Pickup Tong Tutorial - No Power Hammer Used!

- I've gotten some guff in the past about making beginner tong tutorials and then proceeding to use a power hammer. My shop is currently under construction and out of power so I thought now would be the perfect time to make another tong tutorial completely by hand. Follow along as I make a set of small pickup tongs completely from scratch and draw them out entirely on my anvil. Can it be done? Can I do it? Yes I can. Do I miss my power hammer? Yes I do!
These small but mighty pickup tongs are great for holding onto small hammers on end or even square stock. Ironically, I may have made these by hand but they are one of my favorite tongs to use while working at the power hammer.

I just love the Blacksmith Baby! Those tongs are perfect for catching farm babies! I am just starting, so forgive my humor, but you explain what you are doing like a professor. Much appreciated! Your baby is beautiful!! I am going out to my shop to sculpt something! Thank you!
Thanks! If you are interested in tongs I have a whole playlist on forging different types. We're pretty proud of our little blacksmith baby. Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed the demonstration but, honestly, you got the like the moment your apprentice got featured.
I might have to feature him more often - if only I could figure out how to get him to keep his ear muffs on 🙂 Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I know who the real boss is lol😂.
He's really cute. Keep up the good work and God bless.
Yes, he definitely has me wrapped around his little finger! Thanks for watching & God bless you too!
Looks like your little man enjoyed him self mate . Cheers from Australia . 🥰👍⚒🤠
Thanks! He is going to be quite the little shop buddy. Thanks for coming around the world to hang out with me 🙂
Good video, great step by step instructions! I appreciate the incidental hints as you worked. Looks like your lil guy is getting ready for his first lesson..lol
Thank you. He loves to be in the shop with me and quite enjoys banging on things much to his mother's chagrin 😊
Some of the best instructional dialog and video on YT. Good job friend
Wow, thank you very much!
Great how-to tutorial Jake.
I'm just a beginner and vids like this really help.
You earned my sub also.
Thanks! I'm glad it helped you out!
They turned out great!
Thank you! I checked out your channel, you look like a handy guy to know!
awesome you even worked your apprentice til he needs a nap.. thank you for sharing!
Yes very true.. although in reality I think I was actually the one ready for a nap after drawing out those reins by hand! 😂 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your skills J!
Thank you for watching!
Nap time rocks
Nice work on the tongs
Thanks, and kids never appreciate naps like grown ups do!
Thanks for sharing, they keep out great!
Thanks, thanks for stopping by!
Great job
Thank you! Thanks for watching.
I have been playing at this for 3 years, very good explanation. I have seen a lot of videos on making tongs. I picked a few good points that I have missed before. Thank You, I have subscribed and be watching your other videos.
I'm really happy you were able to pick out a few good nuggets - that is always my goal with my videos. Feedback is always very helpful so if there is every anything you are struggling with I'd love to hear about it so I could try to address it in one of my videos to help you and others. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy the other videos as well.
Great video and instruction sir!👍
Thank you!
Great video!
I'm glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Thank you.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Very Helpful! I learned a few things. Thanks also for using the big hammer for our benefit.
I'm glad it was helpful, that was my goal. Thanks for watching!
Well done video Jayce! Pickup tongs are on my list of tools to make as soon as the weather cools off enough to fire the forge up. That sure is a good looking apprentice you have helping you. I like that "playpen" too! 😉😊
Thank you Bob! They are handy tongs to have around so I hope you can get into your shop soon. And yes, it is a very classy playpen... we used a round bale feeder for our twins that worked well also if you're in the market for ideas 😂😉
Great video! My pick up tongs look way different, so I'm definitely going to forge some like that.. Thanks again for sharing
That is what is so neat about forging - there are many different ways to do something and you can customize for whatever you need. Thanks for stopping by!
Good video You are very good at explaining the steps in the making process. I am really enjoying your videos thanks. Also looks like you had a top hand helping in this one.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it and yes he loves to help! He was out in the shop with me today working on the skidsteer and decided to taste test the sockets 😂
Very nice! I like these, gonna make some next timei don't have anything major coming up. Right now I'm using a pair of the "hammer" pick up tongs. The ones that are almost triangle shaped. They work pretty well. But yeah. Recently I just made a some slot Jaws. I was using "blade" tongs, but I got tires of only haveing them, and regular flat bills. Take care!
Ya they are handy to have around - I have a saying, you can never have too many tongs! I have a whole playlist on different tongs if you're hankering to make more! I love to make tongs but it has been so hot here I've haven't got to do as many as I like. Thanks for stopping by!
@@FarmsteadForge will check it out! I'm on the third year of my smithing venture and I'm going strong! See you next vid, and yeah watch the heat!
Who repaired the edges of your anvil and what techniques did they use if you know? If the repair is strong, can use the edge as a more aggressive fuller than the horn for drawing out the reigns. And, I think that once all the surface is full of humps and bumps, then going to the flat side of the hammer on the flat face works better than the horn and rounding side of the hammer, switching back and forth between them (two round surfaces, then two flat) works better than a single technique by itself. But, I'm just a rTongs. Only a couple of summers experience, I watched this to learn how to make the Jaws for the tongs.
I had both of my anvils redone at a professional shop. I didn't put as much money into this one as my main shop anvil so the edges on this anvil are definitely softer. I'm not sure what techniques they used. I just demonstrated the one technique in this video to try to keep it simple and straightforward for someone just learning. There are definitely a lot of different methods for drawing out and for the jaws, I hope you were able to take something away from this video! At the end of the day there are so many different ways to do everything you've got to just pick what works best for you - that's what I do. Thanks for watching!
Great job Jayce!! I really am in envy for you having an "Apprentice"!!!,,,LOL. I think I may try and make a pair or 12 as it's definitely a different twist on picker uppers that I have. Usually use the wolf jaws mainly. Thanx~
Thanks Chuck! If you are envious of this little guy, wait until my next video where my twin daughters do some forging, it's pretty fun to be able to teach them something I enjoy. These are definitely a handy little tong, I like to use them at the power hammer.
Great job on those very handy tongs. I was wondering how long it took in real time to make the tongs, 2.5 hrs not to bad. Could you make mention of how you decide the positioning of the rivet in the Boss? I enjoy the great explanation of your process. Thank you for sharing Jayce. The little guy is almost ready for a hammer.
Thanks Randy, he'll be a good hammer operator. The position of the rivet is a great suggestion, thank you - I will cover that in my next tong video. That's why I had to rasp more on the one side, I got my hole a little off so it put too much material on the inside. Thanks for watching and your always constructive feedback!
Nice, @FarmsteadForge 👍👍👍👍👍
Just wondering about how long does it take you to forge a pair of tongs by hand? It takes me a while still have yet to time myself thanks for sharing godbless and good health. I guess I should have finished the video first you said two and a half hours thanks again😅.
If I'm using a power hammer I can usually whip a set out in about an hour. Thanks for watching!
Have you made a hammer for the young one yet? My grandson is a little over three weeks old and I'm already planning one for him.😛😁
That's awesome, you are on it with the planning! Congrats on the little guy! I haven't made one for mine yet, that is definitely a winter project, but I better get on it soon 🙂
Why does everyone think a power hammer is needed now days? I'm an old fart and don't have a power hammer, it just takes a while but there is always other things to do more efficiently when you hammer by hand.
Definitely not necessary, but I do like to use one in my day to day work because it saves the shoulders and makes things go faster.
Just found your channel.subscribed imeadeatly. Did you do the work on your anvil?mine needs the same attention. An old Peter Wright that I'm afraid of messing up.
