there are just random bottomless pits 4. Bosses are boring drowning music SONIC 2 CONS 1. Metropolis Zone is way too hard 2. The only reason why I play the game is because you can play as Knuckles 3. Why do you start the final boss with no rings 4. It's boring like most sequels I play 5. Stages are lame, except for Chemical Plant 6. Wing Fortress Zone 7. The final boss is way too hard especially with no rings 8. Competition mode is boring SONIC 3 CONS 1. The barrel 2. For me, the zones are too hard The Winner Is: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 The winner is Sonic 3 and Knuckles because there are more characters, save points, better game play, better zones, KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA, and many other reasons! Like if you agree that Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the best!
Fun Fact: Apparently Metropolis Zone Act 3 was supposed to be a one act level called “Genocide/Cyber City Zone”. It was eventually cut, but since they thought it would be waste to scrap the completed level design, it became Metropolis Zone Act 3
Sonic 2 is my favorite Sonic game. Let's see how long it takes for the 3k fanboys to "correct" me. It's fast, fun, and has a good balance of Speed, Platforming, and Exploration. I also think it has the best soundtrack between the Genesis games.
As a kid I was stuck on that FUCKING red thing in Sonic 3 for like a year. One day an older family friend figured it out by chance. Then I could finally beat the game...
Bobofett72 /FnafFan9001 I am sorry I posted that comment as a joke I looked at the release date before the video loaded and sorry if you got annoyed by my joke and the reason I took so long to reply but I haven't had internet
Sonic CD is the greatest sonic game ever made!! Traveling through time! The music was far superior to any of the megadrive sonic games.... don't get me wrong I love them all but imo sonic cd is the best
Mario is always gonna be better. I have a Top Five. 5. Super Mario Galaxy 4. Super Mario 3D World 3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 2. Super Mario Maker 1. Super Mario 64 DS. (My #1 seems weird but you just look at my IL runs at speedrun.com. It's stuffed with SM64DS.

All the good stuff of the Classic games mashed into one that took steroids.

Streets of Rage had the best ost for any 16 bit hame for me.
s3&k is my fav, one of my favorite games in general
This is still the best Sonic game review even after 6 years
The bullshit that is Labyrinth Zone makes Star Light much more fun, I wonder if SEGA did that on purpose
this is like Jon from and avgn meets game theory ITS FUCKING AMAZING
9:07 I can't escape this XD
Non of us can....
Luke Oliver no one will
Those were the best 22 Minutes of my Life
In my opinion sonic 2 and Sonic 3 and knuckles are the definitive sonic game experience.
The amount of times I've come back to rewatch this video is impressive, I'm not even into Sonic games that much
Guess what I have in Sonic Games...
*METROPOLIS ZONE*
honestly sonic 3 & knuckles because 1 it has a good storyline 2 you have more character choice 3 it actually has debug and level select in it and 4 it has awesome levels and soundtrack
Nicholas Rivera Mr.NEXUS Actually you can play as sonic and/or tails or knuckles in sonic 2.
Dasir Williams i know its sonic 2 delta
Nicholas Rivera No, you lock on s2 to sanik and chuckle and bam chuckles is playable
Great Video Garrett, 11/10 IGN
+Bubblecube8 7.8/10 "Too much awesome" -IGN
i love these videos because its something i could watch every couple of months and still enjoy garrett's content
This is one of my favourite videos on RUclips, possibly the best review I’ve ever heard in my life.
lol chaos control = me dead . haha
It's a bit hard for me 2 chose?, which one because i like them all?, the sonic hack's are great.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Easily.
Still enjoying this video
THIS IS THE BEST RTTTA VIDEO EVER!!!
"They added three acts cuz SCREW THE PLAYERS!!!!!!!!"
You need to fix this garret mania is confirmed to be the sequel to S3&K and needs to be reviewed as well
Dood ! I haven't laughed in a while. Thanks !!
The guy ranting about Titanic always gets me
This was the first RTTTA I ever watched. A lot of memories here
Is there a reviewer that ISN'T insane in regards to script-writing and video editing like Jontron?
Garrett Williamson can you tell me what software you used for the 80s like VHS graphics I need to know
Let’s just all come to agree that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is the best
JPhoenix_ 10 why
Please leave the Bahamas alone
Yes
No... just no
Yes. Everyone who says no is a dum
I don’t know how many times I have watched this video. I just love the way it was made. It’s just...beautiful! 😆
6:40 - You don't have to wait for the small moving block in that part of Marble Zone, because you can run and jump from each platform and you'll have enough momentum to jump to the higher part.
it hurts me how underrated this video is
19:24 This is an unfair competition. You used the first level in DKC and SMW.
Nandin Lopez that was also the first level in sonic 3
what, you want him to put the boring ass castle theme from smw instead? he used the most iconic songs from the 2 games and i respect that.
Nandin Lopez yeah donkey kong country has a level with freaking to much colours
Even though hydrocity is not a first stage, SMW has reused music through out the levels, and isn't it clear fan or not ANGEL ISLAND IS THE FIRST FREAKIN ZONE IN SONIC 3 AND KNUCKLES!?!?! (Okay I'm sorry for posting this comment. )
It's technically the first level
"We need to stop the Obamas from becoming a bunch of furries."
YES SAVE THEM BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE
Garrett: "The greatest 2D platformer"
Then sonic mania came out.
3’s still better in my opinion
3&k > mania
Awesome video dude. Love it. It's so funny - I grew up in a small town, I felt like I was the only one around that enjoyed this series so much. RUclips is great for discovering that you're never alone - these games were life-changing for me, and nothing else compared in that era.
Absolutely love this video.
MY OPINION
1st: Sonic The Hedgehog 3
2nd: Sonic The Hedgehog
3rd: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
SONIC 1 CONS
1. Labyrinth Zone is too hard
2. It's a really short game with only 18 acts and 6 zones
3. Sometimes there are just random bottomless pits
4. Bosses are boring
drowning music
SONIC 2 CONS
1. Metropolis Zone is way too hard
2. The only reason why I play the game is because you can play as Knuckles
3. Why do you start the final boss with no rings
4. It's boring like most sequels I play
5. Stages are lame, except for Chemical Plant
6. Wing Fortress Zone
7. The final boss is way too hard especially with no rings
8. Competition mode is boring
SONIC 3 CONS
1. The barrel
2. For me, the zones are too hard
The Winner Is: Sonic The Hedgehog 3
The winner is Sonic 3 and Knuckles because there are more characters, save points, better game play, better zones, KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA, and many other reasons! Like if you agree that Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the best!
No that's not the best sonic 3 COMPLETE is the best
Ichbin27 but it’s a rom hack version.
@@말-c2c Nah it's *Completely* Equal to Sonic 3 Complete.
the classics are great but so are the 3d ones
the words "metropolis zone metroplois zone metropolois zone" popped into my head and i had to dig up this vieo again
Fun Fact: Apparently Metropolis Zone Act 3 was supposed to be a one act level called “Genocide/Cyber City Zone”. It was eventually cut, but since they thought it would be waste to scrap the completed level design, it became Metropolis Zone Act 3
What about Sammy the sonic classic fan
AND KNUCKLES
Super Mario Bros wasn't designed to have a hip soundtrack
Surprised he didn't bring up Mega Man X.
By far one of the best comparison's I've seen on these 3 games.
holy crap this video is 3 years old today well um happy birthday to one of my favorite RTTTA episodes
Garret you forgot the best Sonic game of them all. Luigi's Mansion!
And Bubsy 3D
Flame in the dark Are you saying Luigi's Mansion is a bad game?
No just making a joke. Luigi's Mansion is awesome!
That not a Sonic game!
I have a Sonic 3, I have a Sonic & Knuckles, UHHHHHHHH, Sonic 3 & Knuckles!
TH3_RanMan // Jet Good one.
Sonic 3 is a ripoff of Sonic 2 which is a ripoff of Sonic 1.
Which is a ripoff of Sonic and Knuckles
"Video games are a ripoff of real life."
_- Everyone's grandma_
+CrazyHatGaming Say that to Sonic Dash.
Nope
And knuckles
I can’t stop myself from watching this over and over again
This video just turned 2 years old today, and it’s still a great video.
Sonic 2 is my favorite Sonic game. Let's see how long it takes for the 3k fanboys to "correct" me.
It's fast, fun, and has a good balance of Speed, Platforming, and Exploration. I also think it has the best soundtrack between the Genesis games.
Paper Luigi mine is sonic 3 and Knuckles
Gregoryderpwrld 1 Cool!
Paper Luigi ok
Gregoryderpwrld 1
It only annoys me when people try to correct me. I have no problem with 3k being your favorite, it's an amazing game.
Paper Luigi ikr
Why do we say all modern sonic are bad
Hero's adventure 1 and 2 generations colors forces and the advance trilogy
I loved sonic cd
Remember that sonic runs at the speed of sound. This explains why the stages are so different as Sonic is traveling very fast.
As a kid I was stuck on that FUCKING red thing in Sonic 3 for like a year. One day an older family friend figured it out by chance. Then I could finally beat the game...
IMHO Sonic 2 is the best Sonic game of all time.
I agree . Only people born between 1995-now would disagree. Sonic 2 wins in a landslide
I HATE METROPOLIS ANDLABYRINTH
Suitroot7451 i hate sandopolis
NomadSpeed that dam grasshopper
cmon metropolis is fine, oil ocean and labyrinth suck tho
sonic mania is the best sonic game
Bobofett72 /FnafFan9001 I am sorry I posted that comment as a joke I looked at the release date before the video loaded and sorry if you got annoyed by my joke and the reason I took so long to reply but I haven't had internet
That's right!
Honestly, I forgot about this guy. Videos are even better now!
Sonic 1- The Stages are strange
Sonic 2- Metropolis Zone Sucks!
Sonic 3- The Barrel is so Hard
Sonic CD is the greatest sonic game ever made!! Traveling through time! The music was far superior to any of the megadrive sonic games.... don't get me wrong I love them all but imo sonic cd is the best
Jim Loughlin. sonic 3and knuckles
Sonic 2 is the best
Ermon Stanback agreed
HOW?
ehh, mario is better
yaBOI sinouh nope
Mario is always gonna be better. I have a Top Five.
5. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Super Mario 3D World
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. Super Mario Maker
1. Super Mario 64 DS. (My #1 seems weird but you just look at my IL runs at speedrun.com. It's stuffed with SM64DS.
Mario is not better you dumb Mario ass fans
Thehyperspinosaurus Predator x hahahaha, omg.....you're probably not over ten years old.
Galaxy is way better than Galaxy 2
Have you seen the recently dumped sonic 3 prototype garrett?
It shows a lot of major differences particularly with the soundtrack.
I did actually! Very exciting stuff, I was incredibly intrigued. This opens up a whole new can of worms in terms of the development timeline. Super interesting stuff.
Sonic 2 - Special Stages
Sonic 3 and K - Levels and Gameplay
Sonic 1 - Nostalgia?
Nah it's like this:
Sonic 1 - Nostalgia and Challenging
Sonic 2 - New Mechanics and Gameplay
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Graphics and Special Stages
to be honest nostalgia hunters are toxic
@@Hugo-os3ud Sonic 1 is ass compared to the other 2
