  • I wanted to see if I could make a pair of scrolling plyers out of mild steel and I'm happy to say that I have been using them recently and they have held up just as well as my tool steel pair.
Let me know if you want to see more tong making videos as I want to make a load more new pairs to replace and expand my collection.

Nice Video!! I make ALL of my tongs out of mild steel. Mild steel IS easier to forge and easier to purchase as a source of material. I don't have any high carbon steel tongs. I was taught that the tongs are simply tools to use to make the piece that earns your money. Fuss LESS with the tongs and MORE on the customers piece. I have seen some smith's that get upset when their tongs get hot from the fire and workpiece. To me, THAT'S what they were made for. As a blacksmith, I can make another set of tongs as I need to but I NEED to focus on making the customers piece to earn a living.

Awesome work Oscar. Perfect timing as I’ve tried to make some scrolling tongs and made a dogs breakfast of it. Good to know you used 20x10 as I tried to make the boss from moving stock instead of just picking a good wide stock piece from the start.
Glad to see you hit 1K, the next 9K will fly bye as you have a great channel.

8:30 in, reins thicker than the boss:🤔 Murphy's law says those reins will never touch metal to metal without the skin of your hand being painfully between them 😛🤔

In fact many pliers handles widen out again for a more comfortable grip. And the ones with a milled pivot are full width either side of the hinge.
