MLB, NHL and NBA have on field/ice/court officials in their respective Halls of Fame. The NFL put it's first on-field official in Canton this year, Art McNally.
I appreciate that Ed Hochuli actually explained the entire course of events during complex foul plays. He left no room for wondering why everything went down the way it did, and he explained it in terms the average football fan could understand. You love to see it. Hard to believe there's a lawyer out there who can actually make you understand rules instead of make them confuse you even more.
I know you think that sounds clever and funny but it's precisely BECAUSE he's a lawyer that he CAN explain things like that to an audience. But hey you got your Like farm.
@johnroscoe2406 I think you're right that makes him ABLE to but his point is that many lawyers choose to wield their ability to do so not to help explain things clearly to people but as a tool to obfuscate the truth and simply further their own interests, all while feeling superior.
@@bridgethings4225 This. I've met plenty of lawyers, and yes, all of them are able to explain things in such a way that they make sense, many of them just don't. But sometimes they forget that they're not trying to convince a jury, and more importantly that there's no information here that needs to be hidden or mitigated.
He was actually embarassed to be calling back a penalty flag, but he dropped his vocal inflection on "overpowered" and made it sound like he was slightly sad and embarrassed on the defender's behalf instead. hahaha "It was not a HOLD...the defender was just overpowered..." **sadface**
Actually there are quite a few instances where the call was "the entire offensive line" or "everyone but the center" because the center failed to snap the ball on the correct count. And not just by Ed Hochuli.
One of the all time greats. He explained complicated calls so well he cleared up all confusion, he had an incredible track record with very few bad calls, dude is ripped well into his 60s, and he always felt bad and took accountability and the blame for blown calls. There will never be another legend like him. Still sad that he retired.
ome of the few refs id get excited for. these guys in the nba and these days like scott foster seem to think we watch the game for them. i actuslly have watched a few games for ed
Ed would be perfect for todays game. Ed makes a ruling on the field and then the announcers can be like “now here’s rules expert, Ed” and he just starts explaining the ruling over the stadium mic
That’s what CBS does with another great retired ref. Gene Steratore. He’s their rules analyst. He can explain decently. But I’d love to see Ed with Fox or something. Ed can just explain everything perfectly.
I'd be like a deer in the headlights if I had to explain detailed rulings to crowds of 60,000 passionate fans, half of whom will want to kill me afterwards.
I just love how when the entirety of Gillette Stadium breaks out in jeers at the call not being overturned, Ed just raises his hands up as if to say "quiet down, there's more" 🤣
I worked with Ed in Phoenix when he was practicing law (at Jones, Skelton & Hochuli) and into his first couple of years of ref'ing. He is a very good man. He does deserve to be in Canton!! Another atty friend of mine told me if he and Ed were flying to or driving to a deposition or hearing, that he was reading up on the case and Ed was reading the football rule book! I was happy to see his son is walking in his foot steps! Think of you often Ed!
His son is having a semi-rough start officiating, however, even though he will never be what Ed was to the NFL, he absolutely has the best mentor an official can have. I can't wait to see him reach his full potential officiating.
Player: Oops, sorry man, I didn't mean to put my arm there. Ed: It's ok, man, shit happens. But be careful, you CAN get ejected for that, you know. Player: Thank you, sir. Now are there penalties in the pro bowl? Ed: I don't know, are there? I have an idea, I'll humorously remind everyone that there are when one occurs! That surely will cheer everyone up there!
Loved the guy, always felt teams and players were getting a fair game with him on the field. I love that "roughing the facemask" at the end of this video though, that's a hoot!
I remember when the Raiders played the Chargers in San Diego on TNF; basically another home game for the Raiders... The Raiders lined up for a punt and then faked it. A Charger defender threw one of the Raiders ends out of the way before he could catch Lechler's pass and no call was made save for incomplete pass and a turnover on downs. The crowd was mad as they wanted PI called. Hochuli turns in his mic and explained that the Raiders were in punt formation. By rule when a team is in punt formation PI cannot be called. The crowd settled down. Proactivity and communication are always valuable tools. He understands this. I wish more people did...
When I went to Ravens vs Raiders in Baltimore in 2016 I had the pleasure of meeting this ref and he was so down to earth nicest ref I’ve ever met. Then after I had my picture taken with him he noticed my twin brother and told me get your brother in here we’re getting another picture in.

This dude was one ref players didn’t mess with it. This guy was in his sixties with a serious physique and a tough demeanor to match. In all seriousness, though, people said he was actually a really cool guy outside of the contest.
A perfect example of a great ref! He understands the game well and even offers explanations as to what happened and the result of it. He is one of a kind that’s for sure!
Ed is the man. Was there ever a serious controversy when an Ed Hochuli crew was officiating? I don't remember any. When Ed was there I always had the feeling the game was going to get called right.
I enjoy how he actually explains the errors instead of sweeping it under the rug like other refs he’s an honest guy
He is a lawyer after all
Baseball needs this.
Basketball too.
Go Steelers!
He has serious guns.
No player or coach ever questioned Ed’s calls because (a) he explained them in detail, and (b) he could tear your head off with those loaded guns.
2:33 I think all of these people disagreed, but his response was a perfect display of his badassery 😂
He seems like an American version of Pierluigi Collina. Nobody questioned his authority or tried to step over him
