I am a weird right handed guy whose normal batting and swing direction is left. When I picked up golf last year, I decided to learn right handed, because my thought was it would be easier access to clubs, and it was a new enough motion that I may as well learn right. Did that for several months, then someone gave me a left handed set they were getting rid of. Holy cow, I increased my distance 20-30 yards in each club, and consistency is so much better! But I have thought many times about challenging people to off hand golfing, because I worked at it enough that I could definitely hold my own, haha
@@scottnufer3632 I am a natural lefty who was forced as a child to do everything as a righty. I can putt left-handed every bit as well as right-handed, but am not an avid golfer, so I have never tried to drive lefty. Baseball, I hit right-handed, but can throw either way (better right). Anyway, all through my childhood, I could never throw a frisbee accurately. One time, without thinking about it, I picked one up and threw it lefty--perfectly. I ended up being a very strong ultimate frisbee and disc golfer left-handed.
The story behind the 14 club rule is interesting. Basically there was no limit and pros started showing up to tournaments with more and more clubs. Eventually golf’s governing bodies saw it was getting out of hand and said, “How many clubs did the last Masters winner have? 28, OK, half that then”.
Fred Couples did something unique when he won all those Skins at the tournament they used to play at a par 3 only course. Most players would just bring their standard golf bag and end up not using any of their woods or long irons. Fred had a set made of 14 irons only so he had all distances dialed in lol.
Jokes on you, I found a 12 wood, a 13 Wood, and a 13+ Wood. Oddly enough, one of the 13s is wood length and the other is iron length. Really throws me off (both are about my 7 iron).
Love it Rick! Couldn't help but start laughing when you were explaining how you'd blended sets, bent clubs , and even brought a lefty! I could tell how excited you were to try it out. A video like this is such a fun little experiment.
Thanks Rick for the insiparation, i'm a beginner from France and decided to create my own youtube channel to seek the help from other golfer thanks to you. Keep up the goof work ! (sorry if my english is not very good)
One of the most entertaining videos so far. Every time I watch one of your videos I want to go and play a round of golf. Thanks for all the amazing content. I started playing around 2 years ago and last year I started watching your videos. My score dropped with 12 shots in the first 2 and a half months this year. Thanks for the great tips.
I love watching you play at the Marriot, I played there a good few times as a junior in the match play league, Singles and 5 man competitions. Not played golf in over three years due to getting cancer when I was 24. The Marriot will be a course I definitely want play again when I can get back to it. What a fun half round of golf and interesting choices of clubs! As I'm a duffer, my lag putting is embarrassing so a chipper might not help me although it came in really handy for you. I would duplicate filling in the gaps in the wedges. I might also double up on a couple for both high and low bounce even though bounce selection didn't come into your round. And I might also have some duplicate woods with deeper faces for the tee box and shallower for the fairway which I'm sure wouldn't be of any help to you. Loved the left-handed 7-iron idea. I've had to hit left handed before turning a right-handed iron toe down just to chip the ball away from a tree and into the fairway without being able to get the ball to up and down range. An 7-iron head on a 3-iron shaft would be nifty for a deep lie that's further than a 7-iron from the green.
It was over 60 in Indiana yesterday. Windy as heck but I wad able to play one of the hardest courses in the Midwest called Purgatory. That course took my lunch money and stole my girlfriend at the same time. Lol. I was happy to be playing though.

Was recently gifted a set with an R11 driver, M6 3 wood, R11 5 wood, 3 and 4 Adams Idea hybrids, 5-PW Adams XTD A Tour irons, 56 & 60 Callaway X Forged wedges and a Tour Edge Bazooka Pro 6 putter. I bought a TaylorMade bag online and will be hiting the course that is within walking distance of my new house next week! Thanks for the content, Rick! It has helped immensely in preparation to pick up the game I love so much again!
On my high school golf team our season ending team gig was to go to a short par 3 course and do a little team tourney. Pitching wedge and a putter, winner gets $500 towards new clubs. Literally the most fun part of the season
Great to see a cameo from the Square Strike. I do keep one in the bag full time even as a single-digit handicap. I wind up having a lot of chip&runs and that club just takes all the thought out of it.
Yeah, we always want to have more clubs when playing, that is if you dont know how to hit or improvise special shots with each club. Also, I find on the course I play all the time, I know what clubs really needed to play each hole. One time i went around with 5-6 clubs and could shoot fairly good scores with them. Too many clubs can make you think too much and may not shoot any better than if you just had the 14 clubs. I say learn each of your 14 clubs, hit different type shots with them not just the full shots, and you will be surprised how your scores may improve. Seve Ballesteros when he was younger was given and played with only a 5 iron and could do just about any kind of shot you could think of with it. So it can be done with some practice. Another thing with all the clubs you have with you, sure you select the particular club for the yardage needed, but it comes down to how well you hit that shot.
I feel there were a few valuable lessons for a new golfer, such as myself. 1: Develop a confidence level with a golf club set - this is mainly aimed at the effort port forth putting. It would appear you did much better putting with your usual putter v. one not normally used. 2: Having many choices may connote many opportunities, but isn't always the case - it seemed having all of these clubs just provided fuel to have some internal conflict of which club would be better and in turn negatively affected good opportunities. Great video as always, I appreciate the content.
A brilliant upload! I see you’re using your patented Rick Shiels - Backspin/Corkscrew 2 in 1 technique! (7:24). Some of those shots landed and stuck to the green so hard, it looked like they’d been smacked down with a hammer! Keep doing what you do!
Funny enough you talk about the chipper I found one when sorting my bag out the other day but never used it. Looks like I might give it a go now haha. Great vid mate! Enjoyed that.
I’ve been playing golf over a month using all your videos, on my first hole I played I shot like 120. Now I’m down to a 86 with no coaching, it’s bad but I’m proud of it!
Love this video for 2 reasons. One, shows that loft doesn't always dictate distance. And two, it shows how talented pros are being able to flight and control 14 clubs for any scenario
What can I say that already hasn't been said, inspiring entertaining and humble. Humble because you missed the last putt to make us hacks feel better. Guess what it worked. Glad I subscribed. All the best Pete

The one bad thing about adding clubs is now you have that many more options to get you to second guess your shot. At least that's the trouble is Disc Golf. Limit my disc molds (clubs) in order to limit my second guessing. I only have 4 different molds in my DG bag but with slightly different flights for different holes or lines I need to hit. I've thrown these discs for over 4+years and I know what they do in what winds. And my bag has only like 16 discs in it. Now add 16 more discs to my bag and now I have to think of want to do instead what I know I can do. Just my 2 cents. Plus again I dont play ball golf. But still addicted to this channel. Good on ya mate and cheers.
A couple friends and I played a round with 4 clubs in honor of someone no longer with us who used to play with us with only a few irons and putter and always beat us. We had the best round and all scored really well. There was only one hole where I needed a club I didn't have. All other holes we all managed to get creative! If anyone hasn't tried it, you really should! I had a 3 rescue, 7 iron, pitching wedge and putter.
Brilliant Rick... I'll be completely honest when I first came across your channel 3 or 4 moths ago I was not that keen but the stuff you've been doing lately is great. It's fun, it has interest for us 'not so great' golfers. You're doing a great job. Thank you!
Brilliant video Rick, I have a left handed 7 iron in my bag, I actually play right handed with a left handed grip, so it feels natural to me an it’s saved me so many tines...to the delight of my pals!ha!
Interesting video, I just went through a bit of a purge of gear and tried to streamline my bag to carry clubs that I actually use. There are some clubs in my bag I know I would only use for one shot a round. Got rid of my 3/4/5 irons and 3/5 woods and only carrying 3/5 hybrids now and ordered the 17* super hybrid from Callaway to replace 3 wood. Looking at adding a few wedges , never been a wedge guy but struggle with my short game so feel its time to address it..
Just on a steady binge watching all your videos. Just said to my mate 2 days ago about having a left handed club in the bag for the same reasons, although me left shot off the toe has surprised me with some good rescues lately 👍🏼
When you made the comment about sticking with one putter, in my case I am finding myself this year thinking of going with two different putters. My reasoning is that I’m a right handed golfer but now put left handed. I have found that with the medium to closer range puts I am more accurate left handed. But when it comes to long range lag putts I tend to do better right handed. So in my situation it might be beneficial to carry two putters.
I really feel that if golf courses were shortened by 720 yards and our bags were limited to 10 clubs, the game would be more accessible, more fun and would move more quickly.
I generally have 14 clubs in my bag, with a max of 16. I don't play tournaments, my friends don't care (and often have more), and I only have the extra when I'm on the course and might want to test a club.
Assuming you are playing par 3-4-5, I'd go 2 drivers, 1 mid wood or hybrid, 2 midrange irons, 3 wedges, 6 putters. Or if there is a lot of sand around, 5 putters and a sandie.
Titleist 620MB 😍 I think I’ve watched every video since subscribing and enjoyed everyone of them! I can definitely say how much more I’ve enjoyed golf watching these videos, making progress every time! Cheers mate!
Hi Rick. This video is so interesting I couldn't wait to comment. The logic behind the 30+ clubs is "sound" with gapping theoretically not being an issue. How about a follow up to this video with 1 shot of each club on the course to check if there's really a 6 yard spread. I know there are still variables, but I think it would be really interesting. Mark each ball with a number from 7° driver to 65° chipper.
I love the idea with the irons, but I would have changed your woods slightly: 3 drivers (one set to draw bias, one to fade, one to neutral), then pack in a 2w (strong 3w) 3w, 4w & 5w. Not sure I would need them but why not!
One of my biggest improvements was going carry to trolly. The second you picked up the bag shoulder fatigue was the immediate thought. Glad you grabbed a trolly.
I love this video because of how vulnerable you allow yourself to be on camera, Rick. Using the chipper, not editing out your bad shots, and your overall attitude.
Fun notion Rick! I think the advantage of all the lofts for me would be defeated by the option anxiety of all the choices. Looks like the chipper is a more serious club than I thought. Thanks!
So, watching this back 9 months later, get to 15:29 of the video and notice your daughter's name! I have a small person named Ivy, too. And she vastly prefers your channel because, and I quote, "he has a beard like my daaaaaaaad!" Thought that might bring a smile to your face. Be well, Rick!
Rick if your ever in Arizona you should see how you fair on the greens at Silver Creek in Show Low. Fast and rolling. Fun and challenging. Thanks for all your help with my game.
Seeing the G410 crossover 3 iron. I figured I would share. The G410 Crossover 2 iron is an absolute rocket. I have replaced my 3 wood since. 265 off the tee with control and easy stingers are fantastic. Would recommend it to anyone. I haven’t seen many reviews on it.
I am no Rick Siels, but I was trying to by a training aid as a present for my brother 2 Christmases ago and got that Square Strike sent to me by mistake. They said keep it and it has been in my bag ever since. Absolutely love it. I would pay for it if I did not get it for free.

7:24 was just great. Beautiful yet also hilarious.
I’ve never played with 14, can’t imagine playing with 30+
Absolutely loved the chipper. With some practice, that could be a great club near the green.
Rick: has 8 wedges
Me: has 13 clubs because he can’t afford a 60 degree
When you made the comment about sticking with one putter, in my case I am finding myself this year thinking of going with two different putters. My reasoning is that I’m a right handed golfer but now put left handed. I have found that with the medium to closer range puts I am more accurate left handed. But when it comes to long range lag putts I tend to do better right handed. So in my situation it might be beneficial to carry two putters.
Tell me I wasn't hearing things with the background song saying "that's what she said"
Ricky the bigman does it again love watching through the older videos brother keep smashing them birdies
I really feel that if golf courses were shortened by 720 yards and our bags were limited to 10 clubs, the game would be more accessible, more fun and would move more quickly.
Justin Loomis but jack would hate that!
I generally have 14 clubs in my bag, with a max of 16. I don't play tournaments, my friends don't care (and often have more), and I only have the extra when I'm on the course and might want to test a club.
When you gonna play with GM Golf?
Lewisburns94 maybe when they in the same country, they were gonna play in Florida for the golf show but sadly Rick was unable to attend
Micah can hang with Rick if he is playing well.
I’ve always wanted the rules to change so you can have 16, but I do fine with 14, except when I’m testing clubs. Great video.
I would love to see you and Pete or James Robinson do a challenge. 14 clubs, 3 holes, once you use a club, you lose that club.
Assuming you are playing par 3-4-5, I'd go 2 drivers, 1 mid wood or hybrid, 2 midrange irons, 3 wedges, 6 putters. Or if there is a lot of sand around, 5 putters and a sandie.
I knew that’s what the bag was from! I remember the video you put out and I was so pumped for you
The real question is, can you out-drive Guy with 30+ clubs?!
😂
Love your videos you helped my game
Next vid “playing a round of golf in the nude”
Ahh, big No on that one ...
hahaha
Thanks for making these videos Rick! I'm m positive and confident that I can lower my score next time i hit the course!
And she vastly prefers your channel because, and I quote, "he has a beard like my daaaaaaaad!"
Thought that might bring a smile to your face. Be well, Rick!
Love that you contemplated carrying that around at the beginning! Looked like it weighed an absolute tonne :)
Amazing video, I love your videos!!
That's a perfect challenge between you and Peter Finch! Match play of only left handed clubs!!
Your videos are always awesome can’t wait to watch this one
Rick if your ever in Arizona you should see how you fair on the greens at Silver Creek in Show Low. Fast and rolling. Fun and challenging. Thanks for all your help with my game.
The editing with the music when you hit that 8 iron on the 9th hole was money!
Did Rick ever do a review on his watch that does distance n the yards. I’m rlly interested in that device.
