wow! This instrument is so special. You are so talented to adapt yourself to such a variety of brass. Great playing, as always! Thanks for your videos, Dan!

This was a fun instrument to learn how to play. Although it took awhile. Thanks.

Well done! How does this model compare to the 10 keyed bugle? Are the ranges different (supposing they'd be in he same key)? Are there accidentals that are unaccessible on the 6 keyed model?

The 10 key bugle is in the key of Eb and the 6 keyed bugle is in the key of C. They both have the same range within their keys and they both can play the same chromatic notes. The extra keys on the 10 keyed bugle allows you to play more notes in tune giving you alternate choices with the extra keys as well as being able to play trills with the extra keys. But the extra keys are not really used very often. Thank you very much for your interest and thank you for watching.

@@brassfromthepast5149 Thank you very much! I'd like to finally ask if you don't mind but what is the playing range for one of these bugles? 2 octaves? 3 octaves? Whatever its range is, is it comparable to the accepted range of the modern valved trumpet (same lowest note, or keyed bugle can't go as low, etc...)? Thanks again.

The Keyed bugle was very popular back in the early 1800s. But it did not last long once the piston valve was invented around that same time. The Keyed trumpet was invented somewhat earlier. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!

I love the video. Would it affect the value of a horn to fix the small dents in the bell?

That depends on who you ask. There are those who believe that nothing should be changed on a historic instrument except to make it playable or not at all. And there are those like myself who believe that the instrument should be restored to its former glory. And that is what I do. I really enjoy bringing them back to life to experience what they sounded like many years ago.

Just wondering what mad man decided to put keys on a trumpet.

This is actually a keyed Bugle. But a keyed Trumpet was invented sometime before the keyed bugle was invented. However, the keyed Trumpet was the first chromatic trumpet to be invented. Before its invention the natural Trumpet could only play notes within its harmonic series. The natural Trumpet had no valves or keys. And it was very limited. So the invention of the Keyed Trumpet was quite a spectacular invention. The piston valve and the rotary valve had not been invented yet at this time. Thanks for watching!

    Similar to Haydn trumpet concert?

The Haydn trumpet concerto was performed on a Keyed Trumpet. It is similar to this kind of instrument. But not with as many keys. If you check out my other videos you will find one that has a keyed trumpet with me playing the Haydn concerto. Thanks for watching.

Can it be played in the key of Bb?

No, unfortunately not. I can pull the mouthpiece tuning bit out more but it only allows it to go to the key of B. Thanks for watching!

Some of these very old instruments don’t sound too great. But it is very interesting to hear them. Thank you very much for watching.
