I feel like they missed the mark by not making the AoW function in the same way Stance does for other straight swords, like SoNaF? The heavy attack from stance triggers the corkscrew while a light could maybe trigger a telekinetic swipe which has follow ups? (Akin to the Ring Knight Straight Sword from DS3?)
As a whole Stance & Unsheathe offer a big avenue for creativity in AoW’s which only got utilised in 2 cases: SoNaF/Moonveil, hoping the dlc gives us more unique stance AoW’s… hell even bringing back the ds3 unsheathe with a parry would be crazy good and easy to do
I did some looking into it. If you're not 2 handing the greatsword, the arcane scaling and strength scaling is pretty similar, seeing as arcane gives magic damage as well as physical. If you're 2 handing, then it is a bigger difference. If you're 2 handing, the best choice is to put strength up to 52, and then get arcane up as much as possible with whatever points you have left. Anything past 50 with arcane is a waste tho. However, if you're not 2 handing, any difference is negligible. Whether you have 30 strength and 50 arcane (656 AR,) or 50 strength and 30 arcane (663 AR,) is only going to have a small difference. You will still get slightly more points of damage with strength, but at best it's around 10 points of damage. I would go with more arcane, seeing as it gives you better options in terms of other weapons. However, dont ever go past 50 arcane or 52 strength, if you reach that point in either stat it will be better to put points in the other stat.
In duals, Marais' greatsword is hard to pull off, but in invasions it's actually a beast ! Hosts acccompanied with phantoms are way more reckless and bloodthirsty than 1v1ers, and most of the time you can land a (not charged) WA on someone and get a one shot or at else 75% (following up with one handed roll catches, it's chef's kiss)
Tbh I haven’t done a full new character play through in so long since I really just like trying endgame builds more then playing a through an entire game, so ima try Maria’s now,
All I want is for the ash of war to work like night and flame stance. Hold down L2 then use R1 for the corkscrew/slash and R2 for the spinning attacks. Such a missed opportunity.
If it was even halfway to the bombastic moveset that Elemer/Bearing hunter is capable of it would be miles better than it is currently. Seriously aggravating the way From gives you dumbed down movesets of the same weapons your enemies use. Yeah, I get that it'd be OP the way some of the enemy movesets play out with amount of poise DMG and range/speed of melee and width of AoE etc..... But , man some serious buyers remorse after your shabby looking moveset and damage features don't come close to the enemy who dropped it.😐 Wish it wasn't so pronounced.
Going through all the trouble to beat Malenia just to find your version of Waterfowl Dance kind of sucks ass due to how the game works is proof that FROM doesn't know what it's doing sometimes.

Due to these weapons having different scaling with Arcane, and thus requiring different stat allocations to maximize damage, I just feel that these two weapons just aren't comparable. If you're going for a Arcane focused build then Regalia will be better than the greatsword because of the higher Arcane scaling. If you want a more Strength heavy build then greatsword would be the better option. This just feels like the RUclipsr took two very different weapons, gave them the same ash of war, and said yeah "lets compare these as if they are identical weapons" when they arent. Same ash of war does not equal comparable weapons. Ofcourse Regalia wont do identical damage to the greatsword when they both have different scaling, your choice in which to use should depend on how deep into Arcane your build goes, if it doesnt go too deep but focuses more on strength than go Marais, if it goes deep into Arcane then Regalia
So uhm what if I paired the regalia sword with the sword of st Trina? Like hypothetically I’d put them to sleep and then I get a free AoW off on my opponent right?
I personally have been using the regalia in a sword and sheild combo with the coiled shield, using the AoW of the sheild will proc poison within 2 hits if not 1 Also a good combo is to cold infuse a straight sword and power stance with that, the proc on frostbite does a chunk of damage ( like bleed ) and it lowers their damage absorption by 20%, making the regalia hit like a truck, basically you can pair a lot more with the regalia and do some crazy powerful builds
They both have their uses. I do like the dial straight swords but you can pair the executioners sword with a pair of the same great shields to use the shield bash and one to trigger the ash.
I looked it up and Eochaid is n gaelic word and apparently it's pronounced more like Eoc - Haid, with the first part, Eoc meaning horse. Haid is land or possibly man
I wholeheartedly disagree with the Marais not being good for pvp. If your poise is high enough you can eat the attack and it won't interrupt you and then your attack will literally one shot most players. The ashe of war animation when it hits the enemy player will literally hold them in place to receive up to 90% of the damage before they can roll out of it. Also if your ashe of war is already in mid animation and they accidently touch it it stops them and still hits them hard depending on how far into the attack you are. The sword swing after the drill animation can be redirected too to catch enemies approaching from another angle if you missed the initial drill attack animation. Man I can't give this weapon enough praise for pvp personally.
Late reply but yeah I can believe this cos I had the same experience with dragon kings cragblade which is somewhat similar in the sense of you just need decent poise to start up in someone’s face but once you do their toast
On my arcane, faith build with minimum strength and dex requirements the Regalia AoW hit harder making it the better option for a low strength build due to its lower weight and requirements. The range is a tad lower though.
I pair Regalia with a Bleed Broadsword (AoW:Seppukku). I get WAY more damage and more uptime on buffs (White Mask, Lord of Blood's Exultation) doing this. Edit: Plus it's fast than dual greatswords🤷🏽♂️
My regalia is stronger , i dont have 60 strength, i have high arcane and dex. I guess if you have a high strength build running marais would be preferred, for my build, dual regalias are better. But morgots curved sword is way under-rated. High arcane 80, and dex 65 i absolutely decimate with it. But as you stated its hard not using bleed weapons with arcane.
Regalia of Eochaid should get the telekinetic arc slash of the Bell Bearing Hunter that has 3 follow-ups that all cost 12 FP to do. 🗡

Add thorny cracked tear and spiked cracked tear physick potion to Marias and you get insane damage.
Those don’t work with charged ashes of war. You want Godfrey Icon and Shard of Alexander instead.

Regalia scales better with arcane, you should stop increasing dex after you got 20. This sword works great on a dragon communion build.
