I came into your store last Thursday 4/4/24 (I'm the guy with the walker), I can't remember his name, but I spoke to the tall older guy and he was a great help! I'm 4th generation from Clearwater and I have many high end rod's and reels, as I fish both saltwater and freshwater. On this day I was looking for a two piece rod that I could leave in the front of my Ranger all the time, so I could grab it and jump out at any time I see a lake or pond that I want to try, yet not have to worry about it being stolen if I'm in a store somewhere. I was told that you didn't have any two piece rods, but I ended up buying a Bull Bay 3 pc. travel rod which was perfect for what I needed! He then showed me a Shimano Nasci 1500 and the Diawa Exceler 2500D-XH, I played with both and it took me less than a minute to choose the Exceler. Would I have chose it if I needed it for saltwater? Definitely not, but I used the Exceler and the Bull Bay Travel Rod a lot over the weekend and both performed even better than I expected! Thanks Tailwater Outfitters for your first class service!

I have 3 Nascis. They’re great durable reels. Drag is smooth. Certainly isn’t a stradic by any stretch. But for 100 dollars. They make great general use combo reels. I have 2 paired with shimano clarus rods and they’re awesome. We bass fish during the spring summer fall and winter and also do some walleye fishing in the cooler months. They have stood up to everything. They’re still buttery smooth. I haven’t used the exceler. But I chose the shimano over the exceler just based on my prior experience with my other shimano reels.

That’s a solid assessment and your feel for the Shimano NASCI is spot on. It’s in Shimano’s CoreSolid lineup which is more for power than the finesse line known as MagnumLite.
CoreSolid = takes more to start the revolution but it rotates longer
MagnumLite = less effort to start and stop the reel (smoother)

I have not found anything yet that beats a daiwa BG for quality and value at that price point. Smooth and powerful if not a little heavy but will not flex under heavy load. Still an easy real to maintain yourself. I have the 3000 and 3500. The 3500 is as beast. I also own a Shimano stradic 4000. Sixty bucks more than the daiwa but a work of art . The downside is if you do your own maintainence this real will be very intricate with a lot of small parts. Just a note if you fish in salt check the line roller bearing . Mine had corrosion starting after half a season. My last reel is my most expensive and wish I didn't buy it. A penn clash 2 in 3000 size. It's one of those reels that felt real smooth in the store but didn't come close to the daiwa and Shimano jigging all day. . i use this real for throwing out bait and putting the pole in a sand spike.

I’m not the biggest fan of the anti-reverse switch for saltwater fishing. I fish a little bit from the beach and flats-the chances of sand or ocean spray getting in the reel increases and I don’t like that additional entry area. My Okuma reel topped over onto sand for a brief moment but the moment I picked it up and reeled, it had already entered the gears. I’ve done that by accident with my Nasci and Penn stuff and haven’t had that issue

What you said about the mid range reel being a better value than the top shelf models? Yeah. Kinda. Like if you buy a jdm shimano stradic it'll run you around 160 dollars. No warranty. Spend 15 dollars and you can buy a couple parts and replace the stock parts in the stradic and once reassembled you've upgraded it (for all intents and purposes) to a stella internally.
It's like a stock zebco 33, buy a single pack of bearings, swap out the stock bushings for tge bearings and internally it's a zebco platinum. The only difference is the platinum has an all aluminum frame while the zebco 33 is graphite which makes it much lighter. We call it super tuning. I do it to every zebco 33 i give to a kid.
I'm all about supertuning reels. It's fun and brings performance to a much higher level than was designed.
I just wish they made reels easier to maintain just so that supertuning is easier. Also, that would pretty much render their warranties useless because it'd be so much easier to fix a reel yourself. I think lew's is excellent in that area.

If You're a weirdo like me who likes to use 20 or 30 lb fluoro to braid line go with diawa. Shimano always makes a narrow choke point between the line roller and the bale. Makes it so you're connecting not gets caught. But if you know that with that real you're always going to you 15 and below line I would say Shimano is a little better. I just like having the option.

Why on earth would the anti-reverse switch be a turn off for you? Do you view it as somehow being a feature that attracts only newbie, amateur anglers and you’re too tough, cool, manly, and experienced for such nonsense? Pro Angler Randy Blaukat will only use a spinning reel that has an anti-reverse switch on it.
I put that anti-reverse switch to use at least a dozen or two times every time I go fishing. It makes a lot more sense than having to loosen up the drag, pull line out by hand and then tighten the drag back up every time I want to change the length of line hanging from my rod for casting or tying on another lure.

I was told yesterday by a fishing store clerk that the Fuego, about $10 more than the Excelor, has better saltwater protection (Magseal). The Excelor to me felt smoother.
He stated that if you’re mostly freshwater fishing, the Excelor is an excellent choice.
      Hope this helps.

The Daiwa is the smart choice because it is the only one with an anti-reverse switch. I won’t buy a real without that feature. I think it’s ridiculous to have to loosen up the drag to pull line out by hand and then re-tighten the drag every time you want to change the length of your line for casting or for tying on a new lure. That pretty obviously has to increase the wear on your drag washers.

You didn't talk about the premium cold forged aluminum main gear (same as the Stella) that you get in the Nasci. The Fierce uses a cheap zinc alloy as far as i'm concerned and knowing Daiwa they probably also went down the zinc route for the Exceler. For that reason alone Nasci for the win, no brainer

    • @tailwateroutfitters
      @tailwateroutfitters  Год назад +1

While the cold forged hagane gear in both reels is correct, the main gear in two reels is definitely not the same gear. The Stella has the micro module gear ii, which is an increased number of smaller gear teeth. This results in the gears meshing together smoother.

Rods i only use Fenwick glass St croix, Lamiglas and some loomis, but only stuff made in USA or Japan . I have No boat and i only throw swim and glide baits too. I'm usually on the rocks under a raging Dam on a river in Tennessee on the pouring rain (I live for that) at 4am. I need reels with 50+ lbs of drag like Daiwa Dogfights etc to drag huge Stripers out of the current thru boulders and timber. I could never own a reel called piscifun or cast king or any of these new cheap Chinese stuff. Just not for me. Maybe ok for some people. Different stroke. I guess for people who are weekend warriors or for taking the kids out on Sat fishing 2x a year Wal mart tackle is ok....
