Very informative. The small mistakes are teachable moments and they are expected when forging. You have not failed in your attempt at teaching. Well done my friend.
Hi mate. Great video. I love the way you explain where the hammer blows are ie, half on half off the anvil. Not many people bother to explain exactly where they are striking the steel. Thank you.
I have built a small homemade forge and have been watching many forging video's. Up till now, an 50+ gentleman has been my favorite. I have heard the term, half face blows and quarter face blows,,,, I never could figure out what that meant! At 2;30 in your demonstration I now know!!! I am now subscribed! Awesome work there young fellar!! So nice to see young people into one of the most Ancient Arts!!
Very cool man, I started my set before I watched the entire vid...... made 2 out of 10” of 3/4” round. So I’ll be welding the reins on. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great Video Dan. Love the way you talked us through the process at the anvil, then went to the power hammer to finish the rest up with this one. Keep up the good work mate Cheers 👍⚒
Nice and strong looking tongs attention to detail well worth it.your presentation gives me the confidence to give them a go .and I have the video to come back to if necessary .
I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video I literally followed your instructions step by step. And thanks to you I made some of the best tongs in my arsenal godbless you Daniel moss and thank you for sharing your wisdom with us all. With very slight modifications these are brutal for knife maker's.
I’m forging a set of these using these techniques and it is so easy! I have never made tongs because they’re such a pain but thanks to this video my confidence has had a huge boost!
I love those tongs. The only thing from my personal preference is I don't like the round part of the jaws before the bit, this is more unfavorable using a gas forge I find when they are too large in diameter they are a bit awkward to use when taking the stock out of the forge. I haven't built a coal forge yet so this is probably not an issue in an open area. Cheers
Really enjoy this but I find it really difficult to shape the steel, I’m not a blacksmith at all but love trying things at home but I will keep on trying lol....I have one of those “half sized” anvils (quite expensive for me) and I purchased a small gas operated furnaces so I can only heat the steel in short lengths....if I had my working life over again I would sacrifice finance (a little of it lol) to take a course in blacksmithing...thank you for the upload, it’s great !
With the rivit hole in the boss do you drift it to the exact same size as the rivit or do you go slightly bigger and how do you prevent the side wobble in the boss area
For me the bolt jaw is the best looking tong in smithing. Next time a try to make a Habermann style or with the ferrier aprouch? I have send you an email dan. Cheers.
When you put the ruler to make the straight line the piece looks 1.5 inches is it only 16mm or 5/8 or are the bottom numbers not inches? could i make half inch square bar work or 12.7 mm
First ! Ok now that I have watched the video lol , as the ,material is from fork tines will the constant heat and cool cycle during use weaken them ? The manner you make them I have seen though the fitment process you showed a bit better then most, IE the wood spacer. I am curious though some leave the reins strait, small kick up, or ball ended. I personally like the ball ended . Would you upset the end of the reign in the vice then work it to octagon and then to round with a hammer or would you use a forming block / swage block ?
if the hinge plate of my tongs are seized up and I'm really lazy, I like smear some abrasive paste with water in there to allow it to wear in easier and then wash it out a before drying
Amigo, tienes un me gusta mas. Así es, me gustó tu trabajo, no obstante pienso que tu taller no se ve suficiente bien ordenado; entiendo que un taller de herrería no debe ser un quirófano, pero tampoco un establo.
I wish I had time to tide up! I don't like it much either but its all i can afford and its what pays the bill. If you don't like it don't watch. thank you for the comment. Please understand I've builst my business form nothing and work plus 60hours a week.
The horn needs to be toward your right side. u working with right hand. nobody works on horn from behind as u did in video. it is riht side anwill. blacksmith hammers on length of anwil not akros from side. akros u hold the material. your hammer works paralel to anwil. hamer stays on anwil wen u heet metal. the tong are not bad, but far away from good.

Great video! I liked the part where you sharpened the tongs on a brick!
Your silly, bricks are silly.
Right smart work Sir! Taking notes, for 'micro Tongs' . 😉⚒️❤️
16 mm is 5/8", because i'm from Sweden! ;-)
He mean 5/8..... I know it....bwahahahahhhhaha🇨🇦
Very well made informative video.Always enjoyable to watch your stuff. Will definitely be helpfull to improve my tongmaking efforts...
Great tutorial with awesome detail! Thanks for sharing and God Bless you sir!

I’m talking back as you tell me Dan, I’m paying attention mate
Hey Dan! looks like they are mine :D :D thank you!
I think they are!
Nice bolt jaw tongs! We posted your video on our homemade tools forum yesterday :)
In all seriousness, though, yet another stunning set of tongs. Would love to own a set one day. Your tong game is on point.
I'll make some with ya when we come to stay xx

Hi dan does it make a difference if you use a more rounded edge of the anvil or a sharp edge of the anvil while making a set down
With the rivit hole in the boss do you drift it to the exact same size as the rivit or do you go slightly bigger and how do you prevent the side wobble in the boss area

last question can you start with the reins?
You can it mess up the proportion for the hinges and nibbs but you definitely can.
@@danielmoss2089 Thanks Good to know

Motto for 2k20! “If I don’t hit it, it won’t forge.”
Let's do this x
Definitely feeling that as 2020 blacksmithing student 😂👌
Hi Dan is it 30mm than 70mm from the 30mm mark or 70mm from the end of the bar
Hi Dan what's the distance between the first to set downs that you do after forging
When you put the ruler to make the straight line the piece looks 1.5 inches is it only 16mm or 5/8 or are the bottom numbers not inches? could i make half inch square bar work or 12.7 mm
👍👍👍👍👍
i really learned a whole lot!! what do you think about a series forging on stones?
👍👍👍
May I ask. How hot does your forge get? Can I do this with an air over propane unit?
They turned out good Dan, you didn't show the offsetting of the reigns I think you offset them ???
I did and the video was like 35mins long and it's been filmed better in other videos. Sorry.
@@danielmoss2089 That's ok I have seen it other video's and I use the same method, Just makes the tongs a bit more usable.
How long did you make the curved part.
I bought a bending dog or fork depending how you say it. I am hoping that makes bending easy
Hey Daniel, would 5/8" round bar work instead of square bar? Thanks Nick

When I think of blacksmithing I think of England...Henry VIII's armour workshop

16mm is about 5/8 inch. If you use 5/16, you're gonna be making tweezers.
5/16, 5/8, same thing.
Clamp of the month sounds great Daniel........ but please don't do a hook of the week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have them on Etsy?, I just recently got on Etsy website
I sure do.
Great job, you Inspire me to make some thongs. Last month I made a bick and all this stuff is hard to do .
are there any actual blacksmiths in the comments, or just people talking about blacksmithing?
Odd question and yes a couple of the people in the comments are blacksmith. Why? Do you need to be put I touch with a Smith near you?
5/8=16mm approx not 5/16 😅
