    Oh, Dan. Simple for you. I can follow your hammer technique and understand it, but it will take a good few years of practise before I can even do that, never mind confidently say it is simple! Thank you for the instruction, I may come back to it as reference material when I am much more skillful than I am now! This is artistry rather than simple blacksmithing. I have a very competent teacher as I learn the craft, but I'm not sure even he could teach me the way to learn this. (not that I doubt his mastery, just that I fell something this complicated is beyond me no matter who instructs me)

      @@danielmoss2089 Thanks for the encouragement Dan, up until now my smithing projects have gone very well, but my latest one ( A Dragon head poker ) has taught me i'm not nearly as good as I thought. It isn't a knock back, I'm quite happy to spend the time needed to learn the craft, it's obviously time well spent! With practice, some day I might get close to your standard, I certainly hope so!

When they're low you can do what you were doing put the work between your legs without much damage to yourself.😳🙄😂. As well as other aspects of that height. Each Smith has their own methods and preferences as far as anvil set upetc.

    Hey, that is a very nice anvil you have in really good shape. Have a 220 pound Holthaus looks very similar, Except it is slightly more crudely forged., From the factory. What an excellent anvil. Yours looks like all edges are nice and square. I find that if the outer edge or at least one edge is slightly rounded it is nicefor a slight fuller action without cutting into the metal. Also is there a way I could send a photo or two of Anvils from time to time? If so, That would be great would love to share that. Of course you do just fine with what you have you also have a nice power hammer. Stay well. Jim

    How come you didn't spread the handles (reins?) a bit? It would make it easier to get a tighter grip on wider flat stock

    • @danielmoss2089
      @danielmoss2089  4 года назад

      Its would be hard if the reins where spread a part. You want the reins as close together when holding the smallest stock size the tongs are designed to hold so that you can hold larger stock more easily. The wider your grip the harder it is to hold the steel and you then lose mobility if you need to rotate the work. Tongs like these can basically only hold about a range of 6mm which can be a big deal when at the handle end. so if you make them to hold 40x5mm steel you want the reins to be apart just enough to apply pressure and be comfortable to hold. the max you could then hold would be 46x5.
      great question hope that helps

  • @rodneylangton2271
    @rodneylangton2271 4 года назад +1

    Hi Dan thanks for the informative videos, I would appreciate if you could put a chalk mark on one face of reins, so that one can identify which sides are being shaped in boss and nib areas
    Thanks

    • @danielmoss2089
      @danielmoss2089  4 года назад

      Forgive my stupidity but you would like me to mark a part of the Tongs to show which side is being forged?
      Is that what your asking. If so I'm sure I can do something like that. I'm trying very hard to make these videos easy to follow and if something like that would help I can do.

    • @rodneylangton2271
      @rodneylangton2271 4 года назад +1

      Dan the videos are great, sometimes with the heat colours and the angle it's on the anvil gets confusing, with the chalk mark on one face will help, will know which side its been turned.
      Cheers

    Problem with box jaw is that when you have an actual knife, they don’t work real well. Those tongs are about the only style that holds a “knife” well.. thought they are pretty useless for anything else.

  • @killerkane1957
    @killerkane1957 4 года назад +2

    Wait Dan! This style should be used properly. Grasp the blade or flat stock then hit the tongs reign ends straight down on the anvil wedging the flat stock tightly between the long nib. This actually makes them superior to box tongs. Now show us the power hammer version! I AM almost 70!

    • @danielmoss2089
      @danielmoss2089  4 года назад

      Doesn't stop them being and tong clips work great. Also box Jaws can hold a couple of size of the width of the stock. How ever they do there job and I did forget the lock thing. Sorry thanks for the comment.

    • @killerkane1957
      @killerkane1957 4 года назад +1

      Dan, I should have been fair and stated: “In my humble opinion”. Clearly box jaws have great uses. It boils down to the wiggle or fishtailing of stock between the two versions. Can we ever have enough tongs?? Oh hell no. Thanks!!

    Daniel, @23:00-24:00 would standing the "blade stock" up next to the anvil and driving the tongs onto the stock work? I don't think I would try it at a very high heat though, everything else would bend. Just a rookie asking questions:
    ruclips.net/video/sZWTArao7lI/видео.html

    • @danielmoss2089
      @danielmoss2089  4 года назад

      That just tends to put pressure on the rivet and causes issues with the hinges/bosses. If I could ensure the rivet, boss and rivet hole would stay in line it would be a great idea.
