  • Today, we're starting a COMPLETE Garmin install and panel upgrade on my Bonanza! We'll fly the Bonanza from Camarillo to San Diego to start the install at Neal Aviation (www.nealaviation.com) and take a look into the avionics install process. Big thank you to Garmin, Neal Aviation, Whelen, Mid-Continent, and CiES for sponsoring this video!
    This upgrade will add a lot of capability to the airplane, including a WAAS IFR GPS, full engine monitoring, and an autopilot, all while maintaining the vintage feel of the original Bonanza panel. I can't wait to share the final product with you all - thanks for watching!
    All the equipment going into the panel:
    GNC 355 WAAS GPS/Com
    GNC 255 Nav/Com
    GMA 345 Audio Panel
    GTX 345 Transponder
    GI 275 AI, HSI, EIS
    GFC 500 Autopilot
    CiES Digital Fuel Senders
    Whelen Orion 650 & 500 Position/Strobe Lights
    Whelen G3 Landing & Taxi Lights
    Whelen Orion 360 Beacon
    Mid-Continent CHRONOS Clock

    As a student pilot in SoCal I want to say that your videos have been truly helpful to me, espsecially with your meticulous radio and checklist procedures, and high level of professionalism. You set a good example for the younger generation of future pilots, of how aviation can be awesome and safe at the same time. Glad to see you posting again

      And it is such an important thing to do. By calling everything out, you are so much more conscious of what you are doing at that moment and you also give yourself the time to properly do the task and not just read the list and go in your mind "yeah, I'm sure I flipped that switch"

    • @Chr15T
      @Chr15T Год назад +1

      I would do the same when making a movie of my flying. Other than that, I work with a panel-mounted checklist that is reduced to the "survival items". I.e., a "check"list not a "do"list. E.g., I don't use a checklist to start the engine.

    The fact that you've flown your airplane manually exclusively, will give you a better appreciation and use of your new autopilot. A lot of pilots depend too much on the use of the AP before they've really have gotten enough "Stick Time" and hand off the aircraft to the AP very early on on most of their flights. I think that makes them less proficient and able to predict and handle a myriad of situations they can find themselves in.
    You on the other hand are, IMO, an excellent pilot. You will benefit from the AP and will appreciate and use it better then a lot of other pilots. I'm very excited to hear you wanting to go IFR again. As you know, it will open up flying to you in so many other ways that make it safer and more flexible then just with VFR.
    Thank you as always for taking us along with you. I so very much appreciate it Stevie!

    Absolutely love that you’re maintaining the vintage look and feel.. so many people put giant MFD and PFD’s in those beautiful old airplanes and it just looks out of place..
    it looks like they took great care with running and bundling the wires!
    I helped a friend redo the panel in his RV-8, and wow! I wish we had the ability to scan and recreate the panel digitally like that back then!

    • @bayflight
      @bayflight  Год назад +5

      Thank you, Alex! Putting a giant screen in the panel would be like putting a Tesla screen in a vintage car, just wouldn't feel right. Definitely a no-brainer to put the GI 275s in since they maintain the vintage feel while providing the same capability as a larger PFD.
      The 3D scan was definitely a nice touch! Can't wait to show the finished product - the attention to detail on the install is incredible

    You owe it to yourself to fly into Half Moon Bay Airport and visit our coastal paradise. The airport is about 4 miles North of the town. Lots of restaurants in the area, shopping and plenty to see and do. The famous surfing site, Mavericks is a stone's throw from the airport. We used to have something called "Dream Machines" once a year. Planes of all types including warbirds, show cars and anything with a motor were on display but I'm honestly not sure if we still have the event since Covid. This time of year the weather is almost always spectacular. The flight from San Carlos Airport to the coast can't be more than 20 minutes. If you have any questions, be glad to help.

    Regarding your new autopilot, during my instrument training (in a Bonanza) my instrument instructor (who, as a corporate pilot, flew single-pilot IFR) told me to "make liberal use of the autopilot" for IFR flying. It frees your brain and hands for the multiple things you must keep track of and do beside just flying the plane.

    Happy for you seeing you excited about your Bonanza's upgrade. I have seen other pilots getting work done on there planes. Its a different type of video but find it quite interesting seeing the complexity of the planes. Looking forwards to your video when its all done.

    Because I'm considered vintage as well I always appreciate young people like you who like the old school style. Also always enjoy your videos.
